TROPED TIMELOOP — Round One!

Hey, Tropesters! Welcome to the very first round of TROPED TIMELOOP! All of the prompts for this event will feature the Time Loop Trope! The Writing Period for Round One starts NOW, and will be on a rolling basis, with a new TIMELOOP Prompt dropping about every twenty-three (23) days! While the OFFICIAL writing period for Round One goes for three weeks, you can submit a fic based on this prompt until the end of the event in September and it will still be included in voting! Be sure to include the theme, tropes, and timeloops into your fic.

For Round One, please write a fic that includes:

The third flash of realization comes unexpected, one late-night where he's bathing them. He had to drag them there, — out into the common showers. They would have stayed in their room for another day, signing off papers and permissions, hadn’t he done so.

“Oi”, he’d asked, soon as he’d opened the door. “How long has it been?”

Hanji’d barely looked up at him.

“My brain’s fried, Levi.”, they’d sighed, as they ran their fingers through their hair. Good thing he didn’t even need to be specific. “I can barely remember my own name by now.”

He’d nodded.

“More of a reason to get moving, then.”

Now, mercurial blue hours twinkle in the haze between dusk and morning. Hanji’s bare before him, and the pale moonshine traces contours on their body. They’re concave and convex, frail and strong. All too swift, all at once. Levi can’t help but find shapes upon their back, — like he’s connecting dots between muscle and scar. A planet, a cloud. He pretends that he’s a painter. That each stroke of light and shadow brings his work to life.

He lathers up soap between his hands. Water ripples at each one of his movements, as he washes down their neck, their nape, their shoulders. He’s careful handling them, — he always has been. There’s a part of him that feels that Hanji’s made of glass, — that a single blow could shatter them to pieces. They don’t need the extra pressure— the world puts enough on them already. It’s why he holds them with sheer delicacy— as if they’re Erwin’s vase, and he’s trying to bring their broken back to earth. Not everyone gets to see the softer sides of him, but Hanji; — Hanji’s different. They understand him— simple and complex as that. Everyone else is intimidated by his presence, and yet they tease him for being clean-cut. Will say titans don’t shit just to play around with him.

His fingers trickle down their spine, their waist; shy, meticulous. As if all his endings have turned to sea-foam. They have a secret pact. A tacit agreement that goes unexplored, untouched in moments like these, where they’re too hush and helpless. They don’t ask him why he does all of this for them, and he never speaks the two words that would give them enough of an answer.

“You stank, you know.”, he says, instead. His voice’s sweet, but then he stops himself.

He can feel bone under his palms. Sharp, and fierce and rigid. He doesn’t recall it being there before, the last time he’d bathed them. Sure, Hanji had always been skinny; tall, and with a languid frame. Still, it was never like this. It was never this bad. He would know. He’d engraved each scrap of them into his heart before.

When was the last time he’d even seen them eat?

He clears his throat, and swallows hard, and lets out a sigh. He can count each vertebra that pokes from under the skin. It seems that, beneath the shadows, they’re different phases of the moon: one crescent, one full. There’s little muscle in sight; only the thinness of flesh. The tough realization that this is all it’s come down to.

“Hanji…”

They tell him nothing back. They don’t wish to talk about it, and he knows better than to push them further. All of a sudden, it’s like they’re a kid who’s been caught red-handed. A famous criminal found at the theft scene.

It does make Levi’s soul shrink, — to watch them like this, all too small; knees pulled to their chest. They used to shine with every color in the rainbow; a whisp of bright and vibrant. Now, they’re only rain. Nothing but the cracks on a porcelain vase; no liquid gold to glue them back together.

He gets up from the chair he’s in, goes fetch for a warm, fluffy towel. Hanji stands up to their full height, and covers up their breasts with their hands, but he can see it, still. Their weak build, the protuberances on their hips and ribs. For a moment, it almost looks like they’ll bend and fall. Like water will weigh them down, and they’re not sturdy enough to carry themselves to make it.

