When you spend months failing to identify this weird little miniature-apple-looking fruit you keep finding in the dirt, far away from any tree that ought to be making apple-looking fruit.... ...of course there's a gall wasp involved 🤣 So I am working on the Lucky Maggot Ball charms, which are the product of gall fly larvae infesting goldenrod stems. But these are so darn cute, I want to make something out of them too even though I haven't heard of any particular folklore around oak apple galls before. Garden Journal

I need to do a better job this year with my garden journal then I did last year. My garden took a beating last year due to some things that I did wrong. The summer here burned a lot of my vegetable garden. Some of the veggies that we use more often I did in pots but need to find a better place to keep them. I need to finish the garden cart I made so that I can move the plants around during the heat of the summer. Which I think will help some of the plants I have in pots grow. 

I am also starting to grow an indoor houseplant garden as well. I do need to get some new pots for my indoor plants so that I can start transplanting some of them when it starts to get warm out. I do need to start writing down all the plants I have bought the last two days so I know which ones will grow and which ones will not. I also need to start propagating some of the plants as they get bigger so that I can trade them for new plants. Maybe this can turn into a nice side hustle to make some extra money.

Gardening is probably my favourite way to honour, and actively work with Spirit/Deity/higher self etc. And the thing that got me interested in gardening in the way long ago was the huge variety of strange and beautiful plants you could grow that you can’t get in the grocery store, or even the farmers’ market. I decided to limit most of my seed purchasing to a single colour pallet in order to limit my choices when deciding, and this season’s colour is purple/black. How witchy✨ 😏

Through some neat synchronicities, I’ll be joining @breelandwalker in  documenting and planning my garden for this season and talking gardens and tagging mine #witchygarden2020.  Oh and I’m in zone 5b in southern Ontario, so most of the plants I look at will be suited for that zone unless otherwise stated.

Foraging for beautyberry. Pro tip: get a few leaves and crush them up a little in your hands. Tuck them into your socks, boots, belt, cuffs, wherever ticks might hitch a ride. The leaves will help deter them from getting too comfortable. Hoi again!

So I thought maybe today I could tell you about my garden!

I have kinda a brown thumb but I love plants so much that I keep trying to keep them alive. I planted my outdoor stuff over Ostara, but uhhh... I live in Minnesota. They got frozen.

I’m hoping that my overoptimism won’t have fully killed my plants but just in case, I had leftover seeds and I was reading about how you can use strawberry containers and similar plastic containers to make indoor mini greenhouses so that is what I did today! I thought it would be fun to give you a rundown of what I’m growing and what their correspondences are. Several of the correspondences overlap, so I’m just listing the unique ones. If you’d like a more detailed list with the overlaps feel free to let me know!

I planted several herbs:

Rosemary: purification and fidelity. Rosemary can sub in for any other herb in spell work.

Thyme: cleansing, courage, healing

Lemongrass: lust, strength, growth

Basil: marriage, happiness, money

I planted some food:

Blue pumpkin: wishes, prosperity, love

Strawberry: romance, luck

Carrot: masculinity, fertility

And some flowers:

Butterfly weed: butterflies, home, protection

Purple Coneflower: inner strength, protection from poverty, royalty (purple is a royal color) I’m growing these for Zeus

Poppy: abundance, sleep, dream work. I’m growing these for Hades

Sunflower: joy, sun, confidence. I’m growing these for Thalia

And that’s my garden! Or at least it will be once everything sprouts!

Hopefully it grows well and my brown thumb doesn’t destroy everything lol

My favorite rose is blooming in full force. This is the Rosa 'Eden' rose is named after the French poet Pierre De Ronsard. Its a climbing rose and is slowly making it up the side of my front deck. This is the second year it has bloomed in full force and looking at it everyday brings my heart such joy. Not much is currently blooming in my garden yet this year. We had a cold snap that resulted in many plants going dormant again. Nevertheless I know in a few short weeks my garden will be full of beautiful blossoms. I can't wait to pick up some more plants when it is safer to do so. Despite the lack of blooms, my rose is a shining star among the weeds. Like all roses, the Eden rose represent love, friendship, and devotion. Because its a climbing rose, it also represents strength, courage, perseverance, determination, and endurance. I think these are all traits we need during these unfamiliar times.
