reasons to watch rise: this scene between splinter and donnie.
i debated cutting this clip down but i couldn't bring myself to not include the entire thing. donnie's reaction to being lied to by his dad is so raw and splinter actually fuckin apologizing to him without turning his feelings into a joke - this show is a downright masterpiece.
btw if i make kaveh say "oh my god" pls imagine him say that EXACTLY the way his english VA does bc its always stuck in my head with how funny and perfect it is ajkcjkab
NO other show in existence understands sister dynamics better than fleabag. especially from the perspective of older sisters i believe. having the same character yell "...you're fine! you'll always be fine. you'll always be interesting, with your quirky cafe and your dead best friend. you just make me feel like i've failed," AND "the only person i'd run through an airport for is you" !!!!!!!!! it's insane and it's exactly how i feel
dude I’m not even a spuffy girlie but the way he fucking looks at her and talks to her in “after life”?!! there is so much genuine love there, so much development in the way he sees her and the way he feels about her. that is NOT the same person who tied her up in “crush”. THAT IS NOT A PERSON WHO WOULD FUCKING ASSAULT HER SEASON 6 WRITERS I AM IN YOUR WALLS
Thinking about how few shits Stede gives about the distress of the crew really makes the bathtub scene hit even fucking harder like Lucius keeled over in front of him and he was just annoyed fuckery rehearsal was interrupted but Ed has a flashback and panics and he breaks open his own fucking door and sinks to his knees beside him and says Ed’s name in the tenderest voice and I am oN fIrE
Oh you’re dying Lucius? Inconvenient and rude. Ed is upset?!?! Fuckery, what fuckery ARE YOU OK EDWARD would you feel better if I tell you that you’re good at maiming people please don’t cry I’ll forgive you for planning to murder me I’ll do anything to stop you looking so desperately sad let me just touch you gently let me make it better
nothing more cringe than coaxing and half-forcing someone to go to the movies with you because you're talking up how good the last one in the series was and then they finally agree to go and then it ends up being over two hours long and also kinda the worst 😬
Good adaptations aren't scene by scene, line by line reenactments of a book. It's a completely different medium, that the creators can use to tell the story a different way. Besides budget issues (just writing a scene where a bunch of crazy stuff happens costs about $0, while portraying it on screen is a different matter), the pacing/flow is different in live action stuff than books.
The SPIRIT of the adaptation is what matters. The original PJO movies weren't bad because Annabeth's hair was brown or they didn't say the dialogue straight from the book or dare I argue, because they mixed in elements from further in the series. Rather, it was bad because the vibe was simply far too edgy. Percy was sassy, it did have humor, monsters were fine, but it fell flat on its face because it didn't understand its characters, its world, or its TONE. THE TONE. It was genuinely awful.
Good adaptations expand on the source material without losing the charm of the original. They understand what makes characters tick and what's at the core of the journey, its not about aesthetics or being faithful to the point of being dull and having nothing new to say.
The PJO series is doing that. Having Rick involved probably helped a lot. It has a rocky start, in my opinion. But from the second half of ep. 2 and into ep. 3, I see it gaining its footing.
the cruellest thing arcane ever did was show me, personally, a friendly axolotl the size of a small car and safe to hug without hurting her, and then immediately rip her away again
if dorian didn't show up, do you think louis would have shot minnie?
I do. I know some people think either he wouldn't have or he would've missed so that's why the writers had him shoot Dorian instead, but mmmmmm no, I don't personally think so. I like to think that if he had taken the shot, his shaky hands would've caused him to shoot her fatally.
Mostly because I'm already so normal about the fact that of the Ericson crew, Marlon and Louis are the only ones with a body count. Well, that we know of, but shown to us in the game, at least. Plus, we know it's Louis' first kill.
