Problems Surrounding B&B
Growing up my favorite princess was Belle. In fact, I think she still is to some extent. I really liked her/ the movie, not only because I was obsessed with France and she looked more like me than the other princesses, but she read books and was the smart girl in town. I enjoyed all of the magic and how she continually turned down Gaston. I liked that she was close to her father and decided to do what she wanted regardless of what society thought of her.

I never thought much into her being held captive because I just assumed he was angry and holding up their deal he made (I know, I know). I felt like they truly liked each other because both of them were disliked by other people and accepted each other for who they were. Not to mention he loved her enough to let her go and see her father.

One thing I hate is when people would say that she just had Stockholm syndrome and that is why they end up together. However, if these people actually learned more about this syndrome and then look at the story, they would then realize they are not completely true when making that argument. It feels as though many unqualified people make these claims without proper understanding.

I guess everyone can be a doctor on the internet, but I digress. Even in the cases of Tangled and The Hunchback of Notre Dame these characters are not truly being affected by this syndrome. The syndrome requires a person to have a life before being held captive. These characters were abducted as babies. A YouTube video I thought explained this in a somewhat humorous way helps explain what I am trying to say better. It’s not my favorite video ever, but it gets the job done.

Now don’t get me wrong, after getting older I did realize this movie is problematic. There are layers that make this movie very gray. However, I do still appreciate the commentary on society’s faults.

A Good Cinderella Remake
The movie “Ever After: A Cinderella Story,” is an interesting take on the classic fairytale Cinderella. While this movie does have some historical figures featured in the movie (Such as Da Vinci, and the Brothers Grimm.), it is fiction. The story is similar to some of the originals (Mostly Grimm and Perrault), but the characters are more than one-dimensional archetypes. A link to the movie description and trailer here. The movie follows the character Danielle and how she balances her home life with her false life as a noble.

She lives at home with her evil stepmother and two stepsisters. One thing I like about this movie is the character development and how each character has a personality beyond the basic archetype. In Danielle’s father's last moments of life, he professes he loves her the most out of everyone in the world.

This makes the stepmother Baroness Rodmilla jealous of the girl. Due to Rodmilla’s lavish lifestyle, the family goes into debt. Due to these negatives, the Baroness brings to the home, Danielle is forced to be a slave to her stepmother and sisters.

One interesting thing to note is that only one of her sisters is inherently evil to her. Due to favoritism by the stepsister's mother, Marguerite is hotty, jealous, and downright evil at times. Not to mention completely spoiled. On the other hand Jacqueline, the other step-sister is kind, awkward, and typically kind to Danielle and the other slaves. She will only sometimes hide in the shadows when she feels threatened by her mother and sister. However, she is considered family to Danielle, while the other two are just cruel masters to her.

This is an amazing movie with plenty of rich history, complex characters, and beautiful imagery. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves fairytales and emotional rollercoasters.
