Once upon a time, a soap maker and a ceramicist collaborated on THE PERFECT SOAP DISH. And it’s here! @fox_pots out of Austin TX (my old haunt!) made the most gorgeous, earthy handmade soap dish for your little soapies to live in. Scroll to see the perfect natural speckled-egg look and excellent craftswomanship. I requested this durable glaze because I thought it would be versatile to fit any bathroom decor, and compliment my natural, rustic soaps. And it has tiny rubber feet for total drainage! Todays #marchmeetthemaker prompt is “materials”. Well, ingredients that are really relied upon at Beanblossom Soaps are all natural, plant based colorants! Today I’m infusing #annattoseed and #turmeric into warmed coconut oil to give my soap a vibrant, rich orange color. I know it’s easier and cheaper to use micas or synthetic dyes to achieve a wide color spectrum, but at the end of the day, I find it WAY more beneficial to avoid adding extra synthetics when it’s not necessary. It’s also really satisfying and interesting to me to work directly with materials directly from our earth. I’m talking seeds, roots, powders, leaves….it’s amazing what’s out there! So my pallet is rapidly expanding the more research I do. Today is day 16 of #marchmeetthemaker and the prompt is #goals . Today was a special day for me, even though nothing special in particular happened. I fulfilled and mailed out some orders and made three 5 lb batches of soap, and did some research. But I’ve been setting tiny goals for myself the last year to get to a day like this. Goals like, streamlining my production by master batching oils, learning how to infuse oils with botanicals for all natural #colors, research on sustainable ingredients, little things that add up to a better product and a more efficient, calmer workplace. Starting a business can feel like putting out a fire on the regular, scrambling and not knowing what to do. But today, I calmly went through my to-dos, thought about what to make with this terrazzo soap, made soap, washed soap dishes…absolutely nothing special! Day 10 of #Marchmeetthemaker! Today's prompt is "Storage". This is how I store my soap as it cures - on a wonderful, low profile custom-made 8 ft tall shelf made by @austin_g_waldo ... He made this as a custom order almost 6 (or 7?) years ago, and it's one of my favorite things in my studio. I'll never get rid of it! It's perfect.
