A semi-joke art for today, too. This time it’s about the Unicron Trilogy’s 2 boats.
I think they’re siblings, a Sailor Moon and Chibi Moon dynamic, if you will. Shockfleets annoying little sister that hatched from an egg.
If you want my rant on how Chromia is an erasure character, keep reading below. If you just want to see the goofy picture above, I hope you like it :]
TDLR, the full version at the bottom: Chromia was meant to be a character that fancied herself with Master Megatron. For this to have occurred though, the show writers would have to bury their gays, the gays being Shockfleet. All I see in her is the only smidge of canonical gay rep that is given in the shows being taken away and replaced with a cisheteronormative relationship.
Mirage/Shockfleet is from Transformers Energon/Superlink. In Superlink specifically, Shockfleet is “Gay for Galvatron” more so than in the English version.
Thunderblast/Chromia is from Transformers Cybertron/Galaxy Force. She is straight for Megatron/Master Megatron. She is like this in both dubs.
I have an unpopular opinion around Energon/Superlink, and that is that I love it. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and find it to be one of my favorite shows solely for the Decepticons. And I also like Kicker.
It also introduced the “second” explicitly gay transformer, which is my guy up there, in all his feet-y glory. He is one of my absolute favorites, and I hold him in high regards along with his previous form, Tidal Wave/Shockwave.
For the sake of convenience I will be referring to the characters and settings by their Japanese names.
So, at the end of Superlink, Shockfleet, Snowstorm, Irontread, Nightscream, and Galvatron fly into the sun. In Galaxy Force technically it starts out as a retcon series but was advertised as a direct sequel, then later on after the show ended they retconed the retcon. One of the new characters in Galaxy Force introduced is the girl up there getting stabbed, Chromia.
Under certain regards, she has her moments. I can understand why people love her as a character, but for me personally, a majority of what I see in her is her role as an erasure character.
First of all, lets start with their similarities. Chromia has a face very similar to Shockwave. Their color schemes are near identical, but hers is shifted around from Shockfleets. Where Shockfleet has black, Chromia has white. Where Shockfleet has orange, she has purple. And where he has purple she has orange. They have similar body types, but this can be excused by Shockfleet just having a very feminine body-type. Something else very prominent is that they both have nearly the exact same chest, but Chromia's has the inverted color of Shockfleets instead. They also share very similar alternate modes.
Lest we forget that they both literally pirouetted with a glowing pink heart around them. This is only a few of the more noticeable similarities, but there are many others.
I know there are people that don’t necessarily want to watch Superlink, compared to the more praised Galaxy Force, but that leads to situations like this not being noticed by people that were just casually watching it. Unlike Starscream and Master Megatron, Shockfleet was never shown coming back from the sun. personally, my theory is that he is on a vacation somewhere, possibly warm climate.
A list of theories that by official canon would be false but I have thought up at some point:
- Chromia was a transfem Shockfleet, but because in Galaxy Force she was hatched from an egg, this was debunked.
To be honest that was the only theory I could think of, and even though it was still gay erasure, it was also trans so for awhile I was like “ I love the trans rep but I’m not happy about her characterization at all” scenario. Until I remembered she hatched from an egg after Shockwave was around already and therefore couldn’t be him.
As soon as I watched Galaxy Force, with Superlink still fresh on my mind, I noticed rather quickly after her first appearance that she was a dead-ringer for Shockfleet. Then came the aggression.
It was annoying at first to know that Shockfleet didn’t return, but Starscream and Master Megatron did. But then to see Chromia come into the show just did something to me. I became feral. In Cybertron, not Galaxy Force, the Autobots were also heavily sexist towards her, so my anger towards her was only outmatched by my heavy dislike thereafter of the Autobots. Should be known that the only thing said about her in Galaxy Force was that she “is a woman” and that it was disrespectful to send a woman (Chromia) to assassinate Master Megatron in dismissal of Starscream.
I was still feral at the end of the series.
My dislike can also be directed to the disgusting display of Gasket and Landbullet attempting to soullessly fill the gap that was taken away with the removal of Snowstorm and Irontread. It could not even abysmally attempt to replicate even at its so-called “best” the relationship that Shockfleet, Irontread, and Snowstorm had by including Chromia on occasion. I have feelings about them. Angry feelings.
My aggression increased still, I quickly became heterophobic.
Joking aside I felt a sense of nothingness with a majority of these characters. I even began to appreciate the Autobots on occasion more than the Decepticons for once. It was a horrible feeling. I sort of enjoyed Gasket and Landbullet on occasion, but it was nothing like my three stooges.
I loved Thundercracker, though.
I’m sorry if I dissed anybody's favorites during this, but I find myself analyzing these characters extremely. All of the Unicron Trilogy shows have their faults, but Galaxy Force is something I cannot forgive. Sadly, a lot of people that don’t like or just haven't watched Energon/Superlink tend to overlook it. I can understand it, I thought through the first half “Yeah this must be a horrible show” and struggled to even watch it. I was only in it for my three favorites, Tidal Wave, Cyclonus, and Demolishor, and ended up loving it in the latter half.
Overall, Chromia was meant to be a character that fancied herself with Master Megatron. For this to have occurred though, the show writers would have to bury their gays, the gays being Shockfleet. Shockfleet was killed off, whether or not malicious intent was there, and was replaced with Chromia. I can find myself enjoying her only when I can know Shockfleet is alive, which never happened, so all I see in her is the only smidge of canonical gay rep that is given in the shows being taken away and replaced with a cisheteronormative relationship that makes me feel like how I felt when Blackarachnia and Silverbolt was shoved in my face while watching Beast Wars.
So all I can say is... :[
