So I decided to use up all my old carrot seed this year. The most recent packet is from 2016 which didn't seem so old until I did the math. My oldest packets were from 2004 and so probably won't do anything but add a teeny bit of organic matter given that they're TWENTY YEARS OLD, but why not? I'll get all new seed next year if I need it; until then I'm going to vastly overseed the rows and hope for the best.
I also decided to try the cornstarch slurry method for germinating carrot seed. It's supposed to help keep the seed moist during the longish germination period. It worked really well for getting the seed fairly evenly spaced too.
Anyway the recipe is 2 cups water plus 4 Tbsp cornstarch (for one whole packet of seed), bring to a simmer until thickened, then let cool all the way to room temp. It will thicken up more as it cools.
Tumblr media
Pour into a ziplock baggie (I used quart size), add your seeds, zip close and slosh around to evenly suspend the seeds. (I added 3-4 packets of old seeds, so mine will look seedier than normal)
Tumblr media
Then snip a tiny bit off of one of the corners (about 2-3x bigger than the seeds) and use it like a pastry bag to draw a line of seed jelly down your row. I recommend doing this in a shallow groove to both contain the jelly as well as allowing you to place a board or something on top (for those of us with hungry wildlife) until germination starts.

This really went so smoothly that I'm going to look up what other surface-sown seed this might be good for.

The life support system.
Greenhouses are nice and all, but not so great for germination when it’s overcast for three days and temps are in the 50s.
Some of these seeds prefer 95 F temps, but sorry guys, these heating pads are only getting to 82 F.
Still better than the 59 F out in the greenhouse.
This is very temporary. If the sun ever appears again, I’m pulling the plug on them.
And I want my sewing table back.

Today I planted flax (for fiber!), pawpaws, and two Sun Sugar tomatoes. I even put cages on the tomatoes right away; I am very On Top of It.
I had way more pawpaw seeds than I'd realized, so there's like 10 in each of those pots, and I'll have to cull them down later. I also took 15-20 of them down in the woods & threw them around down near the creek.

indoor sprouts are sprouting! Collards are off to a roaring start, and the first tomato just popped up in the last 45 minutes.

Spring is coming! People who garden (no matter how big or little, whether you have a big farm or apartment windowsill potted plants), what are you planting??
We're doing tomatoes, zucchini, rainbow carrots, radishes, pumpkins, basil, and mint. Also, some sunflowers, marigolds, daisies, and roses, a crepe myrtle, and a crabapple. :)
Next year, we're hoping to do mini orange raspberries, and start our Ozark chestnut and pawpaw trees.

Feeling incredibly crappy so motivating myself to start planting by at least buying a bunch of cool seeds.
I’m not in a huge hurry because spring is so late in Scotland we can still have frosts in May. I’ll be everything planting inside first and quite a few things will probably stay mostly inside permanently.
The chilli kit was from a pal who got it for Christmas and doesn’t think she’ll get the motivation together. If they grow well I’m going to give her some of the plants back once they’re growing well because they’re lovely to have around the house.

Monday mid-morning wrap up:
1. Our fire maple looks like a Tribble. H and I want to put eyes on it, just to help confirm to the neighbours we are weird. I mean, they planted a f'ing pine tree in western Washington, so I don't think we are the weird ones here. #pinetreesareaplague #IYKYN
2. Raised beds are built. Planted? Not my department. But im sure I'll be hauling bags of dirt soon.
3. I'm apparently going through an Imelda Marcos phase because these Cons just hit hard in the funk department. Not shown: a royal blue pair that is so my current mood.
4. 1st salmonberry... bland? Kinda. But still a gift from the great beyond.
5. Henry is still a lunabug. And I'm still a mess. We are going grocery shopping and to the hardware store today to give H some quiet time.
6. Apparently environment Canada doesn't classify larger hail as ping pong sized but the size of a 'loonie' coin. And I'm wondering if they use other great comparisons for weather events... like, is there a beaver lodge comparison to snow drifts?
7. I got banned from Twitter for 12 hours because apparently Sean Hannity's people don't like it when you say that you can't be the NRA's whore and not catch a social disease. And just to be clear: I have nothing against sex workers, and believe that it should be safe and legal. I don't like hypocrites, however, and Sean Hannity's actions speak loud and clear for what he is...
Anyhow, enough of my ranting. Buggy and I are off to the hardware store and the grocery store. I'm going to try and do homework again today because my brain was just scrambled last night... I worry this is a post-covid problem. It's like a fog rolls in and things don't 'add up', if that makes sense.
Much love y'all: it's bound to be another crazy week. Thank for being you, and trust me when I say that you are all inspiring.

I managed to complete this project without making my shoulder any worse! Twelve nice, healthy-looking asparagus roots from "Johnny's Select Seeds," the purple variety.
Tumblr media
Now I just need to figure out what to do with the extra soil in the wheelbarrow. I have to wait until the asparagus is up to replace it in the bed. Bare-root asparagus must be planted fairly deep, but it can't sprout through 8 inches of soil; you have to plant it with just a little soil covering the roots and then add more as it grows.
Digging all those vines out was a chore.
Quite a few of the ones I planted in a different bed last year are poking up, now! I HOPE they don't get frost-killed. I should fertilize them. Hmm.

Planting Okra Starters in a No-Dig Garden

I have been gardening without tilling or digging for about three years now. I do dig, to plant starters, but I haven’t turned over any of my garden beds for awhile now. This morning, I planted all the okra starters that I had growing in the former shallow end of the pool. I put them in the spot where I grew tomatoes last year. It was covered with comfrey and weeds. I cut back the comfrey (which…

Garden log 5/22/23
Finished planting the tomatoes (Costoluto) and basil, some in the same rows. Also cilantro. Still need to get small parsleys in, & plant remaining swap plants (borage, swamp sunflower, other flowers).
Beans looking good. White field peas least vigorous/worst germination rate. Wonder why.
