WIPs of some of my drawings where i made a full little painting for the sketch to nail colours or values first. i thought it would be fun to do a Behind The Scenes and also show u how some drawings changed, what i kept and what i discarded and at what point i just started adding unplanned details

all these were done using a mixture of sai and procreate

eye of the otherworld is inspired by a real photo i took two weeks ago!

i soooo wanted to draw water that looked like this, weeds and all, so the original colours of that sketch were picked direct from the photo. but i wasn’t satisfied with it so i changed it using a gradient map (you can see it’s crunchy on the borders between colours). for the final, i re-painted everything again using the sketch colours as a guide so that i would not end up with the crunchy edges a gradient map will give u, and so that i could add in extra contrast over the top. the black swirl pattern in the final was an ad lib lol but i’m really happy with how it gives the impression of water or liquid even if it’s not realistic... i will try again to recreate something like this photo tho because i am obsessed. the birds were originally swans but the necks were driving me crazy i needed a bird with a shorter neck and grebes are associated with this location in canon so it was perfect. they have very funny feet. the last detail i added to this was the white flashes in their primary flight feathers (which do not occur in nature btw)

hanged man was an interesting one because it’s based on a sketch i made in 2020 when i first wrote this fun impalement scene

here is félix being impaled for the first time in 2020 by a rusted harpoon that essentially rips his human disguise off to reveal the black carapace underneath

for the coloured sketch in the photoset i re-lined this exact sketch in sai to update it to match my current lineart style, but as you can see i realised the pose itself needed work and not just a re-line so i completely redid it in procreate to exaggerate the pose and gestures. i went into this one already knowing exactly what bg colours i wanted so that was no issue but the hardest part was weirdly figuring out what he was going to be standing on. in canon he is standing on top of a very high wall and leaning back over a fatal drop. the black pencil lines in the clouds and the bird were ad libbed but i liked the idea of throwing the bird in as some extra symbol of freedom the likes of which you will not experience if you have been shot with a harpoon. the green was not working at all so the swap out to more purpley pink tones was last minute. i unified the different colours by using a colour-shifting brush (you’ll see that his gaiters are different colours - i didn’t hand pick those, the colour jitter did)

for Big Pascal... originally it was going to be a confrontation between the guy on the ground and pascal but i wasn’t feeling the standing pose and it ended up being... if not restful then at least maybe a little more benevolent than the shadow of colossus shit it was before. the white cracks in the sky were originally going to be black but it just didn’t work. a lot of people tag this one as some form of cowboy aesthetic which is funny to me. there’s no cowboys here

i do like the lens flare effect in the b&w thumbnail tbh and i think i kind of lost the low camera angle effect in the final

i drew a bonus comic of the two characters interacting during this scene (mostly the lil guy just trying to ignore what’s happening in the sky)

CG and Execution Thumbnails

I recently got my hands on the V3 art book and I am absolutely obsessed with it!! I wanted to share some of my favourite (mostly subtle) differences between CG/Execution thumbnails and their final iterations.

In this death road of despair cg, Miu was originally supposed to be in the same slice as Kokichi and Gonta, and a tenth unknown person in the top left corner.

Angie seems much more defeated in the original sketch for the other death road of despair cg, with her head drooping rather than praying.

I just find Shuichi's grimace in the sketch of the first training cg Very funny compared to the final one (which is much more dignified).

Shuichi and Kaito's shocked expressions in the original sketch for the cg with Maki joining in training are delightful to me, I wish they kept them.

Maki originally was reaching out to Kaito in the trial 4 cg where his illness is revealed, as opposed to her straight posture in the final cg. Shuichi's expression in the thumbnail is also very funny to me.

The stupid little nose they gave kiibo in the sketch of the cg where he's lying flat in the hydraulic press made me giggle.

Maki's expression was much more intense in the original sketch for her pointing the crossbow at Kokichi in this cg.

Himiko's >_< face made me smile in the cg of everyone (minus Kiibo) training together after trial 5.

THIS thumbnail from trial 6 is especially interesting to me. I wonder if the thumbnail was made before the trial character placements were decided at all, so this portrait and figure are random. Or maybe this was done later on when it was partially decided, and a survivor was initially next to Tsumugi, before they were moved later. It's kind of hard to tell because of the, uh, lack of detail in this one. But I'm very curious.

In the dark belt bonus scene in chapter four, originally Himiko, Shuichi, and Gonta were in their normal outfits! Also, Gonta's expression is MUCH different. I'm glad we got that cute little smile in the end, its such an iconic Gonta CG and probably one of my favourites because of it.

Initially, the end of Kaede's Execution had everyone sitting as members of the audience. Its much less intense then the final result, so I think this was a good change.

Originally, there was no death fake out for the v3 survivors! Kiibo just let them be and proceeded to blow up the school.

BONUS:

Nothing different here as far as I can tell, I just LOVE how detailed the storyboards are for Kaito's execution. This is just one example. Its so, so pretty looking

is there a good place to start if we want to learn about idletry? im very interested in the story and all the bits and pieces revealed so far but i dont know if youve like, stated the basics both about the characters-in-story and how you’re releasing the comic

hi there. unfortunately, idletry became a passion project very abruptly and many details were added very quickly without regard for how long the project would take. once i did realize how large the project was, i decided that i would not even kid myself on the idea of holding in spoilers for the next 5 years, and those two factors combined make the information available very chaotic and slapdash -- somewhat intentionally.

i don't even have the comics tagged separately for easier access among the idletry content -- although, i could go back and give them a separate tag.

i can summarize the story and say that it's about a funny little talking honey badger/tasmanian devil named jessie gaylord who has for the last 10 years of her life been on heavy psychiatric medication in an attempt to mitigate a pervasive delusion that the world is a fictional story. she also has a notorious aggressive streak. these medications work primarily by leaving her so tired that she sleeps most of the time.

the story begins when her medical team has run out of typical medications to try, and they must order an older, more aggressive type of drug which is not commonly used anymore, and has a lengthier process to manufacturing and approving the drug. during this time, she is not on any medication, and she becomes more urgently fixated on convincing people that the delusion is true.

