Moments ago, there had been a metal threshold bar in the floor of the doorway, separating the carpets of this room and the next. Now it is wrapped tight around Banner’s wrist, splitting into thin strips that start to coil up his fingers to try and pry them from Magneto’s jaw.

Only one man has ever held Erik like that and lived, and even he didn’t live forever.

He ought to have used something stronger- there’s metal everywhere, he just has to feel for it- but the bar had been closest and when Erik is afraid in this way he sometimes cannot think before he reacts. That is why the threshold bar is trying to dig into Banner’s skin. That is why it strikes and strikes at him like a threatened snake, split into so many pinprick points like some horrible, sharp spider-like thing--

Only seconds have passed. But to Erik - Erik, who tastes ozone and feels a rage that doesn’t seem to fit here, in this place, this time - it feels like minutes. It feels like an age.

“Get-”

The movement of the metal seems frantic, but perhaps it’s only a consequence of the way it’s shaped, thin and sharp and many-pronged.

Food, this wasn’t what he or his family would call food, practically a sin to consider it edible but here he was scarfing it down. But he paused mid-chew as the words from the other met his ear. “Uh, thanks?” Guarnere questioned with a furrowed brow. “I think?”
