He'd do anything to get Al's body back, but he won't do this.
"Seems doable," Ling says, reading over Ed's shoulder.
"Ling!" Al says.
Mei pats Al on the shoulder, but it's more absentminded than anything. "The south, maybe? Property values have been getting a little high."
Ed is going to stay calm and not screaming or weeping or strangling Ling with his bare fucking hands. Hand. He won't even use the automail to keep it fair. "We are not killing a country's worth of people just so you can be immortal and become emperor."
"Well, not just," Ling says, his eyes flickering to Al, which almost makes Ed not hate him. "Besides, country is an exaggeration. A city at best. We're Xing, Edward, we're not the size of your paltry little Amestris. If we start another war they might not even notice. Father does like a good war."
He opens his mouth to explain all the extremely obvious reasons that they're not going to kill a city's worth of people either then closes it, caught on something else Ling said.
The Amestrian population is almost the exact number needed for a true philosopher's stone.
It could be a coincidence. But he doesn't exactly have a great track record with those.

What’s your review on JTTS? If it’s like 100 chapters I do not have the energy unless it’s JTTW quality.
Well if you open the link then you can see it is about 18 chapters with around 100 pages. It's not that long but that doesn't take away from being more boring than usual. It follows Huaguang and how he seems to piss off someone in heaven, runs away, avoids capture, still gets reincarnated, and repeats the process about two more times. Some highlights in the book are seeing him marry Princess Iron Fan, fighting Thousand-Mile Eye and Fair-Wind Ear who turned to a life of crime and then turned to be his subordinates. There is also an interesting segment where he helped two demons escape a prison in one of his own escapes in a past life and just so happens that one of those demons becomes his mother in the next life.
Honestly, only the latter half of the book is all that interesting cause it follows his third and like most exciting life where he tries to save his demon mother from feeling the urge to eat humans. He goes to heaven to steal heavenly peaches to finally quell her hunger but he disguises himself as Sun Wukong to do so. That is where Wukong comes back into the story (he was in the first chapter and isn't seen until like the last two chapters) when Wukong has to arrest Huaguang to clear his own name. And his daughter Yuebie Xing comes along to help.
Overall I remember that there were more boring bits to slog through than exciting ones cause I wasn't really that engaged with Huaguang as a character, but I am glad that I read it at all, and honestly, it wasn't that long really. Huaguang does go on some fun adventures and maybe people can take enjoyment in that at least but I never felt he was that interesting, but he was quite funny when people pointed out his crimes and he would be offended as if HE DIDN'T COMMIT THOSE CRIMES HIMSELF. His audacity is something else. At least the end of seeing Yuebei Xing in action was well worth it to me.

JTTW Chapter 8 Thoughts
Chapter Eight for the @journeythroughjourneytothewest Reading Group! There’s a lot going on in this one as we meet most of the pilgrims and get their brief backstories. CW: There's a picture of cicadas under the cut.
The imagery near the start of flowers raining down as Buddha holds a lecture reminded me of this scene in a Cultivation Manhua I’m reading, where basically that happens as well.

Something I would like to mention upfront is this Manhua having some glaring problems, most apparently and arguably most outrageously the depiction of native people. Also some homophobic comments, but those are much less prevalent. So if you are interesting in reading it, keep that in mind.
Back to the chapter at hand, I’m honestly starting to get kind of annoyed by how often people belittle themselves. “Untutored/stupid”, “untalented” please get a grip all of you and stop selling yourselves short even as a formality or whatnot. Something like this can get internalized so fast if one is not careful that it should not be a constant formality anyway.
On a more enjoyable side note the “brows of new moon shape” is a traditional eyebrow make up style! And “ruddy lips” or in the J.F. Jenner translation “scarlet lips”, were quite the popular colour in the Tang Dynasty as well.
Our scripture pilgrim gets literal plot armour! It’s quite funny and also interesting to see this be an actual point in the narrative.
Also first mention of Golden Cicada! Aside from where the name comes from, I genuinely wonder if he personally likes cicadas. There certainly are plenty of pretty ones out there! I mean look at them!

