Shiro has to watch 4 teenagers throw themselves into life or death battles and fight everyday with the state of the whole universe on their backs. Of course he’s right there with them but he watches them grow up in war and diplomacy instead of grades and prom and first kisses.

Every mission he thinks of the missed classes, meals and snacks, and phones calls to home they’ve all missed. How many days, months, and years go by before they’re not kids anymore. Soldiers now.

Shiro blames himself for the team in space, away from the only family and home they’ve ever known. A part of him knows it was only supposed to be an exploratory mission and they could’ve never known but another part will always blame the dream of space
