I THINK CROWLEY WAS A SERAPH?????

yes like the seraphim. like the highest order of heaven. like. the angels who have six wings and eyes all over them.

i understand that i probably need to provide evidence even though this is definitely just a headcanon currently. i'm very interested in mythology as a pagan, and i study demonic and angelic hierarchies in my spare time. so this is something i'm very interested in and i feel like i've cracked the case.

SO a couple things from the new season have been making me think that crowley was a rlly high ranking angel.

like we all knew that it was a little weird how he had the power to literally stop time in the first season. and then in this season, we see him literally manufacture star nurseries and nebulas. he's a lot more powerful than he lets on. as someone else described, he's incredibly powerful and being "just some guy" about it.

anyway we get some hints about what level of angel he's at. in the last episode, muriel tells him that only those ranked thrones or dominions or higher can access certain files in heaven. and crowley can.

now quickly, here are the ranks of the angels.

now, higher orders don't necessarily mean they are more powerful. in the context of good omens alone, gabriel is the supreme archangel and the most powerful. and even though principalities (like aziraphale) are ranked closer to god, they are less powerful than archangels.

so yeah crowley totally could have been an archangel, except they're ranked below thrones and dominions which means he couldn't have accessed the files. it doesn't even seem like saraqael could have accessed them, as she just watched even though she is an archangel. so i think crowley once upon a time was a higher rank than an archangel.

so that leaves four candidates. dominions, thrones, cherubim and seraphim. and thanks to a little line in episode 201, i think i've worked it out.

when beelzebub warns crowley about heaven's extreme sanctions, crowley tells them that (paraphrasing), "extreme sanctions aren't a thing. we just made them up to scare the cherubs."

THE CHERUBS. now, the plural of cherub is cherubim, and a cherub is often depicted as a baby angel, with similar iconography to cupid. so it makes sense that he's describing making up a story to scare the baby angels but it ALSO implies that the cherubim were ranked beneath him.

what's the only order of angels above cherubim? seraphim. va-voom.

and in case i need to further prove my case, do you know what the base word for seraphim is? it's the hebrew saraph, which means "burning" and sometimes is used as a noun to denote... "serpent."

i've never really been into the fan theory that crowley was raphael before the fall. and now i don't think i do, mainly because im convinced he was one of the seraphim and raphael is always described as an archangel.

we might never know crowley's angel name, if it was different to his demon one. but i think the main takeaway is that he was a lot more powerful than first impressions might serve.

high school teacher + demon killer au because ?????????

lots and lots of details below. i kinda went insane

TLDR Artoria is a Slayer figure so shes just really good at killing shit, but that also means demons and etc are just naturally attracted to her. Merlin helped raise her with everything she would need to be a killing machine, and has for several of her reincarnations, but with each one he felt worse and worse she didnt get a normal life even if it was for "the greater good". He still taught her how to defend herself but couldnt bring himself to railroad her into dedicating her entire life to it again so now shes a school Principal and he's head of the English department. He does everything in his power to make sure Artoria doesn't notice demon activity (she does, she notices it very much, but she remembers her past lives and is trusting Merlin to handle it and treating this like a vacation essentially). Merlin is responsible for properly banishing demons from earth when hunters kill them, as destroying their hosts or their demonic forms still gives them a chance to come back years down the line.

He noticed Izou (PE teacher) and Antonio (Music teacher) had affinity for demon slaying and pays them extra to help keep the school safe, because its a supernatural hotzone now from Artoria being there. Theres a lot more staff recruits (you can assume every other staff member in every department is in on it) but im focusing on these two.

Izou is back in his home town after feeling lonely getting pissed off at his mechanic job, and he just takes the PE position bc how hard can it be to teach kids to kick a ball. or run. He lives in Ryouma's extra room and also loved coming back to find out he was married, invited no one to the wedding, and also his wife is a benevolent dragon god demon that is a threat to the local frog population (she eats them but also accepts them as offerings for small boons) but otherwise harmless. Izou is no stranger to killing demons but his understanding of the magic behind it is pretty much zero, he'll just keep cutting until it dies. And if cutting it doesnt kill it, hes in trouble. His favorite student is Okita Jr, a young girl who's a bit outcast because she always talks to her imaginary friend Rengoku. but she actually "listens" to Izou's athletic advice, which makes him incredibly happy. She's the daughter of Okita and Nobu.

Antonio has always struggled with possessions and he foolishly made a deal with one named The Gray Man to get other demons off his back when he was a child. When summoned The Gray Man is in control and possesses his body, which lets him physically fight on level with a demon. This has its advantages, but unfortunately just being contracted to The Gray Man occasionally causes auditory and visual hallucinations. This means he needs someone to reality check him occasionally, which Mozart does regularly as his best friend and coworker. Unfortunately, Antonio's most frequent hallucinations involve killing him. When not using The Gray Man he can still conjure a silver sword thats especially effective against undead and cast minor bindings and offensive magics. He does not have a favorite student, but adores the group of children he teaches choir at the local church.

Asclepius is the school nurse whos crabby and intense and yet weirdly lax. if you show up saying you have a stomach ache he'll question you as if you murdered someone, looking for something strange or unique about the most simple injuries or nausea just in case it's tied to a demon or a possession. As soon as you pass his check he'll let you go home, even if you admit you were lying about feeling sick. Its not his business why you want to leave, just get out of his office. But also he's there for demonology research and is given his extra pay in demon corpses for research. He is also not defenseless, having rigged most of his office with some sort of trap or hidden weapon he can set off in case someone tries to steal research or corpses. A perk of him being eccentric is that no one questions why his office takes up the majority of the school basement. He also lives down there.

She-Ra High School Theatre Kid AU Headcanons

I made this because I am a theatre kid, and me and my sister were talking about Double Trouble being a theatre kid, so this happened. We basically came up with this entire au while we walked our dog.

Also I know none of this stuff would ever happen in real life, but it’s fanfiction, let me have this

Hordak is the head of tech

Castaspella runs costumes

Huntara is the choreographer

Actors:

Catra - Has been in love with theatre since she was a kid, wants to be an actress when she grows up. She’s only ever cast as the villain/antagonist because she’s so good at playing those roles, but she’s not complaining. Shadow Weaver hates her and constantly talks down to her whenever Angella’s not around. Really good singer.

Double Trouble - Also in love with theatre. Brings the drama. Really good at whatever role they receive. Always competes with Sea Hawk for the lead role regardless of gender.

Sea Hawk - Theatre kid is his entire personality and he lives for it. Competes with Double Trouble for the lead role regardless of gender. Loves roles that get to do fight choreography. Has a habit of setting at least one prop, set, or costume on fire every show. No one knows how, and honestly, neither does he.

Glimmer - Director kid vibes, we’ve all met one. You know what I’m talking about. Usually gets a big speaking role, but not the lead. Jealous of Catra bc Glimmer thinks the villains get better songs. Catra agrees and holds it over her head constantly. Has a habit of being an “actor director” sometimes, but never in a mean or condescending way, and most of the time Angella was going to give the same note. Most of the time.

Bow - Actor/Techie. Auditions for a role, but if he doesn’t get one, he’ll do tech. He doesn’t have a preference, he just likes being a part of the process and being with his friends. One of the only basses in the department.

Mermista - Actor/stage manager. Even when she has a role in the current show, Mermista is still the stage manager bc she’s the only one who can deal with and control everyone’s shit(aka Sea Hawk level shenanigans). Actually a really good actor when she puts effort into her roles, but it has to be for a show she actually likes.

Kyle - Usually ensemble, but sometimes he has small speaking roles. Famous for breaking or losing props.

Techies:

Entrapta - Sound/lights. Works with Hordak, they’re close friends. He’s dreading her graduation bc she’s the only who actually understands how to run the systems. She insists she’ll be back tho.

Scorpia - Build crew. Stronk. Nuff said. Started bc she wanted to support Catra, and kept doing it bc she thought the head costumer was cute.

Adora - Also build crew. Again, stronk. Paints occasionally because that was her first choice, but they lack muscle strength in build. Can only get away with painting if Lonnie is there that day. Joined to watch Catra and Catra only. Has only listed to the songs that Catra sings in her role. Has never listened to a full Broadway album. Glimmer is disappointed.

Lonnie - Build crew. Not that interested but comes to support her friends when she doesn’t have lacrosse practice. Never runs a show, but watches every night.

Rogelio - Paint crew. Adora lost an arm wrestling contest to him, and he got first choice. She’s forever salty for it but too nice to argue.

Perfuma - Head of costumes. Castaspella and her get along great, they practically have the same personality. Crushing on Scorpia.

Frosta - Costumes. Cousins with Mermista. Comes bc she heard about the chaos and drama that goes down. Will run shows if she doesn’t have hockey practice.