she ends up attempting to contact the writer, who is referred to as God, and she receives a response. she immediately attempts to write the story herself, and she's granted the ability to do anything within the story so long as she can write it out. (the intricacies and limitations of this power have been elaborated upon in a bunch of fragmentary posts, so i won't try to condense it here)

at the end of the first act, she kills the first writer and becomes the new God of her world. the rest of the story is about what she does after acquiring omnipotence, and it heavily features a character named fate -- or shiloh, as jessie calls her -- with whom she enters an intimate relationship.

she has a happy loving family composed of a father named adam, a mother named evelyn, and an older sister named emily. there is a later minor subplot about a cult following who worships her after she becomes God, and this cult is initially organized by an ant called samanthuel -- or samwich, as jessie calls them. these are usually the other characters i mention and i am too lazy to link them right now

the comic itself is currently being written. the script stands at around 51,000 words at the time of writing this as i work on the second act. after it's written, i will let it simmer for a few months and then write a second draft to start to relieve the story of its bloat. depending on its length at that point, i will either need to write a third draft, or i will start drawing the comic.

chances are, during the second draft, i will start to thumbnail or sketch scenes which receive little to no editing, as i know they will likely remain relatively unchanged even through multiple drafts.

the sketch strips are to tide me and an eager audience over in the meantime, but they've sort of dried up as i focus all of my attention on finishing the first draft and taking care of a puppy that was kind of just forced onto me.

i've made a couple of full-length comics before and they have taken years. it is, unfortunately, just the nature of the process. for idletry, i plan to self-publish the comic. i've never published something in print before, so that is the most daunting part for me.

the plan at the moment is to crowdfund this, but, to be frank with you, i no longer pay rent, and i care very much about having this comic as a printed book. i have no issue with paying the cost of printing out of my own pocket by the time it's done and am even anticipating that outcome ahead of time, despite having a pretty reliable audience by now.

i'm on the fence about releasing a digital book version, as i very much want to retain digital color versions of the pages that are more vibrant, but due to the explicit adult content of the story, i don't want it to be free-access.

tl;dr: it's about a lesbian incel with anger issues who's given omnipotence.

i'm still working on the story because i want it to be good.

i'm planning on printing it as a physical comic book once it's done.

I'm excited to finish it but it's %40 done i think??? i can't find enough time to paint them and i had some sketches i wanted to re-draw on digital and also there were some thumbnails from last summer and i also wanna show you guys my little plushie, Lionivil (leo-ni-will yeah obviously) he is funny

and there is a short animation project i'm working on for class, it has a really precious story that i think some people will resonate with and there are my finals.......uh so i really hope to share my work here,, my personal art as well! and thank you for your support!!!

for a WHILE i’ve wanted to write a short fic/comic (some of both) for each cycle of the stolen century. it would be called like ‘lucretia’s journal’ or ‘mission log’ or smth and the fic parts would have little illustrations too. they’d only be like 1k/1-2 page short just a little snapshot for each cycle, just of interesting bits of worlds they see, how the crew develops as people and as a group etc. definitely some funny ones in there but not limited to that. but that’s such a huge commitment and i hate starting things when i don’t know if i’ll finish them, so i’ve done some rough planning and thumbnails, but not been actually like working on it intentionally. it would be difficult enough to do 100 different things but it’s also easy to get carried away especially with writing dialogue for comics, and then realizing this would actually take so many pages that it’s not feasible lol. i do have a list of all the canon cycles that i’ve added a few to that i already have the concept for, but it’s still something i’d like to do someday, but probably not anytime soon.

Check your emails because June Choices Insiders has arrived.

Weird that it says 'love interests' in plural here even though the leaked screenshot clearly says that it's a single LI book.

Also, we're now getting colored sketches! It's a progress lol 😛. I still wanna see more to be convinced PB didn't use AI here as well. Funnily enough the LI has a matching purplish skin tone in the sketch like the in-game sprite 🤣

And this cute little fellow here will be mine for sure 😻:

I didn't care about RWB, won't care about the other RWB either, another gender locked p*rn book with a cocky LI and and an MC with a constant waterfall between her legs. Moving on.

The FAQ section still doesn't have any questions answered that I sent, although at least they actually could be popular questions this time not just some cherry picked bootlicker comments. ID3 seems to be on the cards unless PB changes the final chapter's ending sentence at the last minute. It's actually surprising since the lead writer left or was let go recently (she writes for Chapters now it seems). So, those hopeful for TCH3 can have little more faith as well after its book lead also left.

I'm somewhat excited for Terror Fest. Horror books tend to be some of the best in Choices, at least in my opinion, but the MC and LI designs will probably be horrifying enough on their own if recent books are any indication. PB also promised multiple LIs but I'm pretty sure it's going to be another single LI book for me since PB remains tight lipped about when we'll be getting another book with multiple female LIs.

Funny that All of Us isn't a pride month book but I guess it needs more time to get finished. My guess is it won't be a traditional GOC book but our choice of MC will be tied to either MLM or WLW romance.

Plus One is a new book title. The wedding venue thumbnail is a pretty good hint at what it could entail. It's probably not that dystopian book that the CEO teased us with but another low budget gender locked romance story I'll be skipping. Unless it has a more wholesome romance and the LI isn't another arrogant egomaniac.

For non-beta testers it doesn't look like a very exciting summer, with 2-3 gender locked stories with cocky LIs (TGOU, FR, RiWB) I'll be ignoring and only HOF probably in August to look forward to. But that's just my humble opinion.

AAAAAAAA — thank you so much !!! Words cannot describe how much this means to me 🧡🧡🧡 how much ALL the comments in the reblogs have meant to me. I read them like a giddy 90's cartoon school girl.

Historically coloring has been something that I've hated to do. 90% of my 2015 dragon age stuff was in black and white and when I did color I used to just color with whatever the 'actual' colors of the character were with no regards to palette's or cohesion:

I started getting into color with the animal crossing commissions. But creating palette's and testing values ahead of time is something that I am VERY much still working/practicing with. Getting so many comments on the colors for these last few pieces has been super validating though 🧡🧡🧡

I also really feel for the first time that I'm able to actually get across the ideas in my head — which has been empowering as fuck for me because I love the Dragon age games and I've always had so many thoughts about the characters that I've struggled to convey.