He’s worried sick about them. Oh, God forbid, he’s so, so worried. He doesn’t understand, — how could he be this selfish; much too focused on his own pain to even notice Hanji’s.

“I’m cold.”, they whisper, barely audible.

And when he wraps them up in cloth, at last, beaming with all the love that he’s capable of, he can only promise himself one thing:

He won’t let them disappear. He can’t. He’ll never.

He won’t let Hanji Zoe become cracks on porcelain.

I have a burning curiosity that can only be relieved by an OFMD author. Why is there so much AU fanfiction in this fandom?? 😆 My AO3 search results with every alternate universe tag I can think of blocked are coming up with almost every result on the page filtered out! 🤣 I have nothing against them existing and I'm all for everyone writing what makes them happy, I just wonder how this fandom ended up being so full of them. I used to think SPN was oversaturated with AU's, but it can't hold a candle to OFMD! 😅

okay i wanted to give this a proper answer and also asked a few other authors, so here are some of the reasons we came up with - i think it's a combination of all of these:

while the show takes place in a historical setting, it's not historically accurate or even trying to be. it uses anachronistic dialogue and gives piracy a vibe more like a modern workplace. the characters become timeless in the sense that they are already "modern" characters put into a historical setting, and therefore fit just as well into any kind of AU setting. the characters are what make up the show more than the historical setting

the themes that the show deals with - relationships, sexuality, gender, trauma, family, self-image, mental illness - can be explored in so many different ways given different settings. it's very interesting to examine how the characters would deal with them when thrown into different circumstances and time periods

canon is really good, so while there are gaps in the narrative that can be explored, a lot of people are drawn to putting the characters in entirely different situations and/or feel like canon ground was covered pretty quickly

the story itself translates to other universes very easily. people want to enjoy that story and/or their favorite plot points again and again, but just writing down the plot of the show in the canon setting wouldn't make much sense. by throwing the characters into a different universe, you can pull scenes and plot from canon without just repeating it, putting a different spin on it

very few shows have (canonically) older queer people, and people like the idea of how that translates to other universes

we have (relatively) little canon and had a lot of time between seasons. considering the size of the fandom, amount of canon, and time since canon, the proportion of AUs is not surprising

if we assume proper tagging, AUs make up around 27% of all ofmd fanfics by number of works, but probably much more by word count, since a lot of canon fics tend to be shorter. in comparison, that number is around 20% for SPN and 34% for Merlin 🤷

also i've seen a lot of people starting out by only wanting to read canonverse fics until they gave an AU a try and BAM they were hooked 😌

Renegade 2023 Typeset Exchange: Regardless of the Hardships by Ehann

When I picked up a pinch-hit for @admiraltypress in this year's @renegadepublishing typeset exchange, and saw this SVSS fic on the list, it was JUST a few days after one of my fellow Renegade discord members has shared some really great public domain illustrations, and I knew exactly what I wanted to use for this one. I'm pretty happy with how the bamboo theme turned out!

Regardless of the Hardships is a canonverse AU where Shen Yuan transmigrated into the body of Mu Qingfang, peak lord of Qian Cao peak, instead. I've only read a smattering of SVSS fic so far, and this slow-burn was a fun one to dive into!

And my favourite silly little detail in all of my recent typesets is the post-it note on the summary page, pulled from the tags. (I'd stuck it in on a whim right before I closed the file to go off and do other things, and promptly forgot all about it. When I came back and saw it again, I was entertained all out of proportion to the situation. Sometimes I'm easily amused.)

Normally confined to her apartment on weekends, she had ventured out today in an attempt to escape the relentless headache that had plagued her for the past two days. It wasn't an illness but rather a persistent sleeplessness that had left her head throbbing.

Who is this Levi?

The eerie feeling of familiarity that accompanied the name lingered, as if she had met him somewhere before. Dismissing it, she continued her walk. Whoever Levi was, she resolved to deal with him—or forget about him—later.