But then two tragedies occurred

Tragedy 1: Angella had to step down as director bc Micah was in the hospital or something idk

Tragedy 2: 2 days later, Sea Hawk breaks his leg pretty bad and he won’t be better in time for the show

So Shadow Weaver takes over as director

Some Shadow Weaver background info: She was a famous actress many years ago and thinks this high school production stuff is below her. She still has a lot of connections to the professional world that she uses from time to time. She wants Adora to follow in her footsteps as a famous actor despite Adora being an incredibly bad actor. She hates that Adora does crew and not acting, but couldn’t do anything about it. Until now.

Now that she’s director and they’re down a Fiyero, she basically forces Adora to play Fiyero, despite the other capable actors who could’ve done it and Adora’s own protests. Think something like: “why can’t bow do it? I’ll be the wizard if there really aren’t enough actors!” “Oh no, bow is the only one who can hit the wizards notes bla bla bla”

Adora doesn’t want to do it, but she also doesn’t want the department to not be able to do the show. Plus she would get to hang out with Catra a lot which would be cool

I’m guessing you can already tell where the conflict is coming from, but we had some very clear ideas of stuff that happened, like

Adora was behind bc she wasn’t going to play the role originally, she’s never acted before, and she can’t dance. So she has a lot of one on one practices with Huntara, the choreographer. Before getting the role, the only practices Adora would watch if she didn’t have crew were the dance practices. She went purely to watch Catra, but Catra thinks that she has a crush on Huntara.

Tension and miscommunication, y’know?

Bow and Glimmer are both very supportive but also nervous bc they know that Adora is extremely bad at acting

Sea Hawk has never seen Adora try to act before, so he doesn’t see what the issue is. Once he’s well enough to go to school again, he comes to every rehearsal even tho he can’t be in the show. And then he sees. And then he’s like, oh no.

But he tries to be supportive and pump Adora up.

Adora is feeling a lot of pressure bc of her new role and doesn’t want to screw things up for everyone.

Catra is a little pissed off that she’s been paired up with someone who can’t act for her senior show, so she’s a little snippy at first, and Adora is tense, and it’s a mess

But Shadow Weaver doesn’t care, and ends up blaming every problem they have during an acting scene with Adora and Catra on Catra, even though she’s the best actor in the department. Because ✨favoritism✨

And you know, they do the whole hot-cold, she hates me, she’s cute, I love her but she doesn’t like me, bla bla bla throughout the course of the show

A week before opening night, Shadow Weaver makes things worse by mentioning that she invited her friend who’s a talent scout to watch the show. Shadow Weaver wants the scout to help get Adora into the acting business.

Catra wants to use this opportunity to get her name out there, so she needs her performance to be perfect

Which is hard to do when her love interest couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag

It’s two days before the show and they still haven’t practiced the kiss scene. Every time they brought it up before, like “should we practice the kiss? I mean, only if you want we don’t have to”, they both got the impression that the other didn’t want to kiss them

So it’s 2 days before the show, and Shadow Weaver is like, you gotta practice the kiss

So they kiss, and Catra is like, whoa she’s a really good kisser, so she’s quiet after the kiss

And of course, Adora takes that silence as “she hated the kiss and she hates me” as you do

So their practices the next two days are even worse than they were before

Finally, it’s opening night. The scout is coming and they’re out of time. Shadow Weaver ends up shoving Catra and Adora into a closet. She does her whole “you don’t want to let me, your friends, or the audience down do you? Whatever’s distracting you needs to go” to Adora, and then she turns to Catra and is like “fix what you’ve done, I know you sabotaged her you useless child. You’re going to be the reason this show goes horribly” and then she leaves

AND CATRA AND ADORA ACTUALLY TALK I KNOW IM SHOCKED TOO

Adora’s like, sorry I’ve been so weird the past two days, I just realized I really like you after we kissed, but I know you don’t feel that way about me, sorry if that makes it weird

And Catra’s like, Adora you idiot I love you

And they kiss

And Bow finds them still kissing in the closet 20 minutes before the show opens and rushes them to Castaspella to get their make up fixed

It ends up being Adora’s best performance because every time they’re about to go on for a scene together, Catra tells her to forget about the audience and just focus on her

The scout ended up liking Catra and Double Trouble a lot to Shadow Weaver’s disappointment

Facts that aren’t important to the main plot, but definitely happened

One time, before Sea Hawk broke his leg, Catra was trying out her harness for the defying gravity and other flying scenes, and Swift Wind, who does fly, accidentally dropped her and she landed on Adora

No Good Deed was the best moment in the show, and the amount of emotion Catra was able to put into her performance during that song was a little frightening but also made a lot of people tear up

The second best scene in the show was surprisingly As Long as you’re Mine, because Adora was actually able to forget about the audience and just focus on her love for Catra

The show last year was Mean Girls. Catra was Regina. Glimmer was Gretchen(you can’t argue that she doesn’t give off, “I don’t think my father, the inventor of toaster stroodle, would be very pleased to hear about this” vibes). Mermista was surprisingly amazing as Karen, and played her deadpan perfectly. No one knows how she did it. Sea Hawk was Cady, Double Trouble was Janice, and Bow was Damien. They reference their experiences during this show during Wicked, but the only thing Adora remembers about that production is how hot Catra was during World Burn.

Ironically (or unironically, idk), Glimmer once said “I don’t think my mother, the director of the show, will be very pleased to hear about this” to an actor who was found sabotaging Catra’s mic for the show before Mean Girls. Catra thought Shadow Weaver put her up to it but there was no proof.

It’s Spring and Patton isgraduating.

They all knew it would happen. Anobvious outcome. Why wouldn’t it happen? Logan didn’t meet Patton until hissenior year. The months in between then and now are not altogether infinitesimal.Logically, Logan knew this would happen.

But as Logan sits up in thebleachers of the auditorium, sandwiched in between Virgil and Roman, he findshimself frowning down at the sea of red-cloaked graduates in their seats downbelow, each one waiting for their name to be called.

Logan didn’t think he would behere. That’s it, isn’t it?

That first day, when Patton draggedhim across the lunch room to sit with his friends—Logan never imagined apossibility that it would lead him here, sitting in the crowd, supporting his friend.

What does Logan remember from hisown graduation? Hardly anything, if he’s being honest. The principal and valedictorianand whoever-else-just-had-to-say-a-speech droned on, and he had sat amongst hispeers tuning all of it out. He’d never been a fan of fanfare, and the ceremony hadnumbed his brain with boredom.

Pitiful, isn’t it? Logan had beenbored at his own graduation. What was there to get excited about? He had knownhe would get his diploma and go on to college. It had been an absolute. Whathad there been to celebrate then? His classmates’ success? Although he knewthem, he didn’t know them, so why should he care?

Practical, if not cold.

Logan watches as one-by-one thestudents walk up onto the stage when their name is called. Throughout the entireceremony, Patton has been looking up at them every couple of minutes, facebeaming and hand waving excitedly at them.

Logan wonders if he himself wouldhave been this excited if he had formed any lasting attachments in high school.His parents and grandfather had been amongst the audience that day, there tosupport him. They had been very proud, but that was his family and that hadbeen expected by that point too.

On either side of him, screamserupt. He startles, only to realize that Virgil and Roman had shot up to let loosea chorus of cheers.

Patton’s name had been called andhe almost missed it.

Logan stands as well, clapping andoffering what he can. Patton looks beyond joyous. He hops up the stage stepsand—rather than shake the principal’s hand—he outright hugs the man.

“Look at that dork,” Virgil snorts.

“He’s so happy,” Roman agrees.

“I think the principal is uncomfortable,”Logan comments.

“How much do you want to bet thatPatton’s doing that on purpose?” Virgil asks.

“Why would he do that on purpose?”

Virgil and Roman share a look overLogan. Logan huffs. This is all part of theirPatton-can-actually-be-really-passive-aggressive agenda.

“I just don’t see it.”

“That’s the point, Specs. He’s goodat it.”

Patton smiles a satisfied smile allthe way back to his seat. The principal straightens his jacket like he’s justbeen knocked over by an unruly dog.

“What do you think, Finding Emo?Should we do the same when we graduate?”

“Or we could accidentally push himoff the stage.”

“Virgil.”

“What? I said accidentally.”

The conversation continues, mostlycentering around how much they disliked the principal.

From down the rows of bleachers,Logan’s gaze drifts down to Patton’s family. His parents and all of his siblingsare in attendance.

Patton’s little brother is watchingLogan. He’s looking back over his shoulder, staring up at him. Dee’s expressionis blank, observing what Logan will do.

Logan turns away and listens to astory from Roman and Virgil’s freshman year when they got in trouble with theprincipal.

The ceremony drags on and eventuallycomes to an end. Everyone’s getting up from their seats and Logan doesn’t makea fuss when Roman steers him through the crowd.

“What? You’re so tiny. Don’t wantto lose you.”

