the poll options are really throwning me off because "partially fluent" would imply to me something more like being able to have at least simple conversations, maybe with some struggle and missing words, but still being able to do that, while the next option is the really the "I have heard of this but not learned/studied it" and the "other" is combined with "see results" so none really feel accurate. I've been forcing myself to vote "somewhat" just because I saw your post about how you think knowing even some words counts, but it just feels so wrong 😭

i've been getting quite a few asks like these and i'm sorry that you feel that none of the options listed quite suit you. all i can really encourage you to do is talk about your experiences regardless. nobody's obligated to choose any option that they don't resonate with! i'm not entirely focused on the statistical aspect of this project anyway. it's not imperative that everyone chooses a little box that they think fits them.

i've had to simplify how i go about this poll stuff a LOT over the course of developing this blog, and i felt that just offering a couple of general options for people to choose from could maybe give them an outlet to elaborate on why they chose what they chose and, if applicable, why they DIDN'T choose anything. nothing much beyond that. like i said, i don't wish to gain anything too scientific out of this. i'm mostly interested in the social aspect of this and how different languages have affected different people.

chinese is not a language. the different chinese languages are not just different dialects of the same language, they’re completely different languages with the same script. i only know cantonese and english and i have an easier time communicating to a spanish speaker using english than i do a mandarin with cantonese. there’s very little overlap. cantonese is actively being erased by mandarin speakers so it’s really not cool to say that they’re all the same language. it’s incredibly orientalist.

you have my sincerest apologies, grouping separate languages together was very ignorant on my part. thank you for telling me about this! i can no longer edit that post because of the poll in it, so i think the best thing to do would be to remove it altogether and make separate posts for different languages. you're welcome to send in suggestions as to which ones specifically i should cover :-)
