Izzy and the Myth of the Perfect Victim
One thing that's often bugged me about people saying "Izzy got off on it" about Ed cutting off his pinky toe is how then they proceed to assume "and that makes it okay" (or "Izzy is undeserving of sympathy"), as if that somehow follows at all.
I've spoken before about how I actually DO read Izzy as feeling positively about the interaction—and how I think this makes the scene even more tragic, because it means Izzy was so desperately miserable before that he thought something like this had to be preferable to the status quo. Personally I think that having a toe cut off would be too painful to be arousing, even for a pretty extreme masochist. But even if it was, at the end of the day, Izzy's still going to be missing that toe for the rest of his life.
Plus, even aside from from the permanent effects... people can still be physically aroused by things they find deeply traumatic. It's pretty victim-blamey to imply otherwise. And regardless of how much awe and hope Izzy might or might not have felt, I think it's pretty obvious that he definitely felt fear. Izzy now knows, with absolute certainty, that he's not safe in his own bed anymore, not at all. Even if he doesn't act traumatized, and even if he thinks the sacrifice was worth it, it'd still be a hell of a price to pay.
...Which brings me to the clip from earlier today. One of the things that struck me about it was how Izzy isn't being nice. He's being mean and giving the crew objectively unreasonable orders that they hate. And the crew STILL reacts by seeing underneath that, seeing how much he is hurting and trying to offer support.
It was really refreshing to see, because Izzy cannot afford to stop and cry and ask for help. He doesn't think it's safe to be vulnerable around other people, and he's probably right—it's obvious how much Izzy doesn't believe in the orders he's shouting, but he still goes at it with a kind of terrifying desperation. Maybe Izzy not getting the crew to obey orders is what causes Ed to take off more toes. Or maybe he simply thinks that if he doesn't do his job, if he's not useful, that he'll simply be discarded. (Ed might care about Izzy a great deal, but for all Izzy knows, the only reason Ed saved his life at the end of e9 was because he needed Izzy to fetch him tea.)
Izzy reacts to a lot of the stress in his life in messy ways, and while that's not great, it also doesn't make his suffering any less real. No one is obligated to reach out to help the angry, shouty first mate who insists that he's fine... but it's really wonderful when they do. People are still worthy of compassion even when they can't be the perfect victim.

EAH was one of my very favorite cartoons as a kid, and I've been enjoying it's renaissance very much, so REDESIGNS!!! (I've done a bunch over a couple months and put them on Instagram, but I figured I'd move them here cause Instagram sucks, so if you've seen them before over there that's why)
I think the original designs are aesthetically pleasing, but they're not super practical for the characters- case in point! Gay icon Darling Charming
I'm gonna put all my design notes under the cut so if you don't care about that carry on, have a nice day
Darlings original design is fun, but it doesn't serve an obvious purpose, at least not that I can see. She clearly wears armor on the outside of her outfit, the Marie Antoinette poof is a bit strange to me, and she has very little visually tying her to Dexter and Daring. I wanted to emphasize her secrecy, but also her passion for puzzle solving, riddles, combat tactics, ect. when she's around the people she trusts (as if the queer metaphor wasn't obvious enough)
Here are some details that just make me happy
-First, the hair. I knew I wanted to give the White Knight a more unique look, and I wanted to simplify it overall. I LOVE the original armor, but it would be a huge pain to animate, and I don't have the patience for that, so I went for a masquerade-ball-three-musketeers-vibe. The braided bun is still a fancy, regal style, but it's a lot easier for her to manage in her uniform
-I tried to synthesize the color schemes of the Charming siblings. They all have a pit of yellow, a bit of pinkish red, a bit of blue. The twins lean heavy into yellow and blue, with splashes of red where thematically appropriate. Darling doesn't really communicate with Daring much, so she has the least amount of red. I think having more muted colors in comparison to her brothers also emphasizes the fact that she's hiding herself. She is very much defying her family with her ambitions, and she has to work hard to keep it under wraps. Sort of related, I gave her a tooth gap, because it's a cute design detail, but also to act as a "flaw" to contrast with Daring. Daring's primary physical trait is his ungodly perfect teeth, so I thought it'd be fun to give her an "imperfect" trait, like Dexter and his glasses. There's nothing actually wrong with them, but it's a failure to reach the insane expectations that the Charming family has cultivated over the generations. Basically the Charmings are petty and I feel bad for the youngest generation.
-Speaking of concealment! There are a couple bits that I thought would be fun to hide throughout her outfit. First, the skirt is flowy enough and the shirt is positioned just right so that you can't tell, but she has pieces of leather armor on at all times. She saves the plates for wonderland. She also wears gloves to hide the callouses on her fingers from swordfighting! She also probably keeps knives in her hair somewhere. Pulling a small switchblade out of the base of her bun just seems like something she would do
-Final thing, I gave her a scar! From what I can tell, she's always been very rough-and-tumble, so I gave her a scar over her brow. She likes to pretend it's from a Mysterious Incident to mess with her friends, but really she was wrestling Daring when they were like, 4 and 6, and she bonked her face into a table. She got over it real fast, but Daring got a long lecture about it, and that's when he started getting over-protective about her

Also... Madame Pinnie did mention that Morell has had horny thoughts in which HE'S the one being eaten, even if he's also super terrified of that... And... Firstly, Vorticia's a snake-monster, so idk how her body would react to the poison, but if we're being hopeful, she'd be immune to it - or maybe the fact that she's the icon of greed has something to do with it(?); second of all, she'd probably have the equipment and/or magic to get rid of the poison.
Rinxx x Nebul: HEAR ME OUT HEAR ME OUT-- Nebul to me seems like the type to absolutely exploit the fact that Rinxx has a ton of money and would use him to buy all the sex toys and pearls he could ever want (plus stuff for Purpur of course). Also, the idea of Rinxx being a sugar daddy for Nebul is HILARIOUS. I can imagine Nebul knowing this and being frustrated, because he can't just turn around and give the bird to an Icon (his ass is big but his balls aren't). He has to live with the fact that, no matter how he dominates Rinxx in the bed, no matter how much the Icon allows the Wraith to degrade and demean and even hurt him-- Nebul is not the one who's in control of the dynamic. Idk if he would, but would Nebul ever grow to start liking the fact that he's actually the submissive one? (On a sidenote: I can imagine Rinxx groping Nebul a lot cause he's thick as FUCK and also forcing the guy to wear much tighter, more leg revealing clothes that hug his thighs and ass-- also forcibly pounding Nebul into submission when Nebul irritates him, hehah)