Photoshop?

I had unfortunately missed the introduction to photoshoo due to my CCS and Tutorial so I was quite clueless. I had a bit of previous experience but nothing meaningful. U really just wanted to mess around and try to understand what this program is and what I could do. I discovered you can draw and actually doing quite a little excited I wasn't expecting. I really like the drawing and colouring capabilities of photoshop and wanted to use that mainly for this piece.

I an using my previous thumbnails that I had created on Tuesday in the workshop. We created a other mind map to expand and pin point exactly on how we are exploring our ideas through.. I chose "Flow" (as in creative flow and movement), stuck and unpredictable. I had loads of of fun creating different thumbnail ideas for this project. I made a lot so here they are.....

In the end we made the people around us vote for which we should do and then we had to expand on this and make it bigger! Here's my bigger version / final version of what I wanted it to look like :)))

While in photoshop I didn't actually draw the cat as I was already struggling just drawing with a mouse so I decided to use the picture that had originally given me the inspiration to draw this!

I used rough and scratch lines in places to make it appear as if it was drawn. The process of cutting out the background was nightmarish. I tried using the automatic way the program does for you but it cut it out so terribly so I ended up doing it myself. I zoomed in a lot and cut it out bit by bit. Some places were still a big choppy so I used a blur tool to smoothen it out so it looked a lot better. I was really satisfied with how easy it was so draw on photoshop. The mouse using part wasn't but it had everything you would need and a great varaity if colour. I enjoyed myself throughout. I ended up using my previous colour pallets which I have posted before hand :))

There was a lot a lot if different styles of brushes I could use which added to the fun!. The stars and swirlys came from my inspiration of the Baebadoobee posters I have posted earlier. I love how cute yet chaotic thy look and wanted to embody that.

Here it is! I ended up not doing the tail but I kind of regret it do I might add it tomorrow when I get the chance

I started to try work on my original idea if making a rock star poster but I ran into a lot of difficulties. The pictures I have are too small and poorly taken so when I move them to photoshop they pixilate very badly and you can barely see what they even are. I attempted to fix this by looking up solutions but I myself couldn't fix it. I also struggled on how to move one picture to another picture instead of creating their different documents... It was really confusing...

But today u was wandering in EASONS when I came across the magazine section. I remembered how I enjoyed creating those magazine art and sonic began searching through them. I ended up finding this great one filled to the brim of fashion models strutting and posing to very interesting backgrounds. I thought it would be really funny to instead of making a rock star poster to creating a poster for a cats fashion show/ Runway (A meoway)

I thought I could use some of these pictures (I will post separately) to create the runway advertisement and to use the singular models to be the "headliners" at the runway. I'm thinking about using gouache and paining the to be cats instead of humans and changing their names into cat puns etc. Im debating on using Ms paint to digitally add stars and other sparkles because I like how weird and cubic the Ms paint brush is.

Hiya, just saw ur tags about using Procreate and I've been considering getting an iPad for art, would u recommend it / what kind of iPad do u use ? :) Btw ur art is great, you've got a great eye for colour !

HI IM SOOO SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO REPLY I never get asks so I never check my inbox shfkjsjd im so sorry but thank you for the COMPLIMENT! That’s so funny too because I feel like color is my greatest weakness :0 NOW here’s my iPad info!!

I love procreate!! I have the iPad Pro- I would specifically recommend this over the others only because the apple pencil charges magnetically on the side and I have some friends who have issues with their pencil dying more frequently with the pen you have to plug in to charge. If you draw a lot I’d also recommend getting as much storage as you can afford because I had some problems with procreate crashing before I expanded my storage, but if you keep your files organized and clean out once in a while you probably will not run into this issue. ALSO! I got mine used for about $350 but even that was a steal compared to what I’ve been seeing them going for. So honestly don’t break the bank for this thang, i use it in my professional work and it was worth it for me, but i have friends who use it exclusively for personal sketches and such who really like the mini! It’s smaller and even easier to tote around :)

I’ve used a buncha different art programs- started out with mspaint and then the free vers. of krita (which I LOVE if you’re interested in learning photoshop, it’s very similar and in my opinion kind of preferable to use??) and I used photoshop for free in art school! And now I use procreate :) it just kind of allows me to work a lot faster because I don’t worry about files getting corrupted, and the interface is just very clean. I also love the sketchbook (page assist) feature because it keeps my thumbnails and doodles organized! It’s not as… developed as photoshop but I specifically love the perspective tool- used it all the time when I was learning- and the animation tool! I’ve made some funky little gifs and animatics with it. Aside from procreate there are other programs you can get for the iPad, I have a 3D modeling program and I think there’s even a version of clip studio paint? Plus I watch YouTube while I’m drawing lol. Split screen feature is great for keeping references open while you draw! I hope this wasn’t all too much info, but I’m not like. Super great at being concise. I like procreate lmao and thank u again for the compliment :))

A GUIDE TO HOW I DREW THIS

This drawing was for an art trade with a friend, but as going through and drawing it I was taking screen shots and notes to make a rough make shift guide to how I draw for those who may be interested :-D I'm not particularly an amazing artist but I sometimes get questions so I might as well make a guide. This is my first time making a guide that doesn't involve me screaming down someone's ear on a discord call so sorry if it's a little unclear or messy ;D

Something that may surprise you... Or not.

Most of my drawings that involve a background don't start with any sketch at all! For the sake of my sanity, or better yet a lack of my skill, I cannot draw backgrounds very well and often need visual guide to work. Using Roblox Studio I start my beginnings of drawings with simply just building the backgrounds part by part, with help from community made objects of course. Though I'm sure some may call this cheating I solely live by the idea of there being "no rules only tools" with art and that has been keeping me happy. Anyways, the next step is for me to position the camera to an angle I think that might be cool for a drawing. Mind you, at this stage I've get to come up with much of any idea for the drawing I'm doing, but I only just know where I want the characters to be. In this case I want them on the couch.