A few steps later, she abruptly halted, inexplicably drawn to an antique shop she had never entered before. While she often passed by it on her way to work, she had never ventured inside. Yet today, an inner impulse guided her through its doors.

As she explored the store, her eyes danced over an array of beautifully preserved items—pottery, vintage furniture, memorabilia, and more. It was remarkable how these artifacts from bygone eras still retained their original charm and pristine condition.

Guided by an unseen force, she eventually reached the counter where a slightly worn-out box captured her attention. In bold marker, it read, "25 cents each." Curiosity piqued, she peeked inside and found it filled with a multitude of old photographs.

"See anything you like, dear?" the shop owner inquired.

"Just looking, Ma'am," she replied with a warm smile.

The owner nodded, "Feel free to browse at your leisure."

Thanking her, she selected two photographs. The first depicted a young woman, radiant in her wedding dress, while the other captured the same woman and a military man sharing an affectionate smile. The love evident in their eyes was undeniable.

Leafing through the stack, she couldn't help but smile at the love story that unfolded before her. These photographs painted a tale of a couple's romance from the 1940s, evoking dreams of an enduring love. The images strangely reminded her of Levi.

…Levi?

That enigmatic name returned, flooding her thoughts once more.

"I love you," he whispered in her dream, his eyes locked onto hers in the dim light of their surroundings. Her fingers tenderly brushed through his hair, gently tucking it behind his ear. "I love you too," she replied breathlessly, the aftermath of their passionate encounter still lingering in the air.

Tomorrow marked the day they would reclaim Wall Maria, and they had seized this precious moment to be together before the impending battle.

The memory from her dream played on a loop in her mind, and she couldn't help but be unsettled by the persistent presence of this man named Levi. She had never encountered anyone with raven hair and a stern yet handsome countenance—certainly not in her waking life.

"Levi…" she murmured incredulously.

The rain poured relentlessly, drenching her surroundings. There he lay, her beloved, covered in blood and surrounded by shards of wood from a nearby explosion. He looked lifeless. Kneeling beside him, she cradled his head and drew him close, silent tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Would you look at that, our biggest threat is covered in his own blood," Floch muttered from behind. "Let's shoot him in the head," another soldier suggested.

"He's dead," Hange declared. Her eyes met Hange's, and the unspoken understanding between them led her to maintain her silence, her gaze unwaveringly fixed on Levi.

"He was caught in a Thunder Spear explosion at point-blank range. Internally, he's in pieces," the soldiers explained. Floch insisted on checking Levi's pulse, but both she and Hange remained quiet. Before Hange could respond, a nearby Titan began to steam, revealing Zeke beneath it. The soldiers' attention quickly shifted, providing an opportunity for her, Hange, and Levi to slip away. They escaped, rescuing him from the brink of death.

"I have brought all the reports from Captain Levi, Ma'am," a cadet reported.

"Thank you, cadet. You're dismissed," the co-captain acknowledged.

With a salute, the cadet left, and the co-captain delved into the files, diligently tending to her captain's duties. Amidst the paperwork, a small folded paper slipped from one of the folders and landed on the floor.

She picked it up and unfolded it, revealing a heartfelt message. A soft smile graced her lips as she recognized the familiar handwriting.

"Don't overwork yourself and always stay hydrated.

I love you.

Levi."

It was the little gestures, the sweet notes, and loving sentiments that Levi conveyed that never failed to warm her heart and rekindle her love for him. She placed the love letter aside, alongside the other letters Levi had written, with the intention of showering him with affection after a long day. He unquestionably deserved it.

"Do you ever think about what you'd do when this is all over?" she asked Levi one day.

Levi was taken aback by the genuine question, pausing to contemplate his response. "Hmm," he began, "I'd like to build a Tea Shop."

"A Tea Shop?" she quizzically inquired.

"Yes," he replied, his gaze fixed on her, his voice a soft whisper, "and you'll be there."

