Tumblr Poll Tournaments & MCYT

So a while ago I made a post expressing my frustration with the way a lot of tumblr poll tournaments seem to exclude mcyt characters- or if they are included, people in the notes are rude about it. The first situation of these- the poll organizer including rules against submitting characters from mcyt- is something I can easily quantify. I've crunched some numbers in order to find out two things:

How common is this phenomenon, really?

Why does this happen in the first place?

A note before I start: I'm not blaming the poll organizers for this, and I don't want anyone to get angry at them for excluding mcyt. At the end of the day, it's up to them to curate what they want their poll to be, and if they don't want to deal with the toxicity that often comes with letting mcyt characters run (or if they just don't like it for whatever reason), that's their decision. Trust me- poll organizers have to put up with a lot of shit already, and I don't want to add to it, regardless of their opinions on mcyt. If any poll organizers recognize their own words in the later part of this overview, they can contact me and I'll remove it. This is also why I have chosen not to identify the blogs from which I took the examples- I mean no harm to any poll organizer. They are a symptom of a much larger problem and they haven't done anything wrong except be a little misinformed at worst.

Excluding mcyt characters from poll tournaments really isn't that big of a deal on its own- though it is frustrating- but it does speak to the larger attitude of the general tumblr population towards mcyt. While not without its flaws, this can be used as a metric to measure the extent of this attitude and maybe get a hint of why it exists.

...Please note, also, that most of these polls date back to around March-June 2023, when poll tournaments were a big thing on Tumblr. Not super outdated, but I still should note that opinions might have changed since then.

Also also, be warned that there are examples below of some organizers being pretty toxic! It's not a whole lot, but if you don't want to expose yourself to that, maybe pass on this post!

With that out of the way, let's get started.

Part One: The Numbers

The first thing I decided to do was figure out a rough percentage of how many poll tournaments have a rule that excludes mcyt characters from being submitted. To get a sample batch of poll blogs, I used one of the blogs that pits the winners of tournaments against each other and checked each blog included in that. This ended up being a more tedious process than I had thought, since there's a lot of variation in the way poll organizers, well, organize. I ended up with 123 blogs sorted into three categories.

The first category included tournaments where a rule for or against mcyt characters wouldn't really make sense, for a variety of reasons. Most commonly, the tournament was between letters of the alphabet or animo acids or government agencies, not fictional characters, so I counted them out. There were also a handful of blogs where the contestants were determined by the organizer, not by nomination at all. Combined, blogs that did not fit my criteria made up 60/123 of my samples.

The second and third categories were the blogs that either had a rule against mcyt characters, or didn't. Most of the blogs I looked through had rules I could find, and some were more thorough about it than others. For my purposes, I counted the blog as a no only if they explicitly had a rule against mcyt characters, or clarified later that they weren't allowed. Most poll blogs didn't mention mcyt at all. (This will become relevant later.)

Of the 63 blogs that fit my criteria, 11 (17.5%) of them had a rule against mcyt characters, while the remaining 52 (82.5%) did not.

To me, this seems like pretty good news! I had honestly expected the percentage of blogs that excluded mcyt to be much higher. This is definitely a good sign! But I wouldn't really jump to assuming that mcyt characters would actually be accepted in all of these blogs. I will explain this in the next part of my research.

Part Two: The Examples

The second thing I wanted to find out with this research was why organizers end up having rules against mcyt in the first place. Is it just the bad reputation the mcyt space has (largely a result of one green man in particular)? Let's look at a few examples of poll rules against mcyt characters. Some of them are from my sample blogs and some of them aren't.

Type 1: Not understanding the difference between real people and characters in mcyt

The majority of the rules against mcyt I saw were of this type, and honestly, it's pretty reasonable. It's a pretty major debate in the mcyt community over whether mcyts' characters are separate enough from their content creators to count as fictional. However, there are a considerable number of mcyt characters who are explicitly stated to be different from their cc in the same way as a character in a movie played by an actor is different from the actor playing them. Excluding all mcyt characters for being 'real people' is just incorrect, though I can kinda understand where the organizers were coming from with this one.