Now I'm sure some people will have issue with this, but the next stage of the drawing is to simply just trace :D (I am using clip studio paint for this but im more than sure tracing is possible in any drawing program lol)

Obviously there is some limitation with this in my art since I think an overly accurate and on point drawing of a background really sucks a lot of soul out of the art so I let small things slip through. This probably defeats some point of tracing for some people but personally I don't care. The next step of the drawing is to simple go over what I have traced from the screenshot and refine it. This means going over it all again, playing with line weight, small amounts of shading and adding detail to the objects around.

Because of how I draw, I like to frame the drawing inside of square on my canvas as a brief preview of how the drawing will look in full. I'm still doing this without even drawing the characters yet to this can obviously change later but "YOLO" On to the next part of my drawing is to finally start drawing the characters. I still don't really have anything in mind yet for the pose so I simply go with the flow and see where it leads me as I rough out some thumbnail poses. This is on a new layer btw. I'm not here to give you a guide on how I draw for this but really more of a process tour, so when the next step just skips to this, it must definitely feel like a leap. For this stage I simply draw out my characters on a new layer over the background, trying to make sure their line art stands out more from the background. If it looks to close, with a low opacity airbrush I will erase some of the line art on the background to make the character's line art pop out more by comparison.

Now just in case you're worried you may want to change the characters pose later and keep the background, make sure to NEVER erase the background and instead colour under the characters on a new layer with white so you will get the same appearance as erasing the background while keeping it.

That also gives some funny wiggle room to do something silly like this >;P This may be hard to see, but the next step of the drawing is duplicating the characters line art, blurring it by 6% and lowering the duplicated layers opacity. When comparing it to the original, you can really see the POP

And just like that, we have the complete line art :D Now when it comes to colouring, I don't use Clipstudio, I instead move over to a different program called Rebelle 7 for colouring. Using the 7th edition of the program is a new thing, I've been using 5 for waaay longer. I just skipped on using 6 lol. For those unfamiliar, the appeal of the Rebelle software is simply for emulating traditional mediums digitally. I've been using them for the past year or so to make some cool drawings using what the programs offer. I mostly use the water colour stuff but there's tons of other stuff with them too. I'd love to shill it some more, but I'm not being paid, you can do some digging yourself about it >;-) So before moving to Rebelle 7, I exsport my drawing as a png. Please make sure the background on the drawing is WHITE. This is because when we import the drawing to Rebelle 7 we will be using it on a multiply layer so the white of the background becomes transparent. If you are drawing with coloured lines you can export it transparent but I haven't messed with it enough to know much haha A before and after of making the line art layer a multiply layer:

Now this is where the colouring fun begins >:D So how I started with this drawing was by splashing down a LOT of blue teal and green for the colour theme of this image. With the water colour brush the colours blended together really well from the start. Of course you can always go over it and blend them some more if you don't like the appearance. Using the textured blenders gives a cool look to the colouring :D

The next thing I do once I got the base colour down is that I move straight to shading. Typically on most drawings I would start with the character colours first, but in this specific drawings case the shading comes first since I want to keep hold of all these blues.

While shading I'm never too worried about keeping it messy since I thinks it gives my art a special charm to it since I adore the look of messy traditional art.

And just like that, after a LOT of trail and error my shading is done... FOR NOW The next part of the drawing is now coming down to colouring the characters :D

With adding colours to this drawing I am only going to add them to the characters and maybe a few small parts around the background. I first start with making a new layer set to "Darken", "Soft light" or "Multiply". With each new colour I put down I make a new layer for it so I can experiment with it individually. PROBABLY not practical, however that's just how I do it. I'm sure other layer types work fine, it just really depends with your drawing and what you're trying to do. Images below of me testing colours and layer types:

For this drawing, since the lighting is so strong (from the off camera TV) I want the character's colours to be very weak when against the light. The main colour of the drawing (our the base colours I put down earlier) the colours of the characters we are adding are only there to hint of what colours the characters really are. I want the focus to stay on the blue. This will involve a lot of testing.

I'm not really amazing at this so this will change a lot as I colour more and more. Using grey scale view helps to let you know if the colours you're adding are changing the lighting of the image. So make sure to check if you don't want to mess up your shading!

In the pictures on the wall I purposely left empty so while colouring i can give a vague illusion to a picture without really drawing it and keeping the attention to the characters and not the background. this is also a fun time to sneak in Easter eggs if I feel like it

I don't bother adding much colour to the BG as mentioned before, only to the characters. After adding your colour check the grey scale and decide if your image needs any highlights to make it pop

In my case it does this part is optional depending on your drawing.

For deciding where the highlights go I pre pick a colour and go over the areas I want to make lighter in greyscale, not worrying about the colours just yet since it's on a new layer and that means I can mess with it more later :D

Turing greyscale off may not look the best NOW, but messing with the layers and blending blushes may go a long way! Due to Tumblr's Image post limit I'll just go over with the next few parts over text, tho it can really be summarized with a few sentences. After blending it looked fine, however the image STILL didn't pop in the way I had wanted so I changed the layer blending mode to "Linear Dodge". This worked perfectly however I had to re-do some highlights because I noticed mistakes.

But besides all that, we now have achieved the wanted look! I don't really know how to end a guide, so I guess this is it. Thanks for reading! I hope this is a little bit helpful or at least interesting to someone. :D

Easily pit, it has all my favorite series. Recently I have been enjoying games and main more, but I've always loved the unscripted content more than anything

ohhh my god this is hard but I absolutely do. TNTL #9 feat. Damien, I rewatch it at least once a week. it's what originally got me into smosh, I clicked on it because the thumbnail had girls kissing and then my life was changed forever. the bits are genuinely so hilarious and I think really do it's one of the best tntls they've done. shayne's pizza place divorce and damien's detective stand out to me, when i was in middle school i would recite those bits from memory to my friends and it always went over like a lead balloon. 10/10 video i've loved it for years

7: What is your favorite series on Smosh (main channel)?

