danny is damian’s older brother au; reincarnation type. danyal is the soft-hearted but still exemplary heir, but convinces ra’s that it is better to have him be the right-hand to damian, losing his heirship. ra’s, having danny as his favourite (cough danny and his inability to not be involved with old creeps lmao) allows him this; thinking that it’d allow danyal to be protected and also give him another option for youth (taking over damian’s body, afo-shigaraki style /hj)

this is all fine and dandy until ra’s decides damian has reached an equal skill to danyal’s stagnant training, and sets up a fight to the death. the lazarus pits are always there for the al ghul family, after all. he expects danyal to win. he expects damian to learn that all of his children are disposable. precious, but tools for ra’s’ use (all except precious danyal, the heart that kept giving).

danyal dies, damian’s sword stabbed into his heart, his last advice to “drive it in harder.” and his last words, “congratulations, brother.”

they bring him to lazarus pit, but it takes him. he sinks into the pool of acrid green and they wait; hours. a day. a week. he doesn’t resurface. they continue waiting because what else are they to do? they are al ghuls, not danal. not precious danyal who could mourn.

this proceeds, a sigil at the pit’s edge once a month, waiting for the lost son to return; but eventually damian is brought before the bat (far less dramatic, ra’s was tired of damian’s growing frustration without danyal to soothe him but no assassin’s had the same emotional state as danyal to provide a pseudo-sibling to play the same role; thus the bats’ family was the next option)

the bats only find out abt danyal when damian sets up for a day of fasting, facing the direction of the pit.

it’s dick who asks why he is fasting, and damian explains calmly. They learn of the boy who knew kindness, of the al ghul’s heart, of the prodigal heir turned advisor to damian. they learn of damian’s brother. when they find out why he’s dead, horror drips down their spines, at damian being forced to kill someone who’d only done good for him.

damian has one thing to say; “Danyal’s advice was not ‘how to kill’. i killed far better than he, after all. i was efficient, but danyal worked cleaner. Danyal’s advice… was ‘to kill your heart.’”

time moves on; damian is adjusted to ‘outside life’ far easier, danyal taught him how to interact with others and understand that words are rarely literal. the lazarus pits are quiet, madness unlikely in those brought from it, and jason affected far less in the long term. until one day there is a knock at the manor door.

alfred opens it, to see a dark haired young adult, assassins’ garb, injured. he does not seem conscious. alfred brings him in; calling the rest to reach a decision on how to treat him, and what his intentions are.

Damian wakes up to the sight of his brother in the moment that damian killed him.

NO NO NO NO NO NONONONONO!

They weren't supposed to find out, at least, not like this.

His heart, which just a few moments ago wasn't beating at all, is now beating too fast, too loud, too strong.

He wants to move, to say something, to do something, but he can't. His lungs are still empty, so he starts breathing, too short, too fast.

This isn't good. They're not supposed to know, not supposed to see.

How could he let this happen? Why did he even agree to this stupid sleepover? Now they're all going to know.

All of them?

Panic creeps into his mind. What if he finds out? He can't find out.

He takes a look around the room, Dick is holding him, and he says something that Jason can't hear. Damian looks scared and on the verge of tears. Tim is in the corner holding Cass's hand, trying to reassure her that everything is alright, even if he doesn't believe so himself. Steph and Duke aren't in the room. He has no idea where they could've gone. Barbara is on her laptop, probably searching for a course of action.

"... Just breathe in slowly. " he can finally make out what Dick is saying. So he does just that, trying to slow his breathing and heartbeat, using Dick's voice as both a guideline and an anchor.

It works. He can talk now. He pulls Damian into a hug, which Damian doesn't reject. "I'm alright, Baby Bird, I'm alright."

Damian starts sobbing into his arms. "Your heart, it stopped, and you, you weren't breathing and I, and I don't know what to do because I don't want you to die again!"

"I'm not. You guys aren't getting rid of me so easily," he jokes, then kisses Damian's head. Damian doesn't flinch or move away. He must be really concerned then.

Jason turns to Dick "what exactly happened?"

"Just like Damian said, your heart stopped, so did your breathing. Does this... Happen often?"

Jason nods. He's not sure what to say.

Then Tim speaks "What the actual fuck Todd?! You have any Idea how scared we were? Why didn't you say anything?"

Jason slowly gets up and goes to hug Tim. He can't seem to find the right words.

Tim pushes him away with a horrified expression. "Dude, you're freezing cold!"

Hearing that, Cass brings him the warmest blanket she can find. "No more cold," her warm smile is radiant, Jason wants to hug her but knows he shouldn't.

Barbara comes closer and helps wrap the blanket around him. She doesn't need to say anything.

Jason pulls her into a hug, then brings in Dick, Cass joins them soon after, and so do Tim and Damian.

It's not as cold anymore, Jason feels warmth spreading throughout his body.

After they let go of him, Jason finally pays some mind to the absence of people in the room.

"Where's Steph? And Where's Duke?"

Dick rubs the back of his neck. NO NO NONONO!!

"They went with Alfred to calm Bruce down."

NO! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!

Jason removes his grip from the blanket, letting it fall to the floor as he attempts to escape and leave the manor altogether, but the presence of a man in the doorway stops him in his tracks.

Jason takes a step back, and right before he manages to turn around and run for the window, two strong arms wrap around him, pulling him in for a hug.

And Jason fully breaks down.

Bruce holds him while he sobs and whimpers, giving him a moment to let everything out and calm down a little.

"It's alright, I'm still here. You're still here. We're still here." Bruce says, whether to Jason or himself, no one knows.

