Many complain that the war is poorly written and poorly staged in SPOP. I think I know what the problem is…

SPOP is clearly inspired by Steven Universe and My Little Pony for the general tone and characters. Now these two series are SLICES OF LIFE (at least partially for SU), often presenting the daily and normal life of the characters, it is therefore normal that the atmosphere is most often light and that our characters want to enjoy the life. And that moments of crisis are more occasional than common…

In its narrative framework, SPOP should not be able to be written as a slice of life: It's war, there are victims and our characters are the main ones concerned and responsible. But since the plot and characters are written as slice-of-life stories, the fight against the Horde is just a small, everyday task, and our characters act like it's a game… (Even the original SPOP from the '80s has a better excuse for being written as a slice-of-life story, as the Horde has already conquered most of Etheria, and our heroes are taking their mission of resistance much more seriously.)

you may be right. i haven't watched MLP but SU is definitely more than just slice of life. however, while SU does include the themes of war, in the present timeline, they're not going through a war. the war happened when rose was still alive and it's only showed in flashbacks, meaning that a time switch does not affect the plot as much. and while SU has its shortcomings, i do think it addressed a lot of serious themes with the weight they deserved.

spop however just does what it wants. the princesses whine about having to fight off the horde robots, as if it's a household task they're not fond of doing. in s4, glimmer complains about not being able to join in the fun with bow and adora, as if fighting a war is just a "fun adventure". it's as if the plot was written by a bunch of 11 year olds who have no idea how war works or affects people. it's just "my princesses fight the evil and save the day!"

Okay bc I can't shut up I'll write about my opinion on every ship on that poll/their eligibility. Under the cut naturally

Dazai Osamu/Nakahara Chuuya or skk or whatever: one of my friends hates them so they deserve to be here

Crowley/Aziraphale: agree on the overexposure level of annoying but aside from that they seem like a cute couple. however i think the fans were largely unbearable and there was problems with antisemitism

Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson: nothing wrong with it but definitely inescapable and super fucking annoying, sorry. i'd have no objection to it being canon but people just went way too crazy for it and now idk.

Reylo: absolutely deserves the win

Star Butterfly/Marco Diaz: this shit was fucking messy. the creators handled it terribly. from what little i know. it can stay

Spamton/Jevil: it can stay only because spamton is annoying as fuck (as was the plan surely) not bc of him even but bc of everyone else (as was the plan surely)

i follow a diverse group of bloggers who talk about all these different things and some of these have not shown up even once, which means they're not nearly as annoying as being on the poll would lead you to believe. i have a good sample size and if i've never heard of your ship, it shouldn't qualify.

I can't even figure out whose character/POV I was most into in that fic. it's got to be a tie between micah and linda but something was so REAL about angella and her depiction is so true to what she was like in the spop show

thank you! angella is a complicated figure tbh, like she loses her temper and yells at her child (who yells back, but can you blame her) and shes quite cold to Adora at first but reasonably so, and she's also usually so calm and composed when her anger hasn't risen. idk she's got layers and i usually prefer to honestly "watch her reactions from afar" rather than be in her POV, but she had to be a part of the interlude in both ways.

(sidenote, but part of her Whole Deal in the show is obviously the loss and trauma of Micah's death and the war as a whole, so that's dialed back in most modern AUs, but in the back of my head i was like "oh, to emulate it somewhat her parents had a tragic death in this AU" but that's not something that'll ever appear in text XD)

Angella and glimmer still fight, but micah is also very good at diffusing the situation, adora just lowkey panicked the first time she saw it thinking she was back in a home Like That again, only this one was better at putting on a front. she gets uneasy every time they fight until pretty much the end of senior year. like it takes her two years to really be comfortable, and even then it can still hit her.

well i almost wrote three scenes from micah's POV before remembering to spread things out more so i guess him by default LOL. listen i just love his Soft Dad Vibes in this au (and canon, but he doesn't have the same trauma in this au he has in canon) and i don't get to play with him a lot.

That said, I really liked writing Linda and Rose's POVs and just slip in mentions of how they think of each other to flesh out that dynamic. It's something I can pretty much do whatever I want with since they aren't in the show.

yall really just love a milf huh 😂 honestly when i was coming up with linda and rose's personalities i was like "rose is going to be soft like scorpia, but like turn it up to 110%. maybe she even cries over her houseplant when it dies" (even if scorpia's generally a softie, she did try to kill people with no remorse on multiple occasions lol) and "linda is going to be where scorpia gets her goofy, loyal, sweet of heart and dumb of ass side". they're their own people, but i built them out in reverse from scorpia because they are the ones who raised her and thus shaped her.

and of course they're head over heels for each other, so as far as rose is concerned linda's hugs can cure absolutely anything, and linda is absolutely smitten with how sweet and kind rose is and thinks she could solve world peace. and of course they both love scorpia to no end.

unfortunately bow isn't really getting a lot of airtime in this fic because while he is around, he isn't around as much as Everyone Else who has been seen so far because he doesn't live with any of them (and doesn't sleep over nearly as often as catra does). the focus of that interlude was very much family, so their friendship didn't show up much. he just didn't end up getting a lot of scenes in the fic because there's not many bfs scenes in the fic, usually just catra/adora or one of them with a family member.

