Capitalism has increasingly lost the competitive character that shaped its ascendence. Today, its giants often collude even as they fight among themselves—like the daimyo in medieval Japan. What competition remains comes from other giants rather than from plucky upstarts. Microsoft now controls 90 percent of all operating system software. Three tech firms now account for two-thirds of all online advertizing revenues, which now represent the vast majority of all ad sales. Once paragons of entrepreneurial vigor, these firms have morphed into exemplars of “tollbooth capitalism,” and receive revenues on transactions that far exceed anything they lose in failed ventures and acquisitions. Finance, too, has become markedly more concentrated, with the number of banks in the US down a full third since 2000 while Europe experiences a slower, but similar consolidation. Global investing is now dominated by a handful of companies, the five largest of which control over 45 percent of all assets in the US compared to under 30 percent 20 years ago. The five largest investment banks control roughly one-third of investment funds; the top 10 control an absolute majority. For the most part, these firms hated Donald Trump. This partly owed to understandable revulsion at his character, but it was also due to his hostility to China, his opposition to the cheap labor provided by immigration, and his support for efforts to break up big tech firms. They therefore united to make massive contributions to electoral efforts to remove him, a move later celebrated in Time magazine.

More of my nation’s soldiers die from suicide than combat. We tried to waste entire peoples in Vietnam and Afghanistan. These two facts are plenty of proof that America’s soul has been thoroughly and brutally mutilated.

It’s not going to get better until we start paying attention to history- actual, painful, honest history- not the patriotic propaganda that makes it into our textbooks. Soul wounds are even harder to treat than shit policy, and the longer they’re ignored, the more enmeshed and debilitating they become.

The Batman is a perfect example for me to use when I say thst as much as I too am exhausted and sick of the oversaturation of superhero movies, I still think there’s room to be creative with them and it’s annoying how 99% of them suck.

Even if you make a "grounded” superhero film, you can keep it elevated stylistically! You can have panache or riff off the comics visually without being silly or childish. This is why I've been complaining about the MCU for years particularly when we were dealing with the Russos taking over everything and making everything hideously flat. (This is also why I think that regardless of what you think of Snyder, at least he has a vision unlike them.) 

And I’m obsessed with how patient and confident the film was with unspooling the story. It didn't rush, a rarity in this era of movies, really, at least when it comes to tentpole films.There were no random, tired, annoying quick cuts to humor either though there were moments of levity. At the same time, it wasn't grimdark as much as it was a dark, serious tale! That term gets thrown around so easily and it's not always applicable. And it's not some dreadfully nihilistic film hiding behind a veneer of a “societal message” that's superficial and rings hollow. Compare this to J*k*r which I loathe for so many reasons lmao, not just because of its script but because TP is not a good director and it shows. He wanted to make a Taxi Driver so bad, but he couldn’t do anything besides uncreatively copying and pasting. 

ANYWAY. FLKSAJFKSJFA I want to rewatch The Batman, I wish I saw it in theaters, and it makes me really, really sad that I didn’t because this is something you should see on a big screen, you know? I’ll just go and find whatever videos I can about the movie while I wait for a sequel since I spent the entire night reading up on it.
