Spring is on its way this week! The robins, grackles and red-winged blackbirds are moving back in and soon the black-eyed juncos will be heading north. I'm looking forward to the start of daylight savings time this weekend and more daylight in the evening.

We are having a beautiful start to March - it has come in like a lamb this year. Today, it was around 60° and I was able to spend the afternoon cleaning up the yard and flower beds. I noticed that the ground is still somewhat frozen when I attempted to thin the periwinkle, but this weather is quite a relief from what it was a couple of weeks ago. Eleven days until spring!

The snow has melted to reveal the rich, fertile soil of central Illinois. It is some of the best in the world and is the result of several glaciation events followed by 11,000 years of tall grass prairie. This beautiful soil goes 12" deep and is the envy of my gardening father who lives in NE Ohio. We are so fortunate to live and garden here!

The weather today was such an amazing contrast to a week ago. Last Tuesday, our high temperature was 5° and we had somewhere between 6-8" of wind-driven snow on the ground. Today, by contrast, was a sigh of relief. Our high temperature neared 50 and the sun was with us all day. Gives me hope that spring might not be too far off!

The polar vortex has finally lifted back north where it belongs. We have been above freezing for the past 3 days and the 6+ inches of snow we received on Presidents Day is melting.
On the far side of the field this afternoon are several dozen snow geese who have landed for the night. It would seem they are headed back north as well. My phone camera doesn't have the best zoom, so you will have to take my word for it. 😉

It's snowing this afternoon so my picture turned out hazy. We're expecting another inch or two today. The field has definitely entered a deep freeze.

We've been below freezing for the past several days and look to remain that way (and then some) for the next couple of weeks. Hello, Polar Vortex!

Happy February! We made it through January (which felt 6 weeks long) and we were rewarded with sunny, blue skies with temperatures above freezing. So thankful to be living in the Midwest and not on the Eastern seaboard today!

It's been raining since about noon and will continue until tomorrow morning when it will change over to more snow. It was a completely miserable day to work outdoors.

The trees on the far side of the field are coated in ice from some freezing rain the night before.

From a couple of days ago: more snow. It's a blessing and a curse. Our area is flirting with drought so we need the precipitation, but I work outdoors and dry conditions make that easier.

Beautiful blue skies and sunshine today! We even made it above freezing for a few hours.

It's a frosty 11° sunrise today. Brr!

It is a beautiful, sunny day for mid-January. The temperature neared 50 - if only every day could be like this until spring.

It has been such a relief to have the sunshine the past two days!

Spent milkweed pods at the edge of the field. Over the 10+ years that we have lived here I have worked to encourage and cultivate the milkweed. My efforts were rewarded in the past few years with Monarch butterfly caterpillars.

The sun came out to play this afternoon! Most of the snow has melted and I am hoping that will mean warmer temperatures in the near future. Feels good to have the sun!