(all that being said, bow and adora actually have a very similar place in Glimmer's family, where they are both a part of it largely due to their connection with glimmer, but of course bow also has a family of his own. Angella and Micah would take them both in and fight tooth and nail for them in a heartbeat, but they don't really see either of them as their children, even if they're in the family. Angella is still :eyes emoji: hoping for Bow to be her son-in-law. micah is too, of course, but he's a little more chill about it 😂 He also has more paternal instincts towards Adora than Angella does, but that's because they bonded quickly while Adora and Angella did slowly. Their dynamic is a bit like what they had in slas at first tbh, but that was years past by the start of the fic).

honestly i'd like to play with bow more in this verse, but so far i haven't had any scenes i really thought of centering on him/his dynamic with the others. i still need another scene or two at the end of chapter four though, so ill think about it. no promises tho, because i already have some other rough ideas.

i didn't put bow in the character tags because i knew he wasn't going to have enough scenes to justify it. i usually need a character to appear for some nebulous percentage of the fic before i tag them, which is why a lot of my fics which have an ensemble cast only tag catra and adora because there just aren't enough scenes with the others to justify it. conversely i might have a short oneshot where they all speak a decent amount, so i tag them all even though overall they get less lines than they do in a long form au for which they aren't tagged.

hm. HM. well, it won't be part of this fic, ill say that much, because i know how i want to end this and im doing it dammit XD however, i'll keep it in mind

i'm kinda curious how well sul fits into the typical shonen anime tropes, considering i haven't watched a LOT

ruby i'd say represents a shonen protag fairly well, considering she's been inspired by such since the beginning

jay is kind of difficult to pinpoint; they're definitely the "edgy one" but they're not a rival. they're not even a villain either; i think a lot of their tropes i definitely pull from western characters. if i had to say something i'd say they're meant to represent the flip-flopping of the typical shonen protag by being inspired by ed elric rather than [insert toy anime here], but even that comparison isn't super strong.

blaze is definitely the "best friend of the protagonist" archetype; those characters that dont matter to the plot as much as the protag and their rival, but still are there to make the protag feel less alone and have someone who is their sort of anti-lancer. blaze's growth is simple but still very much There

rina is also another character i think pulls from western media as much as jay. she definitely fits the criteria for "the girl", of the group, but that's a huge disservice as to what rina SHOULD be in the story. considering cassandra from tangled, catra from spop, and jinx from arcane are all influences that my beta reader bestie said i should look into for her reference... yeah, she definitely does fall under a lot of western influence. then again, out of the shonen anime i've watched, i havent been SUPER wowed by female characters (with the exception of fma but thats a given)

turqbalt also fulfills the role of "best friend of the protagonist", but mixed into the typical "red oni blue oni" and rival. i dont wanna make him too angsty or brooding (derogatory), so maybe he's not the PERFECT edgy rival archetype, but i'm also still trying to play into how calming the color blue is as a color, considering thats the point of his character representing the color blue

amethyst DEFINITELY is the dark magical girl trope; i'd love to research more about what that means. i think with it being a mahou shoujo trope ame is definitely not as edgy as shonen rivals can be, and her being the "dark one" of the paladins is definitely portrayed in a different way than cobalt's "edgy rival". definitely a trope i wanna look more into; see what works and what doesnt

finally, rose is meant to be more of a majou shoujo protagonist; yeah i said i'd be talking about shonen tropes but her being a shoujo protag is meant to contrast ruby being the perfect shonen protag. they have similar core values of friendship, love, and heroism but go about them in different ways; however it's not like they'd butt heads about it, but understand each other in a way different to the others simply because no one else has the weight of "protagonist" on their shoulders as much they feel.

overall i want sul to FEEL like an anime, but still break enough of the tropes because i still am a western creator who enjoys aspects of western creations while still respecting how much i enjoy anime ways of creating

Genuine review of high guardian spice

Unfortunately due to the admittedly poor marketing, most of the reviews for HGS are gonna be in bad faith, just the typical “woke bad” nonsense arguments, but this one will be my attempt at a mostly balanced review. Might be a bit all over the place but I’ll try and cover everything.

