i guess you can say iā€™m trying to live up to the name of ddumplingā€™s effervescence in that i am trying to be more vocal about my enthusiasm. i used to be so vivacious with my interests: my love of music and my love of the media i enjoy. i often find myself wondering where that part of me went. itā€™s also so weird that i want people to see my work but the mortifying ordeal of being perceived also shuns or shames me into not releasing these ideas and emotions. itā€™s something iā€™m working on, and a phrase iā€™ve seen a lot on the internet is that i am not making this content for anyone but myself. so i think i want to take a step in that direction, somehow. iā€™m not an artist, nor am i a writer, but goddammit i love music and i want to integrate it into my interests because i want to engage with that media in a way that is meaningful to me. so i think if anything, i will post it for myself and no one else
with my life getting more stressful, starting grad school and whatnot, i want to be able to express the parts of me that will inevitable get put on the back burner for the sake of ā€œbeing an adultā€. but i find that the connotation of an adult is changing, and that i can be both a functioning member of society and indulge in my interests no matter how ā€œlameā€ or ā€œcringeyā€ i make them out to be because objectively, theyā€™re not. they are my interests and that is what makes me... well me. so who knows, maybe i will become more confident with presenting my ideas to whoever wants to take a gander at what i have to offer

what music/song best represents our species?
One of my friends brought up this question in our groupchat bc she needed to answer it for an assignment and i couldnā€™t help but go a little overboard with my contenders and explanations!! so here it is, copied n pasted directly from the groupchat, with some edits to be more comprehensible
The Rainbow Connection - Jim Henson (but Iā€™m referring to the cover sung by Carpenters)Ā
To me, this song appeals to the human idea of aspirations, how everyone deserves to have a dream, and the desire to discover your purpose in life. It calls to the wonder of human potential and the individuality of the person; there are no two people with the same dream and really accentuates the uniqueness of the human experience. I also like to think it encapsulates yearning, which imo is one of the few emotions exclusive to our species
Find Myself - Lucy Rose
imo, this song represents discovering yourself (it's kinda easy to think this given the title) but you do so through finding, meeting, loving new people; it's through connections with others that we discover more about who we are. Since humans are hardwired to be social, we place a lot of emphasis on connections with others, whether we do it consciously or not. This song really highlights the impact of finding yourself (haha title drop) through the ways we engage with others in the world and the friendships/relationships we make with our loved ones.
Being Human - Rebecca Sugar (from Steven Universe Future)
tbh i dont really have much for this song, it's only just the title HAHAHA but it probably carries more meaning if you consider the context of the song (coming from the show)
Strawberry Swing - Coldplay
This song stands out to me because it represents another one of those exclusively human emotions: nostalgia. The idea that we like to think back to our past and reminisce on the memories that have shaped who we are and who we will become seems so unequivocally human. This song also calls to the yearning of returning to a more simpler time, a more carefree and happier time, it speaks to our hyperfixation on the passage of time and our mortality.
I Canā€™t Change It All - Lucy Rose
The things i could say about this song... i'll keep it brief: it emphasizes human pain, which imo can be a nuanced thing which makes it a form of pain that is uniquely human, and the power human comfort. Compared to other species, our troubles are in a completely different ballpark. A callback to "Find Myself", it appeals to our desire for human connection and desire to ease that pain from our loved ones. Even if we can't solve their problems or make their pain go away, solidarity is what strengthens that connection between two individuals and makes the pain hurt less

i just absolutely love the way out of time by the weekndĀ makes me feel like the way i can envision myself driving down a street on a roadtrip with my close friend or significant other late at night, straight vibing to this groovy yet melancholic tune. our conversations lean towards reflecting on our past, our regrets, just putting into perspective how insignificant out lives will be in the grand scheme of things but in this moment, itā€™s just you and me and thatā€™s significant enough to hold onto until our time on this earth runs out
AND this song is sampled from a city pop song midnight pretenders by tomoko aran!! mad groovy if i do say so myself

