She's a new Queen. The rising sun. The literal new dawn.
I wanna smooch her forehead. ;-;
I wanted to do some TDP fanart and had to stop myself before I just drew Viren or Aaravos again, so I went with homegirl who has what is, imo, one of the best character designs in the show.
Black women w/ gold motifs = me, sold, you should see how I reacted to Mel in Arcane. :')
I initially wanted to paint this, as the sketch was so pretty...but it was a double-edged sword. ;-; Nothing I did with colour brought it up to the standards of the sketch, and so it's been sitting in my WIPs for months, begging for liberation. ;-; Eventually decided to just go my usual cel-shading route and now I have a pretty Janai. ♥
Ft. a screencap background because it's just too hot for me to concentrate atm sobs sobs pls cool down weather i beg u-

Ezran being instrumental in either Callum's knowledge of what the cube does, or even in being able to use it because it may be linked to his blood line in a similar manner of Kim'Dael's mercy debt? Unless it's a subversion, maybe, (and a point of contention) that Callum can use it without him. Or, if Callum does outright trade it and it's not the boys working to save Rayla, it's gotta be for Ezran: "But as a father, I have a selfish wish: for you and Ezran to be free."
+ bonus how it makes me feel:

The beauty of The Queen's Mercy
I doubt it struck any of us before that Kimdael's collar was of importance. Taken to be just a jewelry element, but never of Sunfire make.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at this, it's been centuries now and the collar is still on her neck in The Bloodmoon Huntress...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there is an interesting implication I've gleaned after reading the story, here come the first thoughts...
In the new short story, The Queen's Mercy, Kimdael goes to Lux Aurea to seek the Protection of Queen Aditi. Protection from the dragons who had driven Moonshadow Elves out of their own forest and "killed them one by one" leaving only Kimdael.
Which we know is a lie, because the moonshadow race is perfectly fine in the show and that does not make her the last of them. Also, multiple times, she pretends to plead while it is evident that inside she is plotting something. That her visit to Lux Aurea is for another crime. She pretended to be meek to gain Aditi's protection. But she is there for a different motive for why else would the Bloodmoon Huntress walk in broad daylight?
As Zubeia mentioned, there was a time when, after the death of Luna Tenebris, the dragons fought over succession. So their wrath is very real. And Xadia did descend into chaos... but Lux Aurea held strong through it. So it seems evident that of someone wanted to seek protection at the queen's mercy, it was the place.
What is interesting is that the dragons killing other moonshadow elves. Specifically the reaction of the other elves in the court:
Tumblr media
It may seem like a rumour because we know moonshadow elves lived and that Kimdael is lying. Or perhaps twisting a truth...
Given reason, the dragons could have attacked the moonshadow elves, if they decided to intervene and help sort the matter. It is possible that the moonshadow elves are hiding from the dragons and that no one has seen them in a while that Kimdael's desperate plea raises the question in the minds of the court elves that it could be truth.
But Aditi sees through it and takes her to the forge where upon, she makes the ornament and puts it red hot, and burning, sealing it around Kimdael's neck. Even enchanted so if Kimdael tried to kill her, the collar will choke the huntress, and thus it binds her to the Sunfire royal line.
Here's where it gets messy. Aditi says:
Tumblr media
As of what Kimdael said, she pledges in return, the remainder of her entire life to repay the Queen's Mercy. And this moment a spark:
Tumblr media
The collar can only be removed by a member of Aditi's line. Kimdael is bound to servitude.
That leaves only TWO people: JANAI and KARIM...
The question is... who will remove it? More importantly, who will Kimdael side with?
One obvious answer is... well, Karim.
Tumblr media
Courtesy to this shot, it seems he will leave Lux Aurea. And Aaravos tempts makes into serving him by offering them what they seek. Karim has drive, he seeks a brighter future for Lux Aurea despite the way his ways clash with Janai's. And to better his own fate, maybe he would have left/escaped after the generals apprehended him.
Kimdael could rarely be accepted on Janai's side as she is obviously with the trio or will be later anyway, and Rayla will not let Kimdael anywhere near her friends.
