“If you do not try, you will never know.” One of his arms comes up to squeeze her shoulder, pulling her back against his chest. “Besides, I know what you are capable of. We all do. It is a great and terrible burden to carry on one’s conscience, but I also know you are not one to run from what is difficult. Neither of us do.”

She sighs and she leans back into him.“How did you do it?”

It is a simple enough question; however, it holds a complicated answer. “I do not know if I am honest. Only that I continued on one day at a time. However, it got easier at some point.”

“When?” Her eyes sparkle with hope as she looks up at him.

“After you walked into my life.”

She shakes her head at him. “Because it is your birthday, I am going to allow you to tell me pretty lies.”

“Perhaps it sounds cliché, but it is true. Life became easier once you were beside me.”

“More like pushing you like a stubborn goat up a mountain, but I appreciate the sentiment.”

Ulfric chuckles as he presses a kiss to her temple and moves to the wardrobe. “We will continue on together, and you may lean on me for whatever strength I have left.” He reaches up his hands to massage his temples. He can already feel the headache there pounding behind his eyes with what is to come. “I am not sure what I will have left after dealing with Lord Corolius and the council this morning.”

“I’d quite like to Shout him off the top of a mountain.”

“And I would love nothing more than to see that, but unfortunately, he is an integral part of the council.”

Dahlia’s brows furrow into a scowl. The last time she had the displeasure of interacting with Levus, they had gotten into an argument. Typical. However, she knows that Ulfric has played the game of politics almost as if from the cradle, and she trusts his judgement more than anyone. “Would you like me to accompany you?”