Her eyes widened in slight astonishment at his sweet declaration, and then she smiled. She reached out, her fingers gently combing through his hair before caressing his soft cheek. "I'd like that, Levi," she whispered back. She leaned in for a kiss, and as they parted, she continued, "And we'll have a garden outside the Tea Shop, so customers can dine there too. Doesn't that sound wonderful?"

Levi chuckled softly at her unexpected enthusiasm. "It does," he concurred. He reached for her hands, bringing them to his lips and planting a tender kiss on her knuckles, his thumbs gently rubbing them. "We'll end this war, and we'll live in peace, together."

His sudden displays of affection never failed to melt her heart and renew her love for him.

"Together."

"Always."

Before Connie could turn to see who had called his name, a powerful shove from behind propelled him out of harm's way, narrowly avoiding an imminent Titan attack he hadn't seen coming. The young woman who had saved him was not so fortunate, as the Titan's teeth sank into her leg during her heroic act. She lost her balance, and in her fall, a claw sliced through her side, causing further injury.

As she plummeted to the ground, Levi caught her, having swiftly moved from a distant part of the battlefield. Gently laying her down, he assessed the extent of her injuries.

"Stay with me," his deep voice echoed.

Although her vision blurred, the voices were clear and distinct. Cries and screams surrounded them, creating a scene of utter chaos.

"Levi…" she whispered weakly, her lifeblood staining the earth beneath her.

In response, he knelt beside her, his expression a mask of concern and fear. He couldn't bear the thought of losing her. "I've got you. I'll bandage your wounds and get you out of the combat zone," he promised, his voice trembling.

"Levi…"

She interrupted him, prompting him to meet her gaze. His breath caught in his throat, and his heart raced. He couldn't lose her, not now. "Wrapping my wounds will take time. You need to go back out there and help the others," she insisted, her voice strained. "I'll make it quick. Don't worry."

"Don't."

She interrupted him once more. "Please, Levi, let me go."

He whispered her name, his voice choked with emotion. "I can't lose you like this. We're on the brink of ending this war," he pleaded.

"You won't lose me. We'll find each other in another life," she assured him with a sad smile. Her hand reached up to wipe away a tear that he hadn't realized had fallen. He was silently weeping.

"I love you," she whispered.

He couldn't accept this. They were so close to victory, and he couldn't fathom a life without her. This wasn't what either of them wanted, but if it was the hand fate had dealt them, there was little they could do.

"I love you too."

"Finish this war without me. I have faith in all of you."

Levi leaned down and pressed his forehead on her own, tears escaped the moment his closed his eyes tight. His lover leaned to him closer to kiss him passionately.

"I'll see you later," she whispered.

Her heart ached as much as her head did as different memories kept flooding in her mind. She closed her eyes tight for a second to recover herself and realized she's been staring at the same box for who knows how long. She returned the photos in the box and went out of the shop.

Taking a deep breath, she resolved to embark on a quest to unearth the truth behind these haunting memories. She threw herself into research, scouring old books and articles, desperately searching for any mention of a Levi who might have lived during the time of her dreams. It was a long shot, and the odds were against her, but an unshakeable feeling told her that this was important.

Snowbaird Week Prompts

We have a little over a month before Snowbaird Week! Keep reading (or check the images) for some more information about each of the day's prompts:

Day 1 - Academia:

The created work must involve a school, a place of learning, or similar. This can include canonverse AUs where Lucy Gray goes to the Academy or university in the Capitol, or it can be non-canon modern AUs where they are both students at high school or university. It can even be crossover AUs where Lucy Gray and Coryo are Hogwarts students. All of these fall under the Academia umbrella.

Day 2 - Myths / Folklore:

Mythology and folklore from any culture! For example, this includes retellings of Greek myths, European creatures such as the fae and selkies, or the Korean kumiho. We would love to see inclusions of Appalachian folklore such as the Brown Mountain lights and the Bell Witch! This is probably one category that artists can really go wild. We can’t wait to see what you’ll create!

