#i think it's also worth highlighting that afaik 911 operators are supposed to always stay on the line with you until you're safe #like if you're scared and alone the 911 operatir will stay on the line and talk you through it #(when i called 911 bc my dad was having a heart attack the operator stayed on the line talking me through what he needed to do and #then i think just like. random comments? about how they'd sent the paramedics and like. asking me about my family members? #i only vaguely remember through the haze of panic but it felt like i called 911 and relayed to him what they told me and then the paramedics #were there. even though they couldn't have gotten there as fast as i remember - but the operator kept me focused on them so i wouldn't #panic at a time when i was on the verge of a full-on panic attack.) #because that's part of their job - to keep you from panicking when you are in a hugely-stressful situation and liable to do so #so if you're (understandably) terrified of this situation and know that you'll be panicking - know that the 911 operator will be on the line #with you until you're rescued because they will not hang up on you and leave you alone and scared. they will *find* something to talk about #anything to talk about. to talk you through one of if not the most terrifying experience of your life. so you're not alone with it. #as far as i'm aware that's an important part of their job. to be a voice beside you when you're terrified and alone. #so even while you're waiting for the firefighters to get to you you'll have someone talking you through it. #hugely grateful for the 911 operators - underrated everyday heroes who do an underappreciated service for people at the worst #moments of their lives. they'll be there in your ear such that they make the time pass so fast it feels like the rescuers got there in the #blink of an eye. you may not remember their words later but you'll remember that a voice was with you. #anyway.

#tbh it is dependent on the fandom #in some fandoms 50 notes is solid #in others 250 is a flop #like a discworld meta that only gets 150 notes feels like a flop but my kanej fic getting like 60 or 70 something was ''yay!'' #but in general i'd even go lower than 100 as calling a post a ''flop'' #less than 50 is generally like. ''unpopular opinion?'' less than 25 is definitely a ''well then.'' less than 10 is a universal ''oh.''

it is literally almost 2am and im sitting here being scared of the united states like what the fuck there are so many people there!!!!! and they're all just speaking with their american accent like hello??? how do you not just laugh all the time. americans wake up and go to their american jobs and american schools that's so fucking weird. i imagine it as a fake place because it's where everywhere on tv is.

#i mean like. *some* american accents are distinct enough to tell apart but that doesn't mean you know where they come from. #like yeah a boston accent and a texas accent sould wildly different but i'm from the us and i can't tell a boston accent from a new york one #it's just like ''northeastern seaboard city accent'' #having lived in the south i can discern ''northern'' south from ''gulf-state'' south and louisiana and texas are their own thing. #(florida doesn't count.) #but i wouldn't expect someone outside the us to get anything except ''wow these american accents sound kinda different'' #like i can tell that there *are* regional differences in british accents but hell if i know where they're from #same with european accents like i can get spanish and the cliche kind of french #(although i'm told that this doctor at work who i could have *sworn* had a german accent is actually french? i guess maybe she's #from an area of france that's near germany?) #all i can identify are the accent stereotypes and i figure that like in the us that's sometimes accurate and often not #(it was always weird back home when people said ''you don't have an accent'' meaning like heavy drawl but i'm just. #everyone has an accent? saying you don't have an accent is like saying you type without a font.) #(your font may be generic like arial or times or it could be fancy/cliche like comic sans or papyrus but it's for sure a font.)

#politics #us politics #racism #a friend of mine also pointed out that one thing we seem to have forgotten in the modern age is that the *point* of a protest #is to get arrested. to be illegal and disruptive and in the way until they arrest you. and so the org is supposed to have a bail fund. #the point is to cause so much disruption that you get arrested for your disruption #not *violent* disruption - although mlk himself famously refused to condemn riots - but so much chaos and inconvenience that they #arrest you for disturbing the peace. and the org bails you out and it garners attention because of it. #although it doesn't have to go that far - and in today's age with the highly militarized police force it's dangerous - but when ''peace'' #is only given to certain people then disturbing it is the goal. not violently but by existing and getting in their fucking way. #a protest that's so polite and doesn't hold up traffic or get in people's way is easy to ignore. and the point is to be unignorable.

Fun little math trick I find really helpful: the ratio of a mile to a kilometer is within 1% of the Golden Ratio. That means that if you have a good memory for Fibonacci numbers (1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 89) you can convert pretty accurately by taking consecutive Fibonacci numbers.

For example, 89 kilometers is really close to 55 miles (55.3). Or, say you need to convert 26 miles to kilometers: 26 can be written as 21 plus 5, so taking the next Fibonacci number up gives 34 and 8, meaning it should be around 42 kilometers. Sure enough, it's 41.8 km!