Ah, Kalymir and Patches, we've talked about that. You captured the essence of it well, but the ass tearing is going to be more literal than physical here. Patches, ever the glutton for pain, will find all his cravings brutally satisfied. And Kalymir, ever fond of resilient little things, will adore taking Patches to his undead breaking point over and over and over.
Morell and Vorticia is equally stressful. All of these are. Vorticia will work Morell stupid in her desire to taste all his talent, but Mori is getting a delicious ego stroke as well as watching a massive woman take rabid, almost lustful enjoyment from devouring his cuisine. It'd be hard to ignore an inkling of chemistry here. But, as you know, typically, most people who lay with Vorticia perish. Perhaps it'll be a different story here, she wouldn't want to lose the best chef she's ever met!
Rinx and Nebul is an interesting pair. And indeed, Nebul will keep fighting for his dominating role as hard as he can. Sexually, he'll never accept submission, and outside of intimacy, he'll still try to cling to any minuscule shred of power he can attain, even if all he can do in certain situations is refuse gifts- Which is very frustrating for Rinx. Fact of the matter is that even when he holds control, it is only allowed and never inherent, which will chew at the wraith. But goodness, the benefits of this dynamic are so many... He can at least revel in the power of being so wanted by someone of such status.

He blames himself when it'd gotten so bad that it'd caused your knees to misalign after a particularly bad mission and you had to nearly leave the military. He felt responsible for it, it should be him, not you.
But to show that he cared and wanted nothing but the best for you:
He took you to every doctor's appointment after the initial time in the hospital.
He went with you to every physical therapy appointment.
Every physical therapy appointment began with him sitting in the corner, watching the physical therapist help you with your knees, asking a million questions a second.
"Is it safe to go that far?"
"Don't pull her muscle?"
"Y/N, tell him when it hurts."
About halfway through the appointment, John practically takes over the appointment, annoying the physical therapist.
The physical therapist has considered quitting numerous times.
John doesn't care. He'll help you him self if you'd let him, but you needed an actual physical therapist.
He does help you with certain exercises that you need to do outside of the physical therapist appointments.
A hand is always on one of your knees at all times.
His hands are so warm,
So when your legs and knees are aching and sore, he will rub his hands on them, massaging them gently.

When your legs are in pain, he will rub and gently massage until you feel better
You called his hands your "leg warmers" once and he agreed with you because he thought it was funny.

Zelda's gender identity is pretty open. Link referred to her with "They" pronouns earlier in the comic but I didn't feel it was very relevant to bring up at the time lmfao. Zelda's all sorts of gender in this comic to say the least.
The reason why Vaati knows she's around is smth I'll get into later when it's more relevant.

And I finally get to talk in detail about Dark Link’s "mechanics" for a lack of a better term will expand on the next page.
Design/art wise:
Dark's teeth are all sharp here when normally, despite being a demon his teeth are flat/human looking teeth.
The background is a more red version of the head-space Vio and Green have been dragged to when Dark talks to them/at them.
Immediately he's back to being himself.
Weirdly happy, which settles in the true horror of the previous outbirst:
He didn't mean, a single word of what he just said.
He said that, PURELY to hurt Vaati because it's something that Vaati already feels about himself. He wasn't actually MAD at Vaati and snapping in response to Vaati's abuse. He was just reflecting Vaati's anger right back at him.
So smth about Dark:
He often reflects DIRECTLY how others behave.
Instances of such:
The madder Vaati got in this talk, the "angrier" Dark Link got right back at him.
He shouted at Dark to "Do something" and he responded angrily back that he didn't want to hurt Zelda.
He shouted and berated Dark Link causing Dark to shout that nobody loves Vaati.
Dark Link's nature is to be calm, quiet, pretty "Happy" and kinda hopelessly romantic lmao. He wants to have his idea of "Fun" with people.
He MIMICS people.
Dark has no identity of his own (At least he doesn't seem to realize he does) so often he just bounces off people. He only takes joy in hurting others atm.
Not even in an outright malicious way. At least not the kind of malicious that's "haha I broke the hero because I hate him". This is just what his idea of "Fun" is. What his idea of normal interactions are. This is just what he's suposed to be doing rn.
He isn't acting much outside of his direct reason for creation. What he even deems as fun is indicative of his creation as well.
Engaging with their range of emotions and characters and memories he deems interesting is FUN to him.
If his dialogue from page 121 is anything to go off of, bro really doesn't give a shit about his job. He just wants to have fun:
He finds it amusing Shadow can ALSO manipulate people's feelings, outright kind of complimenting him for it.
And then gets hopelessly distracted and starts talking about what he'd "Rather do" right now.
Which involves hugging Vio and reading oop.
He didn't get SUPER involved/invested in Shadow's memories until Vio and Shadow were doing more "interesting" things, at least in Dark's opinion of what is "interesting."
Dark wants to engage in relationships lmfao. But he's stuck engaging with memories living though them vicariously and hurting people he supposedly "Likes".
He wants to dance with someone and kiss them and in general have "happy" moments with someone. But is stuck being a curse that's only purpose is to break the hero apart and reflect negativity.
It's kinda sad.
But he clearly hasn't reflected on his own life/situation outside of Vaati's feelings towards him.
Also: Dark has no desire to kill any of the Link or Link himself...keep this in mind.
Again: He reflects Vaati's mood of annoyance with that face in the second panel. Which kills me. You just know Vaati's making the same face off screen lmfao.
Symbolism symbolism
Dark plucks the violet but leaves the silent princess alone outside of petting it. Call back to how he left Zelda alone.
He says more stuff we kinda already know, but recapping is good. Actually, we spent like 100 pages in flashbacks, hah.
It also shows what Dark learned/his takeaway from watching their interactions.
Haha oh Dark why are you ripping petals out?
There's smth to be said about him ripping the petals out as the game "She loves me, she loves me not" is a vibe that's being invoked here.
With the odd amount of petals (Being 5) it'd land on "She loves me" by the way.
A relatively innocent game turned into something sinister as he rips petals out in accordance with how many heroes there are.
Dark's behavior continues to be ODD, as he claims Shadow's predicament is "Sad". Which is true.
But...does his expression REALLY scream that he's ACTUALLY sad about it to you?
His chest eyeball just stares blankly forward, his body language implies he's just kinda pretending or acting sad.
Which makes sense, Dark hasn't been shown to clearly understand sorrow properly as even when he cried he was still smiling.
He compares Vio and Shadow's struggles with their identities directly as they're both struggling with who they're SUPOSED to be compared to who they are.
Again: he's ripping a petal out as he talks about each member of the Link squad.