Characters

One thing about HGS is that it’s very by the numbers. If you’ve watched little witch academia you’ve already watched this. HGS didn’t do anything new frl, at least with the main characters, which is fine as long as the writing is strong but the writing was pretty so-so. The mc is Rosemary, or Rose and she’s the typical happy go lucky protagonist, the most interesting thing about her was that her mom was a famous magical girl warrior named lavender who disappeared years before the story begins. Her mom also has supreme character design, she looks like a cross between spop she ra and utena

Anyways there’s not much to say about Rose or any of her friends. They all fulfill a pretty standard role, Sage is the insecure childhood bsf, Parsley is the brash, forward one, and Thyme is the stoic, quiet one, she’s also best girl. Your enjoyment of these characters will largely depend on if you enjoy the character writing and their interactions bc you’ve probably seen these archetypes before and they go through the same character arc.

So yeah the mcs were run of the mill, but the side characters were honestly really fun. Some of them were archetypical, you got the snobbish bully girl but she ends up calling her mom a thot and that was hilarious, but you also got underused archetypes. There’s a character who’s trans and one who’s in the closet and you don’t ever see those types of characters in these types of shows so it was nice seeing a positive storyline develop about gender identity that kept me far more intrigued than whatever parsley was going through.

Story

HGS is a magical school story not a magical girl story despite what the name suggests. The girls learn more about themselves through a setting of a school rather than have a monster of the week to fight. There’s an overarching plot about the mysterious disappearance of lavender, the rot, and some evil Organization that’s in the background but it’s mostly about the interpersonal relationship and drama between the characters. Which is fair game, it’s the first season so they’re establishing all the characters and their arcs. The plot doesn’t really start until a little more than halfway through the season and it’s not bad. The tonal shift, which I will get into later, is kind of jarring bc it goes from 0 to 100 very suddenly and a more even tone would’ve helped the shift from lighthearted to serious but a lot of western cartoons do the exact same thing these days. It’s hard not to compare this to little witch academia but it takes so many cues and plot points from that show it’s kind of crazy. It’s not a bad thing ig I just wish I didn’t have to see almost the exact same story play out when there’s so much more you can do with the magical school story.

Tone

Aside what I mentioned prior , I think one of the biggest things holding the show back is its tonal inconsistency and I honestly think if it was upfront about the type of show it was from the jump it would’ve been much better for it. I wouldn’t say the show is dark but it’s also not for kids bc of the occasional swearing and light gore moments. The show tries very hard to appeal to children and then a character will randomly say shit or asshole and it’s like huh? If this show is supposed to be for teenagers then a more evenly dark/edgy tone would’ve suited it far better. Be up front that this is the type of show where the characters will swear and bleed from episode one bc it felt super jarring and out of place to hear them swear, even if it was occasionally.

Aesthetics

Not really equipped to talk about the animation so correct me if I’m wrong but from a viewers stand point it was alright. You can obviously tell where they took short cuts, especially in certain action scenes but other action scenes looked pretty good. Ig that’s typical anime budget. The ost was actually really good, I loved the background theme they used, I thought it was super charming and fit with the theme of the show. The opening and ending themes were awful tho and I skipped them everytime 😅 The art style was also decent, some of the characters looked good like lavender, Thyme, the demon teacher, and that trans masc teacher I forgot the name of. Some of them looked like extras from spop, and others looked like they were from how to draw anime books. It was kind of generic looking save for a few stand out characters. Forgot to mention the voice acting and dialogue so I’ll just put it here, it’s the definition of hit or miss. Sometimes the dialogue is good but the VA sucks, sometimes the dialogue is awful but the VAs carry it, usually it’s just okay so I’d say it’s like early RWBY quality. It doesn’t touch the funi dubs in any capacity.

Diversity

HGS has a so-so diverse cast of characters but the actual quality of representation was lacking. Way too many white characters and way too little lgbt+ characters for what is supposed to be “diverse”. Give me more than ONE black mc and lgbt+ characters that aren’t in the supporting cast, kipo and the owl house have set the bar high, anything below that isn’t good enough if you want to claim diversity brownie points. Trans rep was amazing tho I’ll give them that.

Overall

Most of the hate surrounding HGS is an overreaction from maladjusted weebs. It was not a dumpster fire nor was it the next madoka magica it was just average. Worst sin it committed was being boring and dialogue heavy. Otherwise an even tone and less generic characters would’ve worked wonders and probably could’ve reached a decent fanbase if it were marketed probably. If you plan to watch it, go in expecting something average and you might be surprised here or there.

show suggestions for owl house fans during the hiatus

1. tangled the series

where to watch?: disney+

how long?: a movie + 3 seasons

summary: rapunzel is adjusting to life as a princess, but when she sneaks out beyond the kingdom walls alongside her best friend cassandra, she touches magical black rocks that cause her hair to grow back and she embarks on a journey to learn about the mysteries of the black rocks and her hair.

this was actually a tts blog for a while during the time the show was airing, so of course i’ll recommend it!! it’s truly a beautiful show with stunning animation, interesting lore that expands on the original movie, lovable characters, and incredible music.