And because of my previous meta here, between a possible connection with Kimdael and Aaravos, in the sense that maybe he is the one who gave her the longevity, in giving her knowledge of dark magic that she uses for the ritual and that he has kept her alive for some cause. (ie given her the opportunity of immortality that she followed in herself unknowing of a greater role she has to play)
She is a tool to him. One of his chess pieces.
She will be useful to Aaravos after he is free or perhaps she has something to do with the freedom... but anyway, it makes more sense that she joins the Aaravos party, and later or before her, Karim gets bound in it too...
Also it could be that she met Karim first, before Aaravos is released, and they are the ones Amaya, Rayla and Callum are against here:
Tumblr media
Whatever happens now, Kimdael, by the collar, is bound in the narrative.

Mercy and the Sunfire Monarchy
so I started this as just a short "Aditi or a direct ancestor was the originator of the Merciful Compromise, here's the evidence" but then it kind of turned into a general Sunfire meta on Janai and Aditi and I'm too lazy to extract it into two coherent parts
anyway I'm officially calling it now: either Aditi herself, or one of her close ancestors, was the one who proposed the "Merciful Compromise" of splitting the land between humans and elves
But at the last moment, a daughter of the elven leader proposed the Merciful Compromise. She asked that humans be allowed to move and settle the lands to the west.
— Book One: Moon, Prologue
Aditi, being queen of what is obviously a bloodline monarchy, would have been the daughter of a prior monarch.
Tumblr media
— s4e4: Through the Looking Glass
Note the numerous types of elves pictured: Aditi was not considered queen/leader of only Sunfire elves, therefore it's a reasonable assumption that the elven leader mentioned was another Sunfire monarch.
Tumblr media
— s5e5: Archmage Akiyu
Here's where things get a little messy: Aditi is Karim and Janai's great-grandmother. We still don't have a firm answer on elven lifespan, but it technically only has to be about 250-300 years to easily put Aditi's parent as Sunfire monarch 1000 years ago. Problem is, we know Aditi was queen as recently as 300 years ago, so she would have to have lived 700+ years to have been alive at the time of the expulsion of humans from Xadia.
Now, to be frank, this canon is not the best with timeline consistency, especially when it comes to reasonable length of time between events. Combined with the deliberate vagueness over elven lifespan (in that they clearly intended it to be significantly longer than a human's, but then probably realized that would make the two primary romantic relationships of the show sad and now don't seem to know what to do with it), it would not surprise me at all if they were just like, "yeah Aditi lived extra long because of... her exceptional connection to the Sun primal" or something. There does seem to be something special about Aditi, compared to Khessa and Janai—like, Janai's great, but I can't see her commanding the respect of archdragons (yet).
However, if we assume a 250-300 year lifespan, the originator of the Merciful Compromise could be Aditi's grandmother. If we continue to take Rayla's jab at humans' "sub-century" lifespan as a canon-establishing fact, with minimum expected elven lifespan at 100-200 years, you're looking at a distance more comparable to that between Aditi and Karim/Janai. If elven lifespan drops to "comparable to a human's, plus an extra decade or two so 100-120 is not abnormal," the distance becomes more like that between Ezran and the Orphan Queen. Even with the distance, those are considered significant connections—for Janai to Aditi, and for Ezran to the Orphan Queen. I don't think it's a stretch for Queen Aditi the Merciful to possibly have a connection drawn to a merciful ancestor.
Tumblr media
— The Queen's Mercy
Queen Aditi the Merciful. The Merciful Compromise.
The concept of mercy in The Queen's Mercy is very complex, and if anything at all, I think it points to a continuing dichotomy of Sunfire elves and Sunfire elf culture—the Sun primal is explicitly known for its destructive power and connection with strong emotions, but also has a less-acknowledged potential for healing and truth when balanced (Tales of Xadia, 137). Janai is introduced to us as an aggressive warrior, having attacked the fort Amaya commands and attempting to trick her into an ambush. She's shown to have a stern and hot temper when interrogating Amaya.