For whatever reason Vio is not in his present day look here. He's how he looked 7 years ago.
You could make a lot of different assumptions as to why:
Is this how Dark sees Vio? Vio visually represented to be stuck in the past. Vio just feeling more childishly scared in the face of what's happening.
Dark's comforting Vio here in a similar manor to how Shadow did though.
Also super weird: Dark actually in a round about way compliments Vio here.
"He's so blinded by his self hatred he can't see just how much everyone adores him because of his calm cool nature..."
Dark can feel how others feel about Vio and repeated those opinions.
This is smth to note because so far the only things he's really repeated out loud have been negative things people feel about THEMSELVES.
Outside of when he complimented Shadow.
But this shows he can actually recognize positive feelings people have towards others and repeat those too...
And outright stating: He "likes" Vio.
Because of his strong reaction to Zelda, we can assume that he likes people depending on how others feel about them. Because the team likes Vio: So does Dark Link.
Another petal falls while he dips into Green's problems. Who's the only other one we've seen him play around with so far outside of Vio and Shadow And not even really with Shadow...
Weirdly enough Green feels empty inside because he's diet link lmfao.
I told yall I'd give him a personality.
Harbors guilt for lazing around when everyone else was doing stuff. Ouch.
He felt the need to promise Link he'd keep shit okay but he doesn't even know if he CAN.
Blue and his ptsd.
Dark continues to hug people while utterly obliterating them as people lmao.
Blue can't express his emotions arounv Vio which is a theme we'll see as we go into the comic more.
Vio looking back at Blue tho is, a thing.
To be fair to Dark's assesment of Red: red hasn't done anything in the comic yet.
Him chucking the flower the second it's not pretty anymore and, eating the petal is just funny in a morbid way.
Creepy thing: He ate the petal that "Symbolized" Red. The sweet optimistic character. Kinda just shows Dark consumes everything around him in a pit of despair lmfao. Also it's hilarious that he ate smth that he shouldn't have.
Vaati's disgusted reaction to said petal eating is very funny and Dark's monologue about HIMSELF is very telling I feel.
He thinks he's a hero, because he's saving someone. Removed from context that Vaati is a villain and the fac to "Save" Vaati he needed to hurt the REAL hero of Hyrule...
His actions are preventative at the moment: he's making so Link can't reform and the pieces can't seal Vaati back into the sword.
Dark's actions all make sense to Dark Link. XD
Nobody is cheering him, so he just blatantly says "YAY DARK LINK!!!" Which is honestly the funniest lines Dark has said purely because it shows his childish outlook on this entire situation.
He's just the hero saving Vaati.
Dark's clearly annoyed to some degree nothing he does is bringing Vaati any amount of satisfaction.
He did what he was supposed to do. The sword is drawn. Vaati is free.
Dark even mocks Vaati's impatience and his need to control someone else to do his work for him. Hitting Vaati right where it hurts with Vaati's insecurity about being a pawn.
Instantly also going for the throat with "Master Elzo and Link would be disgusted with you"
Obviously: He's talking about Minish Cap Link NOT "our" Link.
This use of their names offends Vaati to no end.
The fight scene is fun, enough said. XD
Okay fine: Ramble thoughts.
Dark manages to mauver his way into not getting properly hit.
Dark's fascination with strangling people is not missed as he does it to Vaati here.
As he repeats things he knows will hurt Vaati's feelings.
Vaati is being unreasonable and stupid in Dark's eyes so him bringing up Vaati's insecurities to make a point is just his attempt to get Vaati to listen to him.
Despite his actions seeming to go against it: He IS on Vaati's side and IS trying to "save" Vaati.
He isn't even saying/acting out of spite, he's just kinda lowkey annoyed and exasperated at Vaati at best. XD

somehting i can't really get out of my head are the acting choices the main four make - especially when it comes to their eyes, and how much that gives away about their characters and gives way for theories
thua has deeply patient and incredibly kind eyes, something that is a give because louis does, but i think it's really just emphasised in the show. he looks at the world with not necessarily a positive outlook, but with a kind one all the same because he perceives things and understands them before interacting i think. he'd rather stand back and form his own opinion than to be dragged into things, and he knows how to stand his ground in a way that lets him be calm and in peace. thua looks at people and gets them, some maybe more than other but he understands them and he treats them kindly if they deserve it and if they don't, well. that's their problem and not his
in contrast we have can and my god, neo really puts that boy in pain. it's incredible honestly because he still has that comedic, class clown kind of side to him but the second he gets a chance to let that slip away, anytime he looks at thua he looks like he's in actual, physical pain. kan knows what's going on, kan knows what he wants and who he wants and thinks that he can't have that because it's not "right". he's dealing with his internalised homophobia while feeling like he doesn't have any support with it, and now the one person he feels safe with is pulling away and still looking at him kindly and he knows that thua is right but can't do anything about it. so he's in pain instead, and i wonder what will bring about the breaking point - when he can't keep that at bay anymore
same goes for akk, honestly. i've known first is an incredible actor ever since not me, but he's really putting his all into akk, because even if akk's face is neutral his eyes speak volumes.
akk looks terrified whenever he's near ayan, or when something happens that he now has to deal with, when yet another responsibility or stressor falls on him that he has to figure out. with ayan especially he's confused and scared because we've been shown that he doesn't have experiences with romantic relationships (ace!akk would work so well because of this), so his first object of affection being a boy? who does nothing but cause trouble and forces him to rethink rules akk's been religiously following for years? absolutely terrifying. that also explains his reluctance with ayan, even though he's clearly aware of his feelings on some level - it's something he's too scared to really get into because it'd throw his whole idea of the world into a blender
and ayan? well. ayan has a fire in his eyes that keeps on flickering. khaotung is delivering emotions like sucker punches through minute shifts in ayan's face and eyes and it's incredible to watch.
ayan burns for the revolution and revenge that he wants and needs to bring around, and that fire is what keeps him fuelled, it's what makes him flirt his way through interactions with akk because that's fun and easy, and that fire is what makes him so fiercely angry at the world. he needs to keep it stoked because if he doesn't, then we see him mourn and grieve, we see him falter from that cocky bastard who won't back down into just a boy who lost his rolemodel, and who feels alone in this new school and his mission, and who holds incredible amounts of gentleness, and fondness and love inside but doesn't know how to share it, or who to share it with (because being with akk and akk being who he is at this point in time would go entirely against ayan's ideals, lets be real)
i don't really have a point with this, i'm just very grateful for the cast for doing such an incredible job with their characters and the show and that we get to see these four hopefully find their happiness in a way that lets their eyes smile too