Though how casual Buddha is about basically using torture to convert people… that’s just not a good look for anyone. Plus how nonchalant he goes like yeah, the scripture pilgrim is going to suffer, but hey he’ll like it! Does make you squint.
Moving on the Flowing Sand River in real world geography is actually made of sand! It is located at the western end of the Gobi desert. To be precise “Weak Water” refers to the it being quicksand. Courtesy of the German translation for this little fun fact!
So knowing this, Sha Wujing’s depiction in Xi Xing Ji/The Westward as well as the Flowing Sands River there being in an actual desert works really well with this. Aside from being incredibly cool in concept and execution of course.

During the fight I imagine Guanyin just watching from the shore with the Ancient Chinese equivalent of popcorn.
Also once again, the colour mentioned is not simply green! Nor blue. But rather verdant [青 Qīng].
Knowing they already sent for a few scripture pilgrims it is no wonder that Buddha asked Guanyin to survey the route this time and make sure it’s actually doable. That is probably also the reason he is giving the scripture pilgrim plot armour this time around.
Though Sha Wujing actually playing with the skulls is kind of cute to me. Maybe he’s even fidgeting with them instead of simply playing. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me given how much stress he must be under due to that weekly stabbing.
Ao Lie being punished like this for an accident. It was an accident for crying out loud! Discipline him a little if you must and teach him to be more cautious especially when doing anything with fire. But don’t just execute him! Ao Run is definitely not getting father of the year that much is certain.
Speaking of them, Sha Wujing’s punishment isn’t much better either. Accidents happen. Particularly the recurring stabbing is way over the top, that’s just too much.
Though Zhu Wuneng’s punishment I can actually agree with for a change. I mean flirting with Chang'e who’s whole ordeal is being faithful to her husband? That is just plain stupid and if you can’t control yourself while drinking, don’t drink. There really is no excuse here.
In all fairness after the whole Havoc in Heaven everyone was probably pretty on edge and the Jade Emperor ruled more strictly because of it at least for a while. But on the other hand if he would be so worried about a coup or something, ruling like that would lead to the exact opposite of what he intends.
Why would one commit a coup? If they are unhappy with the one who rules currently. So just make your people happy and rule with fairness and kindness and you should be fine. The Jade Emperor hasn’t been kind to Sun Wukong, which is what ticked him off to begin with.
Coming up on the Five Phases Mountain, Guanyin casually composing a poem is such a mood. When you are inspired, you just have to get it out.
However you cannot tell me she didn’t give the other two matching names with Sun Wukong on purpose.
Guanyin not giving the monkey essentially a headpat when she did the others though. Very sad, especially since Sun Wukong probably needed a little affection.
Flower Language Fun Fact! Don’t gift someone duckweed. As duckweed has no roots, in Chinese flower language it goes against the values of family and unity.
Also note the wisteria! We’ll see it again soon, and when that time comes I’ll explain what it means. For now all I’ll say is that it’s not an arbitrary flower.