January 2021
First month of the new year!! Thank fucking GOD that 2020 is finally over, because i have had absolutely enough of that blasted year. it was not an easy month but since i have been knee-deep into danganronpa, i was able to fixate on that just long enough to make it through the month. this monthā€™s picks seem kind eclectic; lots of japanese songs, some darker-themed songs, some old bangers... it seems i was just about everywhere and nowhere at once haha. Hereā€™s to February!!
song this month: 9 + 1 album
Take a Slice - Glass Animals (xxx)
tiktok has a knack of finding really cool bops and beats. after all, itā€™s where i found this song! the part that gets the biggest rep is the outro but i feel the rest of the song deserves some love too! itā€™s got a really funky bassline and the instrumentals are nothing iā€™ve heard before so it definitely caught my attention
Greek Tragedy - The Wombats (xxx)
it actually took me a few listens to really begin enjoying the song. it was out of my typical music taste but i actually quite enjoyed listening to this song! not to mention the music video was quite... something
i actually found this song through the Oliver Nelson Remix (soundcloud/spotify) and can i say this remix is so fucking groovy like jeez, itā€™s hard not to bop along to the music
Kago no Naka - Masuda Toshio (xxx)
mushishi is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, animes that i have had the honor of watching; very supernatural but also very serene. it features a soundtrack that is absolutely mesmerizing and perfectly encapsulates the tranquility that comes with the series, this piece is no exception. iā€™d say i highly recommend watching this series if you havenā€™t already!!
Dancing Queen - ABBA (xxx)
whenever i feel down in the dumps, i always find myself listening to this song at least once. i guess you could say itā€™s a comfort song of mine. given that the beginning of this month was a very hard and depressive time for me (from a family member getting COVID, emergency hospital visit, and a really bad family spat), i definitely listened to this song a whole bunch. itā€™s an oldie but definitely a goodie
glow - keeno ft. Hatsune Miku (xxx)
thereā€™s something about all the songs in keenoā€™s album In the Rain that invoke a sort of comforting melancholy in me and i always catch myself coming back to this song in particular. iā€™m not sure what it is about this song but the way it progresses, the timbre of Mikuā€™s voice against the seemingly harsh instrumental bring about some sort of pain that comforts me somehow (talk about contradictions). itā€™s been especially on my mind this month due to the things going on in life rn
Class of 2013 - Mitski (xxx)
is it really a breakdown episode without a Mitski song thrown into the mix? not to me! i recently came across this song after i found that one spotify playlist that ranked mitski songs based on sadnessĀ and wow... i love how absolutely raw Mitskiā€™s vocals are in this song and after reading into the nuances of the lyrics just... dang... i felt that shit in my bones
č¦‹ć›ć‹ć‘ć®ćƒ©ćƒ–ć‚½ćƒ³ć‚° (Fake Love Song) - Indigo la End (xxx)
this song is really nice to listen to! i especially love the vocalistā€™s gentle, smooth timbre and the instrumentation is sublime! itā€™s got that chill-esque vibe that makes me keep coming back to listen to it!
Inuyasha Soundtrack - Kaoru Wada (xxx)
i have always been obsessed with the Inuyasha soundtrack and since i recently found the OST on Spotify, iā€™ve been freaking hooked. i especially love how Inuyashaā€™s, Kagomeā€™s, and Kikyoā€™s themes are utilized throughout the soundtrack while still maintaining their unique melodic themes
my favorite pieces have to be either Aika or Hiun no Miko Kikyo because thereā€™s just something about a somber flute or a longing erhu that really speak to me ahhhhh itā€™s just so good (i could go on forever just gushing about pieces that use erhu but thatā€™s for another post (; )
Moth to a Flame - Memorial (xxx)
i came across this song from Lucy Rose (my FAVORITE artist) bc she was promoting a new debut group Memorial from her record label, Real Kind Records
iā€™m not too sure what genre this song would fall under (iā€™ve never been one to pay attention to genre when listening to music) but their integration of soft brass into this acoustic-sounding song is just a nice touch; i really recommend giving it a listen!!
((maybe itā€™s folk? some form of indie??))
Four Seasons - Namie Amuro (xxx)
when i tell you i went absolutely feral upon finding this song on spotify after years of searching for any full recording of this song, i absolutely lost it
this song was the ending track to the 3rd inuyasha movie and for some reason it has stuck with me so strongly even after years of not watching the movie itself. maybe itā€™s just a nostalgia factor but i just think this song is so beautiful
thereā€™s this continuous zither melody playing (at least i think itā€™s a zither) throughout the song and i think that just adds to the charm of the song
Tumblr media
i recently got really invested in danganronpa again, (specifically with kiyotaka ishimaru & mondo owada and subsequently, their ship) so thereā€™s been a shift in the songs i listened to this month but i donā€™t think that transferred over to my monthly playlist. i also spent a good chunk of the month working on a post i posted on my dr sideblog which required me to listen to a whole bunch of instrumental pieces so that also swayed me into choosing the pieces i chose for this month