“Figuratively bite me.”

Well, not much of a fuss anyway.

They go to wait out in the lobbyarea. So many people are coming and going and grouping off and taking picturesand smiling. Roman and Virgil are talking with some of their classmates, andLogan’s just …

He’s not contributing to theconversation anymore. Not that anybody is asking for his opinion on anything.He sees that his presence is inconsequential, so he doesn’t feel guilty forslipping away.

Logan heads outside. There’s morefamilies and graduates hanging around by the entrance. Logan steers clear ofthem and makes his way to Roman’s car. They’re all going out to eat afterwardsanyway. It’s not like Logan will miss anything.

Virgil finds him sitting againstthe back bumper. It can’t have been more than ten minutes.

“Found ya,” Virgil says.

“You were looking for me?”

The noise is not as oppressive outhere. People walk by and cars filter out, but it’s all in passing and gonebefore it’s really began.

Fleeting. It’s all so fleeting.

“Patton is … happy,” Loganobserves. It’s not anything new, merely a conversation opener. It’s not really hisstyle and Virgil knows it. He’s staring Logan down but Logan is busy watchingthe world pass them by.

“I’d be happy too. High school isjust a load of bullshit. Patton’s free now.”

“He still has college.”

“Yeah, but that’s better than highschool at least. Don’t have to deal with all the petty drama and stupid kidsand teachers who think they know everything.”

“There are also professors whothink they know everything, even when they clearly do not.”

“Touché,” Virgil acquiesces, notcommenting on how familiar Logan seems to be on the subject.

“How much longer do you think they’llbe?”

“Forever and a half. They’reprobably taking about a million pictures.”

“Unlikely. I’m sure their phones donot have that much memory storage.”

“You know, sometimes I think you takethings literally just to mess with me.”

“I have no idea what you mean.”

Virgil laughs and it’s a softcomfort.

Night had fallen a while ago. Beamsfrom headlights break through the shadows from time to time. Red-robed figuresare easy to pick out. One of those graduation gowns could belong to Patton, butfrom this distance it’s hard to tell.

“Lo … what’s wrong?”

“What makes you think something’swrong?”

Virgil levels a look at him. “Ialways think something’s wrong. And sometimes I’m even right about it.”

“And you think that this is one ofthose times?”

“I know that this is one ofthose times.”

“Irrefutable evidence, surely.”

“Is it Patton?”

Logan digs his fingers into the legsof his pants. It’s wrinkling the material. Logan hates wrinkled clothing, yethe’s doing it anyway.

“What makes you think my unconfirmed‘wrong state’ is caused by Patton?”

“You’re the one who brought him upfirst.”

“We are at his graduation.”

“Yeah, we are.”

“…”

“He’ll be moving away soon forcollege.”

“… yes, I know.”

“A whole four hours away. Notexactly a quick trip.”

“Yes Virgil, I know.”

“We can call him if we want, but I’msure he’s gonna be super busy with college stuff.”

“Yes, he will be.”

“And then even phone calls willprobably turn out to be too much effort. At some point we won’t even be talking.”

“Do you have a point to thisnegative ruminating?”

“It’s what you’re thinking, right?Patton’s going to move away soon, and we’ll still be here, and he’s going toforget about us.”

He’s not wrong. That surprisesLogan more than anything, mostly because Virgil has given words to a verycomplicated bundle of emotion that Logan has been struggling to unravel.

“How do you know that?” Logan asksquietly.

Virgil shifts, his forearms restingon his knees, fingers laced together. “Because I’ve been thinking it too.”

Oh.

Somehow, in all of Logan’spondering, he’s forgotten that Virgil and Roman have known Patton for manyyears more than he has. And that Virgil is prone to anxious thoughts. Thisshould have been expected.

Or perhaps not so expected. IfLogan is struggling to pinpoint his own emotional distress, he can be evenworse at times when it comes to other people’s emotions.

“You have Roman, at least,” Logansays. It’s an attempt at comfort, but the words are layered with a hard edge.

Oh, that’s jealousy right there.

Virgil’s brows furrow. “What do youmean? I’ve got you too, right?”

Logan tilts his head back, eyesroaming over the dark sky. There’s nothing but clouds. “Not for long. You andRoman won’t be long behind Patton, and then I’ll be …”

Here. Alone.

Funny how that’s never bothered himbefore.

Virgil groans loudly, making Loganjump in the relative quiet. He covers his face with his palms, pressing theheel of his hands over his eyes.

“Logan, do you really think we’regoing to forget about you or something?”

“Perhaps not forget, but it is entirelypossible that when encountering a new environment and workload that—”

“Nope, stop, don’t even finishthat.”

“But—”

“Seriously Lo, that’s not how it’sreally going to turn out. We’re not going to lose touch or anything.”

“But even you said—”

“I know what I said. I’m wrong a lotof the time. I might be worried about it, but I know Patton’s not goingto let us stop being friends. I mean, have you met the guy?”

“… perhaps once or twice.”

Virgil snorts and Logan feels alittle better for it. “Alright smartass. Just admit we’re both being dumb andthat the power of friendship or whatever will prevail.”

“The power of friendship?”

“Ugh, leave me alone, it’s probablywhat Patton or Roman would say. Just admit we’re dumb already.”

“I’m quite smart actually. Have youseen my GPA?”

“I hate you so much,” Virgil saysand Logan laughs.

Later, when much of the parking lothas emptied out, Roman and Patton find them.

“You guuuuys!” Patton yells,running up to them. His red cap is missing and Logan wonders if he’s alreadylost it. “Where were you? We were taking pictures!”

“Ew,” Virgil and Logan say at thesame time. They smile at each other.

“Not really my thing,” Virgil says.

“I’m not partial to them myself,”Logan agrees.

“And I’ve heard cameras steal yoursoul. Wouldn’t want my soul to get sucked out, if I have one.”

“Yes, that would be terrible.”

“You both are terrible,” Romaninterrupts. “And clearly you enable each other too much.”

“Look at Princey, pulling out thebig words.”

“From where did he pull them?”

“I would say ‘brain’, but the jury’sstill out on that one.”

Roman gasps in offense.

Logan watches them bicker, afondness overcoming him, syrupy sweet. He glances over to Patton who’s watchingthem with the same expression. He catches Logan’s gaze and smiles.

“One picture?” Patton pleads. “Justof the four of us? For me?”

Logan puts on a show of sighing. “IfI must, then so be it.”

“Yay!” Patton cheers and throws hisarms around Logan. “Thank you Logey-Wogey!”

Logan’s expression softens. “You’rewelcome … Patty-Watty.”

Patton’s excited screams can be heardall the way back to the auditorium.

DCOM Rankings #89: Radio Rebel

the reason this review took so long is that I’m engaged now!! Im a fiancé!! So that happened.

Anywayyyyy time to talk about this cringe fest! Now there was a brief tik tok trend like a year ago about this movie and I think it distorted my views on the movie just a little bit but honestly I think it deserved it. There are rumors that Disney plus doesn’t have this movie because it’s ashamed of it. But really it’s just copyright laws, cuz it was made in conjunction with a Canadian company.

BUT I was able to watch the whole thing on YouTube for free so if any of you want to watch it for whatever messed up reason, someone recorded it on their tv in its entirety in 39 parts. Not good quality at all but they put the subtitles on and there’s no background noise so it was an easy watch (in that aspect...).

So where do I even start with this movie? I honestly thought frienemies was the cringiest thing I’ve ever seen...oh boy. I was way wrong. Well actually, let me correct myself, this movie is both cringey AND sends bad messaging!

I’m trying to think if there’s anything good about this movie I can say before I completely obiterate it...hmmmmm. I will say this! It was way more entertaining than Frienemies. And some of the other C and below movies on my list. It kept my attention and now it’s kind of iconic (in a not so good way but still).

But like the attention wasn’t always good attention. So let’s just dive in to the review and if I find something good I’ll talk about it but this is basically a roast. And I’m here for it!

So...again it’s hard to know where to start but let’s go with the overall story. I LIKE the concept of an alter ego radio host who is actually super shy in real life. I really do think that’s interesting! But the execution of this was really not easy to watch....It’s like a really cringey insane version of hatching Pete. I would prefer hatching Pete over this any day of my life. Even if that movie still wasn’t the best either. If they were less over the top with it and actually got real, with real problems, then maybe I would have liked it.

Okay, the characters. I don’t really like any of them maybe except for Gavin. He was the only sane character in the entire movie. And I think the only person that got the message of the movie (the good message anyway) while his band mates are literally in another world, like shut up you’re in high school!!! It was the most annoying scene when Gavin was like “hey have you seen Tara? She’s supposed to be here for our school assignment” “omg stop thinking about Tara, only think about Stacy, she’s higher class and good for our image”

“Ummm yeah I literally just asked you if you’ve seen her because we were partnered up on a school project and we literally present next . School?? Do you remember school?? The place we’re at right now? Where we have homework and books and normal things going on? Do you even care that you’re not in class right now??”