i have hypermobile ehlers-danlos syndrome which, for the uninitiated, is a joint connectivity disorder - meaning that my joints don't work properly and can dislocate way easier than the average person - which also comes with chronic pain/fatigue, slower wound healing, a whole bunch of possible comorbid shit (believe it or not, autism and EDS are somewhat comorbid!), and just general ouchy body-no-worky shit. i can't repeatedly jump up and down without all of my joints from my hips down threatening to dislocate. i once fully dislocated my knee by Doing Maths Homework for a few hours and then trying to stand up after. sometimes my neck just violently spasms for no reason, which hurts mega bad and also sucks mega bad.
it also means i can very nonchalantly deal with things that freak other people out! my shoulder nearly dislocated several times in class a few weeks ago and i just calmly shoved it back in place. i was once late to lesson in highschool bc my legs wouldn't stop spasming and i had to sit down in a vacant classroom with a teacher, and the teacher looked TERRIFIED whilst i was mostly just worried about getting another late mark. back when i still wore a binder (which i haven't in years, for probably increasingly obvious reasons) i used to physically reach under my ribcage and pull it back into place when the pressure caused it to subluxate.
all this to say: i think it'd be fucking HILARIOUS if phoenix actually-indestructible human-nokia you-cannot-kill-me-in-a-way-that-matters wright had EDS. in fact, i actively headcanon it! bc the mental image of him fully dislocating a limb and just casually clunking it back in place (with a few streams of pained tears, of course, but still smiling and cracking a dumb joke about it) whilst maya watches on in horror is startlingly canon-accurate and also it's a little funny to imagine a character who's so notoriously difficult to injure being taken out by Sitting With His Legs Crossed

Would it be a major turn off if a character, in a world where almost everyone has magic, only had a few chances before they have to cause like actual bodily harm in order to continue using it?
Some additional context I have to justify it are that 1. It's almost OP and I need some things to balance it out. Like, it's literally immortality that's kinda like save points, just done so it isn't completely videogame style (since that world isn't a video game) 2. Most people's powers do have side effects. However, to be fair, they're supposed to make sense (e.g. former protagonist has fire powers, so she's also heat resistant but is naturally very hot, so cold hurts more before it heats up and she can't touch things that need cold because she can't just switch off the heat, or one that's probably more cliche but they've got super strength and don't know how much force they're actually applying, gentle to them still is pretty rough a lot of the time, etc), and I'm not sure if having to actually injure yourself is a good side effect to near-immortality 3. She also has a sort of healing ability doubled with it, where no matter how awful the injury it heals in 24 hours (like from light paper cut to the loss of a limb, it is always 24 hours, it just made more sense to me that way), so as long as she stops the bleeding she'll be fine the next day
But then I feel like it's a bit too much since 1. She would lose any motive to use it - she doesn't worry about death, so with the injury and pain it'd likely just be like adding 0+-1 when you're trying to get 2 (if that makes sense), 2. She's in single-digits still, so it'd be a child harming themself because they don't want to die, which while the tone is definitely supposed to get dark at some point I feel like that might just be a bit much both to read and to write, and 3. There's already another balance in place - if she dies, she'll appear back at the last "save" (considering it's inspired by video games that's the quickest way to describe it), and will lose any memory or development that happened in-between. It also only lasts ~a month so that she won't be completely immortal, she has to keep redoing it if she wants to be. So she'd physically and mentally revert back to up to a month ago, in the exact place she was no matter what happened there in-between, no matter where she's been or what she's learned in-between. Still debating whether or not there should be a way to regain the memories or not.
I'm also not sure if I actually want to give her another reason to hesitate to use it, or if it's just because I like letting characters suffer in my head, but the story isn't going to just be in my head so I want it to be actually fun instead of just agony lol. I don't want my story to be too affected by my sadism exclusively reserved for fictional characters.
Sorry it's long and probably awkward, and that it probably has way too much info when I just needed a little bit, I just want to write my story (and current protagonist) decently and not be TOO harsh on the characters. While the way I wrote probably made it kinda clear which way I'm thinking of going, I just wanted an outsider opinion that I trust before choosing one way or the other. Sorry if it's too uncomfortable or morbid or anything, idk where else to ask and I'm embarrassed to ask people I know irl (personal issues 💀)

Bodily Harm as Consequence of Magic Use
I feel like "bodily harm" is really broad and random consequence of using magic. So... after a few uses, if the character uses magic again, their arm or leg just randomly breaks? Or a huge gash opens up on their back? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Typically, the consequences of magic are more logical:
-- Physical fatigue (lots of energy coursing through your body)
-- Mental fatigue (extreme focus, quick thinking, mental stress)
-- Loss of source (source of magic is limited so lost once used up)
-- Harm to other (someone/something related is harmed by use)
You would typically choose one of these consequences (though physical and mental fatigue often go hand-in-hand), then the extent of the consequence is greater with the power/amount of magic used. In other words, a smaller spell has a smaller consequence. A bigger spell has a bigger consequence. A small spell would cause a little bit of physical exhaustion. A big spell would cause the person to pass out for a little while.
If you can find some way for the injuries to make sense, then you could still do that. But I would also add the consequence that injuries incurred via magic use don't heal in 24 hours. And while injured, no magic can be used. That way there's an actual cost to using magic too often. It's not just a superficial cost like an injury. They're putting themselves in the position of being powerless until the injury heals naturally.