The funeral roasts! My favorite series are always the ones where they kind of just let the cast loose to do fun characters and bits and I like the semi-scriptedness of it where everyone gets to write their own script. They're always a good time and somehow they never feel too mean to be fun

I feel like current Smosh Games has way fewer running series, so if we're talking current SG it's the trivial pursuit TNTLs but if we're talking old SG uhhh probably maricraft?? specifically the superhero series they did

I am very much not one for RPF but I do care so much about shayne and damien as friends!! I'm struggling to nail down Tucker’s personality. I need him to act slightly out of character in a way that suggests he's upset but I can't even get him regular

Hmmm… that’s an interesting challenge and I think there’s kind of two questions wrapped up in one. 1) What makes Tucker a Tucker? and 2) How might you convey that a character is upset (especially if that character is Tucker)?

Let’s explore shall we?

Time to talk Tuck’

Disclaimer: I haven’t done a detailed re-watch of DP in quite a while so I may be a little fuzzy on some details, and canon has its share of inconsistencies and rather significant gaps that sort of require a dash of ‘reading into’ to bridge. I’m not trying to codify a definitive ‘One True Tucker’ here, this is just my personal go-to reading of him.

To start with, let’s look at some of Tucker’s obvious surface-level traits:

He’s a technology geek, to the point of naming his PDAs and grieving them when they break.

He’s food-focussed and extremely carnivorous, so much so that he complains about missing meals, can tell meats apart by smell and gets sick if he eats something too vegetable/plant-heavy.

He likes pretty girls and frequently flirts with/ asks new girls out in passing.

That’s something, but those don’t really say much about actual character. As a favourite author of mine might say, not a picture of a life as much as a thumbnail sketch. And in isolation there are a veritable army of creepy, sleezy “Hollywood Nerd” characters with the same traits - peak example being the Big Bang Theory boys, who (while maybe kind of pitiable) I wouldn’t exactly call likeable or sympathetic or good, or even funny. So why isn’t he like this?

What is the soul of a Tucker?

If you’re looking for comparisons to other characters, the main three that come to mind for me are Ron Stoppable from Disney’s Kim Possible, the Wally West version of the Flash from the 2001 Justice League/ JL Unlimited cartoon and I can’t believe I’m saying this for all of Tumblr dot com to see Donkey from Shrek.

Okay let me explain, especially that last one.

To me, Tucker reads as a very sincere and self-actualised character, and that’s part of why he’s lovable. Ron, Flash and (sigh, yes) Donkey have character traits that could be really aggravating or even unlikable (in fact, I would argue that Donkey is intentionally written to aggravate Shrek) but there’s an earnestness to these character that makes them endearing instead of annoying. (Go watch Sideways’ video about the musical structure of Shrek and Donkey’s role in it). There’s also a degree of self-awareness and self-acceptance in all these characters; on some level they (and the narrative) are aware of themselves as flawed- that they aren’t perfect and that people can find them annoying - they don’t necessarily see themselves as the top dog in the room and they sincerely admire and respect other characters around them. That’s probably part of why the Big Bang boys don’t work; they’re not written to have any introspection beyond whiney self-pity and the show has a cynical and slightly mean sense of humour that constantly pits them against each other in insincere games of one-upmanship.

Of the main Team Phantom Trio, Tucker is probably the most sincerely optimistic and self-actualised. Danny gets down on himself a lot in a very self-critical way, and Sam can come across as extremely defensive, but by comparison Tucker seems kind of content to just be who he is.

I have no idea if this was consciously in the minds of the writers but not for nothing I think there’s a reason why Angeline and Maurice Foley are the most normal and unconditionally loving parents we actually see in the show. Sam’s parents are extremely conditional; generously you could say that there’s conflict between their love for her and them having a very narrow/ outdated/ judgemental/ image-focussed model of ‘success’ which she doesn’t fit, but you could equally read them as seeing her more as an extension of themselves/ their reputation/ their ambitions than her own person. Danny, meanwhile, very often reads to me as being the less-favourite Fenton child, even before the portal accident and having to deal with their pervasive hatred toward half of himself. Jazz is extremely gifted and I think she sort of set the standard for Maddie and Jack kids-wise, and at times Jack seems to have wanted a son who would be just like him… and while they do still love Danny, sometimes it feels like it’s in spite of him not being another Jazz or miniature Jack, rather than loving him for being Danny.

You can kind of see it in how the trio react to things - Sam sees a world that rejects her and gets angry at the injustice, sets out to make that world acknowledge her value; Danny sees a world that rejects him and takes it as evidence of his own inadequacy, worries that he needs to change himself in hopes of becoming ‘good enough’. Meanwhile, Tucker seems to have grown up in a household where he was loved and accepted and valued for who he was, unconditionally. Sure, it sucks that the jocks target him, it sucks that people don’t see him as cool, he would like to be more popular, and if a girl wanted to say ‘yes’ he certainly wouldn’t say ‘no’… but at the same time he doesn’t show much interest in forcing other people to change, and he also doesn’t express any significant desire to change himself or stop being the way he is. He’s self-actualised and capable of self-love in a way that the others aren’t, and he brings a needed internal stability to the trio because of it.

Tucker also tends to talk himself up more than he talks himself down. Personally I read him doing that with at least a dash of irony (see that post about how sarcastic positive self-talk is a better habit than self-loathing commentary). But again, that earnestness. I don’t think he sees himself as being as important/ attractive/ special as he puts on… or at the very least he respects other characters to the same degree. Self-actualisation isn’t just about thinking you’re awesome, it’s about accepting yourself and others as you are, flaws included, and of the three Tucker is the most comfortable in his own skin. He’s okay with being goofy and dorky and unapologetically into food and tech, making cheesy quips and geeky references. It also makes it hilariously fitting that a convention-goer being turned into a werewolf-furry during Reality Trip is not at all a deal-breaker for him.