I get that like Gavin calls him out on his bullshit a little bit but I wish he took an extra punch like what I said above. Anyway...

I think I would have liked Tara a lot more if it wasn’t Debbie Ryan playing her. And I do feel bad because she was great in suite life, but she literaly cannot play a shy character, because she’s not a shy person, at least that’s how I perceive her to be based on interviews and such. But besides the acting piece. She goes out and gives all this great advice to folks but never takes it herself. That and, I watched one review that made a really good point, Tara’s messaging is really mixed. Some of it is good, like telling folks to wear red tomorrow as a solidarity thing, that was good! But telling folks to disrupt class and stick it to the man, and get people in trouble, including the school, yikes. Like she was under the threat of expulsion the entire time and it was seen as an unfair thing in the movie, ummm no that was pretty justified if you hired an entire radio station to have a unauthorized dance party in the school parking lot during the day time. I would understand if they threatened expulsion after the “wear red” thing or if something happened off school property, like far off, not just a foot. But yeah I wish her messaging was more consistent with “be who you are” and “get rid of the classist high school system” rather than “stick it to the teachers and principal, they suck and take away your ipods!”

As for the other characters, they’re just kind of annoying, they try to be funny but they’re just cringey and the writers/director are clearly out of touch with how high school kids really act. (I hate the best friend character so much) And the PARENTS! Let’s talk about the parents for a second! Not only does Tara condone disrespecting your teachers in the name of...freedom? but her parents are all for it! Even when Tara was actually worried about getting expelled. Her mom was literally “I don’t careee you’re giving people a voice at the cost of your high school permanent record and college acceptances!” When her dad walks into the studio one day and was like “hey not cool to use the slam name to throw an unauthorized party at your school” “but I’m giving them a voice” “oh okay then carry on!”.

Ok, I GET what the message of the movie was trying to be. Well actually I don’t now that I think about it. But obviously it was all good intentions. Like all the stuff about being your true authentic self but also not being different from your classmates....? Like I really think they needed to stick with one message and stay in that lane, because it gets too confusing that way. But anyway, I GET what they were trying to go for, it just failed miserably. That was the movie’s main problem. It wanted to connect with high school teens on a deeper level and 1. It didn’t know what avenue to take so it took all of them, and 2. It ended up being the least relatable thing on television.

Basically, it’s like everyone is in another dimension where normal people don’t exist. It’s all these crazy wacky over the top characters in a place where no one cares about school. Only social status and fame. Even the parents agree. But oh noooo that mean ol’ principal, who yes was also a mustache twisty villain, took my iPod and now it’s revenge time. Like okay Stacy was the true villain here, she manipulated everybody, including the principal, into doing what she wanted. But no it’s all the principal’s fault because she’s the authority! And you’re made to hate her because she says evil stuff. This movie was just all over the place and didn’t know what to do with itself. So this review is also all over the place because of it.

Maybe it’s because I’ve officially grown out of the new movies. Maybe if I was younger I would have liked this movie a lot more. Maybe I’m biased because I watched a few other reviews before posting this one. I don’t know. But I think this movie has a lot more wrong with it that just being cringey. I now expect most of not all the future DCOMS to be at least a little cringey just because they are being made for a new generation. It’s sad, but at least it will be over soon!

Okay grade time! I honestly don’t know if I want to give this a minus or not. Like I said, this was bad but kind of a hilarious bad. Like it’s still somewhat entertaining but in a bad way. It kept my attention at least. So maybe I’ll stick with a regular C on this one. I feel like I should give it a D but I don’t know....I feel weird because the movie obviously had a big ish budget for a DCOM I feel like, so the movie LOOKS fine. Agghhhh. But yeah if I’m struggling to find one or two good things about this movie, maybe I should put it at a D level. Hmmm would I rather watch this or den brother....? Definitely this! So wherever it goes, it’s going above that for sure.

Sighhh ranking these is going to be harder than I thought...but it is what it is! I have no idea what the next movie is, I didn’t check the list, so it will be a surprise! See ya then! Hope I post this review in a somewhat timely manner...

What are the Speed Control Method of Induction Motors

Hello, fellows, i hope all of you are having fun in your life. In today’s tutorial, we will have a look at speed Control Method of Induction Motors. There are many motors working in our environment some are working in our homes and some in industries to make our working simplest. The electrical motor nowadays has become crucial source of energy in our different engineering works. The purpose and the performance essential for these motors has many ranges. When we discuss the speed controlling portion of different motors, then we know that the stepper motor and serve motors govern their speed by the pulse train or Pulse wave (A pulse wave or pulse train is a type of non-sinusoidal wave-form which includes square waves and similarly periodic but asymmetrical waves). But the induction motors and brush-less DC motors govern (control) their speed with the exterior resistance or DC voltages. The induction motors have constant speed, which means that the during all load variation it has almost same speed. Speed control of DC shunt motor can be change without any loss in its efficiency, but in case of induction motor speed variations cause to decrees in its efficiency and power factor loss. As we know almost every industry and in our homes induction motor is working so its speed control factor required in its many applications. In this post we will discuss different methods of speed control of induction motors and their other parameters. So, let’s get started with the What are the Speed Control Method of Induction Motors. What are the Speed Control Method of Induction Motors Before the invention of current solid-state drives, induction motors were not considered suitable for such application where speed variation is required. For normal working induction motor is restricted to work on the slip less than the five percent, and speed changing on this range is almost direct proportionate to the load of motor. Though if we increase the slip of motor, the efficiency will be decreased, as we have discussed that the copper loss at rotor (PRCL) is direct proportionate to the slip (S) of motor. Recall this formula. PRCL = sPAG There are two methods by which the speed of induction motor can be monitored (controlled). First on is to change the synchronous speed (nsync) which is the speed of rotation of magnetic field of stator and the rotor. The second method is to change the slip (s) of motor according to the load on the shaft of motor. The synchronous speed (nsync) of an induction motor is given by this formula (nsync) =120 (fe/p) From this equation we can see that the first method by which we can vary synchronous speed is to vary the electrical frequency and second is to change the no of poles of motor. Slip control can be done by changing either the rotor resistor or the terminal voltage (VT) of the motor. Speed Control Methods of Induction Motors There are many methods by which we can control the speed of induction motor. These methods are described below. Induction Motor Speed Control by Pole Changing. Induction Motor Speed Control by Changing the Line Frequency. Induction Motor Speed Control by Changing the Line Voltage. Induction Motor Speed Control by Changing the Rotor Resistance. Let’s discuss these method one by one with the detail. Induction Motor Speed Control by Pole Changing There are 2 ways by which we can vary the no of poles in induction motors to regulate the speed of motor. These two are described below. Multiple stator wingdings. The method of consequent poles. The technique of pole variation is older, firstly it was used in 1897. This technique works on the fact that the poles in stating wingdings can be vary by the (2:1) factor just varying the connections of wingdings coil. In given diagram you can see that the stator of 2-pole induction motor at which we have to apply pole changing technique. You can see from the diagram that every coil has very less pitch value about sixty to ninety degrees.

Guys in given below diagram you can see that the phase winding which are draw separately for clear observation. We can see in the circuit which is label in diagram as (a) it describes the direction of current flowing in phase a of stator wingdings during normal working operation. You can see that the field left the stator in the upper phase group (N pole) and go in the stator in the lower phase group (S pole). These wingdings now make 2 poles at stator. Now let’s we assume that the direction of current (I) moving in the lower phase group on the stator is inverted then the field left stating part of motor in both the lower phase and upper phase group everyone will behave like the north (N) pole. The flux in this motor should coming back to the stator among the 2 phase groups, which creates a couple of resultant south (S) magnetic poles. Note that the now there are 4 poles on stator two time more than earlier motor has.

The rotor in this motor has cage designing, as the cage rotor because this rotor always has same no of poles as exists on the stator and it can very its pole as no of poles vary on the stator. When motor is re-connected from 2-pole to 4-pole operation, the resultant extreme torque of the induction motor can be the similar as earlier (constant-torque joining), half of its preceding value (square-law-torque assembly, which used for fans), or two time its preceding value (constant-output-power assembly), dependent on how the stator wingdings are re-positioned. Given diagram shows the group of induction motor torque-speed characteristic curves for speeds under base speed, assume that the magnitude of the stator voltage fluctuates linear with frequency.

