Neil Gaiman’s Asks: Reminders for Newcomers

Neil doesn’t answer any asks that he actively finds offensive or insulting. He will just delete them. If he answers an ask that you deem to be mean/rude/invasive etc, please don’t send hate to the original asker. Neil is not trying to put them on blast, and he doesn’t need you to fight his battles. If he answered the ask, then it likely didn’t bother him at all.

His answers will be blunt and honest. He’s a busy man and doesn’t have time to reply with long and detailed responses. People claim his answers to sound rude sometimes, but that is almost never the case, unless the original ask is just as rude. Even then, he’s usually polite about it. As said above, there is no animosity in his replies, which further proves that you should not harass the original asker. There is no anon option, which means most people are asking questions that they genuinely believe to be okay to ask and likely aren’t trying to be mean/rude/invasive etc. if their asks sound as such, you can perhaps gently reach out to them about it, but no one is thanking you if you take it upon yourself to send them hate, least of all Neil.

Don’t bother asking questions about Good Omens season 3, you’re not going to get an answer, and you shouldn’t get an answer. We don’t want any spoilers for season 3, we all want to be surprised and excited just as we were for season 2. In the same breath, I know it may seem fun for people to unlock new “lore” about Dottie and Sadie every time they ask something about season 3, but Neil isn’t replying as such because it’s a game, he’s replying as such to let you know that he’s not going to answer your question. It may be fun for you, but don’t bring that into his ask box.

Neil only answers the asks that he immediately sees when he clicks into his ask box. He has thousands of asks at any given time, so if he doesn’t answer yours then that probably means he didn’t see it. For God’s sake, don’t spam him with asks just so that you can get an answer, because you’ll probably just get blocked. If you don’t get a response, move on, and maybe try again another day. Don’t clog up his ask box anymore than it already is.

Don’t ask him to confirm your headcanons or your theories. He’s not going to and he doesn’t want to. He’s said time and time again that your headcanon is your headcanon and if it’s true for you, then you can consider it to be so. It’s none of his business what you decide about his stories or his characters that aren’t already in the original text.

Check his pinned Q&A before asking something that you think may have already been asked before. You’ll just be clogging up his inbox with stuff he’s already answered.

Lastly, be respectful. Don’t be rude or invasive or weird. He has the patience of a saint for dealing with tumblr’s antics but that doesn’t mean you can just test it to its limits. He’s a human being so treat him as such.

Don’t send Neil any fanfiction. He won’t read it. Legally, he can’t read it. This isn’t even just a gentle reminder of etiquette, this is straight up don’t do this.

Let’s make this easier. Let’s say that Crowley is water and light and Aziraphale is air and gravity. Now you just have to decide which one you need to survive here on Earth and you’ll be able to easily figure out who is better, Aziraphale or Crowley.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, how in heaven and hell combined does Beelzebub even tolerate Gabriel, let alone find him attractive? Personally, I doubt I would survive three minutes within a several-thousand-mile vicinity of him. Was he even intended to be a likeable person, to anyone?
