Late Stage Capitalism and Star Trek
Since Star Trek series are, to some extent, a reflection of the current time in our world that the series is/was made (whether in themes, costuming, characters, etc.).
It does sadly make sense for new Star Trek series to be the way that they are. I mean think of it, we are in late stage capitalism.
Originality and artistry has been pushed aside for the sake of creating fast, and consistent financial capital.
Of course the star ships look like Genius Bars, of course the costumes lack flair and are primarily black or sad beige. As we progress in late stage capitalism we feel the binding pressure of forced conformity.
It only makes sense that the series would dilute the philosophical foundation we saw in the earlier series. TV and film since its inception has always been a part of the spectacle but now it is expected that each piece of media is its own spectacle. The cost of being a spectacle (to the degree late stage capitalism has forced TV and film to be) is the loss of rich narratives with vibrant story-telling and unique characters with depth.

The very fact that every TOS reboot is afraid to depict the closeness between Kirk and Spock in the same way it was depicted originally is a devastating reinforcement of how gay that shit was

There should have been an episode where someone tries to harm Dr. Bashir, and Garak secretly goes out of his way to protect him.
Of course it has to be something like a murder mystery, where in the end Garak says "My dear doctor, you sadly suffer from extraordinary imagination.
Let me assure you, while I enjoy our weekly meals, my capabilities of plotting, as I believe you called it, secret murders, just to protect a loose acquaintance such as yourself, are highly exaggerated.
I really hate to dissapoint, but there never was a real threat. No secret supremacy cult longing for your enhanced genome, no assassins endangering your friends, and no dubious plot to lure away the good constable from the station.
Would you really believe that I go out of my way and endanger my reputation and occupation as a humble tailor on this station, mind you, just to play cloak and dagger like you do in your playful little holosuite programs?
Frankly, and I dislike to be this honest, I don't like you THAT much.
Until next week. Julian 😉"

WAIT okay I don't know how to word this at all but basically the way we perceive speech sounds is through like. different frequencies are amplified or dampened by the ways we shape our vocal tract and we hear those differences in like which frequencies are louder and which frequencies are quieter and that's how we recognize different phonemes. or something. so if like aliens have a different hearing range and/or differently shaped vocal tracts they could have an entirely different phonemic inventory than human languages??? like shrimp colors but it's alien phonemes???? this might seem like a really obvious realization but like those guys could be distinguishing vowels based on formants we can't even perceive!! their hearing range could start above 5000 hz and they wouldn't be able to hear the difference between any of our vowels!! enough with giving klingon uvular plosives or whatever to make it sound ""exotic"" that shit should be UNPRODUCIBLE with a human vocal tract and UNPERCEIVABLE with human ears!! no wonder they need universal translators when your ears could be physically unable to distinguish between alien phonemes??? sorry I'm realizing that this really is an incredibly obvious thought just couched in overly technical language but I'm excited about it nonetheless. spock's surname is unpronounceable bc it's got a bunch of consonant clusters? NO it actually has secret vulcan phonemes distinguished by differences in frequencies above the human range of hearing so u can't even perceive it correctly let alone pronounce it. cardassians have a hearing range significantly smaller than humans so they physically cannot understand most human languages...

one of the best tips for Real Life that I’ve ever picked up is to always highball your estimate whenever someone asks you “when can you get this done by” by about 25% (if you can get away with it). that way, if it ends up being harder than you thought, you’ve got extra time to figure things out and if you were right about how much time it takes then you get to look like an absolute genius instead of just a simply competent person.
what you may not have realized is that I learned this crucial piece of life advice from an episode of Star Trek where Scotty is telling Geordi that whenever he told Kirk something on the Enterprise was at full capacity, it was always only ever a notch or so below full capacity so that Scotty looked like the god of all engineers when he was able to magically hack the warp drive to run a little beyond what he’d told everyone else was “full capacity” and honestly that one throwaway gag from Star Trek has changed my life.

you know garak had devoted himself to julian while he was on drugs.
the most interesting thing’s that he never ever un-devoted from julian after healing from drugs