Which isn’t to say that Tucker is a perfect or purely honest, naïve sunshine character. He still lies (even though he’s often bad at it), he has his share of insecurities and phobias (hospitals and sick bays are his kryptonite), he still has moments of selfishness, he can be jealous and stubborn and petty and… yeah a little bit creepy with the girl thing sometimes. Although in defence of the girl thing, we do have to acknowledge that Elmer Hartman’s works have pervasive patterns of sexism and toxic masculinity I mean, penname “Butch”, what did we expect? and, while I think the other DP writers are less egregious and more skilled as storytellers, a lot of their non-Hartman work end up being on shows like Family Guy which have the same sort of issues. It can be hard to distinguish between a character being intentionally written a certain way and the show just thinking that “the swimsuit edition”, “perving in the women’s lockers”, “ha ha he’s in a bra” and “any girl who actually enjoys being feminine is a shallow, capital-B Witch” are acceptable as jokes. And, to Tucker’s credit, he doesn’t usually react angrily or with entitlement when he gets turned down, and he doesn’t get up to any of the kind of creepy techno-geek stalker-ism that Big Bang and similar would pass off as “just boys being boys”. He might not enjoy hearing it but Tucker can respect a firm ‘no’ without taking it too personally (most of the time). This is one of the reasons I think he’s closer to JL/JLU’s Flash!Wally rather than YJS1’s Kid Flash!Wally. I like KF a lot as a character but he can be rather pushy and wilfully obtuse when Miss Martian is very obviously not giving him a yes. Flash meanwhile gets shut down by Big Barda and immediately switches to ‘okay, here’s a flower anyway, let’s be friends’. Like I said in my other post, DP as a show doesn’t treat singlehood/virginity as a deficiency or reason for ridicule (again contrast Big Bang Theory) and that kind of insecure, validation-desperate creepiness doesn’t really appear in his character. Girls are fun and Tucker would like to have fun with them, but if they say no then that’s okay - he’ll keep looking until he finds someone who can properly appreciate how “Too Fine” he is. Plus I’m not actually sure he’d know what to do if he got a ‘yes’ - sometimes it feels like he’s more enamoured with the chase or the idea of having the affections of a girl than with a specific girl or having a girlfriend. (Not helped by underdeveloped female characters, but on the other hand, very convincing teen-just-figuring-this-out behaviour).

That said, things have changed for Tucker and he deals with more than just girl woes during the series. He and Danny are basically honorary brothers (so close that they’re completely comfortable falling asleep on top of each other); they grew up together, shared everything with each other and kept each other company on the bottom rung of the loser ladder. But now Danny has superpowers; he’s a hero, a somebody, a person people want to be around… and Tucker is left wondering whether he brings anything worthwhile anymore and if maybe he’s getting left behind. Tucker’s jealousy/ insecurity over this is a character beat that crops up a couple of times throughout the show - @redrobin-detective wrote a really good post about it which articulates things far better than I could.

Going a little into headcanon territory, I think Danny and Tucker kind of mirror each other in that regard; neither can quite internalise how valuable they themselves are to their friends. Tucker is incredibly talented with technology but, in his eyes, how can that compare to an heiress and a literal superhero? Meanwhile, in Danny eyes, Tucker is smart and skilled, Sam is passionate and driven, and then there’s him; the disappointing 'dumb' Fenton with annoying, inconvenient, life-disrupting freaky powers that he got from a complete accident. They don’t necessarily see themselves clearly, and they tend to downplay their own worth relative to the people they respect.

As for making Tucker feel authentically Tucker-ish in terms of actual writing, dialogue and word-choice, I’m not sure I can give much helpful advice. My approach is to reference the source material and/or fics that captured it really well until I can get an intuitive grasp of his specific patterns. Mystery Meat, One of a Kind, What You Want, Doctors Disorders and King Tuck are all episodes with some good Tucker-centric reference scenes if you don’t have the time for a full watch-through.

Now, with that as a foundation, let’s take a look at question 2.

Portraying that a character is upset

This is a little complicated because ‘upset’ can cover a lot of things, and the reasons why and way in which a character is upset can do a lot to change how they’re behaving.

Are they Afraid? Worried? Depressed? Ashamed? Resentful? Dealing with trauma? Maybe they’re angry, or that anger is hiding something else; a mask for fear or shame or sorrow.

Are they trying to hide that they’re upset, hoping no-one notices because they don’t want to talk about it? Are they secretly hoping someone notices? Maybe they want it to be obvious? Or maybe they don’t care what people see.

All of these things will subtly influence the details but there still are some common signs you can use. As you said, an upset character will often act in ways that are not typical of them - that can feel “out of character”.

Sometimes there are behavioural disruptions, especially if the character is stressed/ distressed. They might be more tired because they’re not sleeping well - maybe because of nightmares or insomnia. They could also show a loss of appetite; forgetting to eat, becoming disinterested in food and only picking at food when it’s given to them.

Some characters respond to upset by withdrawing - they might find excuses to pull away, especially if they’re trying to hide it. Other characters go the opposite direction, overcompensating by becoming too outgoing, bubbly, busy, happy etc. in a “fake it ‘til you make it” kind of way.

Emotional distress can cause a person to seem preoccupied, distracted by their own thoughts or troubles. This can manifest in a lack of interest in their usual hobbies, struggling to pay attention or remember things, or a general lack of focus.

There’s also just general mood stuff, which will depend on the way in which they are upset and whether they’re trying to hide it. A character who is angry/ resentful might get more passive-aggressive or mean in their snarky-ness, make comments under their breath or be outright hostile if they don’t care who knows it. A character who’s upset at themself might make more self-depreciating remarks than usual, be faster to diminish their own achievements. A character who’s anxious might fret noticeably, run through decisions in conversation or try to keep it to themselves but start increasingly checking and cross-checking things. A character who is sad or depressed might show a general tiredness, pessimism, or apathy towards things that they’d usually be enthused or passionate about.

As mentioned, anger can sometimes be a mask for deeper issues so watch out if a character becomes defensive or cross about things - that can be a sign that there’s something else going on that they’re insecure/ ashamed about.

When it comes to Tucker, some things that would ring warning bells for me would be a lack of interest (or outright disinterest) in his usual hobbies, as well as him going from optimistic/sincere to more pessimistic/cynical.

