Endlessly refreshing the Barkley Marathons updates to see if my girl Jasmin Paris makes it onto loop 5. About 8 hours ago she was on track to be the first woman ever to finish the race.
You might remember her from previous ultra running achievements like "fastest woman to complete a Barkley Fun Run (3 loops, 60 miles)" and "overall winner and record-smasher of the Pennine Way Spine Race while expressing milk for her baby at aid stations".
For the uninitiated, Barkley is the most straight-up insane race that exists:
Limited to 35-40 attendees
5 loops totalling 100+ miles
Entrance requirements are...unclear, but include an essay section and a scavenger-hunt-type item
Course is unmarked and very mountainous; GPS navigation not permitted
Invented to mock James Earl Ray, who managed a measly 12 miles in the area during his prison escape
Most people don't finish the race, or even the Fun Run (only 10 people were left running as of last night, and that was a record high)
"Checkpoints" come in the form of finding a book that's been hidden on the course and tearing out the page matching your race number
Start time is whenever the organiser lights his cigarette

a long weekend of crewing and pacing for my friend David at Red Dirt Ultra 100K in Louisiana. A group of us drove down, stayed at a farm bnb and explored Kisatchie National Forest by supporting during the race and sweeping the course the next day to take down markers.
It was close to a 40 mile weekend for me 🏃🏼‍♀️

Ultra Summer
It's here... It's finally here. Summer in the PNW!
The past month has been filled with a lot of adventure - thankful every day for the beauty that is a Northwest Summer.
The first weekend in July, myself and 4 friends set out on a 40 the mile Devil's Dome loop in the North Cascades. It was steep, it was hard, but it was gorgeous. I don't have too much to add that the photos don't show. Truly an amazing place, with some good company. We ran, we ate, and soaked in the views. The weather was good enough to cowboy camp, situated perfectly in a saddle along a ridge line. 12/10 would do again

Sometimes adventure calls but all your friends are busy and you go solo anyway and it’s a little freaky to not see a soul for 10ish miles in the backcountry, but then you’re blessed with a majestic 12-point bull and the lakes are stunning and you dunk your head in all of them and it is one of the best mountain runs of your life. 🤩

The last few miles of an ultra marathon
The last few miles of an ultra marathon
When legs give out and arms won’t swing I know one thing for sure: my mind will be my everything and I’ll be able to endure. The pain will try to stop me as discomfort rears up in great scale But all I have to do right then is just move forward on the trail. What’s between my ears today pushes me to reach tomorrow – my mind will get me through what’s tough — and my body knows to…

This is pretty much how the 200 mile ultra I ran at Camp Half Blood went.
I was doing it totally alone, no one made it an official race. In fact, Chiron was like “why do this?” The next time anyone saw me I was walking in a zig zag and singing “Open The Eyes of My Heart Lord” in the minor key. Will came over to me and said “are you okay” to which I yelled “I LOVE THE PAIN” and passed out. Only made it 192 miles. 😔

I love watching ultra runners. They can do some tremendous things that require both endurance and mental toughness.
I am not a runner. I like to walk, jog, and lift weights. But, I am no Kerry Ward, Courtney Dauwalter, or David Goggins.
Also, the Barkley Marathons are really fun to watch, even if you don't care about running. It's put on near where the guy who shot Martin Luther King Jr. escaped prison in the woods. And, the guy who puts it on is a kooky, old, eccentric dude.
He has people search the forest for book pages in the mud and rain. The race is so intense that the runners start to hallucinate and nearly pass out. And, if you quit the race, a dude plays taps on the trumpet.
Ultra running is actually really interesting when you start watching it. Plus, it motivates you. If these people can run 200 miles, then I can walk around the block!

Eight years ago I woke up one morning and decided to divorce alcohol. I put on a pair of running shoes (the only pair I owned) and went for a short run. Eleven thousand miles and 20+ ultramarathons later (and still going) I’m in the best physical, mental and emotional condition of my life. What a ride! I’m grateful for the small circle of friends who have been with me during this journey, my own spiritual work through Buddhism, black coffee, and a relentless passion to better who I am. To quote one of my favorite philosophers: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” ― Ferris Bueller.

I can't help shake the feeling that doing an UTMB event would be a lot of fun. Or maybe it's my overactive brain coming off a two week long illness that is a little mad in the possibilities it sees for my body as it no longer is in constant pain. But really though, it would be fun, wouldn't it?

Selecting My First Goal Trail Race for My 5k Walk/Run Program and How Being In Recovery Has Impacted My Training
Selecting my first goal race, and how being in recovery and 12 step has impacted getting back into fitness without overdoing it. Care to join me IRL or virtually in training? Comment below and let me know. #trailrunner #recovery #getoutside
What’s the point of doing something without having a long-term goal in mind?  As a striver in recovery, I struggle with this question a LOT.  On the one hand, I strive with a goal for my efforts in mind. It’s where I shine! On the other hand, I can get pretty controlling with my training. A bit obsessive. Ok, maybe more than a bit obsessive. Controlling things was an area of both strength and…

Supporting a local legend on his Wainwrights Round - C6
Supporting a local legend on his Wainwrights Round – C6
As is becoming the norm now I am awoken by the sound of a van pulling up, doors opening and voices breaking the morning air. I get up and out of the van to be greeted by a couple getting ready for the day ahead. We exchange pleasantries and I get everything ready for when Dougie and the others coming in. We’re parked Inbetween some cottages separated by a fence. The ones above us, Rake Cottages,…

Race Report: Kettle 100K
Race Report: Kettle 100K
As I contemplated my running goals for 2022 I knew that one thing I wanted was to attempt a race distance over 50 miles again. I hadn’t completed a race over 50 miles since my Savage 100 race in 2019 and it was about time I get back to some longer distances. As I was attempting the Tuscobia 80 on bike my wife was graciously signing me up for the Kettle 100K so that I didn’t end up on the…
