THIS,I too feel invisible sometimes because the Russians are only ever mafia,spies,hitmen/thugs or hookers,not to mention they refer to all ethnicities from former USSR as ‘Russians’ as if it’s a blanket word which it isn’t.

Yes, when Russia comes up in western media portrayals, I get the urge to tear my hair out. Because it’s precisely what you’ve counted: mafia, spies, hitmen, hookers, thugs; let’s not forget old cars, weird accents and certain lack of civility. Nobody mentions art, literature, ballet, music, architecture - to name just a few things. 

Same goes for characters from Balkans countries - only we don’t get hookers. Women from Balkans don’t exist. It’s almost exclusively bearded men who know none or very little English and aren’t even savvy bad guys at that. 

I’ll never forget what BBC Sherlock did in their season 3 - they had “Serbian soldiers” chasing after Sherlock, speaking the kind of Serbian I couldn’t identify as Serbian (and I understand and can speak it). Plus Mark Gatiss hismelf tried his hand speaking Serbian in one scene as Mycroft Holmes, claiming he learned it in coupe of hours because it’s similar to Russian. 

Massive fail, Mark. I couldn’t even identify what the heck the language you were speaking should be, and I can recognize all languages and dialects from former Yugoslavia. 

So, I’m wondering if I should boycott all entertainment because all I can hope for is negative, gross and inaccurate representation? And who the fuck cares about this? Where are those social justice warriors who will speak about this issue? Am I, or you, less important than people of color for example?