Ling Yao x Abused Reader
This is technically the last part of a series that my sister had asked me for at the beginning of my account but that I forgot over time and I apologize for that (I may write on my own about this fandoms in the future I have several ideas but now I'm going with this).
Genre: Headcanons
Reader: female
Warnings: Mentions of child marriage, implications of physical and mental abuse, bad parents, egregious and alarming age difference, Hurt-Comfort, Fluff, Happy Ending.
To be fair, these two already knew each other in Xing.
(reader) is the only daughter of the war secretary of one of the many clans that were under the emperor's orders, the Han Clan.
But despite this, her father was not very interested in teaching her his work or making her stand out in general, he wanted her to become a "proper society lady" so he forbade her to come into contact with activities that could distract her from that task.
Her mother teach her, giving exhaustive lessons in etiquette, posture, manners, preparing tea and giving it a try (even if you didn't like it, since according to her "that would please your future husband"), teaching cooking, throwing dishes bad things in the trash or your head, etc.
Your parents prohibited or banned any type of material or activity that incited rebellion or that seemed "inappropriate for a girl." Learn to fight? "Boys don't like girls to have muscles" Politics? "Keep quiet you look prettier" Any type of physical activity that was not related to what is traditionally feminine? "It's not attractive to be running around like a beast."
And sometimes it was just too boring.
So you went out to see REALLY interesting things, like fights!
That's how you initially met Ling.
You both knew each other superficially through your parents, but when you started showing up to watch the Yao Clan's training, he became curious.
From time to time Ling would go straight to talk to you, thinking that maybe you wanted to join the fighting practices, but you couldn't really risk getting caught, so you would just talk or watch the other clan members train.
You went to Ling when you needed a break from the "lady" life your parents imposed on you. It was very liberating.
Ling, even at a young age, understood that kind of pressure quite well, not only having to fit into the mold but also having to constantly compete with his brothers and sisters.
Thanks to this they made friends quite quickly. You run away a lot more often just to be able to play with him. He was the only boy your age you REALLY got along with after all.
Your parents, even if they were against it, couldn't do much once you stepped on Yao land or found out WHO you were playing with, so it was AMAZING for you to finally be a girl.
Ling was more about acting before thinking, while trying to keep a cooler head, which made for a fun dynamic to watch.
At some point you even gave in and Ling taught you some basic fighting moves! Nothing great but at least it was a lot more fun than your dance classes.
Ling would even secretly pass you books about politics or books that your parents had forbidden you to read (things that you shared very lightly) and you would finish them in DAYS (but not without first giving Ling a kiss on the cheek as compensation, for his delight).
I think it's a little obvious that Ling may or may not have had a case of a childhood/youth crush on (reader) while they were growing up, but after a certain...situation, he didn't have the chance to really realize it.
Because one day (reader) simply disappeared.
She stopped going to training, she didn't go to the places where one normally found her to play, she stopped showing up.
What Ling didn't know was that (Reader)'s family had come up with an idea to end this rebellious phase and benefit once and for all now that she was finally of age.
Arrange a marriage, with the son of the emperor of the Han Clan...he was an adult and you were just a teenager.
Ling only found out out of mere courtesy of the clan.
And for a couple of months it was a pain trying to contact you. Not because he didn't want to! But because your family (and new "husband") made it very difficult.
The clans themselves had a complicated relationship with each other, after the emperor get sick it was even worse. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't risk generating even more conflict.
Although he had a chance to see her before he had to travel to Amestris, at a "family meeting" where the Han clan was.
Where would it be (reader)
....part of him is grateful he went and part of him wishes he hadn't.
Because when Ling came and looked for (reader) and found her, it was like seeing a ghost.
(reader) had become somewhat taller in recent months, she was well dressed and with several capes of makeup on her face, with a vacant and empty look, quite distant from the happy and unrestrained version.
She also didn't talk much before Ling arrived. Or even when he arrived, but at least her expression changed, that made Ling feel a little better.
Luckily her husband was busy enough getting into discussions about the country's military with his other brothers that he didn't notice Ling quite close to his "wife."
Despite everything, Ling was happy to see her being just as friendly, but quite tired, they took the opportunity to catch up.
(Reader)'s husband...could be worse. According to her. It wasn't easy, it's complicated, he got angry very easily and his friends are... shameless. but (reader) had been able to survive the situation well thanks to certain charms.
Even if (reader) is trying VERY hard to maintain control, Ling can see the anguish in all of this. They comfort each other in the situation.
The time before Ling goes to seek immortality, he spends it making small secret visits to the Han house or rather, visiting (Reader).
Try to make them have good memories before you don't see each other for a while :')
Imagine Ling drops the "I used to have a GIANT crush on you when we were kids" bomb☠️
During much of her trip in Amestris Ling thinks about (reader), sometimes she even buys things that she thinks she might like there (accessories, a book, things like that).
I can even see Greed making fun of him for that when it takes over his body☠️
When he eventually returns to Xing, he is mentally preparing to see (female reader). By coming up with a plan, you may not be able to help (reader) directly, but you can definitely do it externally.
(Reader) is DEFINITELY very surprised when Ling arrives not only completely changed, without Wu, and with his sister from the Chang Clan, but also comes with IMMORTALITY ITSELF...he achieved it..
All the commotion of Ling's arrival and her triumph over her other brothers means that (reader)'s husband does not notice when she sneaks away, wanting to have a talk with Ling.
They don't manage to say much to each other, precisely because of the rush and urgency of discussing Ling's appointment, but at least she manages to give him a big welcoming hug, telling him that she misses him and that she's glad he's okay.
Ling freezes for a solid second before returning the hug tightly and pulling away. Temporarily.
(female reader) is also present when he is declared the new emperor some time later.
Knowing Ling, he, May and Lan Fan will probably look for incriminating evidence of adultery on the part of (reader)'s husband so she can divorce him without problems. They leave the evidence "anonymously" but (reader) can recognize Ling/Lan Fan's writing patterns very well.
Ling and (Reader) keep seeing each other at family events, which is hilariously awkward for almost everyone but them, since no one can REALLY say anything to Ling now that he's the emperor, not even (Reader)'s husband, who He only stands on the sidelines while his wife and half-brother catch up on the adventure he had in Amestris.
When (Reader) decides to divorce of her own free will, guess who makes it official? ;)
If we look at their current relationship, it's better than either of them would expect!
Ling was pretty depressed after Amestris, Wu and Greed, but at least (Reader) never fails to make him smile or laugh, which helps his mental health a lot.
You can even bring out your old habits, like embarrassing/angrying (reader) a little and see her expressions, it doesn't matter if she gets her butt kicked. It was worth it!
(reader) must be the most sheltered woman in all of Xing, and no wonder, although at least she always has someone to talk to ☠️
When (reader) goes outside with Ling they have to have limited physical contact for etiquette issues, but Ling always holds her hand or hooks her arm around hers to keep her close :3
Both at some point can talk more openly about their traumas and cope with them with each other's help lots of cuddles during bedtime on those types of days.
At this point they would be very lucky if (Reader)'s parents are even still in Xing after what they did to their daughter and Ling becoming emperor 😅
This man is cuddly as fuck! Sure, you have to reserve the PDA in front of the other clans for appearance and etiquette issues, but once you're alone or with privacy? Nothing stops him. Especially with hugs.
I think Ling would be very interested in his partner learning basic defense, especially with Lan Fan being highly trustworthy. Even if (reader) is contrastingly protected, she knows that she is never too much.
In short, very sweet love that rots your teeth❤️

