Med School and Studying
If you want to become a doctor, you should get used to the idea that you’ll spend a great deal of your time studying. Through the course of our degree we will be asked to learn, understand and commit to memory an enormous amount of material and when, finally, we become doctors, studying doesn’t stop. The medical sciences evolve by the second. Everyday life changing discoveries are made and we need to keep up with that in order to provide our patients the best resources we can find. So, even though it might not be one of the most pleasant things to do, it is something very necessary on our way to become good physicians. Since many of you have been asking for tips on how I study, here are a few tips that worked for me:
1 - Cornell Notes taking system - this is the note taking method I found most helpful to take notes in class and at home when I’m studying. It keeps things organized, it’s quite easy to use and, when revising, it’s quite simple to understand.
2 - One Page Notes - this is a tip given by Doctor Andrea Tooley on her YouTube channel, which I truly recommend checking out. Basically, the point is trying to condense one class, chapter, etc. in one page. Of course sometimes it’s a lot of material but trying to do that, even if it exceeds one page, makes us focus on the essential.
3 - Not too much stuff at once - when studying, I don’t like to have too many things open at once. I like to keep it simple, just some slides, maybe a book and my notes. It’s not helpful to study by two books, three reviews and notes. It’s a lot of stuff and it gets harder to concentrate. What I do is to choose the materials I find most helpful and take my notes based on that. If then, if I find that another book that has some helpful information, I read it after and then I add those notes.
4 - Not let work pile up - Simple to understand, HARD to do.
5 - Ask older students - when you don’t know how to study for some particular subject, just ask someone who already done it.
6 - Airplane Mode - when I want to focus on something, and I need to be on the PC, I put it on air plane mode. Blind yourself to distractions.
7 - Water or Tea - have a bottle of water on the desk. It keeps you hydrated and when you’re frustrated, just have a sip of water or tea instead of going online. Hydrates and calms you down. Just don’t go on drinking litters and litters of water please…..
8 - One thing at the time - when you’re studying one subject, focus on that subject. Don’t be thinking about the other ten thing you need to do. You need to be doing that, so focus on that. Be efficient, learn to prioritize.
9 - Plan it OUT - I’m a fan of the bullet journal principal. A plane white notebook and my to do lists, exams, etc. It’s important to have a good outlook on what you have to do. I just don’t waste too much time on aesthetics. (Still looks cool though xD)
10 - Get cosy - make studying a cosy moment. It helps :D
Good luck with everything people!! We can all do this!!! Every great doctor started out as we did: Dreamers and Hard Workers, who wanted to help making this world a better place. Now go study ;)

OMFG I just typed this whole thing and then accidently deleted it. Lol. Well, here’s to starting over!
Hi! I wanted to do this because I understand how hard it can be to learn anything on your own, and hopefully I can help.
But first, a gif.
Tumblr media
i. starting
     ‣ Assess what type of learner you are. Do you memorize things easily, or does it take you more time? Do you prefer seeing things written out, or visually? Everyone doesn’t learn the same way, and that’s okay (that rhymed)!
» If you want a name to the type of learner you are, here’s a quiz (it also gives tips depending on what type of learner you are) !
     ‣ Try to semi-immerse yourself in the culture.
» What I mean by this is just to expose yourself to the culture. It’s easy to learn Spanish without learning any culture, but without it, you miss important things! Also, it’s cool to learn about another culture. But do this in a fun way!
✍ For example, listen to music & radio, watch TV & movies [or dramas/soap operas/novelas (YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT)], go to restaurants, ask friends
     ‣ Make a study schedule
» I have a hard time with this myself, because I am very ambitious. Remember to be realistic. If you have 3+ of homework each night, maybe you can’t study every day, and that is A-okay!
» how to make one: here, here, and a template
     ‣ Have a unique way to motivate yourself. I saw this in another master post and thought it was so great. It suggested you reward yourself when you study, for example, watching a favorite show afterwords or making yourself a smoothie.
And finally, breathe, you got this!
ii. the Alphabet
     ‣ Learn like a child with alphabet songs! These really help me. I like songs and visual things in general tbh…
» Songs in: Spanish, English, Korean, Japanese, French, ASL, Russian and more!
     ‣ Find fun ways to remember the sounds
» For example, in Korean the ㅎ makes an h sound, and a video I watched told me to remember it as a man with a hat on his head
     ‣ And always write down everything!
iii. the basics
I am constantly trying to rush the process. But, as my great piano coach says, “The process has to be as important as the product.” So before going to the fun stuff, I recommend knowing:
     ‣ colors
     ‣ numbers
» a number song in Korean, 6 other languages
     ‣ essential phrases : how to introduce yourself, how to say how old you are, how to ask for help, ‘thank you’, ‘please’, etc…
     ‣ days of the week
     ‣ how to say what time it is
     ‣ honorary terms
» this really depends on the language. I’m actively learning Spanish and Korean and in those two this is important.
✍ ex. It’d be kinda weird to call my two year old cousin ‘usted’.
iv. the fun stuff
And finalllyyyyyyy…. the fun stuff!!! Since you’re not learning this in a formal classroom setting, you can really do whatever you like.
     ‣ Grammar
» Start small: learn one bit of grammar every other day, or whenever feels best, and put it into practice
» Stick to one good source: I just say this because hopping around sources can be really confusing, and not every source teaches same way
» You don’t have to spend loads of money!! When I first wanted to learn a language, I thought Rosetta Stone would be my only option (lol). But there are so so so so so many options, ones that are free!!
All but BBC Languages are available as apps.
               ✍ Duolingo
✍ Mondly: like Duolingo, but more languages
✍ HelloTalk: Talk to native speakers! I’m doing it right now! I really love this.
               ✍ BBC Languages
     ‣ Vocabulary
» Pick 3 (or more) words to learn a day. My NemoSpanish and NemoKorean apps introduce me to 3 per day.
» Label things in your living space (if you’re allowed to)
» If you don’t know it, don’t ignore it, learn it!
» Find cool ways to remember words
» Write every word you learn down.
     ‣ Making it fun
the best part
» reward yourself; watch + listen to things; be patient, it’s okay to make mistakes; join/make study groups
                 Ok that’s all!!
I hope this was helpful! Please message me if you have something you think I should add. And thanks for reading!! <3

Bookshelf Spectrum, Revisited by chotda
I’ve desperately wanted to try this with my books, but my current setup just won’t allow for it. All the books on the hall shelves are mostly arranged according to size to be able to fit as many as possible… so the taller books and photo albums are on the bottom shelves, etc.
Also I don’t think I could handle a system of organization that wasn’t alphabetical and/or splits a series apart. But when I move out, I’m gonna take a whack at it, if only for decor’s sake!

Note
teachmehowtobeskinny got waaaay too butthurt over that tomie cap. shit like that confuses me, foreal. ._.
But it’s not just a cap, it’s Tomie. Can’t blame the girl… her charm is too powerful that it can mistake fiction for reality.
Tumblr media
^ See, she doesn’t sympathize nor she cares with internet drama so it’s all right :]
