found a cow's leg-bone (shoulder down) in the middle of a field with flies still flying around it, and thought 'man what a waste'.
It's not a waste! It's nourishing the flies and later on the beetles and the worms!
Death is just the ceasing of a single organism as we know it. Bacteria, insects, and the earth itself live on, folding the material we borrowed into something new.
However, you can be one of those creatures who makes use of an animal after its death. Pick up bone. put in pocket. done

Always check your pockets before putting clothes in the wash or you might miss the dead fish you stuck in there a couple days ago

what did you use to preserve that coyote heart ๐Ÿ‘€ i dont know where to start with wet specimens but that seems so simple and cool
Just rubbing alcohol but I may have made some mistakes
Tumblr media
The jar isn't airtight because I have string poking out of it, which are now covered in yellow jelly, while the heart is exposed to air and turning some awful shade of gray.
I think the fabric thread is wicking the rubbing alcohol up from the jar into the air, where it evaporates and lets contaminants in.
Look up "wet specimen in alcohol" or "wet specimen" tutorials so you know what you're doing. I certainly don't!

What do you use to drill and attach those bones? Would it work for smaller ones?
It does work for smaller ones! Look up "[animal] articulation tutorial" for step by step process.
Tumblr media
What I have going for this deer is multiple sizes of wire, from 9 gauge to 24 gauge weights, and a piece of rebar for the spine.
I use hot glue to stick non-weight-bearing parts and to be a placeholder for where I will drill and wire things in the future. Hot glue sets instantly, is easy to pull apart and is easy to remove with rubbing alcohol. This makes it good for temporary fabrication but not so good long term.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For long term, you will want to drill holes in the bones and glue wires between them. This is much stronger than glue and adds a small degree of posability. It's SMALL though, so pick your final pose before you start drilling. Skeletons to not have hinges, but rather slide and rotate within sockets, which is impossible to do without the cartilage, flesh, muscles etc.
Posable, manipulatable skeletons will have much more visible wires and springs and are a whole other beast than simple articulation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This joint isn't going much of anywhere but that's ok because I drilled the holes to connect it right where I wanted it to stay in the final pose.
For big joints and the spine, I used a steel-epoxy mix since those have to bear a lot of weight.
Smaller animals can use tiny holes, thin wire, and glue. If you're careful to take the tail out before all the connective tissues dissolve, you can pose it naturally by soaking in water, posing, and drying in position.
Tumblr media
In Very small animals, the connective tissue throughout the skeleton is thin enough to dry out without rotting. Meat will turn brown and cartilage will turn yellow, so it's not the cleanest look, but I like it. There's a bit of gluing to do but if you're careful in the cleaning process, the only wire you'll need is one to pose the spine. Pose when wet, let dry, and glue the remaining bits together.

This deer is my first full articulation as sticking rodents in orbs takes considerably less drilling.
Remember to decide on your pose before you start drilling!

This is not the correct way to attach ribs to vertebrae, but I'm building a sculpture not an anatomic skeleton so I get to do whatever I want

Spare ribs!
Tumblr media
A specimen made up with parts from multiple individuals is called a composite. I only have a few ribs that for-sure belong to this deer (right) so I'm gathering all my extra unclaimed ribs to fill in the gaps (left)

Bro I wanna reblog all this shit cause itโ€™s interesting and beautiful as all fuck but I donโ€™t wanna traumatize my followers :(((( know that I love and appreciate this whole blog even tho I wonโ€™t reblog much
Get a sideblog! This is a sideblog for my main and also my artblog because I post a lot of freaky stuff. But I've seen vulture culture blogs that are 100% reblogs and just being fans.
You dont have to be a vulture to appriciate the culture. Liberate yourself! Collect things that make you happy! Imagine having a blog that you can scroll through that's just 100% niche content chosen specially by yourself for your own happiness.
Use it as a pinboard of inspiration and cool stuff. Not everything is a broadcast.
I reblog lots of stuff to my main, including gore and body horror among pictures of beautiful flowers and political commentary. My followers know this and can choose to follow me or not. On my art blog, I am careful to tag everything disturbing because I have thousands of followers who want to hang out for the clean stuff but can't stand seeing cartoon people melt into puddles of sparkly goo (Which I did not initially tag as body horror, but I was asked to by a squeamish follower who still wanted the rest of my content but did not want the melting. It wasn't a huge hassle to tag it even though I didnt consider it disturbing. There's a limit of course but that's an easy thing to tag for.) Sometimes it's your followers responsibility to block tags to keep themselves comfortable so you can be you.
On this blog, I post disturbing stuff and guts and tag it with gore and animal death. That way people can still follow me for aesthetic shots of bones in soapy water without seeing worms crawling through exposed skunk flesh.
Your blog exists for you, not your followers. But it sounds like you have a following that is not prepared for frightening stuff. You could start by warning them for several days/weeks to block content they dont want to see or unfollow, but it might be best to start a new sideblog.
Tumblr sideblogs are remarkably easy to maintain, reblog to, and keep separate. I was very surprised when I started my art blog and it wasn't a hassle at ALL. Recent improvements (tumblr remembers which blog primarily makes new posts and which one primarily reblogs) have made it even better.
Have fun and curate your experience! Thank you for taking care of people who aren't down for gore. That's very compassionate and is the responsibility of everyone who posts commonly triggering content. But there are multiple ways to take care of people so make sure you explore them!
Give your followers the option to either unfollow you, block tags, or just not follow a new blog. Engagement with the world is not all-or-nothing, make a space in it for what you truly enjoy.