Jason can feel Bruce shaking. He tries to grasp the fact that Bruce cares and wants him around. Tries to process that Bruce was scared, terrified of the thought of Jason dying again.

Jason takes notice of the tears running down Bruce's face, moving his hand up to gently wipe them away.

"I'm still here, old man, I'm not dying again."

That's the last thing he says before he allows himself to relax and hug Bruce back, after mouthing a quick "thank you" to Stephanie, Duke, and Alfred, knowing he's wanted and loved by his family.

The season one dynamic is so important to me because you watch the first episode and you’re like “they’re gonna bone” even though they don’t really trust each other and its just this first time field agent who knows exactly what shes doing in theory but has never actually experienced any if this and this vetted agent who was renown for his profiles with violent crimes who every just thinks is crazy but the take each other so seriously from the get go and why the fuck are they standing that close to each other and then at the end of the season (which i estimate to be about a years worth of time) scully, who holds her job and success over everything else, is ready to lose her job to protect Mulder and he is mostly ready to give up the xfiles (in name atleast, you cant really have mulder without the xfiles) for the same reason.

its been so weird rewatching tenth doctor episodes after getting diagnosed with autism earlier this year cos like as a kid, and even later as an adult, i had no idea whatsoever that ten was actually kinda rude, apparently. like he can be perceived as arrogant and he says and does things that are off-putting and his companions often have to give him looks or apologise on his behalf or explain his behaviour to others.

ive seen a few people point stuff like this out more recently as reasons for not liking his character which im fairly certain is the only reason ive noticed it this time round. and im pretty sure this might actually be part of the reason ive always loved him and connected with him so much tho cos apparently i also say the wrong things and come across as arrogant and i had absolutely no idea about that either until very very recently.

there’s a social awkwardness to him that i had no idea i was even connecting with all this time. little ten year old me just thought he was the coolest guy in the world.

Mulder's Love Story, S1 (Part 2): Mulder Shifts from Prizing Scully to Wanting Her to Prize Him

My meta thoughts below~

Space, Fallen Angel, and Eve were more focused on case solving than relationship building; but Fire is drenched with characterization. Mulder gets caught up in Phoebe's games, despite warning himself and Scully against them; and ends up relying on his partner's friendship (possessiveness born from protection, not jealousy-- discussed briefly here) to see him through the emotional upheaval. By the end of this episode, Mulder's delighted (as is Scully) when any attachments he'd still harbored for his ex are gone so that he and his pal Watson can continue to chum along unperturbed.

Beyond the Sea exposes how deeply Scully has gotten under Mulder's skin-- using Dana twice, following her around closely, and trying to get into her head (without trespassing) to understand Scully's swift shifts and all-encompassing grief. He also begins to employ the advance-retreat method with regards to pushing Scully's limited beliefs: accepting where his partner will or won't, can or can't believe as long as she doesn't abandon him in his pursuit Truth. Beyond the Sea also serves as THE shift in their dynamic: Mulder goes from hands-on to emotions engaged fully on Scully. This pattern continues full force the rest of the season-- though it isn't a symptom of love (yet), just deep appreciation.

Gender Bender and Lazarus are key in two aspects: Mulder's tenderness remains and amplifies; and his professional jealousy shifts from valuing Scully above all others to wanting her to value him above all others (getting irrationally peeved when she trusts a random man so quickly in the first episode and grin-and-bearing-it while she reminisces about her ex in the second.) The "Dana" from Beyond the Sea lingers, too; but Mulder tucks it away again when Scully doesn't respond more than to her usual moniker. And Mulder continues his advance-retreat, respecting and meeting Scully where her limitations are (he will soon use this in their budding romantic relationship for the next four years, except he advances to joke but retreats when the moment turns serious.)

Young at Heart serves as an excellent post-episode to Squeeze (Scully being the focused target of the antagonist in her own home) and an excellent foundation for the episode Pusher (Mulder struggling with his instinct to shoot-- in this case to call the shot; with Modell to not do so-- and he and Scully watching over their hospitalized criminal together.) It's also another reminder of how little Mulder talks about himself or his past: other than the bare essentials, Scully knows no one-- his past partners, his past work partners, his mentors, his past cases, even his family (whereas Scully keeps Mulder informed about her whereabouts-- i.e. The Jersey Devil trips, the beginning of Roland, A Christmas Carol, Chinga, etc.) Mulder also shows how much he trusts and deeply cares for his partner, convinced she could pull off the setup, keep her wits about her while getting shot, and be capable enough to enable him to recapture the MOTW.

partywithponies I think it was very shallow as well in that it was almost entirely Life on Mars with barely any Ashes to Ashes to it at all, and coincidentally, Ashes to Ashes isn't as well known overseas. It didn’t feel for the fans, it just felt like what they thought would sell better. Poor Shaz didn't even get a single vague reference the entire event, and Alex, the literal third main character of the franchise, got one passing moment in the entire pilot.

I agree to some extent - they definitely went for what they felt would have the most recognition value. I do however think that they at least set up quite a bit of Alex involvement, seeing as she's the one who hits Sam and Gene in 2024 (or at least it's heavily implied that it's her). As for Shaz, I have to be cynical and say that with Matt and Ashley being old white men... they've probably forgotten about her and/or don't think she's important. Unfortunately.

Either way, I guess we can both agree that it's a good thing Lazarus isn't getting made as a TV show haha!

On a personal note, thank you all for your warm reactions to my little report :') I have to admit I was a bit trepidatious about posting it because of my (and our) negative feelings about it, as contrasted to what Fern and I perceived as a really enthusiastic response from the audience that was present...
