I was thinking about what different Sonic characters' names could be in sign a couple of months ago, since so many people headcanon Sonic knowing sign language, and I ended up making animations for a few!! Here's what I came up with for Sonic!! :D

Sonic's head moves as he signs, spines bouncing up and down and head tilting to the left. While he’s signing, he mouths his name, the first syllable ‘So’ being mouthed during the ‘fast’ sign, and the second syllable ‘nic’ being mouthed during the ‘hedgehog’ sign.

On the right side of the video, next to Sonic’s head, is the artist’s signature—the silhouette of a bongo with the letters BD written inside.

"The Darkness Within" PART 1 (Sonic X - Dark Sonic)

(Sonic's POV)

The faint sound of his friends' laughter and voices echoed in Sonic's ears even as he stood at the very edge of the Typhoon, a frown twisted across his face as he stared unseeing at the stars.

He hadn't felt such shame in a long time.

Normally, he did whatever he pleased without a care of what anyone thought. He did what he believed was right whether it was perceived that way or not.

So it was safe to say that the events of the attempted rescue of Chris and Cosmo had left him a little . . . shaken.

He couldn't believe the way he'd lost control.

Never before had he felt so intensely angry. Sure, he'd had a right to, his friends were hurt and the Metarex creep was threatening to experiment on them if he refused to let them do the same to him. Sure, he'd felt a little off since he'd discovered the hoards upon hoards of fake chaos emeralds.

And then— what?! He hadn't been able to think straight. His vision had nearly turned red with how furious he'd been. All he could feel was white-hot anger. He remembered hearing himself laugh like some kind of psychopath. He remembered tearing into the Silver and Gold Metarex that were meant to test him, he remembered slicing them to bits at lightspeed and feeling not an ounce of remorse as their armor exploded and they were killed.

And the next thing he'd known, Eggman of all people was scolding him and telling him to calm down.

It had taken him a hot minute to relax. Hearing that Shadow had rescued his friends while he'd been . . . like that, had startled him in the worst way.

Now they were all back, safe and sound. Cosmo and Chris were alright. Everyone on the other side of the ship was celebrating, believing the day was a victory.

In a way, he supposed, they were right.

But Sonic could not relax. He couldn't bring himself to join them, he couldn't even bring himself to smile as he stood alone on the opposite side of the ship, staring at nothing and thinking of everything.

His mind wouldn't shut up, and he didn't have enough space to run on the Typhoon. He was stuck.

What if it happens again?

It won't. I won't let it.

I don't know that, I had no idea this morning that it would happen today.

Now that I know, I'll make sure it never happens again.

Today was just proof that I don't have it as together as I thought I did.

They don't know. No one else here knows. No one knows but Eggman.

Would they be scared if they knew? If they SAW me like that?

Don't worry about it. Just keep going. Don't look back. I never look back.

But usually that doesn't have anything to do with something I did wrong.

Do I apologize somehow? Should I leave? Take some time to myself? How much time? They need me to help them fight the Metarex.

I can't leave, but I sure want to.

I just wish—

"Hey, Sonic! You doing okay?"

He jerked his head around to see Tails slowly approaching his perch, blue eyes wide and curious. Glimmering with just a hint of concern.

Sonic sat down in place and nodded curtly, his voice stuck in his throat. He'd been talking a lot more nowadays than he used to, trying to get better at communicating with people and making friends, but some days it was still hard.

Apparently today was one of those days.

And Tails could see right through him.

His face fell. "Something happened, didn't it?"

Sonic avoided his eyes, choosing instead to stare intensely at the floor in front of him as if it was a work of art.

Slowly, cautiously, Tails moved closer and sat a couple feet away. Sonic could still feel his little brother's eyes on him, but he refused to make eye contact. He wasn't sure he'd be able to handle it.

"Did you get hurt . . . ?" Tails sounded doubtful yet worried.

Sonic shook his head.

"Did the Metarex say something that bothered you?"

Another wordless head shake.

Tails didn't ask anything else for about a minute, choosing instead to let them both sit in thoughtful silence and allow Sonic to try and pull himself together.

I can't tell him. There's no way.

I can't tell him . . . all of it.

Sonic swallowed, lifting his chin and finally daring to meet Tails's questioning eyes. He opened his mouth, but could not bring himself to make a sound.

Tails bit his lip, then lifted his hands and signed, "I'm here."

