We bought An Old House, and it has more issues wrong with it than we thought, but one of the more hilarious things, you can see easily, is all the Landlord Paint job around the house. 

Like truly terrible did not try levels of paint job in some places. 

Also, only 3 of the 10 windows upstairs opens. Several have the rope cut and others are just... sealed shut? Not sure.  All of the closets are terrible, and the downstairs bathroom is something frightening.

The Green House Review

Thank you to Netgalley for providing this ARC for me to read and review.

I enjoyed The Green House a lot and would recommend it, with some trigger warnings: miscarriage and alcoholism.

The story itself was very touching and I felt connected to both Girard and his daughter Stacey. Anyone who has lost someone close to them will be able to identify with Girard and Stacey’s different expressions of grief. Girard retreats into his greenhouse and compares his current tragedy to another one, 37 years removed. It is satisfying to watch Girard and Stacey repair their strained relationship through their shared sadness, and bond over the flowers in the greenhouse. The flowers themselves add symbolism throughout the story, which in my opinion enhances the experience of the narrative.

The parts of this book I enjoyed less was Lawton’s writing style. It was too simple for me, but that is not to say it was bad, it’s just a personal preference. There is also a heavy dose of Christian morality within the narrative, which I thought could have been more subtly done. The way it stands feels heavy handed and preachy.

This is a short book and will fly past. There is never a dull moment and has some well-timed surprises.

"People like you are so rare, did you know that?" He spoke, while tending to his still growing buttercups.

Henry didn't know what to say. Instead of addressing it, he continued on with his task- feeding the fishes in the tiny pond that's placed in the middle of the garden.

Mr. Hitoshi chuckled.

"Tell me boy, is there a gaping hole in your heart? Is that why you help people without a second thought? To fill the emptiness?"

The look of confusion on Henry's face seems to be all the answer that Mr. Hitoshi needed.

He gazed at Henry with a look of understanding. This boy is like a daisy. Growing in world that may want to pluck him away from his home, hurting him in the process.

"How about you?" Henry queried.

Mr Hitoshi stopped whatever he was doing, thinking of a respond.

"Well, I used to be just like you, full of hope and faithful towards humanity. But, as I grow older, I understand that the world isn't sugar, spice and everything nice. What happened, changed me greatly"

His shoulder went slack as he recalls pas events, the deeds that's been done.

Breathing out a sigh, he continued on with whatever he was doing, as if the moment of vulnerability never happened.

But something doesn't sit right at Henry's end. Mr Hitoshi seems like he needed to be comforted but Henry isn't exactly the greatest in that department, so he's not sure what to say.

However, he's always good at one thing, distractions.

"Uhm, did you know one of the flower meanings of a buttercup is humility?"

Mr Hitoshi smiled at the attempt, "Really now? Do tell"