However, because Amaya showed her mercy she didn't expect, she's clearly deeply uncomfortable with Khessa's initial decision to just have Amaya killed (due to her being "worthless") and then even with Khessa's clearly pointed use of "letting the Light decide her fate." Khessa is obviously expecting her little sister to learn a harsh lesson about mercy in that scene: Amaya will be revealed to be corrupted, as all humans are, and Janai will see that her soft heart allowed her to be tricked. She's visibly disappointed when Amaya passes the trial, but at least keeps to her word and lets her live... as an object that is Janai's problem, now. (Probably she still expects to be vindicated, in the end.)
Tumblr media
— s3e3: Ghost
We don't see a lot of Khessa being queen, but that's not a very flattering scene for her. In The Queen's Soul, we see Karim and Janai remember her fondly... but there's also an interesting moment:
Tumblr media
— The Queen's Soul
Karim expects Janai to be the kind of ruler Khessa was, calling on her to take the same path as Khessa's "wisdom." Janai rebuffs this line of thinking, partly because she's not super thrilled to be queen... but also because, as the next sentences show, she doesn't plan to be the kind of queen Khessa was. We see throughout s4 the tension between the future Janai wants for her people and Sunfire tradition: blood duels to the death, the death penalty for nonviolent infractions... the start of the s4 Sunfire arc is literally Amaya mistaking a Sunfire ritual of joy and love for an attack.
Completely unrelated side note: Karim already has Osato's red glove in The Queen's Soul, meaning the events of After Darkness are within weeks of the end of s3. Boy's been holding on to that shit for years, now.
Aditi is portrayed as a ruler, a warrior, a smith, and a mage—aspects that encompass different kinds of power, as well as both creation and destruction. She is characterized as wise, kind, and merciful, but that doesn't make her naive in the face of unrepentant evil. She spares Kim'dael's life, but locks her into a redemption that will take lifetimes—and also hinges on the mercy of her descendants. (A mercy that Janai is not willing to extend, though that's the kind of thing that could still come around.) Janai may not be a mage and we haven't seen how much of a smith she may be, but we are seeing that she's a visionary who cares deeply about the future of her people, even at the expense of her own life.
Janai can stand up and say "this human is guilty of her crime, but death is not justice," the way Aditi could stand up and say "this blood duel tradition is nonsense and detrimental to our people," and the way someone, centuries earlier, stood up and said "all humans don't deserve to die."
The Merciful Compromise was proposed by a Sunfire elf of the royal line, send tweet.

"You've earned your prize! And I've decided that it's a kiss from yours truly~"
They were leading a party of elves and humans back from the outposts when Amaya's sharp eyes spotted a small, and rare, summerfox bush near on top of a ten meter cliff. She was still under a light duty order and could not simply climb up the cliffside to pick the fuzzy, fox-faced flowers. Janai could see her trying to hide a pout, and her heart couldn't bear it.
"Halt!" she ordered the party with a raised hand, "We'll take our meal break here. General Amaya, take a team to the stream and fill the canteens."
It wasn't where they'd planned to break, no one saw a tactical advantage to stopping here...and Amaya was clearly not happy about doing a private's task... but no one had the right to question her. They dismounted, unsaddled their horses and spread out to find a spot to eat their lunch while the highest ranking General in Katolis gathered everyone's canteens.
When she and her five lowest soldiers were out of sight, Janai went to the cliff. She took off her cape and crown, slung Amaya's saddlebag over her shoulder, and began the climb while ignoring the exasperated glares that her guards were trying to hide.
They were probably cursing her in their minds as she made her her way up. It wasn't the height, the fall probably wouldn't kill her, but it was their job to keep her from all harm. And here she was, putting herself in harm's way for a juvenal pursuit.
She came back victorious, a bag full of flowers. She ignored the stares and hastily put Amaya's saddlebag back on her horse. Then she quickly found a spot and dug into her lunch, probably looking far too innocent to be anything but guilty when the water bearers trudged back to the group.
When her team came back, Amaya immediately knew something was off, and she was at the butt of some sort of joke. Everyone was looking away from her and shaking with contained laughter, and she doubted it was because the queen made her do a grunt's chore.
-Stifling your laughter is useless. I'm deaf, remember?- That got most of her team laughing, the elves looked like they were suffering from embarrassment.