  When the frequency provided to the motor increases the value of rated frequency of motor the voltage of stator remains constant the rated values. Though saturation attentions would allow the voltage to be elevated above the rated value under such conditions, it is restricted to the rated voltage to provide protection to the insulation of wingdings of motor. The larger the frequency above base speed, the higher the denominator of equation will become. Disadvantage Motor Speed Control by Changing the Line Frequency Some years ago, the main drawback was that there were need of special generator or mechanical frequency changer to change the frequency of supply. This problem has disappeared with the development of modern solid-state variable-frequency motor drives. In fact, the frequency variation with the solid-state motor drives has becomes necessary method for speed control by frequency changing. The main point you should keep in mind that this method can apply every induction motor to control the speed but pole changing method was not applicable to any motor without special stator wingdings. Induction Motor Speed Control by Changing the Line Voltage The torque induced in the induction motor is directly proportional to the square of the applied voltage. If the load at induction motor shaft has the torque-speed characteristic like which are shown in the given diagram, then the speed of induction motor can be regulate (control) under certain limit by changing the voltage of line. Speed control by line voltage changing method is used for small motor like fan motor. Induction Motor Speed Control by Changing the Rotor Resistance In case of the wound rotor induction motor it is likely to vary the figure of the torque- speed curve by adding additional resistors in the rotor circuitry of induction motor. After addition of resistor in rotor circuitry new torque speed characteristic curve is shown in given diagram.

  If we have the torque-speed curve of the load of the motor like shown in given diagram, then variation in the resistance of rotor will speed of the motor. But addition of extra resistor in the circuit of rotor will decrease the efficiency of the motor. BRUHN, BOURNONVILLE AND BALLET

Introduction

In the spring of 1955, a Danish dancer of unusual promise became an international star. Dance Magazine, recognizing that his­tory was in the making, made its now fa­mous photographic record (July ‘55 issue) of the rehearsals in which Alicia Markova taught the young soloist the role of Al­brecht for the Ballet Theatre production of “Giselle." Since that time Erik Bruhn has continued to grow as an artist. Where- ever he goes, his immaculate, thrilling dancing is met with acclaim.

Last year Lillian Moore, American dance historian-teacher-author-critic and frequent contributor to Dance Magazine, long entranced with the “Bournonville style” in which the Royal Danish Ballet has for over a century trained its danc­ers, persuaded Mr. Bruhn to collaborate with her on an informal but intense study of the teaching methods of the great 19th- century choreographer. The book, co­authored by Miss Moore and Mr. Bruhn, has just been published by the Macmillan Co. Its title is “Bournonville and Ballet Technique,” its cost, $5.00.

The following is Mr. Bruhn's introduc­tion to “Bournonville and Ballet Tech­nique.” Bournonwille’s foreword to the technique manual he called “Etudes choregraphiques” is also reprinted from the lovingly-fashioned collaboration of the authors, who have successfully recreated a major link in ballet history.

Hours of waiting went by. It was very noisy. Some children were crying, others playing wildly all over the place; the grown-ups talked incessantly. Some of the children, either on their own initiative or at the demand of their mothers, were prac­tising “tricks” or little solos with which they hoped to attract the special attention of the ballet master or the teachers who, at any moment now, were to decide our future.

Up to this point, all the commotion had caused me just to want to leave the place. Mу aunt (who had taken me there, be­cause my mother was busy) finally bribed me to stay and go through with the audi­tion. It cost her one kroner (about a shill­ing, or fifteen cents).

Young ballet students, 16 to 18 years old, worked very hard separating the chil­dren from the parents, putting us in lines, and eventually dividing us into groups of fifteen to twenty, in different studios. It was something of an anticlimax to find out that all we had to do was march, walk in time to music and show our feet. Then we were examined by the doctors.

When my aunt learned that I had been accepted to enter the ballet school the fol­lowing season, she rewarded me with an­other kroner.

During the long summer vacation I al­most managed to forget that I was to enter the Royal Theatre again. There I would not only attend the ballet school, but re­ceive my entire academic education. As I recall it, I had a rather difficult time adjusting myself to that special kind of world which is the theatre, or in this case, the world that children consider the theatre to be.

If  I knew little about ballet, I knew even less about the training I was to receive for the next ten years. Very soon every child in the school was aware of August Bournonville. At that time, al­though there were some contemporary works in the repertoire of the Danish Bal­let, its centre and very base consisted of Bournonville’s ballets. There were many opportunities for us children to appear on the stage. To be chosen as one of the eight children to dance in Konservatoriel was the goal of all of us. Since the same dance combinations were given in our daily classes, we all strove to perfect ourselves in the steps, so that one day we might be given the opportunity to perform them.

To be called on to fill any small role in one of Bournonville’s ballets, or even to be one of the group of children that he used in the third act of Napoli as a back­ground for the soloists who performed the famous variations and pas de deux, was the focal point of our life and work in the theatre. I used to stand with the rest of the crowd on the bridge in Napoli, dreaming of one day taking part in that wonderful dancing, or even doing one of those exciting solos that took place on the stage below us. All the principal artists who now dance in Napoli have stood in the back as children, at one time or another. Some of us even got to dance the very same solos we dreamed about.

After a couple of years at the school, I had begun to feel much better about it. With the other children, I shared in the general fun and excitement of work and play, as well as some unanticipated dis­appointments and frustrated hopes. Each year from 1937 to 1947 I passed the ballet examination unnoticed. This was good, for many of the children, through letters ad­dressed to their parents, received word that because of their lack of progress the theatre would no longer be able to keep them in the school, nor recommend that they continue in ballet. During these ten years, I was trained in the Bournonville school. There were six different classes, for the different days of the week. They were “set” and were re­peated with hardly a change from the day you entered the school as a child, until you graduated, and continued on as a pro­fessional dancer. At that time the children received the same strenuous training as the adults. Everyone, whether a beginner or a member of the company, was given the same exercises.

The Bournonville school, as it is known up to this-day, was formed by teachers and ballet masters who followed him. It was based mostly on steps and variations that exist in his ballet productions. Apart from a few months of lessons from the bal­let master during my last year, I knew as a student only the set Bournonville class­es as they were taught then by the teach­ers who had charge of the children from their entrance up to the age of 18.

In the old school, the barre work was extremely short, fast and very strenuous on the legs! The centre work had very little adagio movement, and very few pir­ouette combinations of importance. The barre work was to warm up for variations which contained steps and movements which would be required in performance, and which were constructed mostly to strengthen jumps and beats. Some of these things are not used outside the Bournon­ville school. To me, however, they are not' lost steps. All my life I have attempted to master them, and I believe that they have great value when added to a good basic foundation. Properly applied, they are excellent for ballon, batterie and any allegro movement.

As it is known today, the Bournonville school is really more a choreographic style than a method of teaching. The style that this great choreographer created firm­ly established the Danish ballet and its traditions. Until ten years ago, this par­ticular style was rarely seen outside Den­mark. Then the Royal Danish Ballet began to visit some of the major cities in the western world. Several of Bournonville’s works were included in their repertoire, and for the first time an audience outside Denmark discovered his ballets and re­sponded enthusiastically to them. London, Edinburgh, New York and other cities ac­claimed his style as a new discovery. In­deed, it was entirely new to most of these audiences. Ever since it was created, this Bournonville style has been cherished by each generation of dancers in Denmark, and carefully passed on. From childhood, the dancers are taught the essence of a period that has long been forgotten every­where else.

Bournonville was a great dancer who had been trained by some of the finest teachers in Paris during the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Had travelling been easier in those days, and had the status of the male dancer been more gen­erally recognized by the European public, he might not have settled in Copenhagen. His choreography established the vital im­portance of the position of the male danc­er. Because he was a strong dancer as well as a truly great choreographer, he created roles which remain a technical challenge to this day. He not only considered the man equal in importance to the ballerina, but in some ballets made him the central figure. As a result, the standard of the male dancer in the Royal Danish Ballet has always remained on a high level.

To some degree the Bournonville reper­toire, in all its greatness, has perhaps kept Denmark from producing ballerinas in the style associated with and produced by the great Petipa ballets. However, Bournon­ville in no sense asked less of the ballerina, technically. In most of his ballets you will find her having to dance variations as strenuous and difficult as those of the lead­ing male dancer, and in the pas de deux as conceived by him they often dance op­posite one another executing the same steps. These were designed to stress the vitality and strength of the man, so some­times they may have unjustly revealed the weaknesses of the ballerina. I am speak­ing only of the actual dancing in Bour­nonville’s ballets, and not of the charac­terizations, which in most cases were pro­foundly imagined, beautifully balanced, and in perfect accord with his themes and the means of expression of that period.

The Bournonville repertoire and school developed fine performers for one specific style. However, it did not produce dancers of sufficient range and versatility to meet the challenge of today’s ballets. Therefore, changes were made in the school.