Li Xing and Heichi have a very long and complicated relationship--as most siblings tend to have! When growing up, they both really looked up to their brother, Li Shen, who eventually became a General for Ao Guang's army. His success and exploits made them both wish to be soldiers as well! However, due to their physical differences and Heichi's poor health, Though Heichi was the older sibling, they would never be able to accomplish their dream. However, Li Xing was nearly immediately accepted into the ranks--causing a one-sided rift in their relationship that would not mend until years later. But Don't worry about Heichi--After becoming a doctor, he realized the last thing he wanted to do was to be a soldier after all. It was fair fate that didn't let him.

So best dealer @aysekira showed me some pics of Wang Xing Ye in the currently filming Marriage of Di Daughter adaptation.
I was already stunned how much of upgrade his look is in Kunning even from little we’ve seen of him so far as compared to Scent of Love where his look and his personality made me think of wet noodles. And then I saw this and I think my eyes are currently somewhere on the floor in Tasmania.

Ok, how is this the same man as the unbearably unappealing city lord in Scent? Why? How? Did he take the last parking spot from the PD of Scent? Stole the designer of Scent’s lunch? Trample on Scent makeup artist’s toes? I have actually seen a lot of these pics before and I still didn’t realize this dude and the scent guy were the same person!!!!
You can’t even say it’s a Yu Zheng thing because both Scent and Di are a Yu Zheng production!
What what what how!
Also, while I am fully shallow and admit that if he looked like this in Scent, I would have less of an issue with his being the heroine’s endgame even if he kept the unappealing personality and bland acting, I also realized he played the royal psycho antagonist in One and Only years ago and did a great job so it wasn’t just that they didn’t bother with his look, they didn’t bother giving him any acting direction either!
(To be fair, all three MLs in Scent looked awful. They look better on their terrible profile shots on MDL than they did in that drama. They did make Zhou Ye look like a goddess though so either those designers are only good for one gender or she’s gorgeous enough to survive them. Even money, there!)