Metaphor Done Right: Childhood's End in KinnPorsche
Full transparency: I have not read this book. But I did major in literature which means I am highly proficient in Making Books Make Sense without reading them. Having said that, if anyone who has read this book calls bullshit on me - that's valid. If you read the book and think this post makes no sense, you're probably right. All I'm saying is I think I could pull off a decent grade in a KinnPorsche Lit Analysis course XD
Like any good metaphor, this one has multiple meanings: a tangible, in-universe meaning, and a broader, meta-meaning - so bear with me; as per usual, I have a lot to say.
The Title
I don't think the title is the only reason this book was chosen, but before we get to that - even if it was the only reason this book was chosen, it has more depth to it than the message it intends to send to the viewers.
Who is reading this book, in-universe? Who chose to read this book in-universe? Vegas.
Right, obviously I didn't need to tell you that, but y'all - we do choose books by their covers, I don't care what anyone says, and we choose them by their titles. I had multiple lectures on cover design and analysis during uni because of this and it was actually fascinating.
I also want to consider what Vegas is trying to get from reading. We might read for pleasure, to learn a new skill, or to learn something about ourselves and the world we live in. I look at Vegas's face here and I think about him asking his abusive father "What am I supposed to do?" and I think he's looking for answers.
The title of the book might be meaningful for us, the viewers, but it had meaning for Vegas and that's a lot more important. Do y'all think Vegas, who has grown up alongside death and amidst abuse his whole life, is morning the loss of his childhood now, in, what, his 20s? I don't. Do y'all think Vegas, who's tortured and killed repeatedly, is a child? Yeah, me neither.
So why this book? Daddy issues again, yep! Gun treats Vegas like a child! He even groups him in with Macau, who is very clearly more childlike in age and demeanor. And here's Vegas thinking he's getting this treatment because he's a failure, looking across the bridge at Kinn who's in the process of taking over for his father. Vegas does one thing of his own volition and his dad says he's ruined everything. He can't come close to being himself. It's insulting and painful for him. We might see the title Childhood's End and think "loss of innocence" but Vegas sees it and probably thinks "freedom." Most 20-something-year-olds with an overbearing parent would, and especially one with and overbearing and abusive parent. I don't think it will give him the answers he was expecting, but I think the book's answer does further the one that Pete ultimately provides.
The Book as a Book
Just real quick - the fact that of all KP characters, we're seeing Vegas read and be associated with books has meaning on its own. This goes back to him needing to look for answers beyond the ones he's been handed by the people in his life - but books can indicate intellect, knowledge, learning. Also, very relevantly, words and their meanings. Vegas reading a book, Vegas reading into Pete's words... They're connected. I also find it interesting that this would indicate, that, even though Vegas doesn't believe in honesty, words are important to him. I mean, if Pete used those double meanings with Porsche - even Kinn, probably - it'd be a lost cause, I think.
The Plot
My quick summary of the book, based off of its Wikipedia page: Aliens decide that humans need supervision. At first they're unobtrusive and seem to be a positive force, leading to great creative feats within the human race. Unsurprisingly, things go sideways and children start losing their identity and merge into a group consciousness - one which is powerful, and dangerous. They're isolated, physically, from everyone else. They eventually lead to the end of the Earth and the end of humanity.
My gut instinct was that Vegas would feel like an alien in the context of a sci-fi book. A victim of child abuse and he's also gay? I mean...
But nope, it's worse than that :) The aliens in this book end up on top, anyway. Vegas feels like a broken human. He's nearing his shattering point, the point of no return, the point of - like the children in the book - losing his whole identity to the demands of his father. Let's break down that summary line by line.
Aliens decide that humans need supervision. Just like Gun constantly supervising his adult son. Ah, Gun, the unnecessary supervision in Vegas's life. The sneaky little bastard that convinced Vegas that Gun was a positive force in his life, and that Vegas was the one fucking things up. Which leads us to the next bit:
At first they're unobtrusive and seem to be a positive force, leading to great creative feats within the human race. At first, it didn't seem so bad - it seemed like Gun was trusting Vegas with things, and Vegas felt pretty powerful kidnapping Porsche and having (seemingly) free rein to play his mind games.
Unsurprisingly, things go sideways and children start losing their identity and merge into a group consciousness - one which is powerful, and dangerous. There's a lot here, but Vegas is losing his identity here. He willingly sacrificed his humanity at (probably) a pretty young age, what with all the death and torture, but he'd come to embrace it. But when things go wrong, it's Vegas who's bad, it's his identity that's flawed. The little things that he chose to do of his own volition - even within the rules provided by his father - are to blame for any failures ("Why didn’t you do what I told you? Why did you defy me?").
They're isolated, physically, from everyone else. This one is obvious, right? Isolated from the rest of society, isolated from the main family, isolated from his own family (Macau) at the safe house. Isolated by the experience of growing up in an abusive household (What did he say to Pete? "You've never gone through what I have?" Huh.). Vegas is very much alone.
They eventually lead to the end of the Earth and the end of humanity. This is the direction Vegas is currently headed. Absolute destruction.
And the children in this book end up kind of in-between human and alien. Pretty nicely aligns with Vegas's monstrous human attributes, the way he's scary even within the mafia world, to everyone except his father. I think that's the abuse coming in to play, mentally he's in a very different place than Kinn and his brothers, even though they all grew up in the mafia. It makes Pete, who's had the same parental experience as Vegas and wasn't from the mafia world originally, especially interesting because he blends in so seamlessly.
It's also interesting that the book's plot twists the meaning of the title on its head. "Childhood's End" has multiple meanings: the children are warped to be these alien-humans, so the literal end of the human children and also the end of humanity's supposed utopia. Maybe utopia under alien supervision looks good, and maybe to Vegas (to any kid), having a father to guide him looks good, but both are leading to a stripping of identity that will end very badly.
Thematic Metaphors
Drive to Conquer
The "peaceful alien invasion" very much parallels colonialism and assimilation. I don't know how to read that summary and not get that vibe. Gun isn't trying to take over a country or a culture, but I think there's something there. The drive to conquer is a huge part of their family. In the book, the alien-human children ultimately consume the Earth, and I wonder if they inherited that from the aliens. I don't know if that's a real thing or just something that I'm incorrectly assuming/hoping for. There's something satisfying about that parallel with Gun and Vegas regardless, but if it's an inherited thing in the book it would really be a perfect fit.
Deception
Sparknotes actually gave me this one. You can probably see it already - the aliens deceived the humans into believing they were helping humanity grow; Gun deceived Vegas into believing he was a dad helping his son grow. Deception is a core part of who Vegas is. There's more of it in the book, but you get the point. Super on par with Vegas and his world. Made more interesting with Pete, who wields his honesty as power and intellect when talking to Vegas, but is also very much capable of deception, as we've seen with his duality.
Does the book give Vegas an answer?
Well... he didn't finish it, I assume, but also, I think the cover being knocked off was telling - I took it to mean that Vegas won't find his answer in books, or at least not in this one.
Also, the book ends with the destruction of humanity. He'd know this already, assuming he read the blurb on the inside cover or the back of the book.
But maybe we can say it would give Vegas a partial answer. It would tell him what not to do. The end of humanity in the book seems to be framed as an inconsequential, but net good thing... for the aliens. For Gun, that would be. For Vegas, following his father will only lead to destruction in the worst way possible - loss of identity, and then loss of, well, everything he currently cares about as an individual. Assuming his father's overwhelming power parallels that of the aliens, maybe fighting his father directly also isn't an option. So he needs to find a third option, which - as previously discussed - is provided by Pete.