It should also be noted that the vast majority of poll blogs had a rule against submitting real people. There's a possibility that some poll organizers might have lumped mcyt characters as real people even if they didn't specify it explicitly. Therefore, an attempt to actually submit an mcyt character into one of these tournaments might be against the rules based on what the organizer thinks. I have no way to quantify this, which is why I said earlier that the results of my initial test might not be accurate.

Type 2: 'Problematic fandom' (toxicity warning for some of these)

This type of rule is usually broader than just mcyt, but lumps it in with other fandoms known for being associated with bigotry (often hp, which is... yeah i'm definitely not going to argue in favor of harry potter but yikes. really? we're as bad as terfy potter? really.) At least one of them let dsmp characters in with the exception of dream, which is a lot fairer than... some of the others.

If we want to give the organizers benefit of the doubt here, we can say that these rules are made to keep the poll less toxic than it would be otherwise... but to be perfectly honest, some of these might be more about that phenomenon of purity culture that has had a habit of popping up in fandom spaces since forever. That's a whole other conversation I'm not ready to have now, but it comes as no surprise to me that mcyt has become a little taboo in some places (likely to a large extent because of dream and all the drama he's generated). There's also no telling whether the poll organizers in these cases even know that there are other smps besides dsmp... but that's besides the point, since there are other dsmp characters that aren't associated with dream at all. Excluding them reveals a misconception about the mcyt genre anyway. And of course, I think we can all agree that some of these are just pretty rude.

Which brings us to our conclusion.

I feel like a lot of the toxicity towards mcyt as a genre and mcyt characters boils down to people either not really understanding what mcyt is (i.e. mcyt -> minecraft youtubers -> real people) or hearing stuff about dream and assuming the entire mcyt space is reflective of that. Of course, it's a frustrating issue that some people think this way. I think it's nice to be reminded, though, that this sort of thing isn't very widespread. Alongside the bad examples, I saw a lot of organizers confronting their preconceived notions: one organizer let in an mcyt character after admitting their 'unfamiliarity with the source material', another allowed mcyt characters 'on the condition that you can explain how they are a separate character' and a few others fiercely defended mcyt characters against toxicity in their polls. Every day we grow as a community and we can't let a few people with misguided notions of what we are keep us down. Keep watching, keep creating, and as Zedaph once said, It's okay to be silly!

i am an extremely new fan, and i can admit that i dont know much about eichi and therefore i cant give an unbiased opinion on him at this point!!

i see your points i see all of them and. you are right. his desperation led him to do wrongs during war era, and he regrets it. i understand this completely, and i agree that he shouldnt be portayed as the only villain because of what his desperation did to him.

however, based on the stories ive read so far in !!, he is...unnecessarily cruel. i get that he'll do whatever it takes to reach his vision of the idol industry, but the way he phrases his conversations with the others does NOT paint him in a good light. this might be because the game is making him look like the bad guy though tbh. he thinks alkaloid is, quote, a box of mudballs, and says this directly to their faces. now, this might just be tough love, but..to say that to tatsumi, who just got out of the hospital? whom he bonded with over their health issues? it just feels...idk.

that might also play into your point about him not realizing that people want to be his friends, and seeing them as business partners tho!

adding onto that, idk the full story for this, but i was informed that tsumugi didnt want to be paid/contracted and like, begged him to be friends? idk about that i might be completely wrong!! it also might not be tsumugi actually i was told this a while ago

In regards to Alkaloid, I must confess, I'm having a hard time going through the main story cuz I just.....find certain characters and dynamics annoying and/or they just dont interest me much. So i am probably lacking the full depth of what eichi has said to them but i do have two posts about my view on him and alkaloid together (well, more from a meta perspective i suppose). But then again, eichi has this tendency to make other characters want to hate him out of a deep rooted belief that he doesn't actually deserve love, even after his "happy ending", there will always be something bigger to achieve and more sins to atone for.

I'm not necessarily arguing he's not flawed (although i am arguing he's just human, not good or bad, or rather both, i think that's one of the core messages of enstars too.) He's too self aware and pragmatic for his own good. Even he himself says in Sanctuary that he's falling back to how he used to be in the war to reach his ideals.