Sonic nodded with a small, grateful smile, then, after a hesitation, signed back, "Something happened. I did something."

Tails tilted his head slightly, and even though he could've just spoken his response, he continued signing. "What did you do?"

There was no fear or aggression in his hand movements or expression. Just genuine, gentle curiosity.

Sonic closed his eyes for a moment, that awful feeling of shame washing over him all over again. "Something bad. I caused harm. I didn't mean to."

Tails smiled gently. "You didn't mean to. You didn't harm our friends, right?"

Sonic exhaled silently through his nose. "No. I hurt the bad guys." He didn't think there was a sign for "Metarex," but if there was, he didn't know it.

A flicker of confusion appeared in his little brother's eyes. "You stop the bad guys all the time."

He fidgeted uncomfortably, then signed, "It was different. Can't explain. I was wrong."

Tails paused for a long moment after those shaky signs from Sonic, looking thoughtfully at the sky.

"It's okay," he signed back eventually. "I know your heart is in the right place. Whatever you did, you wouldn't be feeling so bad if it wasn't in the right place."

Sonic blinked. He fidgeted a little more, then quickly signed, "Thank you."

The fox kit smiled and nodded. "You're welcome. I'm here for you." Then, without waiting for a response, he stood up and extended a hand out to Sonic.

Sonic initially thought Tails was going to bring him back to the group, but then remembered that his brother knew him better than that. So he accepted the little hand reaching for him and stood as well, then followed the fox kit downstairs inside the ship.

Tails brought him to his bedroom on the ship, gestured for him to wait there, then left. For a few minutes, Sonic sat alone, fingering the cool sheets and looking around the room, anything to avoid thinking too much again.

After those few minutes, Tails returned with a steaming mug of tea, which he carefully handed to Sonic. "Take your time," he signed, smiling sweetly. "This will help you sleep."

Sonic managed a small, regretful smile. "Thank you," he signed again.

Tails nodded, patted his hands in reassurance, and left the room.

Sonic paused for a long moment, then sat back on his bed and sipped his tea. He recognized the flavor as the same kind Tails himself used on bad nights, the ones with nightmares and thunderstorms.

He took a deep breath. Over the course of the next hour, he finished his tea over a good book. He listened to his friends' voices wind down outside on the deck.

And eventually, he slept.

I decided that starting off with the grimdark stuff was too bold.

So here's some exposition and worldbuilding for Pixel City.

Transcript:

Video game game characters are just like us. They use public transportation.

Sign Language TL: Heyy (Misread as Love-ya!) wanna grab a slice (of pizza) later? Exciting! But Love yourself first! (she's aroace)

They go shopping occasionally.

Mario! Please don't stand in the shopping cart!

Hmm, what fruit to get for the party? Lotta good choices, pthhpth.

They even try out games and sports. Even dangerous ones.

THIS CLUB IS SO OFF THE CHAIN!!!!!

Hey there, Undyne, wanna play Chaosvolley? You know I can't do it alone, Pescita.

Video game Characters aren't perfect, and they will argue.

Shimea, we're late to biology. I'll make the first incision on the dead frog.

Took a while, but I made this!! info below the cut

The inkling girl in the first panel is Carlotta Marisa Ikaraggi, and she's a prodigal sign interpreter for the Squid sisters. And her surname sounds like Ikarrage, or "fried squid" in Japanese, which is what Calamari is. She's from splatsville and her parents come from Cephaloflorence, Inktaly.

The gal next to her is from the Hoenn region. She's an ace trainer named Kasumi Dominica Hamasaki-Brooks. She's deaf in one ear and wants to be a water type gym leader.

Also in the first panel is the Sniper from Team Fortress 2. After finding out he NEVER buys his own shirts, I figured he'd be the kind of person to only enter a contest or competition if the grand prize is a free T-shirt. So yeah, with the transferable skills, Mr. Mundy became the Bee photography champ of 1964. Also he's wondering how Waddle Doo is listening to music.

Knuckles is autistic in my HC, and while he (much like Eggman) is a feminist, he doesn't like to read long paragraphs. So I decided he would read a book of Alison Bedschel Cartoons.

In the second panel, we see two sims characters, one of which is an oc. Hali'a el-Ghani is Hawaiian/Senegalese, and likes floral hijabs. To her right is Savannah Price, but I decided to give her a better looking hairstyle (namely box braids in a ponytail with some edges).

