in other news my blood is absolutely HOT at some of the reactions to the university protests that i've seen from students at my college on yikyak. lots more pro-palestinian sentiment than i would've expected considering i'm in the deep south, which is good, but. also a lot of "please keep any protests you want to stage cute - we don't want our graduation sacrificed!" like. first thing shut the fuck up, but second thing. every university protest i have seen thus far HAS been peaceful, up until the goddamn riot police were called in! it's so disgustingly individualistic it actually blows my mind.

i really do hate how unsurprising the response to the protests in support of a free palestine on university grounds are. i'm seeing a lot of outrage on twitter to the police being even called in in the first place - which don't get me wrong, outrage about that IS a good thing - but it seems like a lot of shock is also going around, which. yes, it is shocking, but it most certainly isn't new. the police have never been on our side, hell the entire government, regardless of the party in charge, has never been on our side. peaceful protesting back in 2020 was met with tear gas, and the same thing is happening today: sniper rifles are being trained on students to ensure that. what? they don't support palestine too hard? or more accurately at all?
all of this said, though: it is easy to be cynical. it is easy to be pessimistic, and hopeless, and in some cases, apathetic. but it is important to keep hope alive in situations like this one. they want to squash it, so that we all give up and forget and go back to easier times. but it is so so important to never stop fighting.
i really hope that this time, that hope does not burn out too quickly.
