Tasty Beauty Watercolor by Meera Rao #repurposed #SmithsonianEngagementCalendar2021 Week 8 February 14-20 The 'Beautification of America' 6c block of four stamps January 16, 1969 on display at the National Postal Museum matched well with the beautiful yellow mustard flowers from our garden during this week in February 2021. But then we grow them also for the tasty leaves for cooking :) It is always exciting to get fresh greens in February from the backyard! "The stamp block, designed by Walter Dubois Richards, was part of a commemorative set in recognition of First Lady Lady Bird Johnson's 'Natural Beauty' campaign. These stamps honored the accomplishments of Mrs. Johnson's initiatives which encouraged involvement from government and local community organizations. After 3 gouache sketches, I was wiped out and in need of some serious nourishment. In the mood for some rich French food, but most restaurants around open at 5 PM. So I drove to "Bistro St-Germain" in Seal Beach and feasted on their exotic delicacies - Escargots, Frog legs, octopus and beef bourguignon poutine. They did have French beer, kronenbourg 1664, but I opted for some golden German ale instead. After coffee, apple tart, and Chocolate mousse, I felt very satisfied of another productive sunday. My appreciation to Aidan, who got my vote for the best waiter of the year!

Here is a long forgotten sketch from my trip to Turkey last year (for work). This sketch was done on a visit to Anitkabir on my day off. I think this sculpture is supposed to represent three Turkish women mourning Ataturk’s death. I wasn’t able to work on this sketch for long, as I was told to move along by some security officials – so I added the colour at home. Sun-11-Jun-2023