She wouldn't get an explanation for their behavior until they got back to to her tent that night when she opened her saddlebag, Her heart did some flips when she saw a dozen fuzzy, smiling summerfoxes looking up at her. She grinned, but decided against giving her girlfriend any thanks in the public stables. Slinging the bag over her shoulder, she followed the queen to her tent.
-So, some flowers suddenly appeared in my bag.-
"Is that so?" Janai tried to look innocent, but failed miserably, a smile taking over her face.
-Any idea who I should thank?-
"I may have had something to do with it."
-Well, you risked life and limb to fetch my flowers, and you've earned your prize! And I've decided that it's a kiss from yours truly.-
Janai tilted Amaya's chin up, "I can think of no greater reward." She cupped the human's face as their lips came together for a gentle kiss; the second one was a little deeper.
"Sister!" Karim's shout came through the tent canvas and broke Janai's concentration. She pulled away and looked to the entrance, Amaya followed her gaze. "You love-struck imbecile! Nearly breaking your neck to get some flowers for a beautiful woman?!"
"As if you would not."

The dragon prince theory; Part 2
Why Aaravos is evil Trust me, the last part may surprise you
Similar symbols:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one thing that is hiding in plain sight is a symbol seen throughout Katolis; on clothes, in the castle, on furniture, weapons and armor alike. Ezran happens to have the interesting symbol on his backpack strap- just like the symbol Aaravos is wearing on his crown... A few other people have also noticed the similarities, pointing it out. Why is Katolis using the same symbol Aaravos has? Does the royal family have more than one connection to Aaravos?
Also when the kingdom first came to be they were already using this symbol. Even stranger; Aaravos appears to be missing from the group of elven leaders while they are fighting Katolis in a war... Where did he go? We know he's not imprisoned yet since Aditi Is still alive and not crumbling out of existence like he said he did to her. So where is he?
Tumblr media
The villan
Every story has to have a villain, and that's no exception for The Orphan queens story as well. So, who was the villain in her story? The Orphan queen traveled into Xadia and saved the world. But from what? Or more like; who?
We look towards our very first clues. At SDCC 2019, the creators revealed The Orphan queen and a cool looking title design for her story. They plan to tell her story in a movie or through the show itself. But there is something strange about the title design- the O in Orphan queen is replaced by the sun primal source symbol.
Tumblr media
Could this be hinting at a connection between her and the Sunfire elves? Who would be the main villain? There is one person: queen Aditi. The grandma of queen Khessa, and the one that Aaravos killed with a flick of his finger. Aditi happens to be alive three hundred years ago when The Orphan queen was around.
Queen Aditi does not seem to like humans one bit seeing as how she was in a war against them. The absolutely strangest thing is Aaravos' hate towards Aditi. When we see him in Hearts of Cinder, he laughs, thinking about the time he killed Aditi and how ironic it was that he was doing the same thing to her granddaughter. His hate seems deep, so insanely deep to me. Aaravos acts like she was a really bad person, even beyond hating humans. She must have done something REALLY bad to make him hate her in that deep of a level. I feel like there is a good reason as to why he is a fallen star. What if... Aditi killed The Orphan queen? Think about it, The Orphan queen has a connection to Sunfire elves, Aditi hates humans, and Aaravos loathes her beyond reason. What if he became who he was because of all of this? You often see a reoccurring theme in The Dragon Prince, someone gets killed, and then sad and angry people want revenge, so they end up killing the killer... Just like Callum said; it's a never ending cycle. Doesn't make sense to you yet? Well, a few years ago, Aaron said something interesting at SDCC 2019 during the Q&A, and then I saw someone on Tumblr make a post about it.
"The name of a very important person to Aaravos will be in the map of a novel, but it will be a long time before you know what that means. A lot of his motivation comes from that relationship."
This proves that there is someone out there that Aaravos cares about, someone important to him. And a lot of his motivation comes from that relationship. So the bad things he's doing, is because he's motivated by that relationship... So what if the Orphan queen was killed by Aditi? What if Aaravos actually cares about her because she was his friend? What if he's motivated by her death? Aaravos may be an all powerful being, but that doesn't mean a vulnerable side to him doesn't exist...
Tumblr media
And hey! Maybe you should check out The Dragon Prince SDCC 2019 panel on YouTube?