Also Mario and Luigi and Bob the Cat.

The mannequins are of Princess Dragonfruit (my idea of what Wa-Peach is like, somewhat like Bowsette, and she's cringefail villain with a Dr.Doofenshmirtz level of incompetence and her girlfriend is Princess Chammomile, who's pretty much WaDaisy and she sleeps often and has a mellow but lazy stoner-ish vibe) and some random guy.

The next panel shows a club of some sort. Rouge the bat wants to play a game of Chaosvolley with Undyne.

I decided that rouge the bat WOULD wear the jewelry she steals, and frequently lies about where she got it. Also I can't draw anyone playing pool to save my life. So I made up a dangerous "Party sport" instead.

The shirt Undyne is wearing is based off of a hat from @shirtsthatgohard

Bronto Burt is in the corner dancing.

The sonic character in the BG is an oc named Guava the Fennec. She's a green fox with pink eyes and likes fruit smoothies

The foreground shows a Hylian named Shimea who's family runs a tea house inn oot castle town. The Toad next to her is Enokiko Toad, a reserved and intelligent gal who's also quite blunt and also very autistic.

Note that none of the characters on this page who wear school uniforms wear the exact same uniform. That's because Principal Isabelle Shizue (yes from animal crossing) forgot to have a uniform made for Lawson High (named after Jerry Lawson, who pretty much invented the video game console) so Isabelle just put (wear a school uniform.

In reality, it's because I have ADHD and I don't want to draw the same uniform multiple times.

What it was like for Eggman dealing with the villains in Sonic Forces (I know that they're not real, but I thought this would be funny.)

*Eggman pulls into a McDonald's drive thru with Zavok, Orbot, Cubot, Metal Sonic, Infinite, Chaos, and Shadow in the car with him.*

Infinite: "Eggman I'm not really much of a fast food eater."

Eggman: "Oh yeah? You know what I'm thinking, Infinite? I'm thinking shut up and get a salad."

Chaos: *Signs 'I want some Mcnuggets.'*

Eggman: "We'll get to you, chaos."

Cubot: "I want a hamburger, no, a cheeseburger. I want a hot dog, I want a milkshake-"

Shadow: *Hits Cubot.* "You'll get nothing and like it!"

Eggman: "Uh, hello?"

McDonald's employee: "Welcome to McDonald's, may I take your order?"

Eggman: "Yeah, we're gonna take two McChicken sandwiches and a diet Coke and. Uh Zavok, what do you want?"

Zavok: "A Mcdlt."

Eggman: "No, I already told you they don't make those anymore."

Zavok: "You know sometimes it's a regional thing, you could ask."

Eggman: "No McDonald's anywhere makes a Mcdlt anymore."

Orbot: "Can I get a Shamrock Shake if they have any of those?"

Eggman: "It's September!"

Metal Sonic: "Boss, can we take this mask off of Infinite now? It's giving everyone the creeps."

Infinite: "Try it and die, scrap heap!"

Eggman: "No son, I already tried. I didn't even tell him to put that on!"

Zovok: "I'm just saying, they have all the ingredients for a Mcdlt-"

*The car behind them honks at Eggman.*

Eggman: "THERE'S A LOT OF US HERE, OKAY?! IT'S A BIG ORDER!"

Shadow: "What time do they stop serving breakfast?"

Eggman: "It's three o'clock!"

Shadow: "Some of them serve breakfast all day "

Eggman: "NONE OF THEM SERVE BREAKFAST ALL DAY!!"

Zavok: "Do they have beer?"

Sonic the Hedgehog Headcanon #1

Originally, Sonic was a mute. Whether it be from a traumatic experience, or he just never really learned out to talk.

Or, Sonic never knew how to speak English, so didn’t bother speaking. As such, when he did learn to speak, he did have a weird accent no could place.

When Tails met Sonic, he had trouble communicating with the hedgehog. Especially, since Sonic only used hand gestures and signals. Sonic never saw being quiet as a problem since he never communicated with people except for, you know, Eggman. (He only ever talked to Amy at the time through letters).

Tails was the one to suggest that Sonic learned sign language. Whenever they weren’t on an adventure, they were hunkering down in a library, trying to teach each other. (Sonic only agreed because he knew it would make Tails happy).

