Souvenir jackets appeared in post WWII Asia as soldiers would have the places they served and various slogans mixed with Asian imagery embroidered onto reused parachute silk jackets to take home as "souvenirs". This tradition continued in the post war eras of other Asian conflicts like the Korean War. Although thankful for the help, the military occupation of S Korea came with downsides, including inheriting a comfort woman scheme from the Japanese occupation. It's East meets West, Traditional meets Modern, Joseon dynasty hair pins and Hanboks meets American G.I., but there's history in these jackets born from the ashes of conflict and complex feels of all kinds.

I’ve made this post because I’ve got some anonymous questions regarding this Yu Yu Hakusho jacket. It’s a embroidery reversible sukajan with a design based on the Dark Tournament edition: Hiei with the jagan opened releasing his dragon during the fight against Bui & Kurama summoning the Ojigi Plant against Karasu.

I know it’s pricey, but the quality of their products are amazing. It’s a jacket that if you take good care of, you’ll keep it for your entire life. This collab is limited, so the jackets may be sold out soon!

Americans faced two transformational issues in the 1960’s, The Civil Rights Movement & the Vietnam War. This personalised tour jacket expresses the owner’s dedication to the Black Power movement & his pride in service to his country. The clenched fist embroidered on the rear of the jacket shows a bracelet on the wrist. This was the kind of bracelet soldiers commonly made from spare boot laces. It was a symbol of the Mau Mau, a Black Nationalist organization of soldiers in Vietnam. The Mau Mau took their name from a revolutionary group opposed to British colonial rule in Kenya during the 1950s, the Kenya Land and Freedom Army (KLFA). Soldiers often had custom uniform & souvenir jackets made by various tailor shops in Thailand & Okinawa, a Japanese island nearly 1,800 miles north of Saigon. Japan was where the tradition of the jackets called ‘Sukajan’ originated. They were manufactured & purchased by troops as souvenirs during World War 2 & then later during the Korean War. The various embroideries on the Sukajan took on Japanese cultural references the 2 most popular being the dragon & the tiger. The Japanese see dragons as benefactors and protectors of mankind & the tiger represents strength and courage. It protects from evil spirits and bad luck. Okinawa is the site of numerous U.
