Does Anachronism Matter in Fantasy?
It can feel absurd to talk about anachronism in fantasy. After all, the moment we step into the fantastic, any attempt to match reality goes out the window, right?
Well, no, not really. Anachronism can make a difference, for good or for bad. To understand how, we need to think about its context.

This morning's writing focus: Is it a Good Idea to "invite" your town's British POWs to your July 4th celebration if your local hooligans plan to tar, feather, and hang an effigy of the King?
This song is the mood.

you know what i think in general the pool of ancient egypt-set fiction could be improved by not only a moratorium on narratives about kings/queens everyone already knows, but also by no longer allowing any of the gods the job of villain. exceptions i will allow are 1. angry thoth who is angry because humans slighted him (see setne khamwas) 2. apophis because he isn’t a god but a pre-creation entity (but NO narratives where he influences any of the other gods just to have a big ““reveal”” that it was him all along) 3. re just being his normal dickbag self and potentially working against the characters without being a villain

Germania Magna, 8 CE
Thusnelda, princess and warrior of the Cherusci, chafes under the Roman occupation of her ancestral Germanic lands. High taxes, subjugation, and barbaric punishments have cowered too many of her people.  Thusnelda will now defy her supposed Roman masters. When her long lost childhood love, Arminius, returns in a legionary uniform at the right hand of the Roman territorial governor, Thusnelda is disgusted by his betrayal. But beneath his polished Roman facade lies the soul of a warrior who never forgot his homeland. Together Thusnelda and Arminius light the spark of rebellion. Not everyone wants to see Rome ousted, though, and their biggest opponent may have the power to stop the rebellion before it starts. Thusnelda's father. Betrothed to the prince of another tribe, Thusnelda must resist Arminius' advances as she struggles to choose the cause of her people over the desires of her heart. If she makes the wrong choice, they risk having no army at all when they face off against three legions in the infamous, audacious Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.

K.M. Weiland:
Learning how to write historical fiction requires all the usual techniques of good storytelling combined with excellent research skills. Good historical writers must also prove empathetic enough to understand and dramatize characters whose lives were often very different from our own, while still evoking the humanity they share in common with us.

A really good tool for historical fiction writing would be a version of Francis Grose's Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (and other related compilations of old words and phrases) that is arranged by definition and subject matter so a writer can easily find the most fitting old vocabulary to enhance their writing.