Food especially would be a big sign since not only can appetite-loss be a general sign that someone is struggling, but Tucker in particular is usually very food focussed so it would pull double-duty as a loss of interest. Similarly, he might be distracted to the point of not noticing some big new tech thing that he’d usually be very enthusiastic about, and if he were in a particularly bad mood he could get angry at someone who tries to use it to distract him. Tucker doesn’t always notice every pretty girl on the street but if a whole group were to walk past with nary a look from him then that could signal preoccupation.

If he’s trying to hide that he’s upset, he could overcompensate in the opposite direction - playing up the happy-go-lucky food and tech-focus until he’s almost a caricature of himself in a way that weirds the others out.

Tucker is also a very chatty and bubbly character so him going quiet or withdrawing could also signal something’s wrong (although you could also play this one for comedy Spiderman-style by having everyone freak out worrying that something’s wrong when really he just has a sore throat). If he’s trying to hide it, perhaps he might come up with a plausible excuse, such as burying himself in some big tech project so that he doesn’t have to talk to people or deal with the problem.

Him suddenly becoming very pessimistic, negative or mean in his comments/ sarcasm would a very obvious warning bell that something’s eating at him, and specifically that he’s probably angry/ resentful about whatever it is.

Like I said, the specifics will depend on what he’s upset about and how it’s making him feel.

Tucker is kind of funny like that; he’s simultaneously a very simple character and yet very nuanced in his particular form of sincere simplicity. He wears his heart on his sleeve and this means you can usually get a sense of what he’s feeling even when he tries to hide it.

mlqc | let’s hit rewind

What kind of videos would the MLQC guys make if they were YouTubers? I think this is a youtube!au, but to be fair, Kiro probably has a YouTube channel in canon. See it as you will? I won’t really talk about their life outside of YT/internet so you can decide for yourself whether this is an AU or not, and whether they’re a full-time YouTuber or not.

Victor probably has a cooking channel

scratch that. he absolutely starts as one of those Aesthetic™ cooking channels like Cooking tree, HANSE, Sweet The MI or Nino’s Home.

his channel is called Souvenir because he’s not THAT original you can’t expect everything from a man, people.

he starts off doing these voiceless cooking videos, but after a voice and face reveal at 2 million followers where he cooks something for his followers as a thanks...well, who wouldn’t want more of that sultry voice and glorious face

currently has about 4 million subscribers

Victor’s channel is kind of comparable to Junskitchen, a rather relaxed, casual atmosphere combined with exquisite, refined cuisine

if he feels like it, he does a voice-over, otherwise he just puts calm jazz, blues or r&b over his cooking

HAS done an ASMR special. low-key dislikes the video because he has to whisper voice-overs but people LOVE it

likes making all kinds of foods, but his channel features quite a lot of sweet foods and desserts because a certain dummy has a sweet tooth

a pretty popular feature during quarantine is Cooking w/ Sou, essentially a live stream where Sou (aka Victor) cooks a whole three-course meal while talking to and instructing his followers

his subscribers notice that he doesn’t really need editing to look clean during cooking because his technique is IMMACULATE

by the end, he’s made a themed dinner for two...which always raises a question mark

is Sou single? does he have a roommate? a girlfriend? a kid? WHAT?

after getting your explicit permission, Victor addresses the situation in one of his recent Q&As

“Why do I always make dinner for two? I have a fiancée, she edits my videos in her spare time. She works as a producer. *you wave your hand over the lens* Dummy.” he breezes over it like it’s no big deal even though he’s a tad nervous about exposing something personal like this

his fans blow up the internet, baffled but not entirely surprised that someone like Sou isn’t a bachelor

of course, some leave hate under the video honestly, people who do this to celebs who start dating are HORRIBLE

most subscribers are super supportive of your relationship and thank you for the editing that makes Souvenir such a well put-together channel...also did he seriously call his fiancée a dummy? such a tsundere!

sometimes, you’ll (well, your hands...we’re keeping a bit of privacy here) even be in the end shot of videos, munching away at the carefully plated food

one day, Sou will be making a video titled Wedding Cake.

Lucien

Lucien’s channel LucidLight is a tad bit all over the place

he’s a man of many talents, and his channel reflects just that

i’m not saying it’s a disorganized channel, because the theme is very much there - the uniform theme in Luci’s content is a cozy background, a cup of tea and a soothing thumbnail

i mean that content-wise, his subscribers don’t really know what they’re going to get next...he has a slightly similar style to the YouTuber simon plant

his content varies from interesting science theories to poetry reading sessions to ASMR to painting/sketching to cooking and much, much more

he has an heavenly soothing, smooth voice. it’s his trademark since Lucien doesn’t show his face on camera. ever.

doesn’t have a TON of subs, because his channel is a bit of a niche thing, but I’d say he has 1,2 million subscribers and 400k followers on his added ‘business’ Instagram

he holds a lot of live streams on Instagram/YouTube (i know Moments exists in the game, but that’s more like a Facebook or Twitter kind of app...) and is always shown with just his torso and neck in frame. the lives usually include some poetry reading and generally just having a nice, relaxing chat with his followers. they can last up to 5 hours at once, and YOU know it’s because he doesn’t need sleep like a normal human being, but his fans are still asking questions about his timezone

his subscribers are strangely fascinated by his mysterious, gentle nature and also incredibly obsessed with his large, elegant hands

his ASMR videos are often roleplays of Librarian Lucien or Professor Lucien explaining to people why their rest is important

other times, they include soft affirmations, positive whispers, finger fluttering, hair touching and maybe kissing sounds...

Lucien paints a lot too, although he works primarily with ink and pencil sketches. you’ll find a watercolour or oil painting somewhere, but they’re not his most prominent media

his art videos are usually silent, although he might say something once in a while. there’s always some type of solo instrumental music playing in the background.

he does educational videos about biology and universe theories, but will also have reading sessions about scientific books

not intentionally secretive about your relationship, but he’s not one to mention it either

the first time you appeared on screen was when he was doing another live stream. he’s in his office talking about a play, when you come padding in to bid him goodnight.