In 1951 the Royal Danish Ballet had the good fortune to obtain the services of the great Mme Vera Volkova. When she arrived, the entire school was reorgan­ized under her direction. Through her teaching and supervision of the school in general, she has improved the approach to the child, the student and the profes­sional dancer in the various stages through which they must pass. She has raised the technical standards, developing dancers with a greater range, who are more adapt­able to the various styles of contemporary choreographers. The present teachers, and especially the younger ones who develop­ed under her guidance, have naturally been strongly influenced by her way of teaching. To many in Denmark this ap­pears to be a revolutionary change, not in accordance with the long-established Bour­nonville traditions and the maintenance of the Bournonville repertoire. But, as any­one can see, the Danish dancers of today have a stronger and purer technique than ever before. Through the improvement of the school during the past ten years they are now capable of performing, and most successfully, works by such modern cho­reographers as Balanchine, Robbins, Ash­ton and Petit. Previously the new forms which they have created would have been entirely alien to the repertoire of the Royal Danish Ballet and the dancers train­ed exclusively in the Bournonville school.

Soon after I graduated in 1947, I had the opportunity to study in London and Paris, and to dance first with the Metro­politan Ballet in England and later, after a time at home, with the American Ballet Theatre. I began to get acquainted with different schools and to discover other ways of training and approach in the bal­let world outside of Denmark. I began to understand the importance of a varied and well-rounded training. For a while I even wanted to forget all about the Bournon­ville school, while I was trying to strength­en these aspects of technique which it had perhaps neglected, while gaining new and important experience as a performer in a new and different repertory.

Then, in 1951, as I was leaving Copen­hagen for my second tour with the Amer­ican Ballet Theatre, our leading Danish ballet critic, Svend Kragh-Jacobsen, gave me, as a farewell present, a rare little book, «Etudes choregraphiques», written by Bournonville himself. It consists of various exercises, beginning at the barre, through centre work and concluding with combi­nations of steps designed to improve bal­lon and elevation. Bournonville dedicates this book to his pupils and his colleagues, the professional dancers. Perhaps at the time I received it I appreciated only the generous thought which prompted Mr. Kragh-Jacobsen to give it to me, and only vaguely realized that it was possibly also meant to be a reminder of my “past".

In 1959 I brought this little book to the United States and showed it to Lillian Moore. Her interest and enthusiasm, and her knowledge of the history and tradi­tions of the Danish ballet, gave me per­haps my second reminder of my Bournon­ville background, as well as a deeper арpreflation of values I had taken for grant­ed, and an insight into things I had not realized before, in any conscious way. In studying Bournonville’s book, I have come to feel in some ways more in contact with him, and closer to understanding his aims, than when I was first taught his school. When he wrote it for his pupils and dancers, he stressed that they should apply the exercises according to their in­dividual needs. These exercises were de­signed from his own personal experience as a dancer and teacher, and they prove his flexibility and his understanding of a dancer’s body. It is as though, in this book, Boumonville hands you personally and directly his vast knowledge of the ballet and the processes involved in making a dancer.

Some of Bournonville’s exercises are not known, or seldom practised today (or practised differently) outside Denmark. We are not trying to advocate them as a new system, method or secret. However, we think they have a definite value which would be beneficial as a supplement to any dancer's training, when applied cor­rectly (as Bournonville insisted in his lit­tle book) by the teacher or the mature dancer himself. We submit them in the hope that they may prove part of the means with which to achieve greater know­ledge and ever-expanding artistic experi­ence.

Dance is an art, because it demands vo­cation, knowledge and ability. It is a fine art, because it aims towards an ideal, not only of plastic beauty, but also of lyric and dramatic expressiveness.

The beauty which it strives to attain is not founded on vague principles of fash­ion or mere enjoyment, but on the im­mutable laws of nature.

The art of mime encompasses all the changes of the soul: the dance is essen­tially fitted to express joy and to follow the rhythm of the music.

The purpose of art in general and of the theatre in particular (whether its direc­tion be comic or tragic) is to elevate the soul and strengthen the spirit. The dance should, then, arm itself especially against the too pronounced preference of a blase public for effects which are contrary to good manners, good taste and the true interests of art.

Joy is strength; intoxication is weak­ness.  Noble simplicity will always be beau­tiful. The astonishing, on the contrary, soon becomes boring. The dance can, with the aid of music, raise itself to the heights of poetry, but on the other hand it can equally, through excess of acrobatics, de­scend to the stunts of the mountebank. So- called difficulties are executed by numer­ous adepts, but the appearance of ease is achieved only by the chosen few. The sum­mit of talent is to know how to conceal the mechanism through the calm harmony which is the foundation of true grace.

To maintain this easy grace, in the midst of the most fatiguing movements, is the great problem of the dance, and such virtuosity cannot be acquired without good exercises, designed to develop the qual­ities and eliminate the imperfections which everyone, not even excepting the greatest talents,  is obliged to combat. It is such exercises which l present here to my dear pupils as well as to my worthy colleagues, reminding them of the oft-repeated saying, that it is not so much on the number of exercises. as on the care with which they are executedthat progress and skill de­pend.

Erik Bruhn, as co-author with Lillian Moore of Boumonville and Ballet Tech­nique, suggests in his introductory remarks that the book’s lessons might aid the dancer “to achieve greater knowledge and ever-expanding artistic experience.”

An appropriate phrase, for such a pur­pose largely sums up Erik Bruhn’s career to date. From Copenhagen to London to Paris to America, and then ’round the world with American Ballet Theatre, he has constantly re-examined his art, sift­ing for new experiences, new meaning, profiting from each venture. Though it may seem to the audience on certain thea­tre nights that he could not surpass him­self, Erik would retire immediately if he weren't certain of coming closer to per­fection tomorrow.

Last May, the young man was home to his haven in Copenhagen, participating in the Royal Danish Ballet Festival. He stay­ed away from post-performance recep­tions, for minds like his stop functioning in the cocktail party atmosphere. Yet, a dancer who thinks deeply about his work wants to communicate, to hear how his ideas sound, if nothing else. This he did. in quiet, unhurried conversations away from the Royal Theatre.

His thoughts revealed his concentration on the idea of giving more of himself through dance — not in generosity to the audience, but as mental-physical release, total expression, as though he were try­ing to say something with every fiber of his body and brain. He has varied his dance associations over the years to broad­en. intensify and polish this release.

As for his original reason for leaving the Danish ballet in 1947 and going to England. Erik Bruhn doesn't intellectualize. He merely felt “wrong” in the then Boumomille-dominated classes and reper­toire and felt the need to broaden his ex­perience.

Returning periodically in guest capacity. Erik Bruhn seems to dance best in Copen­hagen. In the classical pas de deux, in Chopiniana particularly, and even in the raucous  Carmen, he softens his virtuosity with a poetic restraint, a gentle mascul­inity. that is sometimes lacking in New York. At home he pours forth a noble excellence which seems to summarize his worldwide experience.

In England, on his first contact with the outside world, he saw all that was then new in ballet — Sadlers Wells, Rambert, (p.41) the de Basil Co., Petit, Babilee. He was amazed at the variety of expression.

He joined Metropolitan Ballet, the re­spectable touring company which lasted three years in postwar Britain. One-week stands, dirty hotels, bad food. “But we danced everything.” Two teenagers, Erik Bruhn and Svetlana Beriosova,  danced Spectre de la Rose. Often he was thrown into performance after semi-rehearsal, with colleagues cueing him from the wings. “This is the great challenge. Now you must show what you are, what your train­ing has meant. You must create onstage, sometimes just improvising.”

Bruhn enlarged his repertoire and vocab­ulary in Metropolitan Ballet. During a summer of classes in Paris, he tried to “consolidate” his new technique, to the point of wrenching a knee, which trou­bled him for years after.

Blevins Davis, a patron of Ballet Thea­tre, spotted him in Copenhagen in 1949, and Erik Bruhn was subsequently invited to join the company. That November he made his American debut as Benno, sup­porting Nana Gollner and Igor Youskevitch in a Baltimore Swan Lake. His early parts were Orestes in Helen of Troy, a Pink Boy in Theme and Variations, Paris in Romeo and Juliet, and an occasional Nutcracker pas de deux or Prince Charm­ing. Yet his progress was not too rapid. Though he kept reappearing for Ballet Theatre seasons, he would return each summer to Copenhagen.

It was not until 1954 that he determin­ed, “I will go back to Ballet Theatre, and stay there. If I make mistakes, I will cor­rect them there.” He began to understand that each performance was an accumula­tion of everything that had gone before, good and bad. He realized that he must step on stage each night and dance with all his strength… then reflect between performances…   and dance the next night with new thoughts on the subject, recreating everything.

The key moment is at curtain time, when “you bring all this accumulation to bear, remove you from yourself, and let it happen.”

Ballet Theatre, for him, allowed this type of maturing process. Performances night after night, quick cast changes, hard work, overwork - far different from the security and complacency of a state theatre. Each night was a new challenge, and the young Dane made it a useful one. The payoff came at the storied matinee in May, 1955, when he danced Giselle with Alicia Markova at the Metropolitan Opera House, and the world had a new premier danseur.