So i guess what i'm saying is not that you must forgive all his actions cuz he never did anything wrong etcetc but more my plea for people to read his stories and see why he's the way that he is. Because i just cannot stand to watch another tiktok full of misinformation. I could, and i probably have in the past, gone on a rant about how people blame eichi alone for the war completely disregarding keito and akatsuki's crucial roles in taking down kanata. Meanwhile my guy Eichi was in the hospital that whole time. But anyway, this was besides the point. Or maybe not. Moving on,

As for Tsumugi, the story you're referencing is Element. It was animated in the show as well, but i do recommend reading it. And then, connected to it, Daydream. Oh my god. Eichi's Daydream Monologue...

The thingbwith Tsumugi is that he just started believing in Eichi's ideals to the point where the war fully would not have succeeded without him. He wanted to be Eichi's friend and to bring him happiness so he joined old Fine, he just thought the contract was a formality. I'm not sure on the "begged to be friends" part, i think that phrasing is a bit extreme, but you gotta remember Eichi was generally distrustful that people like him beyond his wealth. And with a family like Tsumugi's, divorced parents, estranged brother, a mother that keeps falling prey to scams and losing their savings, Eichi thought Tsumugi's motive for wanting to get close was to obtain enough money to cut ties with his mom. Oh. Another thing, i can reblog some story screenshots afterwards, but Eichi does project a lot of his issues onto others. Not the best coping mechanism, clearly.

I do see why Eichi isn't for everyone. I would rather you read his stories and then decide you don't agree with his ways than someone liking him only for fluff (aka only the sweet scenes with wataru) and ignoring the rest of his character. Honestly my answer might make you hate him even more, but i hope out of spite you will read Ep:Link at least. Maybe Sanctuary, but definitely do Not start with that, it needs 7 years of stories as context. Black Tea, Milky Way, Jingle Bells and Tempest should also be good beginner's guide to Eichi stories at the top of my head.

I mean, I get it… if Loki should fall in love who better than his parallel. She’s different enough from him to have it not be too weird I guess, but it’s still a variant version of him. And it seems a little too forced. Like sure a crush maybe, but don’t you dare say love when they’ve only known each other for like a couple days.

My mind is melting. I’m so glad I waited to watch this in the morning instead of at night so I could appreciate it in all its glory.