“Yes, indeed. Laura’s glass menagerie, as the play suggests, is a symbol of fragility. Laura herself is very frail, but her favourite—”

“Good night, darling.” your soft voice rings through the room. viewers see Lucien’s torso turning a little bit, a hand on his shoulder and a curtain hair appearing from the top of the screen. his hand moves, presumably to cup the person’s cheek, before a soft kiss is heard through the mic. “Sleep tight, my love,” he murmurs.

“Ah. Laura’s favourite glass figurine is the unicorn, which...”

people are in uproar, but Lucien is a strong-willed man who refuses to explicitly announce the nature of his relationship.

his subscribers stop asking after a while, because it really isn’t any of their business, and they now know Lucien’s a taken man

you kind of appear on live streams accidentally a couple more times, but nothing’s really changed about Lucien’s content

the only thing he WILL say, and this is purely to give you credit, is “Ah. The background instrumentals in my art videos are played live. Yes, my lover’s very talented.”

you guys are the mysterious, talented, soft-voiced power couple of YouTube

Gavin

Gavin’s channel probably starts as a joint channel with you, something like Rachel and Jun

it’s relatively obvious from the start that Gavin from Birds&Cops is in a relationship, since you guys have a vlogging-style channel

your channel is filled with gym vlogs, travel vlogs to other countries and a lot of self-defence and sport at home videos.

you guys also post a lot of funny vlogs talking about your day, going on fun dates, of course food vlogs in restaurants, all that stuff...

you often sit down and talk about your life, and maybe you’ll even do a mukbang during it for someone so fit, Gavin does eat a lot of food.

Gavin’s channel didn’t blow up right away, because vlogging channels aren’t exactly unique, and he looks like the typical ‘straight boy with a girlfriend’

but he started gaining followers after people noticed how cute and blushy he acts, and how incredibly respectful and caring he is towards you

one of the most popular videos is Boyfriend Does My Makeup and it’s adorable. Gavin’s handling your face with so much care, and comments like “I know what this is, I’ve watched you do it many times.” or “Babe, does it hurt? Should I be more gentle? I’m sorry...my hands are rough.” make everyone SWOON

toxic masculinity left the chat. Gavin loves taking care of you in any way, whether it’s getting pads, chocolate and hot packs during your period or braiding your hair

in those yoga/celebrity fitness routine challenges, subs get to see Gavin in a tight singlet and sweatpants/shorts, and it’s HOLY

you’re very much aware of the attention Gavin receives from female fans, and how lucky you are to have found such a sweet partner

Gavin will usually see this type of comment while scrolling and will turn to you and go “Babe, you know I’m the lucky one here, right?”

anyways, a feature that you do to show fans the extent of Gavin’s sweet personality is Pranking My Boyfriend, where you set up the camera for a harmless prank like pretending to have a nightmare (similar to channels like Farina Jo)

that particular video was so fun to shoot, because it ended up with Gavin softly singing a lullaby to calm you down in his arms

“Baby, wake up. I’m here, you’re safe.” Gavin knows how to deal with panicking people, but he hates this prank afterwards because ‘he didn’t like seeing you in pain’

fans squealed. Birds&Cops gained like 50k subs through that video. the channel’s currently at 999k subscribers

overall, it’s just a really lovely, family-friendly channel

Kiro knows his way around the web, alright?

not even just as Key, but he’s had a YouTube channel since the age of 15

his channel, CtrlAltChips is a hit with many people of many, many ages

he streams gaming sessions on Twitch and posts them on his YouTube channel afterwards

other content includes (primarily) covers & original songs, simple talking videos, thrifting & fashion videos, mukbangs and candid dance videos in a studio

think of chloe moriondo, doddleoddle, Victor the Drum Destroyer and Cat Strat

alternatively, for the ARMYs here, think of Jeon Jungkook as a YouTuber

Kiro has about 18 million subscribers, which is A LOT, but he’s been on YouTube for 7 years and he’s made a name for himself as a super likeable and bubbly guy with an angelic voice and killer moves

you’d think he’s just a cute boy when he sings acoustic covers, but his dance moves suggest that he’s not THAT cute

also how does he stay so fit with all those snack mukbangs?

he has a segment named In Our Kloset where he talks about social issues (because our boy uses his platform for good) around the world while customizing (not just pins. we’re talking patches, sewing, painting, embroidery) thrifted clothing to his liking. at the end he holds a little fashion show with his new outfits

after a while, you’ll see many of his outfits in giveaways or on sale for charity. Kiro tries to give back to his fans as much as he can, and how better than by sharing a piece of his unique clothing with them?

a great singer and performer. has held actual concerts before and has an actual music career (author-nim leaves it up to you readers to decide whether this is his idol career or some other musical project)

keeps his private life PRIVATE. he knows how the internet works, and he knows there’s no way he can keep your relationship a secret forever, but he’s not about to expose it to the world because of that reason

keeps tabs on information or rumours regarding you and makes them vanish

he’s simultaneously the most open and the most secretive out of the four boys. his fans know his favourite colour, what type of underwear he wears (trunks. Kiro wears trunks.), his birthday,...

but they know nothing about his past, his location, his close social circle or his family (teeechnically he’s an orphan but ig we’re talking about his mentor here. the blood of the covenant blah blah blah...y’know?). Kiro protects his loved ones fiercely

for someone who’s kept so secret, you’re actually really involved in Kiro’s virtual persona. you’re usually behind the camera during his In Our Kloset videos and are in charge of extra research regarding topics so he doesn’t spread any misinformation

you also give pointers during filming (of course, these bits are edited out) because Kiro tends to trail off and get distracted when sewing

another way you’re involved is setting up the food during mukbangs. you have a great sense of aesthetics, so all of his videos in general will go through you.

while you like being low-key in Kiro’s life, you don’t want him to feel like he has to protect you from all the hate.

he doesn’t particularly love keeping you a secret either, and it makes him feel guilty because he doesn’t want you to think he’s ashamed of you. he could never be.

you guys give it a good chat over how you’re going to announce it, and he just ends up making a video titled Miss Chips where the two of you sit down and talk to the camera
