Wait what's a buildings fire evacuation plan if you aren't supposed to use the elevator to get down
#i think it's also worth highlighting that afaik 911 operators are supposed to always stay on the line with you until you're safe#like if you're scared and alone the 911 operatir will stay on the line and talk you through it#(when i called 911 bc my dad was having a heart attack the operator stayed on the line talking me through what he needed to do and#then i think just like. random comments? about how they'd sent the paramedics and like. asking me about my family members?#i only vaguely remember through the haze of panic but it felt like i called 911 and relayed to him what they told me and then the paramedics#were there. even though they couldn't have gotten there as fast as i remember - but the operator kept me focused on them so i wouldn't#panic at a time when i was on the verge of a full-on panic attack.)#because that's part of their job - to keep you from panicking when you are in a hugely-stressful situation and liable to do so#so if you're (understandably) terrified of this situation and know that you'll be panicking - know that the 911 operator will be on the line#with you until you're rescued because they will not hang up on you and leave you alone and scared. they will *find* something to talk about#anything to talk about. to talk you through one of if not the most terrifying experience of your life. so you're not alone with it.#as far as i'm aware that's an important part of their job. to be a voice beside you when you're terrified and alone.#so even while you're waiting for the firefighters to get to you you'll have someone talking you through it.#hugely grateful for the 911 operators - underrated everyday heroes who do an underappreciated service for people at the worst#moments of their lives. they'll be there in your ear such that they make the time pass so fast it feels like the rescuers got there in the#blink of an eye. you may not remember their words later but you'll remember that a voice was with you.#anyway.

Fun little math trick I find really helpful: the ratio of a mile to a kilometer is within 1% of the Golden Ratio. That means that if you have a good memory for Fibonacci numbers (1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 89) you can convert pretty accurately by taking consecutive Fibonacci numbers.
For example, 89 kilometers is really close to 55 miles (55.3). Or, say you need to convert 26 miles to kilometers: 26 can be written as 21 plus 5, so taking the next Fibonacci number up gives 34 and 8, meaning it should be around 42 kilometers. Sure enough, it's 41.8 km!