It had shown up on an ad that caught zens eye in the moonlight. At the time mc had only laughed. “Oh no. No no no no” zen grabbed his phone as he stood up already dialing mc. It took two seconds for him to realize she had left her phone at his house. “Plan b” he decided shoving the ring into his pocket as he ran down his street. Meanwhile mc was finally calming down, sitting at a park bench. “Hey pretty lady you'd look better if you'd smile!” A passing man commented, mc showed him her favorite finger before continuing to try and calm down. It was hard to breath here, too many people, too much noise, too big of a headache. A rough hand grabbed her chin and tilted her to look up at his putrid smelling face. “Now don't be like that doll. I can turn that sad little face upside down. He gestured to his crotch a kinky expression on his twisted face. Mc took a deep breath and stopped resisting the mans hand on her chin nodding eagerly. She watched his yellow teeth peek through his lips before bringing her knee up into his crotch and shoving the now groaning man back as she took off running. “$&@%!” The man cursed at her. Mc didn't respond she only ran, down the road around a corner into an alleyway that seemed to have less people. Probably due to the smell of shit. “Hey!” A man grabbed her arm and she screamed briefly as the man placed a hand over her mouth. Much younger than the previous man but his grip made her nervous. “That was my dad! What the $&@% is wrong with you!?” Mc tried to pull away from him but he only tightened his grip. “LET GO OF ME” she screamed kicking at him. Zen ran towards the park looking desperately. A man was slowly standing up using a park bench for assistance. “I'll get that little @&$%” he groaned. “Stupid brunettes all the same. Cry then kick.” Zen tensed and glared at that man. “Excuse me sir” his politeness was the only nice thing about his demeanor. “Which direction did this ‘brunette’ go?” “Down that way” the man pointed shrugging. “I wouldn't bother. By the time My boy is done with her she won't be doing much.” Zen punched him and left the unconscious man on the bench as he took off in the direction he had pointed. Mc struggled against the ropes as The man shoved her in the back of the van and shut the door her vision was already hazy. “HEY” someone shouted and the man looked over at the towering figure of zen running towards him. “Crap” the dude ran for the front of the van only for zen to grab him and throw him to the concrete. The man pulled his gun shaking and zen kicked it to the side his red eyes glaring holes through this mans head. He took off his belt and tied the mans arms behind his back. At first he tried to resist, then zen slammed his face into the concrete and he stopped. Zen quickly opened the back of the van where mc was shaking her head and blinking. She looked at zen but her eyes were glazed over. Zen gently pulled her out of the van and untied her. MC stared at her untied hands before bursting into tears. Zen blinked surprised. “N-no it's okay babe I got you. You're safe.” He reassured her sitting down next to her. “The police are coming to get this guy and then we're gonna go home. I promise babe” “I-I-” she sobbed clinging to his neck. “F-fans” She hiccuped “Shhhh. It's okay. I was a jerk and I was wrong I'm so sorry- mc?” Her head lolled and she swayed to the side. Zen jumped in and caught her right before she hit the ground. “Oh man.” He hung his head “this is all my fault. Just hang on okay?” The sirens in the distance calmed him down but he just sat there holding her upright. Jaehee- “If you can't make yourself helpful then why are you even here!?” Jaehee snapped. This argument had been going on for a while. “Because I love you!” Mc clenched her fists her eyes shut tight. She has never been more glad the shop was closed. “I am gay and oh my lord do I love you.” MC took a deep breath before continuing “I love the way you focus on what makes you interested even if it's bad for your health, I love your stubborn pride, I love that you quit on jumin, I love that you're happy with who you are now! But damn it jaehee I'm not you! I don't have your work ethic. I certainly can't keep up with your expectations. I'm trying though, I'm trying so hard. I learned to cook for this, I'm talking to way more people that I normally would-” Jaehee pulled her into a kiss and for a moment everything was perfect. Saeran- “No” “Saeran I know you're not a people person but-” “NO YOU DONT!!” Saeran snapped and mc flinched back. Seven crunched down hard on his back of chips. Saeran was normally quiet and reserved. “I DONT WANT TO. IM NOT YOUR PUPPET” MC’s lip started shaking “YOU SHOULDNT KEEP PUSHING ME AROUND-” mc turned grabbing her purse and walked out the door. “Oh great” seven turned to his brother “look what you did now. you made her cry.” Saeran blinked “You're not worried?” “Nah. She's right outside. Doesn't know Arabic though so she locked herself out” “Serves her right” saeran muttered. “You aren't going to apologize?” “For what?!” Saeran demanded incredulous. “I didn't do anything!” “She was only trying to help. If you would have told her nicely that you were uncomfortable she would have backed off sooner.” Seven sighed. “She loves you. Can't imagine why after hearing that.” Saeran paused and seven studied him before turning back to his computer. On the surveillance screen mc was on the deck sobbing harshly. Saeran sighed before reaching into the freezer and pulling out two ice cream cones. Seven grinned as Saeran walked outside. “Hey.” Mc yelled and quickly tried to wipe her tears away. “I'm sorry” Saeran sat down next to her handing her the ice cream cone. “No. You were right” mc cleaned up her face before accepting the cone. “I should have listened better.” “And I should have been nicer. Let's just agree that we both suck and should try again.” MC chuckled and nodded. Saeran huffed and stood up. “Okay open up” Saeran said the password in Arabic. “Wrong password” the gate spoke back. “What the-” Saeran frowned and said the password louder. “Wrong password. Please make out to get another chance.” “What- LUCIEL!” Saeran blushed annoyed. Mc giggled and pulled Saeran into a kiss before turning to the gate and repeated the password. “Did you use tongue?” “Yes” Mc replied in Arabic holding Saerans hand as the gate lock clicked and opened up. “When did you learn Arabic!?” Seven demanded incredulous, standing at the door “I've been living with you for almost a year. You really think I'd take the chance of being locked out!? V- I don't know his character well enough to write a good argument. (Maybe try again after his route is released through iPhones.)