A little bit of a vent on my health issue as well as the cause of it. Please feel free to ignore this I just need to talk for a moment given the day today and try to wrap my head around this-
So awhile back I started dealing with a reoccurring health problem that I've been dealing with since I was 12 years old. This health issue is not life threatening but it's been stressful and painful to deal with. This health issue is known as a pilonidal cyst. It's a cyst that develops at the tailbone/lower spinal area. It's rather embarrassing and incredibly gross but at the same time it's just how my life works so anyways-
Because of this health issue I'd had to get surgery twice within my lifetime to try and keep it from coming back. Once when I was 12, and once when I was in my high school years. And for awhile it stayed away until a few years ago it'd came back for a third time. And for awhile I've dealt with it, taking antibiotics and calling off from work to rest and not push myself when it gets bad. Why am I talking about this you ask?
Well at the beginning of this week, that same health issue came up, and basically the entire rest of the week I've been either struggling to walk, have been having trouble sitting on my butt in certain positions and have had major back pain because of it. When Tuesday/Wednesday rolled around it busted and I believed that I'd get better since it was starting to drain.
I was wrong.
As soon as it busted, I've been incredibly ill. I've been getting headaches, fevers, and horrendous bouts of nausea. So much so that I've had to call off every day of work and I had to call my doctor to get antibiotics which is the usual drill when this happens. However this time it was different, my doctor had personally asked me if I could come into the office in person asap. Which leads to today.
I go to the doctor and get checked out and long story short I get basically told this.
My scar tissue is having a newer, slightly bigger cyst developing underneath. So much so that he strongly recommends that I get the surgery. He also wants me off from work for the rest of this week as well as next week, well after Thanksgiving to try and heal from the infection of said cyst as well as have the antibiotics do their job and get an appointment set up to meet with the surgeon they've referred me to.
I've went to this surgeon before for an earlier referral, however I'd refused to do the surgery because at the time my cyst wasn't exactly needing that kind of medical care. It was manageable. That and unlike the other two surgeons I'd went to in the past, this one was actually honest with me and told me that even if I'd gotten this surgery, it wasn't a complete guarantee that I'd be rid of this horrible thing. That sometime down the line in my lifetime it could actually come back and we'd have to do surgery again. So back in August I'd told them that I wouldn't do it because in my mind, it just seemed like an absolute waste of time especially given that I could very well end up in the same position once again later within my life. That and I was just so tired of it, it'd be the third time I'd be doing this insanity.
But now it's unavoidable. Because it's getting a new cyst beneath the scar tissue and it's gotten bigger and it's gotten to a point where it's quite literally fucking with my life and way of living. Am I upset about this development?
Absolutely.
In fact I'm currently trying not to break down, just feeling completely numb to the situation. I want to scream, I want to curse, I want to break something, but I also just want to curl up into a ball underneath my blankets and just stay there till this nightmare is over and done with.
I hate it, I hate it so much. That this stupid cyst has been haunting me since sixth grade, that I can't ever seem to be free from it and that I'll always have reminders of it. Whether it's in physical form or in scars on my tailbone and lower back. I just want a fucking break from all the bullshit of this year, from all the health issues that seem to never end. I don't want to be sick anymore, or be in pain constantly anymore.
I just want to be normal and not deal with this anymore.
I have no idea how I'm even going to make this work, how I'm going to earn money while I recover from this surgery whenever I finally get it. I've got bills to pay and mouths to help feed, pets to take care of and not to mention the holidays and whatnot. The only good thing is that I've got my family supporting me during all this, as well as an incredible boss who's been the most understanding and patient woman I've ever had the pleasure to work for.
I don't know what the future will bring, and honest to God I'm worried as well as frustrated with everything but hopefully things will work out in the end. Also I know that it's selfish of me to ask y'all this, but please pray for me, cuz I'm gonna need all the help I can get with this entire situation.

Do we know if the Cloak of Levitation can feel pain? I know that it can to some extent, but could it get hurt by like a taser or something?
Yooo somehow I got not one but two anon asks tonight and I'm just delighted??? Great pick me up at the end of the day. (Other ask will be answered hopefully tomorrow.)
Anyway! I'm going to assume you mean movie canon (the Cloak wasn't even sentient in a lot of the comic history so) and I'll go off that. So we see the Cloak getting torn or ripped in a couple ways in the MCU:
Dormammu disintegration:
Thanos tear:
Wanda burn:
I personally can't remember the Cloak flinching or the like with any of these on-screen hurts (though it did fly away from Thanos after he tore part of it).
In terms of practicality, it wouldn't make sense to make a magical relic with the duty to protect the sorcerer wearing it feel pain as other living beings do. I can imagine that too much damage inflicted upon it would cause its magic to get significantly lessened, making it "look" weak in movement - but actually feeling the damage would be an absolutely impractical thing to purposefully embue into the Cloak itself.
That said, I think it'd be very easy for both sorcerer and casual onlooker to think that the Cloak might be in pain because humans give human emotions to inanimate objects all the time (see that thread about the bomb-finding robot that had its testing stopped because it losing its legs to bombs was "too inhumane"). Just like Stephen shows sympathy to the Cloak in MoM for getting "dinged up" and promising to get it fixed, I imagine anyone with some sort of emotional connection to the Cloak would show sympathy at it getting "hurt" - even though the Cloak very likely has no pain receptors.
When it comes to non-magical attacks like electricity from a taser, I don't think it'd be affected at all. I don't necessarily think it could block the attack, though perhaps it could dampen the effect. It's clearly affected physically by magic and by really strong people like Thanos, though even Thanos had to really work to tear it. But it seems that it would need to be severely torn up to be "weakened".
I personally headcanon that it can stop bullets a la bulletproof vests can stop bullets, only using magic as opposed to specific meshes and materials. I also headcanon that there are spells or other relics out there that could stop it from working temporarily, though this again doesn't cause it to feel pain.
Edit: The Sands of Nisanti made it stop working in MoM so there you go. (I don't think it'd have let Stephen just lay there otherwise.)