pieces of music iā€™ve listened to that remind me of dr:thh characters
my current media brainrot (dr) + a fervent interest of mine (classical music and soundtracks) = this post
so this is just me having fun and combining the 2 things i like to engage in. these choices are just based off how i interpret the characters or like things about them i recalled on a whim haha. i tried to make sure every character had 2 pieces but given my taste in music, some were easier to find than othersā€¦ this was all in good fun tho so iā€™m pretty satisfied!!
if anyone wants to know why i chose certain pieces, youā€™re free to ask me and iā€™ll be happy to respond (iā€™m just a nerd who likes music and talking about it lol)Ā
and also, spoilers for the game!! (just in case)

now i just KNOW yā€™all be clowning on poor Iida because heā€™d listen to classical music in the car so here are some pieces that go hard as FUCK

Die Fledermaus: Overture - Johann Strauss II
Tumblr media
i am completely joking when i say this: the amount of slander put on his name because of his taste in music? far too much. there isnā€™t anything wrong with classical music, yā€™all are just mean
but in all seriousness, i donā€™t quite understand why classical music garnered the reputation of being boring or uppity. actually... maybe i do understand...Ā
REGARDLESS, there are some really cool hidden gems on the classical music scene and i feel like iida would be able to pick up on the bits that make classical music cool! he kind of gives off the vibe of genuinely listening to and analyzing the aspects of a piece of music that makes it really wonderful to listen to. i honestly canā€™t put my finger on a genre of music that he would listen to other than classical music; i am willing to bet there is probably a good chunk of iida stans/simps who have a better handle on his personality than me and would be able to answer this question of mine haha!
anyway, thatā€™s just my perception of him haha. Whether you like his music taste or not, hope you enjoy some of these pieces that i consider bangers!!

December 2020
Finally, the last month of this hellhole that is 2020! i am beyond excited for this year to be over and to post my first monthly playlist. i found a lot of cool bops this month; i think most of the songs in this monthā€™s playlist are ones i discovered within the month, along with some songs i couldnā€™t get out of my head!Ā
songs this month: 8
Ladyfingers - Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass (xxx)
first off, i absolutely adore the trumpet solo; it sounds so smooth and almost refreshing to listen to. it puts my mind and heart at ease. i also love the addition of the vibraphone carrying the piece along. the lack of prominent bass makes this entire ensemble seem so gentle and soft.
it reminds me of a sunday morning when the sun hits your window just right and youā€™re looking out into a wonderful moment of time where the world is quiet and the scenery is untouched by the hustle bustle of everyday life.
This December - Ricky Montgomery (xxx)
iā€™m not quite sure what it is about this song that makes my heart feel a feeling that i canā€™t put into words but it is definitely a good feeling; perhaps melancholic isnā€™t the exact word but itā€™s somewhere in the ballpark
gives me the feeling of two lovers going out into town without a care for how the world perceives them. at that point in time, they are only encapsulated by the smiles emulating from each others faces and the unadulterated joy that comes with knowing that as long as they are by each othersā€™ side, life wonā€™t be so bad.
In Your Eyes (with Doja Cat) - The Weekend, Doja Cat (xxx)
the weekendā€™s original mix is pretty good by itself but my GOD, Doja Catā€™s vocals take the songā€™s vibe to a whole new plane of emotion. i often forget that Doja Cat can sing and her silky light vocals just elevate the lyrics presented in the song. absolutely stunning imo
Daisy 2.0 ft. Hatsune Miku - Ashnikko, Hatsune Miku (xxx)
personally, i feel this was an unexpected collaboration but i donā€™t think itā€™s that bad (that might be because i am partial to Vocaloid given my long history with it). overall, itā€™s a pretty wicked bop and iā€™d definitely come back to listen to this
Magic Ways - Tatsuro Yamashita (xxx)
i have this hypothesis that i will never find a city pop song that i canā€™t groove to and this song continues to support my thesis. i always seem to have a city pop song in my monthly rotation every couple months and i guess this monthā€™s hyperfocus was on this song. the chorus is infectious and catchy and i always find myself dancing in the bathroom while brushing my teeth when this song happens to be on
Plastic Hearts - Miley Cyrus (xxx)
lately, iā€™ve been really into Miley Cyrusā€™ rock-esque phase which is interesting bc i donā€™t often find myself dabbling in this side of music. iā€™m not sure if this song itself is considered rock but i really do enjoy the chorus and the overall vibe of this song, along with some others from Mileyā€™s album of the same name. i remember listening to the song once and after that, i couldnā€™t get the chorus out of my head (which means i probably enjoyed the song more than i initially thought lmao)
Plastic Love - Mariya Takeuchi (xxx)
The absolute excitement that elicited from my being when i found out that this song was finally on spotify is immeasurable. i absolutely love this song: itā€™s such a fun city pop bop and i think itā€™s really timeless, a real good representative of the city pop genre (when you also consider its popularity). every few months i find myself coming back to play this song on repeat and thatā€™s just how i like it
For All You Give - The Paper Kites ft. Lucy Rose (xxx)
i have been a long-time fan of Lucy Roseā€™s work and i gotta say: this is such a dream to listen to! i love the sparse instrumentation coupled with the vocals, the harmonies are sublime and the vibe is so gentle and intimate. i caught myself wanting to listen to this song during a rainstorm that passed by a couple days ago and i think itā€™s a perfect song to lsiten to when the sky is gloomy but your heart is warm

Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op 27: III. Adagio - Sergei Rachmaninov (xxx)
a 15 minute movement by Romantic composer Sergei Rachmaninov; an emotionally moving piece that, in my opinion, beautifully depicts how it feels to fall in love
words: 659
the first 2 minutes introduces us to the delicate melodic motif of the piece from the strings followed by the melody from the clarinet that will define the overall timbre of the piece itself. i wholeheartedly love this motif because it sounds so romantic and wonderfully represents love, i also feel the instrument choice for introducing us to the motif was very good since the strings especially in A major (the key of the piece) give off an innocent, gentle mood for the piece; overall just really solid setup for the rest of the piece to follow
the measures leading up to the first climax essentially add more body and flavor to the clarinet melody; it really fleshes out the timbre and color of the piece to allow more room to grow; the strings do a really good job of helping drive the piece along to the climax (in my opinion) and while it fades in and out of the time leading up to the climax it provides a nice stable foundation for other instruments to embellish the music, subtly leading us to our first climax
tension is added in the chord progression between the 4:30-6:20min mark that will anticipate release during the first climax and OH MY GOD when that first climax hits at ~6:30min mark and all that tension is released is when my heart busts its first nut, all while playing that motif at the climax too just ugh, i love. it's so grand but also doesn't sound too imposing; it's almost like a moment of clarity after being in the dark for so long
the minutes following kinda follow this call and response of the melodic motif between the first clarinet that played the solo in the beginning and a second clarinet. the motif also kinda deviates from the initial melody but not by a lot. the melody itself makes a comeback. and that french horn solo (i think it's french horn) at ~8:30 mark is simply divine: it's a brass instrument that isn't as striking or brash as your typical brass (think trumpet). while it is still a dominating sound that demands attention from the listener, it's more gentle and soft which adds to the soft nature of the piece. strings are still driving the piece forward and they are beginning to lead the piece into its 2nd climax through its sad, kinda melancholy sounding countermelody
at around the 10min mark, things are starting to pick up volume and it's kinda hinting at a potential 2nd climax, almost as if it's building up courage to commit to a 2nd climax. more tension is being added to anticipate something big
and that 2ND CLIMAX, UGH THAT 2ND CLIMAX at ~11min makes my heart bust its 2nd nut bc we hear that melodic motif (again, representing love) and all the tension leading up to that big moment is released. the percussion, the strings, the brass, they're all accumulated into this grand chord that fills my heart with so much joy and love. this intensity is continued but you'll notice that it's different from the 1st climax bc it has an instrument playing a segment that sounds kinda sad, almost uncertain/unsure
as everything dies down, the flute comes in and leads the music back to a softer sound, almost as if the music has done its job of telling the story it needs to tell and begins to die down in volume. the cellos come into the story and encourages the music to give one last hurrah, a mini climax but this time, it's all in one tone (no uncertainty like after the 2nd climax) as if to say that there's a silver lining and everything does end well; and the last minute has everything die down gently, as if concluding the story it was meant to tell
Tumblr media
when i tell you i am obsessed with this piece, i am absolutely fucking obsessedĀ with this piece. it's exactly how i envision falling in love to be like: starts off small but really comes together into this one big moment of clarity as you realize you have fallen for someone.
this piece has been swimming in my head for literally weeks; i discovered it like in november and it has not left my head since. thereā€™s just something about it that i just keep coming back to and i canā€™t help but still smile whenever i listen to it ugh GOD i just love it so much. i even created a scenario in my head that revolves around this piece (thatā€™s how much i love it) but maybe i will gather the courage to post it someday haha. thanks for reading!!

