My Japan Trip : Stamp Book
If you go Japan, get your own notebook to collect stamps that can be found at train stations, museums, temples, aquariums and other tourist attractions. They're usually placed on a small table.
Although sometimes the stamp may ran out of ink.

Fuji-san and Tōdai-ji, both 6”x4”, watercolour and ink on paper, 2021.
These were painted for a commission a few months before I moved to Japan. I’ve since seen Fuji a number of times and went to Tōdai-ji in September. I don’t remember my exact thought process while making these but I know I was excited but also a bit bitter that I was waiting at home painting Japan instead of moving here.
I think I’ve seen too many paintings of Fuji to ever want to paint it again lol but it really is such a satisfying subject to paint. My friend dragged me around to so many different viewpoints in Yamanashi in March so if I ever do want to paint it again I have tons of reference pics at least
I wish I had exaggerated the size of Tōdai-ji a bit since it’s impossible to capture on camera. It was strange visiting after having spent so long staring at photos to get the painting right and realizing that I really didn’t manage to capture it lol. Like I’ve been to so many temples at this point but Tōdai-ji is still breathtaking.

奈良の鹿角きり | Nara deer antler cutting
A ceremony in Nara since the 1600s. The deer’s antlers are cut to avoid them hurting each other and park visitors during mating season.

Todaiji (東大寺, Tōdaiji, "Great Eastern Temple") is one of Japan's most famous and historically significant temples and a landmark of Nara. The temple was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan and grew so powerful that the capital was moved away from Nara in 784 in order to lower the temple's influence on government affairs.
Until recently, Todaiji's main hall, the Daibutsuden (Big Buddha Hall), held the record as the world's largest wooden building, despite the fact that the present reconstruction of 1692 is only two thirds of the original temple hall's size. The massive building houses one of Japan's largest bronze statues of Buddha (Daibutsu). The 15 meters tall, seated Buddha represents Vairocana and is flanked by two Bodhisattvas.

The Daibutsu Face and Japanese Tote Bags!
Since my first tote bag in Japan last year, I have become weirdly obsessed with them. Here in the US, I always relied on backpacks to carry my stuff around: books, etc. Now, I like using tote bags instead: they are lighter, easier to carry and hang up, and they force you to think about what you actually need to bring. In my recent visit to Japan, the family and I went to stay at the cities of…