oooooo so I have two ideas here- whichever one you like better is cool :D
• for disorientation- another layer of it would be a q!etoiles being thrown into a vanilla world and having to go through the sudden loss of the extensive stamina and extra layer of health. those add ons that are required in a world as buffed as theirs would def be a rough transition. the sudden rip to half of what you've adjusted to be your body's new basic functions would be rough but mwah the pure painful angst :D put this funky fighter through the wringer WOOOOO HAVING HIM SHOW UP ALREADY INJURED the idea of his body throbbing with phantom injuries because if it's just his body adjusting to the new world- then yes his health is now Normal and so there's no physical injuries. but the inner pain of his entire beings durability being divided like this would cause lots of pain ^-^ angst)
• the other idea though- is the mods add ins sticking. him transitioning world's but his body retains the qsmp extras. so him going into a vanilla world with double the health and maybe a bunch of rare shit depending on if he warps with his items or not (I thinkkkkk he might bc he has the scythe but that could be an exception :O) it'd be cool to see him with a bunch of high tech and insane level utilities in a base world and needing to be hit twice as hard and fights lasting twice as long to even do some damage to him. (also funny and angsty the idea of him having the auto fill backpack and other players reactions to him dying repeatedly over and over again and the totems just constantly popping and popping. him shouting as if the pain is nothing but a normal adrenaline rush for him knowing damn well the effects of over-totem consumption is hurting :D!! i wonder if anyone would noticeeeeeeeeee whump whomp)

OKAY THIS, THIS IS WHAT I‘VE THOUGHT ABOUT KINDA A BIT
So my current idea kind of.. consists out of the two ideas you‘ve mentioned? Let me explain :
SMPEarth isn’t entirely 'vanilla', though instead of mods they did have a couple of plugins iirc ( shaking the planes and airstrikes KAJSJ ). So even then, there‘s still a lot of differences between their worlds.
qEtoiles does keep majority of his things from whatever he had on him when he was thrown into the different world, an example being his Scythe.
This means he does have a variety of rare items, tech and much more that the others don‘t have. However what we would consider his health & stamina do get reduced - it‘s not quite noticeable at first as the world hasn‘t fully recognised Etoiles presence just yet, hence why it doesn’t affect him instantly. The reason for that is the corrupted code part of him, aka. his arm.
The code monsters that are also within the world already also haven‘t been hit with it because they are basically 'viruses' in the world and have gone unseen. Etoiles will be hit with the reduce rather sooner than later as he‘s not entirely corrupted like the actual code monsters.
Regarding the totem thing, I do have a headcanon that aeTechno is similar on that level in the world. Just a little less extreme as he doesn’t have the auto fill thing - but aePhil has seen him tank attacks with repeatedly popping totems during multiple battles they‘ve participated in and seen the effects it has. aePhil on the other hand prefers to fight with no totems at all and keep his hands free - he‘s more used to standing at the sidelines and away, but he will not hesitate at diving into or leading a battle if ever needed. I‘d imagine that with Etoiles he‘d just straight up go 'oh god, not another one' / JOKING
I‘ll go more into this later maybe, but I like the idea of aeEmerald Duo having a deeper history with each other from even before the Antarctic Empire. This is where the silly immortal stuff comes into play, that Etoiles will eventually find out about :D
TLDR :
Modded items from the QSMP will mostly stay in the world of what is technically SMPEarth, however any buffs ( such as health & stamina ) will eventually be fixed by 'the system‘ they have there once the world recognised Etoiles presence. Yes, it will be painful as hell when it does hit - he‘s basically tanking hits with no physical attacker and no actual injuries. Just pure phantom pain. The only way he can 'heighten' his stamina and stuff to a constant state again is through working it back up manually with practice & all.
A couple of blocks, etc. from the QSMP have already found their way into the SMPEarth world via world corruption - the Antarctic Empire has had a couple of run ins with a few code monsters probably before they met Etoiles, hence why aePhil is even less trusting for a while as he sees the corrupted arm.
My current idea is also that aePhil & aeTechno originally met Etoiles near an oddly corrupted looking waystone they had been traveling out to to take a look at. They weren‘t quite expecting another person to appear-

He does, but he doesn't think it's something that is a specific point it was lost all at once. He lost it gradually, the more time went on and the more he learned of the world and the place in it he'd been born into. As far as what point in his life he feels it'd been fully lost, probably his father's expulsion.

Laxus doesn't consider himself particularly brave. He doesn't think of himself as a coward, either, he's just sort of average in his own estimation. To others it's likely different, as he's always seen moving to the defense of others instead of himself, but he doesn't see that as bravery -- it's just doing the only logical thing for the situation.
Knowingly doing what he did after his fight with Tempester would probably be what I'd categorize as his bravest moment, one of them. Right behind it being...Alvarez arc, just in general. (and that's also for a lot of FT characters, Alvarez arc was a horrible situation for them to end up in.)
iris : if your muse could convey one last message to someone they have lost or left behind , what would it be ?
Oh the questions that are gonna cause me physical pain, okay.
He'd immediately be able to indicate that he wanted to send a message to his mother, but he would agonize over what the message actually is. There are so many things he's thought, felt, wanted over the years, so many questions he never got the chance to ask, stories he could tell. In the end, he would simply say 'I miss you.'

