I'm taking donuts to my favorite rescue squad/firehouse tomorrow AM before work because I need to do something that feels good to do this week. I've done a lot of good things for animals today, but the kind of good things that make you feel sick to your stomach, catching the enlarged lymph nodes, confirming the gut feeling about osteosarcomas, euthanasias, end of life options and hospice counseling, assisting in emergency cases that came in as minor problem visits and escalated; if your cat seems off, take them to the vet, I'm not even joking. They're so stoic and one of my patients today came in with a presenting complaint of tail mutilation with a bladder the size of a grape fruit (74mm according to our ultrasound software) within about 30-90 minutes of rupturing and small sediment fucking filling his bladder once we got him Tom cat cathed and drained.

The Lord Has Risen! Alleluia! Alleluia!
I hope you all are having a blessed Easter. One of my favorite Holy Week traditions outside of my Church duties is rewatching my favorite classic films in addition to my family's tradition of watching the corresponding Charlie Brown Special for the holiday being celebrated. The movies are pictured above and I'll go into them, why they're a part of my Easter festivities, and what makes them interesting reflections on Holy Week.
1. Jesus Christ Superstar; I started off with this on the evening of Good Friday at a local indie theater event alongside my Dad. Now, my Dad was once planning on attending Seminary, but has largely left the Church behind while remaining faithful after one too many scandals and hurts from the Christian community in my hometown. This film started as a tradition with him on every Holy Saturday growing up. It remains a favorite. While scripture tells us the other apostles story of Judas Iscariot's Betrayal, Jesus Christ Superstar tells this story from Judas's point of view.
It casts Judas and Mary Magdalen as two sides of the same coin, and shows the love both of these early followers had for Christ. It shows Christ as both a Holy man and a man conflicted by the responsibilities he has been saddled with. To be honest, I don't think any adaptation has managed to humanize the betrayal, The Christ, and the Apostles the way Jesus Christ Superstar does.
2. It's The Easter Beagle Charlie Brown: This is plain fun, it's fairly secular, but it's fun, it's light hearted, and Snoopy and Woodstock's subplot actually demonstrate some key fundamentals of Christian life. Reaching out to the homeless and housing them, kindness, bringing joy to the young, the less fortunate, and the principles of being a good neighbor. Fixing things when you mess up (Snoopy replacing the birdhouse he broke) it's just... delightful.
3. The Last Temptation of Christ: We follow Christ from his time as a carpenter through his days of his first Sermons through his last, to on the cross, as Lucifer tempts him with what could be. It's tragic it's heartbreaking and it's hard to put into words.

These are absolutely the worst variety of clients. We had one last week bring 7 SEVEN pets in for her 1 pet's single cat appointment for international health certificates because her "Pet Travel Agent" said to bring them all over because "We could just sign off on it" and "they said it was okay" and NO ONE IN THE CLINIC WAS CONTACTED BY THE TRAVEL AGENT only for the travel agent to treat my receptionist like garbage for being "difficult" Ma'am, you had a woman bring SEVEN ANIMALS into a practice for paperwork that requires 90 MINUTES PER PET during her 40 minute cat rehabilitation appointment!!!!
If you have ever, for some unfathomable reason, wanted to irritate every single person on staff at a vet hospital, this is the way to do it:
Tumblr media
They were not only late to their appointment, but are the last appointment of the day. We book wellness visits for the last 2 appointments so that we can start our cleaning duties as this clinic wants us to be able to leave on time so we can get home to our families.
So now, not only are they late, their appointment is going to take twice as long. We close at 5, it is now 4:56 and they only just left the room. Which means reception, techs, doctor, and kennel might be staying late because of something this owner has known about for 2 entire days.

Owner: Brings 4 cats in, none of them the one she scheduled
Me, trying to do Rehab Intake on Cat Scheduled: "Ma'am where is [name of cat scheduled]"
Owner: "These are the cats scheduled. They are here for microchips rabies and paperwork to fly to [EU country]"
Me, absolutely flabbergasted: "Ma'am we have [Name of Cat Scheduled] for a rehabilitation session, international travel paperwork is a minimum 4 hour appointment for each patient."

On Rage and Behavioral Euthanasia:
While I am most definitively against the force free movement's death before discomfort mantra, there are cases that necessitate behavioral euthanasia (BE) the most prominent of these being Canine Rage Syndrome (Rage).
Unlike most behavioral conditions seen in general practice, Canine Rage Syndrome is a genetic neurological disease, rather than a psychological disease, characterized by extreme, often deadly or disfiguring attacks against animals, objects, and people with no known trigger. The dog may go through a preictal phase, and during the outbursts the eyes typically take on a glazed look with dilated pupils, causing the eyes to occassionally appear red in color due to lighting. Dogs may lose control of their bladder bowel and salivary actions during the attack. The outbursts can last anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, with most lasting 3-5 minutes.
It is most commonly seen in spaniel types, particularly the American Cocker Spaniel, and English Springer Spaniel, and Belgian Malinois but is also seen in Golden Retrievers, Lhasa Apsos, Bull Terriers, Poodles, and Laborador retrievers. Rage Syndrome has been reported in Puppies as young as 6 months, however it most commonly presents for the first time between 1 and 3 years old.
While it's status as a neurologic disorder is not disputed, it's classification as an epileptic or seizure disorder is still under debate in Veterinary circles, particularly in cases that do not respond to antiepileptics. Some dogs with Rage Syndrome may respond to antiepileptics, and management is similar to that of other dangerous dogs, 24/7 muzzling & secure containment, antiepileptics, tranquilizers/sedatives, and SSRIs. However, in cases where patients do not respond to pharmaceutical and management interventions, or when the dog has had an episode resulting in a level 3 or higher bite against either an owner or another animal, behavioral euthanasia is often the only option left. A thorough behavioral, neurological, and physical work up should be done on any suspected Rage case to rule out any other potential factors, and Rage Syndrome is most definitively diagnosed via functional MRI and/or Electroencephalogram (EEG).
Today, I assisted with the B.E. of a 3 year old recently neutered male laborador with a history of "outbursts" before he came to rescue. Once in foster care through the rescue, he attacked a 10 year old child without vocalization or prior warning with a glazed look on his face. The child was not interacting with the dog, he was laying on the floor watching TV, away from the dog's toys and crate. In the clinic he was lovely, sweet and friendly, with no signs of aggression, the volunteers who brought him in got him a Big Mac on his way in.
Such is the paradox of the rage dog. They are often highly sociable, loving, normal dogs until they enter an epileptic fit. Some owners refer to their dog's rage syndrome as a Jekyll and Hyde syndrome because of this. In Belgian Malinois, there is a genetic test for the Poly A22 and DAT-VNTR genes which have been linked to Rage in a recessive pattern but the disease is multifactoral so genetic testing is not 100% proof against it. Research into other at risk dog breeds and their genetic markers is still ongoing.