Like yeah, Clementine and AJ become part of the crew and they have bigger body counts, and if we're counting indirect kills caused by actions, then Tenn has a count... and I guess everyone has blood on their hands for blowing up the boat... but I'm talking about killed directly with a weapon like....... I lied, I'm not normal about that at all, Louis and Marlon are the ones who have killed someone in Louis' route. I'm also not normal about the fact that Louis kills Dorian and then even as he's clearly in shock, he tries to go with Clementine to get AJ, and then later on when they talk about it, he says it feels like bile but not quite and he's glad he has it in him to do it.... listen, listen, listen... I'm obsessed with that.
Anyway, so if Louis shot Minerva, I think he would've accidentally killed her and can you imagine? He's already enough of a mess after killing the woman who pinned him down and tried to cut his finger off [or succeeded] but he knew Minerva, they were friends before the twins were taken. Even Violet couldn't kill her even though that would've been the smarter thing to do, and we know thanks to meta knowledge that killing her would've saved lives, but Violet couldn't, and I don't think Louis would intentionally either.
Speaking of Violet, if Louis killed Minerva, I hate to think about what that would've done to Vi. I think she might've actually left at that point, like what was planned before it got changed to her being burned. I don't think she would've attacked Louis over it, though, like yeah she attacked Clementine in the cell but Louis? I don't know, but I don't think so just because it's Louis and he'd be a mess about it anyway.
Though if he did kill her, it would be a neat parallel to draw... y'know, because Louis forgave AJ for killing Marlon even though he was pissed and heartbroken, and Violet was annoyed with him the entire time... but could she ever forgive Louis for killing Minerva? Y'know? We already have a similar parallel with AJ shooting Tenn, but still.
If Clementine killed Minerva in that moment, though, then I could see Violet attacking her since in her eyes, Clem proved her right.
So yeah, I get why they added the Dorian kill to his route. It adds another compelling element to Louis as a character, but we also need Minerva alive for episode 4; Louis can't kill her, he can't miss, and he's not going to stay with her because we need Violet to stay on the boat and him to be on shore for all routes.
I’m going to be so real- the next person I see who says “the SA scene is bad bc he’s all dressed up in sexy clothes and dancing to a pop song with his assault happening in the bkg” I’m going to LOSE IT! WHERE IS THE MEDIA LITERACY??? DO WE TAKE EVERYTHING AT FACE VALUE NOW???
And can I remind everyone that the clip is 10 SECONDS LONG, and it’s over halfway through the song (based off of the lyrics). We have no idea what was shown before or after the leak.
From what I’ve seen- The scene is SUPPOSED to be a heavy contrast between the sexual persona he puts on and the pain he actually feels/is going through. The flashes of his assault are just that- flashbacks. Many survivors have expressed that, from what we’ve seen, they experience flashbacks in a very similar way. And this all is as he is ACTIVELY singing about the pain he is in- and he expresses more and more of that pain through the lyrics as the song goes on. It’s jarring to me that people didn’t think about it for more than five seconds before saying that it’s bad (in that sense- as I’ve said before, some people interpreted the scene different because of who worked on it and that’s okay).
There are multiple instances of SA survivors releasing songs about their experience that would be upbeat/ more pop-like AND the accompanying music videos being them dressed in a very similar fit/aesthetic and dancing to it. Aside from the more jarring/contrasting visuals- Poison is no different here. But the added visuals of the SA are what tells the audience of the show what Angel is going through- people are meant to feel uncomfortable by it.
As someone who is NOT an SA survivor- I’m glad that the show is going to be blunt with it. I have no idea what survivors go/have gone through and this scene, while heartbreaking and brutal, does help me understand others more. I didn’t know that situations can get THAT brutal. And that may be naive of me, but at least I’m learning. Even this controversy helped me realize that no two survivors are the same/cope the same way, like most things, these experiences are a spectrum. It may not be to your personal taste- that’s fine. But we cannot keep talking as if it does not benefit other people- or, in better words, make them feel seen.
Here’s a refresher of how Asmo and Solomon forged their pact.
Spoilers for lesson 7
Welp. That’s that.
He was not forced or manipulated into a pact in NB. He wanted to forge a pact, he literally says so.
This pact is a huge part in Asmo fully accepting he’s a demon. By saying he was manipulated into this pact you’re taking a ton of Asmo’s agency as a character away.