Yeah! readmore for post length
Gilbert's eyesight and skin sensitivity are complications from his albinism. the NIH says that lack of melanin tends to cause several issues:
poor eyesight – either short-sightedness or long-sightedness, and low vision (sight loss that cannot be corrected)
astigmatism – where the cornea (clear layer at the front of the eye) is not perfectly curved or the lens is an abnormal shape, causing blurred vision (mood!)
photophobia – where the eyes are sensitive to light
nystagmus – where the eyes move involuntarily from side to side, causing reduced vision; you do not see the world as "wobbling" because your brain adapts to your eye movement
squint – where the eyes point in different directions
vulnerability to sunburn, inability to tan
Those are, to my knowledge, very very very common with albinism and I wish they'd be depicted more because there's such a contrast between how albinism is treated in fiction vs irl. Fictional albino characters are usually considered exotic and glamorous whereas people with albinism irl are often shunned, and imo part of the reason for the contrast is that fiction sanitizes the condition (gives them dark eyelashes and brows, doesn't depict unfocused eyes etc) so that the characters are .... basically not disabled. often fictional portrayals of albinism just totally ignore the aspects that make it a disability rather than an oddity.
regarding Gilbert, something very strange I've noticed is that back in Ye Olden Days, it actually wasn't super unusual to see depictions of Gilbert's albinism as having some sort of effect on him (whether it be social or physical, and running the gamut from minor inconvenience to significantly disabling) but I nowadays I just never see it acknowledged at all. that's so strange to me. which is a shame, because you'd think it'd have a significant impact on him, whether that means in his Teutonic days - especially pre-Prussia, where he would've been running around the Levant in all the sunshine and heat that entails - or Kingdom of Prussia and onward. like presumably Gilbert has good reason to be Less Than Thrilled about things like, for example, the popular rise of eugenics.
my thoughts on Yao's disability are more tentative, mostly because unlike Gilbert's albinism, Yao's disability isn't congenital; if anything, Yao has the same problem Arthur has in that centuries upon centuries of injury, misuse while recovering and thus healing incorrectly etc have left him with permanent mobility issues that affect him even when he forms a completely new body. specifically for Yao, it's his shoulder that's fucked up- he can't lift his arm further than parallel to the ground, and even doing that is a struggle for him as it is. the rest of his arm isn't much better and he routinely suffers from muscle weakness and pain, though his shoulder is the biggest issue.
a big problem for Yao is that not having full use of his shoulder completely destroyed his ability to use a bow and arrow, which really fucked with him because my headcanon is that Yao is considered one of the single best archers in history. I'm playing with the idea that his shoulder issues are actually something that contributed heavily to the advent of early firearms; if he can't pull a bowstring, maybe he can still aim a hand cannon? not sure about the success on that and it's entirely likely early firearms just worsened his injuries. whoops. but I do really like the idea as it acknowledges that a lot of inventions came to be as a result of someone trying to accommodate for their disability or that or a loved one.
(Obligatory but important side-note: POC with albinism get significantly worse social ostracization and fetishization than people who would still be considered white without their condition. There are a lot of reasons for this, and it's worth pointing out because the albinism does not make a POC count as "white" - at least in current American culture - even if they're literally white due to lack of melanin, and the because race is a historically-contingent social construct and not determined by genetics etc etc. this has nothing to do with hetalia or Gilbert except that I thought I'd mention it while I was on the subject.)

Hi!! I was wondering if Surgat's demon kind was like.... A closed species? (Gonna be honest I don't know how that closed species thing even works exactly) BUT basically I've been wanting to create a demon oc design of my own that'd be like Surgat but I wanted to know if that would be okay, and if there'd be any rules of any kind attached to it? 👉👈

appearance related:
they actually DO have two horns, surgat was just born with one. feel free to give yours one or two, up to you!! one is considered rare.
horns can vary in curve and size, just as long as its coming directly out of the temple area like surgat's, and should match skin color. (I hope that makes sense ahh)
your OC can have any skintone of your choosing. surgat's skin is just very pale bc there's no sun on the planet anymore!
they all have Claws, the color is yours to decide
the tail is essentially a prehensile hand-like appendage. they can vary a bit in shape and size, as long as there's a hand-ish shape going on!
surgat has some glowy bits, like the inside of his mouth is blue and glows! you can incorporate this if you choose
on the glitter topic... for consistency's sake the species as a whole probably has skin/hair that sheds glitter-like stuff from them. however, if you don't want your OC sparkling like mine, I won't get onto you about it
they have sharp canines (fangs) and some individuals fangs are larger than others
there's no standard eye color so go for whatever you want! however I think it'd be cool if they all had that ring of a secondary color of your choosing (like how surgat's is gold) but you don't Have to follow that
I know all my guys tend to wear suits but feel free to have your OC rock whatever clothes you want :D
any body type you like, feel free to make them trans, give them body/facial hair, birth marks, tattoos, piercings, etc
powers:
this species has an "aura" that they can separate from themselves and manipulate into objects of their choosing. these objects would glow and typically be the color you choose as their scheme, so surgat's objects would be solid blue, but yours could be green, pink, etc.
basically the aura is a manifestation of your character's Power. every demon is built different, so some are stronger than others.
every individual can "exert" their aura if they choose, and the stronger they are, the more pressure is felt in the air. at extreme levels, this can cause pain and immobilization to others around that person.
this is basically demons' way of showing off to each other hey, I'm the fucking strong. so it all depends on how powerful you want your character to be!
other demon species/types in my OC-universe CANNOT manipulate their auras into shapes like surgat's kind can. they are unique in this
I'm aware this sounds very shounen-anime-ey but I started building this lore when I was in highschool LOL
lore of the species:
they lived in symbiosis with another species called "false angels" on a very lush and forested planet.
surgat's kind are slow to heal from wounds, and false angels, while not angels, can still heal others.
however, false angels are weak physically, so surgat's kind served as protectors to them.
because of some other complicated lore event, the sun went out on surgat's planet. after this, hungry and violent creatures born from shadow took over, and as a result, surgat is technically the last of his kind.
however, we're gonna ignore that last part because I want anyone who wants to to be able to create their very own surgat-demon <3
general stuff:
they can live a long time! surgat is around 370 but they can prob be up to around 1,000 in age
you can name your OC however you like! there's no rule for it