Day 3 - Canon Divergence:

Basically what it says on the tin. Maybe your work imagines that Coryo stayed in District 12, or that Lucy Gray never left the Capitol. The two of them escape into the woods and find District 13. It could even be earlier, changing something that happens during the Games. It could be much later – perhaps Lucy Gray is captured by the Capitol years later. To be clear, the works for this day’s theme all must be canonverse to fit the prompt.

Day 4 - Free Day:

Free Day is for all works that do not fit with any of the themes for Snowbaird Week. Please do not post any works for Ballads/Musicals, Fortune/Fate, or Non-Canon Modern AU on this day.

Day 5 - Ballads / Musicals:

Remember, “ballads” can also refer to poems. At the simplest definition, a ballad is a narrative poem or song; Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe is a ballad, and of course a number of songs from TBOSAS are ballads! For musicals, any musical is fair game! Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Chicago, Hairspray, Moulin Rouge, etc. You can create an AU, a work inspired by (incorporating the themes, tropes, or characterisations of a musical), crossovers, etc. We do not allow songfics.

Day 6 - Fortune / Fate:

This is the most vague prompt (Sorry folks!). Other ways to describe this prompt could be: luck, soulmates, ‘written in the stars’, chance, prosperity, wealth, destiny. Have fun with it!

Day 7 - Non-Canon Modern AU:

This is your coffee shop AU, rival coworkers AU, flower shop AU, Target/Assassin AU and so on. Anything that’s not school-related (that would place it in Academia) but modern AU can be posted on our final day of Snowbaird Week.

a/n it's been a lil quiet around here and i got no time to write a full fic so here's a short drabble to summon the cult and land us all back in delulu, inspired by cherrie and the anon who sent me this ask, pls enjoy and feel free to yell at me after~ thinking of doing a whole over me spicy series, you can check out the jay part here

Soft red fabric binds your wrists together, his fingers gripping the excess as he presses your arms above your head. The surface of the mirror is cold against your palms. You gasp as he crowds you in further. He leans forward, lips ghosting against your ear.

“Shhh doll,” he whispers. You feel him behind you, his frame caging you in, his hips nearly flush against your behind. He’s gotten you somewhat undressed, the skin of your shoulder exposed so he can mouth at it, tugging cloth down to your knees, just enough to leave your bottom half bare. 

Your thighs tremble as his other hand comes down to stroke between your legs, the slide getting stickier as he does. The tips of his fingers tease a little before he works them in. You choke down the whimpers that threaten to escape as he adds more, one after the other. 

Finally, he taps at your thighs and you spread as much as you can with your clothes sliding down, almost to your ankles. Betraying his impatience, he wastes no time gripping at your hips and slipping into you before one of his hands goes back to pinning your wrists against the mirror. The noises you let out are cracked and broken as he thrusts, gasping into your ear.

“Can you open your eyes for me?”

It takes a few moments before you register. He’s relentless, rolling his hips slowly but forcefully, taking all of the air out of your lungs as he goes deeper and deeper. Your lashes flutter, blinking a few times to adjust to the dim light. Fingers tug lightly at your hair, your chin tilting upwards slightly.

“Look doll.” 

Your eyes meet through the mirror. The white blouse shirt he’s wearing is crumpled, unbuttoned, his lean stomach heaving, abs shiny with sweat. Somehow, his black trousers are still on, only undone at the front so he can fuck you. He’s practically towering over you, bearing down on your prone body. His hair is a mess, dishevelled bangs hanging over his eyes, strands sticking to his forehead. The way he looks at you is dark, hungry for something, sending a chill up your spine while heat shoots between your thighs. You clench involuntarily and he hisses.

Look at me while I’m fucking you.

It’s brutal but oddly sweet. The way he slams into you yet holds you so gentle and firm. His voice demands but his eyes are still soft under the darkness, the hunger. He’s unrelenting, leaving marks on your shoulders and back before soothing them with his tongue. It’s a lot. It’s almost too much. You don’t realise it until your eyes are blurry with tears, slipping down your cheeks as you take it, pleasure and pain. He curses the moment the first drop falls, squeezing your wrists to the point that you’re sure his fingers will leave imprints, your whole body flush against the mirror as you watch him take his fill.