Or, Sonic already knew sign language, and he taught Tails. Thankfully, Tails learned it pretty fast.

Eggman was already fluent in sign language. (In fact, he might’ve been the one to teach Sonic).

Sonic secretly learned several cuss words in sign language, and he only uses them on Eggman. (Eggman is not pleased by this).

Whenever Sonic’s stressed or overexcited, he tends to sign really fast, and it makes it hard for Tails to understand him.

On another note, whenever Sonic’s upset, he refuses to sign, and he may only give vague gestures.

When Sonic finally starts speaking, he and Tails only use sign language in battle as a way to communicate with each other. Sometimes, whenever he’s upset or stressed, he stops talking, and he will only use sign language to speak.

Amy knows sign language, although it is not as advanced as Tails’ knowledge. She made Tails teach her when they were younger.

Knuckles knows a handful of sign language, and he’s bad at it. He can understand it, but he’s terrible at signing. (Maybe because of his gloves?) Unsurprisingly, his favorite word to sign to Sonic, is “idiot.”

i think classic sonic/sonic as a kid had no concept of language due to basically growing up alone on christmas island, meeting tails meant there was a huge language barrier between the 2 but sonic quickly picked up bare basics of the language

So for the past few weeks me and my friend have been going NUTS (in a good way) reading @skimmingmilk 's fanfics 🤩 I love them all, but I'm especially fascinated by "Chart A Course to Second Chances." For one, it feels canon, because of how many references to the canon there are and everyone is totally in character. There's only three chapters out now but I'm super hyped for more!!

Anyway, post of the post is that even though it was traumatizing (spoiler alert...?) I made fanart of a heartbreaking scene in the end of chapter one. Because while it was unexpected and horribly tragic, it was also SUPER well written (the whole thing is but still)

So here it is 🥹🥺😭

(I know he actually dug a lot deeper than that but for the sake of the pic- 😁😂😅 and also I'm not all that great at drawing fire sorry 😅)

And when I sent it to one of my group chats, one of my other friends who's not in the fandom was like "WHAT IS THIS ANGST?? I'm not even in this fandom but that's so sad!!" 😂😅

Anyway so yeah, I see traumatizing stuff, I go "that's a lot of damage, how about some more" and here we are 🤣

I'm also actually writing a fanfic .... based almost entirely on the events of previously mentioned fanfic 🤣🤣 but that's not finished yet lol

Neat Lore Bits from 'The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog'

I just wanted to make a little list of everything I come across as I play through this little April Fool's Day game, because it's super cute and so much fun.

— Tails always carries Sparkle Gelatin as a snack whenever he travels. It's "a sparkly jelly that can melt any jaded heart."

— Sonic is world renowned, but not necessarily recognizable by the average person, even if the average person knows who he is and what he did.

— Amy is a huge fan of true crime podcasts.

— Once when Tails was at the grocery store, he slipped on some spilled juice because there wasn't a wet floor sign. Sonic caught him . . . but then also slipped on the juice because he was running too fast, and they both crashed into an elderly shopper's cart.

— Not lore per se, but both the detective and the journalist can't be the murderer or victim of the murder mystery, and got to hang out together for the hour before the game starts. Amy picked Tails to be the detective to her journalist, meaning she wanted to spend that time with him. Awww, Sunset Squad 4 Life 💖🧡

— Blaze prefers the birthday cake in Sonic's dimension to the cake in her own.

— Amy has multiple Piko Piko Hammers for different uses. She carries a lighter one when she thinks she won't need one for the day.

— Shadow is familiar with Super Monkey Ball, but can't get a very high score on it. Also, he signs high score boards as ULTIM (for Ultimate Life Form)

— Knuckles is not used to receiving compliments; they make him blush.

— Knuckles is a sore loser and breaks game cabinets when he can't get the highest score.

— Omochao is wanted for medical malpractice.

— Eggman has written a combined autobiography and recipe book.

— Tails claims to have never played in casinos and to not know how to play card games despite stating that he is banned from casinos for counting cards in Sonic Heroes. Either Sega has decided to retcon Tails' gambling habits, or Tails doesn't like to share his gambling habits with strangers.

— Amy's favorite band is Hot Honey, and Hot Honey band member Jeremy Bee is her current favorite musician.

— Shadow is not good with computers.

— Espio is fluent in 17 languages.