Giselle had been under-rehearsed. But he absorbed everything he could from talks with Markova. “She explained just what her character was doing at each mo­ment. Then it was simple. I could natur­ally respond, and find my place. When it was over, I didn’t know quite what had happened. But it had all seemed very na­tural.”

This ability to comprehend the theatri­cal purpose of each movement and mo­ment has been vital in his artistic develop­ment. He has enjoyed collaborating with Birgit Cullberg, watching her drive ahead intensely with her dramatic development, then filling in the sketch with significant movement. He realizes that mime is not separate from dancing, that a pirouette can be happy or - as with Jean, the butler - hateful.

During the three months he spent with the New York City Ballet in 1959-60, he learned to understand and appreciate George Balanchine.

Erik disagrees with the City Center dancers who sometimes complain that Balanchine speaks to them only in technical terms, ignoring the mood and meaning.

 “If you watch him while he is counting ... he doesn’t exactly demonstrate . . . but his body inflection, his facial expres­sion indicate everything he wants.

I learned his Swan Lake by watching him work with Maria Tallchief. As he talked to her, guiding her through the adagio, he unconsciously moved about, re­acting to her movements . . . and I knew then what I should be doing as the Prince.”

He observed that a new Balanchine ballet reaches its peak performance six months after the premiere — “because Balanchine and the dancers keep working on it.” Erik Bruhn disapproves of the too- secure company which studies a ballet for three months, shows in the premiere what it has prepared, and then repeats that single interpretation on succeeding nights.

He would like to dance again with the Balanchine company, “maybe to finish learning Apollo.” But he is vague about the future. He maintains a principal goal — perfection as a dancer-person - yet he prefers to have no pattern of existence, allowing his opportunities to just happen.

He is reputed to be an excellent teacher, and he enjoys teaching. Many Danes hope he will someday be ballet master of the Royal Danish Ballet. Teaching company class occasionally in Copenhagen during the festival, he was very demanding of the boys — naturally, for he demands the impossible of himself. He spoke severely to a budding ballerina in the company, telling her she must now forget what the teacher had said about the Don Quixote variation, and rethink it herself. “You have taken, taken, taken from your teach­ers. Now you must give something.” Again, he meant “giving” as self-expression, re­lease.

Choreography still interests him; but he has composed no complete work since Festa (Ballet Theatre Workshop, 1957), which had artful moments worthy of an­other try. He gathers pieces of music from time to time, and stores them away until he should again feel the choreograph­ic urge.

Erik Bruhn expresses his appreciation for help received from teachers, partners, choreographers and directors — if he is specifically asked. He is not ungrateful, but he seems to rely on no one. Viewing his career as an introspective study, he reflects on his needs and weaknesses, and solves them himself, whether they be emo­tional dilemmas or a suspected flaw in his dance technique.

Some wavering confidence is balanced by his shining, underplayed comic sense.

Perhaps his vigorous forefathers, the Vikings, were like handsome, searching Erik Bruhn - for they, too, were world conquerors.

And by extent, where we ourselves are oriented within the space time continuum. I feel like i could represent this well with a 3d image. We are each our own space time continuum? With all this being understood i believe there is no possible way for us as humans to answer the question of whether there is a god, or what god is. I could be wrong about this but I dont think I personally would be able to. Same with the question of free will. The two are definitely interrelated. I feel like the ideas ive been saying can provide a different framework for talking about questions like this about god and free will and stuff, but the new framework would have to be engaged with/understood more fully in order to get any answers significantly more substantial than what we as humans have already.

But i dont think it actually necessarily refers to a specific threshold thats being passed, i just feel like ive reached a level today that is noteworthy because of how much i am able to understand. {In a certain way} is purposefully vague because again im not really sure if there is a threshold for what that certain way actually is, or how you might determine it. Its more that i reached a significant level of understanding existence today. But when people talk about the “third eye being open”, and they actually mean it, this is definitely in the realm of what they mean. Out of all the people in the world who make claims about having their “third eye open”, probably not very many of them mean something similar as i do when I talk about my experience of the third eye being open.

Oh yes I also had been thinking about how difficult human language is to express what I’m trying to say because its not really equipped for it. like i just want to put quotations around every single word because words are just approximations for the ideas they are trying to express even when talking about ideas that our language is actually designed to describe, not even to mention trying to talk about stuff that it isnt. math concepts (even the few that I actually know anything about) are super super helpful to me in trying to think about and communicate these ideas and now I completely understand what people mean when they say that math is our best bet for being able to communicate with extraterrestrial intelligent life seeing as we have no way of knowing how other beings might perceive information. Wait a minute. Whos even to say that even if our definition of “life” didnt ever evolve anywhere else in the universe, there couldn’t be something else that wasn’t “alive” by this strict definition but not exactly “not alive” either. Section 199A potentially gives real estate investors a deduction equal to 20% of their rental income.

Some real estate investor with, say, $100,000 of rental income might get a $20,000 Section 199A rental property deduction.

But a catch exists. An investor’s real estate activity must generally rise to the level of a trade or business.

General Rule: Regular, Continuous with a Profit Motive

Specifically, the Section 199A regulations require in most cases that a taxpayer’s real estate activity rises to the level of a Section 162 trade or business.

Unhelpfully, Section 162 (another chunk of tax law) doesn’t actually define what a trade or business is. Rather, Section 162 says taxpayers can deduct the ordinary and necessary expenses of running a trade or business–and then it and the related regulations describe the detailed rules for taking these deductions.

Nevertheless, when the Internal Revenue Service, tax accountants and tax attorneys throw around the term “Section 162 trade or business,” what they really mean is an activity that the courts and the Internal Revenue Service in past decisions count as a real trade or business that generates legitimate Section 162 business deductions.

These court and IRS decisions, by the way, all sort of work the same way. And if you happen to be interested, probably your best place to dip toes into the water is the Groetzinger v. IRS Commissioner decision.

Groetzinger summarizes nicely what a Section 162 trade or business needs to look. The activity needs to be continuous and not sporadic. And the activity needs to be conducted with regularity and with a profit motive.

And then here’s the really important point for real estate investors. The Section 199A regulations explicitly say that except in one special case situation, direct real estate investment doesn’t–does not–necessarily rise to the level of a trade or business.

That One Special Case Situation

By the way? The one special case situation where direct real estate investment automatically counts as a trade or business? When someone rents property to another trade or business they own at least 50 percent of.

For example, say you own an office building. Further, say you rent the office building to a corporation or partnership. If you own at least half that entity and it operates a trade or business, your rental property by law counts as a trade or business

But other than this special case, you don’t necessarily get to take the Section 199A rental property deduction just because you own property. You get to take the Section 199A deduction only when your real estate activity rises to the level of a trade or business.

Which means the $64 question is, when does real estate rental activity become a “trade or business.”

Valid Rental Deductions vs Section 162

One other tangential point before we dig into the details–and just so you don’t get off on the wrong track.

Valid rental deductions inside a tax return do not automatically “create” a trade or business.

Real estate rental expense deductions–all that stuff that appears on the Schedule E page in a tax return–don’t actually count as Section 162 expenses.

The expenses count as Section 212 expenses. Section 212 expenses represent the expenses connected to “production of income,” a category of deductions that resembles Section 162 deductions. But Section 212 and Section 162 differ.

And now lets try to nail down this concept of a trade or business as it applies to rental property.

Trade or Business Status: What Counts

People have been arguing about what constitutes a trade or business and so for which activities a taxpayer can take a “Section 162” business deduction for decades.

In a short article for the Journal of Accountancy (available here and well worth reading), tax accountant Jennifer Spiesz and accounting professor Charles Harter summarize a handful of useful court and IRS positions on what activities rise to the level of a trade or business–and what activities don’t.

You want to look at these positions to get clarity on this trade or business stuff.

Revenue Ruling 77-356

In Revenue Ruling 77-356, for example, the IRS said that a member of Congress who earned $1500 by making ten speeches over a year runs a trade or business.

Note: To adjust that $1500 figure for inflation over the roughly 40 years since the IRS published Revenue Ruling 77-356–the ruling appeared in 1977–bump the $1500 to about $6500.

Twisting that example around a bit, doesn’t that suggest that an Airbnb landlord who rents a room ten times over the year and makes a few thousand dollars also counts? I think so.

Or what about a single property landlord who rents an older home for an annual profit of a few thousand and who makes ten “house calls” over the year for repairs or maintenance issues. Does that count? To me, it seems like it does.

You have a profit motive coupled with regular activity and continuity…

Green v. Commissioner

In Green v. Commissioner, an individual gives blood 95 times over a year, earning money as a plasma donor.

So twisting that example around a bit, wouldn’t this example situation work too? A home owner with a large front yard, living across the street from the state fair grounds, rents parking spots 95 times to fair visitors.