“Only look at me, yeah?” He murmurs, a command and a plea all in one. “Just you and me.”

You manage to choke out a sound of agreement before he loses all composure, groaning as you feel him spill into you. For a second, it’s quiet, both of you trembling. Then, he sinks to his knees and finishes you off, lapping at his own release out of you as you shake uncontrollably.

The themes are out! As a reminder, the event will be running from the 3rd of March to the 9th of March, so you have plenty of time to get lists together or go searching for that one fic you forgot to bookmark. Since the titles are a little vague, there's an in-depth explanation of each below the cut.

Detailed explanations of each theme

Day 1: Post-canon

Fics set after the hypothetical events of S5, where the canon plot has already been resolved. Examples include stories about their late highschool years post-Vecna, their college experience, and their lives in the current day.

Day 2: Season 5 speculation

Fics that follow on from the end of s4, where the canon plot has not yet been resolved. They can pick up directly after the final scene of s4 or be set after a timeskip. Examples include apocalypse Byler fics, some gate fics, and Vecnafication fics set after s4. The focus doesn't need to be on wrapping up the Vecna plot, as long as it's part of the setting.

Day 3: Written pre-season 4

Fairly self-explanatory. Since the popularity boom Byler experienced when S4 released, most of the fandom's older fics have been buried beneath all the new content and can be quite difficult to find. The plotlines and backstories they show won't necessarily match up well with the current canon, but that doesn't devalue them as stories. Examples include any fics that began before Volume 1 released. Longfics that started before S4 but are still ongoing count for this category.

Day 4: Friends & family

Fics with a strong focus on the party, the Byers' family, the Wheeler family, or any other platonic relationships. Other ships still can't be a central focus, but it's okay if Byler takes a backseat in fics that fall under this category so long as it's there in some capacity. Examples include coming out fics, outsider POV fics, and sibling bonding fics.

Day 5: Full AU

Fics that place the characters in a completely different setting to canon, rather than adding AU elements to the canonverse. Their setting s and storylines are either completely original or follow the format of another piece of media. Examples include fantasy AUs, SpiderWill AUs, and historical AUs.

Day 6: Canon divergence

Fics that follow canon up to a point, before splitting. Examples of this could include S4 rewrites, fics based on popular theories and gates, Will/Mike gets Vecnaed fics... Fics that include an element of AU while still following the structure of canon, such as soulmate AUs or time travel fics, also fall under this genre.

Day 7: Free day, post anything you haven't already or self promote

Anything goes. Any fics that you want to rec but didn't think matched any of the other categories can go here. Alternatively, if there's anything you meant to rec on a previous day but forgot, then now is your chance. If you're a writer yourself, this is also the day to post your own works and have them shared by the blog.

Exceptions

There are plenty of stories out there that could fit the criteria for multiple categories. If there's a story you want to rec that fits the criteria for more than one day, just use your best judgement about what category it's the most like. For example: a full AU fic written pre-s4 is going to be much more focused on the AU elements than the time that it was written, so it's best to rec it on day 5. If you just can't make up you mind about what day you should rec a fic, either rec it on day 7 or shoot us an ask for advice.

It's been a while since I gave you some recs, so let's go through my current list of favorites. You probably know most of them but some might be brand new to people, and we have to change that! I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do :)

Absolutely love this one. Both Daemon and Rhaenyra are kind of messed up and they absolutely deserve each other. No one else could handle them at their crazy. Check the tags before starting it but if it's not to your tastes try anything by this author, their writing is superb and they have bunch of original unhinged ideas that I just love 🩷 Edit: this fic is now completed!!

This fic only just started but I'm already obsessed. It has darker themes so again, definitely check the tags, but if you're not scared of some angst before a happy ending, give it a shot! The author's other works are also amazing (I looove crimson water), the writing is so flowery and makes you see it in front of you like a movie! 🖤 Edit: this fic was previously called back to black