2. rwby

where to watch?: rooster teeth

how long?: 4 original character shorts + 8 seasons/volumes (9th volume coming later this year)

summary: ruby rose, weiss schnee, blake belladonna, and yang xiao long attend beacon academy, a school where they train to be huntresses and protect their world from monsters called the grimm.

again, as a current rwby blog, i’m gonna recommend it!! please note that it’s not a kid’s cartoon, so it can get dark and heavy with some of the violence, but it’s not inappropriate in any way. there are so many characters and ships to love, plenty of complex storylines to follow, absolutely banger musical soundtracks, and a very unique 3d animation style (it gets better after v3, i promise).

3. kipo & the age of wonderbeasts

where to watch?: netflix

how long?: 3 seasons

summary: after being forced to flee the burrow that she’s known all her life, kipo oak searches for her father on the surface of a post-apocalyptic world full of giant, talking, mutated animals.

kipo is such a beautiful but underrated show!! it’s been praised for its lgbt+ and poc representation, and is the first kid’s cartoon to ever have a character verbally come out as gay!! i saw someone describe it as a mix between spop, amphibia, and toh and that’s actually a perfect description for it. it has stunning animation, great music, lots of great rep, and a really cool plot premise.

4. amphibia

where to watch?: disney+

how long?: 2 seasons (season 3 premiering in october)

summary: when anne boonchuy and her friends open a magical box, she’s transported to the world of amphibia, where she meets friends and foes while trying to find her friends and a way back home.

i just finished watching this show and it was so cute!! it does get pretty dark towards the end of season 2, but a lot of it is fun frog adventures with plot buildup. the animation is great and a lot of toh fans are also amphibia fans!!

5. gravity falls

where to watch?: disney+

how long?: 2 seasons

summary: when twins dipper and mabel pines spend the summer in gravity falls, oregon, with their great uncle stan, dipper discovers a strange journal and together, they start to uncover mysteries about the town.

most owl house fans are probably familiar with gravity falls, but i thought i’d recommend it anyways!! dana terrace (the creator of toh) worked on this show and the creator, alex hirsch, is her boyfriend and is also involved with the owl house (voice of king, hooty, etc.). it’s such a fun and heartfelt show and is definitely similar to the owl house, but unique in its own way!!

Uno reverse card, which homestuck character watches spop!

John: enjoys it when watching it with friends but is otherwise not really interested in the show, cant recall a single character name and calls every character shera (sparkly shera, cat shera, scorpion shera, etc)

Jade: thinks its fun! Doesn't care much about the plot but its fascinated by the whole ancient technology mixed with magic deal. Entrapta is her fav. Impulsively growls everytime catra acts particularly cat like.

Dave: actually likes it a lot, but wont admit to it. More accurately, he will insist he likes it ironically cuz "fuck yeah dude show about buncha magic princess sign me up" but everyone can tell he enjoys it, specially cuz he keeps correcting john everytime he calls anyone else shera.

Rose: similar to dave but opposite. Dislikes the show in principle and thends to critique it instead of actually watching it. Then dave tells her about the ancient unethical magical lore and shes intrigued. Then daves shows her a gif of scorpia's back (we all know the scene) and she starts watching it. Ends up having lota of fun psychoanalyzing every character, specially glimmer.

Karkat: he fucking loves it. Watched the whole show like five times, but he doesn't give a shit about the action or the war or whatevs, he is here for the relationships.

He got an entire wall chart dedicated exclusively to following the fluctuations of catra and Adora's romance from pale to flushed to black and again.

He will loudly complain about glimmer being a shitty moiral to bow and not take account his feelings to anyonw listening (wherever they want or not)

He gets into shouting matchs with dave about whether entrapta and hordak are pale or flushed for each other.

He wrote a goddamn thesis on the romantic tragedy of catra opening up to pale feelings towars someone other than adora, while scorpia was obviously showing a flushed interest in her.

Scorpia is his fav, btw. He ask kanaya to make him a cosplay and everything. Vriska is VERY offended by this because SHES A SCORPION NOT A CRAB YOU IDIOT!!!!!!!! But he cant hear her over the sound of pincers being fucking awesome.

Unbeknownst to everyone, Karkat actually starts lifting weights, a poster of scorpia lifting a tank as inspiration/goals