This seems to me another example that shows regularity, continuity and a profit motive. (Think about what the guy’s lawn looks like after the fair ends!)

Trade or Business Status: What Doesn’t Count

Again expounding on the examples from Spiesz and Harter’s neat and tidy article, here are some examples of activities that specifically did not rise to the level of a trade or business and then some equivalent “real estate investor” examples I whipped up.

Langford v Commissioner

In Langford v. Commissioner, a professor co-authors a textbook and then, though under no obligation to do so, revises the textbook five years later. That activity doesn’t count. (No continuity and no regularity, right?)

So here’s a real estate version of that sort of example. A professor on summer sabbatical to Europe (maybe to work on a textbook revision?) rents out his home. And say five years later, he again does the same thing. Does that count? I don’t think so. (No continuity and no regularity.)

Levinson v. Commissioner

In Levinson v. Commissioner, a part-time inventor patents and sells his occasional inventions. That activity doesn’t rise to the level of a trade or business because he lacks continuity and regularity.

A real estate version of this situation? Someone with a lake cabin who occasionally rents to vacationers–though not every year. Again, no regularity and no continuity… which should mean no Section 199A deduction.

Chief Counsel Advice 200321018: The Commercial Fisherman

Chief Counsel Advice 200321018 described a situation where a commercial fisherman gets sick and can’t fish. He therefore leases his fishing permit. The IRS attorneys said this doesn’t rise to the level of a trade or business. And arguably the fishing permit leasing action fails on all accounts to be a trade or business: No continuity, no regularity, and no profit motive.

A real estate version of this example might go like this: A homeowner gets sick and checks into assisted care facility temporarily while in recovery. Or maybe into hospice for the last months of life. He or his family rents the house while in the care facility. Again, no continuity, no regularity and no real profit motive.

Revenue Ruling 58-112: The Corporate Officer

In Revenue Ruling 58-112, a corporate officer earned a transaction-based fee for negotiating the sale of some company stock. The lack of continuity and regularity squelched any Section 162 business deductions.

So what about this real-estate-y example. A building owner leases his one property to a tenant on a five year, triple-net lease where the tenant takes care of all of the repairs and maintenance. In my book, this example fails: Yes, the landlord profits. And the five year lease maybe shows continuity. But negotiating a triple-net lease once every five years would seem to lack “regularity.”

Private Letter Ruling 9106004: Asthma Sufferer

In Private Letter Ruling 9106004, an asthma sufferer participated in a drug study and earned income by doing so. Here, pretty clearly, the activity probably shows continuity and regularity over the months the drug study occurs. However, surely the asthmatic’s participation in the study lacks a profit motive.

So a real-estate-y example? A handyman buys a small fixer home for a principal residence. He then renovates the home but before his family can occupy the property, surprise! His wife becomes pregnant with twins. They therefore sell the small home for profit and buy a larger home.

Arguably, the issue here would again be the lack of a profit motive: Yes, the family earned a profit. But the renovation wasn’t driven by profit.

Summing Up the Section 199A Rental Property Deduction Examples

Just between you and me? I was initially a little frustrated that the IRS regulations didn’t make it easier for us to identify what is and isn’t a real estate trade or business.

I want a bright line or simple formula.

But that admission made, past court and IRS positions provide clarity.

In fact, the basic requirements of regularity and continuity coupled with the requirement to have a profit motive work well.

A Related Comment

One other thing to share: One of the first examples in the proposed regulations for Section 199A describes a situation where a taxpayer owns several empty, unimproved lots he leases to several suburban airports for parking.

The proposed regulation doesn’t explicitly say this situation rises to the level of a trade or business.

But the example (shown below) implicitly assumes this level of real estate activity does rise to the level of a trade or business. The investor’s real estate investing generates $1,000,000 of qualified business income, or QBI. QBI potentially leads to a Section 199A deduction:

Example 1. D, an unmarried individual, owns several parcels of land that D manages and which are leased to several suburban airports for parking lots. The business generated $1,000,000 of QBI in 2018. The business paid no wages and the property was not qualified property because it was not depreciable. After allowable deductions unrelated to the business, D’s total taxable income for 2018 is $980,000. Because D’s taxable income exceeds the applicable threshold amount, D’s section 199A deduction is subject to the W-2 wage and UBIA of qualified property limitations. D’s section 199A deduction is limited to zero because the business paid no wages and held no qualified property.

The next example in the regulations changes the scenario and says “D” actually has made improvements he’s depreciating. In that revised example, “D” gets a Section 199A deduction.

You and I shouldn’t read too much into the adjective “several” appearing twice.

But to me, the example strongly hints that someone with several rented properties and several tenants qualifies.

Two Closing Comments

Two closing comments about all this stuff.

First, I think anyone serious about building wealth through real estate probably passes the “Section 162 trade or business” test. Profit motivates this person. And surely the person displays continuity and regularity in their activity.

Second, I think anyone haphazardly renting a second home or vacation property probably doesn’t qualify. Say the family loves to vacation in Florida, for example. And say you buy a condo for those vacations but then also rent the place a bit. Probably the irregular rentals to friends and the occasional stranger doesn’t display enough regularity and continuity.

Forget Everything You Know: 15-Year Mortgages Are Best for New & Intermediate Investors

Everyone else on BiggerPockets is wrong. Thats right, you read it here first. Everyone. Even these guys: Personally, I prefer the 30-year mortgage, not only due to the flexibility, but also because Im able to cash flow better with the lower monthly payment. Since Im financing rental properties, my tenants are basically paying off the property, and Im able to keep more of the cash flow due to depreciation. Competitive Advantage Every single item I list for small bank relationships has been a competitive advantage at some point. Quick loan turnarounds let me ink deals that others ponder on. Having a loan officer who knows how to get things done in town is invaluable. That might be getting a repair made or knowing the best agent for flood insurance. If an investor choosesor maybe more accurately has to choose private moneythe disadvantages can be significant. A partner and I are trying to buy a 6-plex right now and are over 90 days trying to get the deal closed. The private money processes have been arduous. We have had an appraiser back out, a requirement for a property managers policies and procedures book, lease reviews by thirdparty legal specialists, and other issues. Not saying that these are necessarily badjust that local banks dont have these burdens and are easier for the new or intermediate investor. Related: Whats Better Financially: Paying Off Your Home Mortgage or Investing That Money? Reinvestment Lack of reinvestment profit is the basis for most objections to using 15 or 20-year loans. An investor doing a basic analysis might rationally opt for 10-15% real estate returns with a 30-year loan over the alternative 5% mortgage interest savings or 8% stock market gains. But there is a fallacy in this logicit implies that the cash flow disappears. That cash flow is not available for reinvestment. False news! That investor has another option. They can use the equity in one property to buy another. This is called cross-collateralization and is possibly the most valuable advantage to using a small, local bank. Cross-collateralizing has two main benefits: Additional investments can be made without any money out of pocket as long as you meet the banks loan-to-value requirements. These are typically 75-80%.Reinvestment of both appreciation and loan principal reductions can be made in short turnaround times. New properties can be bought as often as a buyer likes. This is exactly the method that I have used to grow to a $11M, 160+ property portfolio in small-town, slow-growth communities. I mentioned above that a partner and I are working with private money right now. That will be the first and only loan of its type that I will haveand it has been an absolute pain. Everything else is financed through a total of four small local banks except a single loan with a larger regional bank. In December I purchased 24 units in my hometown for $1.6M. Eight units were from one seller, and 16 were from another. Because of my 10+ year relationship with a small local bank, I could close this somewhat complex deal 45 days after the offers were accepted with no money out of pocket.

Other Benefits Shorter amortizations have additional benefits. The first is that it is an automatic savings plan. It is difficult to go out and buy a new Jeep with money that is not in an operating account somewhere. This will help significantly when I am ready to retire. My plan is to sell a portion of my portfolio, pay down debt, and create the cash flow I will need. Related: 3 Reasons to Consider NOT Paying Off Your Mortgage The second benefit of this equity-build method is to provide a buffer in the event of an economic downturn. If any of the local economies in which I am invested swoon, I can refinance properties to longer amortizations, lowering my monthly payments. Lastly, financing with shorter amortization loans imposes financial discipline. Buying only properties that cash flow to your personal target with a higher monthly payment ensures that an investor is not reaching for marginally profitable properties. An Important Exception This is advice to my 25-year-old self: If possible, a new investors first purchase(s) should be a house hack using agency (FHA, VA, etc.) money. Buy as many units as you can this way, up to a 4-plex at a time, up to the loan limits. Low down payment, 30-year amortization. Lather, rinse, repeat every two years. Summing Up Are shorter amortizations right for ALL situations? Of course not. But for the vast majority of the BiggerPockets non-expert level community, they are the right choice, and everyone who tells you differently is wrong. Even Dave and Scott. Work with smaller local banks and reap the long-term rewards.