Morning LightĀ - Mark Ford (xxx)
a 3 minute marimba solo composed by marimbist Mark Ford; a soft and delicate piece that conveys the warmth of the sun shining through the windows of early dawn.
words: 346
Such a gentle piece that features the wonderful range and warm timbre of a 5 octave marimba. itā€™s only a 3 minute piece but it invigorates me with such a warm feeling, comforting me through the worldā€™s turmoils and reminds me that even then, there is still peace and beauty to be found in the passing moments if you stop to take it in, like seeing a flower in full bloom on a walk home from a shitty day
The constant changing of key signatures teeters between a nurturing vibe to almost a melancholic one, almost as if it wants to incorporate the melancholic feeling that accompanies that fleeting moment of peace in your life
But regardless of the sadness that infiltrates the piece, it ends in the original key, kinda to symbolize that even though the peaceful times are fleeting, the tumultuous times are, too, fleeting
A good piece to remind me that there are still simple pleasures in life despite the world around you feeling like nothing good or wonderful can ever come out of it
It gives me like ā€œwaking up to the sun shining warmly on your face next to your S/O early in the morning when the world is still asleep. You take in their still sleeping form, peaceful and carefree, and you think to yourself that instances like these are moments that you wish to engrave into your heart forever. The love you feel for your S/O is passionate and powerful, yes, but also gentle and nurturing. You wish to protect moments like these with them, you wish to protect everything that rewards you with their smile because it reminds you that there is still something to wake up to every day. You go through your obstacles in life and there are days when you want to give in to the pessimism of the world but these quiet, tender, fleeting seconds of tranquility make everything just a little bit betterā€ kinda vibes
Tumblr media
My first rambling post! Excited to talk about this piece because it holds a lot of warmth in my heart but nervous bc idk if my words can accurately convey my feelings towards the piece.Ā
iā€™ve always loved the timbre of the marimba, very warm and mellow, and this piece really highlights the gentle, lullaby-esque nature of this wonderfully large instrument. i first listened to this piece back when i was in high school and it still floods my mind with the softness and comfort that i felt the first time i heard it

a personal headcanon of mine: iida has always struck me as the kind of person who would yearn for a quiet night to simply indulge in the silence and leisure of passing time with a loved one, given that the profession he signed up for probably leaves little room for rest. he would absolutely cherish nights where itā€™s just you and him bathing in the rare peace of the quiet, where just having you by his side for one night is enough to warm his heart for days.

hello, i'm ddumpling!
21
bio major, medical anthropology minor
i mainly play(ed): violin, marimba, xylophone
i sometimes make music arrangements but i ā€œspecializeā€ in mallet percussion or string ensembles
i am also a little bit of a weeb (or a lot haha, see my main)
as a general note, i sometimes use my imagination to paint scenarios or visuals in my head because i guess thatā€™s how i process music haha. how a song or a piece of music is interpreted depends on each person and thatā€™s the beauty of music in my opinion: one song, one piece of music can hold so many nuanced meanings and it really accentuates the dynamic nature of how we listen to and relate to the music around us
Tumblr media
extent of my musical knowledge:
iā€™m totally an amateur, i am by no means a professional or well-trained; itā€™s just been a cool hobby iā€™ve never stopped engaging in!
i took ap music theory back in high school
i did marching band, string orchestra, and indoor drumline back in high school
i have been playing music for about 10 years now (no private lessons tho)
