I am here to warn you again to learn polite ways to talk about basic bodily functions in your target language โ€” even the embarrassing ones like peeing and pooping. Learn them and practice them A LOT! These phrases should come naturally to you even in your worst moment.
You absolutely do not want to be like me and try to reassure your very traditional and well-mannered Portuguese mother-in-law that your newborn is only crying because โ€œo bebรฉ precisa de cagarโ€ (the baby needs to take a shit) because you are so sleep deprived that you canโ€™t remember the more polite โ€œo bebรฉ precisa de fazer cocรณโ€ (the baby needs to poo).

Mastering Bengali Pronunciation at Home
Bengali, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and mouthwatering roshogollas, can sound as melodic as a sitar solo. But those unfamiliar with its alphabet and sounds might feel like they're tackling a bowl of phuchka โ€“ delicious, but potentially explosive! Fear not, intrepid language learner! Mastering Bengali pronunciation at home is entirely achievable with the right techniques. Here's your cheat sheet to navigate the twists and turns of Bengali phonetics:
1. Befriend the Bangla Alphabet
The Bengali alphabet, known as Bangla Lipi, might look like an exotic vine at first glance. However, with some dedication, you'll be able to decipher its unique characters. Start by familiarizing yourself with the basic vowels and consonants, paying close attention to the diacritics that alter pronunciation. Numerous online resources and apps offer interactive tutorials to make this process less daunting.
2. Shadow Like a Sparrow
Bengalis have a beautiful lilt to their speech. To capture this essence, practice shadowing โ€“ mimicking native speakers. Find audio resources like Bengali news broadcasts, podcasts, or movie dialogues. Listen intently, then try to replicate the sounds as closely as you can. Record yourself and compare it to the original, adjusting your pronunciation where necessary.
3. YouTube: Your Virtual Language Lab
YouTube is a treasure trove for pronunciation practice. Explore channels dedicated to teaching Bengali pronunciation. Look for videos that break down specific sounds, offer visual aids like mouth movements, and provide slow, clear pronunciations. Don't be shy to repeat after the instructor, as repetition is key to mastering those tricky Bengali sounds.
4. Befriend a Bengali Buddy: Conversation is King
The best way to solidify your pronunciation is through real-life conversation. Look for online language exchange platforms where you can connect with native Bengali speakers. Practice basic greetings, introduce yourself, or discuss your favorite Bengali dish. Not only will you improve your pronunciation, but you'll also gain valuable cultural insights.
5. Sing Along Like a Nightingale
Bengali music is a vibrant tapestry of sounds. Immerse yourself in the world of Rabindra Sangeet or contemporary Bengali pop music. Listen closely to the lyrics, paying attention to how the singers pronounce vowels and consonants. Try singing along, even if it's just humming the tunes. This not only makes learning fun but also helps train your ear for the natural flow of the language.
6. Record Yourself Ruthlessly
Record yourself speaking Bengali regularly. Listen back objectively and identify areas for improvement. Are your vowels rounded enough? Are you pronouncing those tricky consonant clusters correctly? Being your own critic can be a powerful tool for identifying and fine-tuning your pronunciation skills.
7. Celebrate
Learning a new language is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be days when Bengali pronunciation feels like a bowl of jalebis โ€“ sweet but sticky. However, celebrate your Fortschritte (German for progress, because every language learner deserves a fancy word)! Every correctly pronounced word, every successfully navigated sentence is a victory. Reward yourself for your dedication, and keep your motivation high.
Remember, mastering Bengali pronunciation is a journey, not a destination. Embrace the challenges, celebrate your victories, and most importantly, have fun along the way! Before you know it, you'll be conversing with Bengali speakers like a seasoned pro, ready to order your next plate of phuchka with confidence

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

How to learn a New Language: A Guide for Every Learner
Have you ever dreamt of strolling down Chandni Chowk and conversing effortlessly with the locals in Hindi? Or perhaps finding yourself in a South Indian temple, seamlessly communicating with the priest in his native tongue? Learning a new language can unlock a world of opportunities, enriching your travels, career prospects, and personal connections. But where do you begin? This blog post will be your roadmap to language learning, guiding you through effective strategies and resources tailored to various learning styles, all while keeping an eye towards languages spoken closer to home!
1. Spark Your Passion: Finding Your "Why"
The journey to fluency starts with a strong foundation โ€“ motivation. Identifying your "why" will fuel your perseverance through inevitable challenges. Is it to connect with loved ones who speak another language? To pursue academic or professional opportunities? Maybe it's simply a love for a particular culture and a desire to unlock its nuances through language. A clear purpose will keep you engaged when the going gets tough.
2. Embrace Your Learning Style: Unveiling the "How"
We all learn differently. Some thrive in structured environments, while others blossom with a more immersive approach. Knowing your learning style is key to choosing the most effective methods. Are you an auditory learner who grasps concepts best by listening? Perhaps you're a visual learner who benefits from flashcards and written materials. Maybe a kinesthetic learner flourishes through interactive activities and games. This understanding will empower you to tailor your language learning experience.
3. Building the Basics: Mastering the Fundamentals
Every magnificent building requires a solid foundation. Similarly, language learning begins with a strong grasp of the fundamentals. Start by mastering the alphabet, pronunciation, and basic grammar. There are numerous resources available, from traditional textbooks and online courses from Hindustani tongue
4. Dive Deeper: Expanding Your Horizons
Once you've established a foundation, it's time to delve deeper! Here's where your learning style comes into play. Auditory learners can benefit from podcasts, audiobooks, and watching movies and TV shows in your target language. Visual learners might enjoy illustrated vocabulary builders and online comics. Kinesthetic learners can explore language exchange programs, online language partner platforms, or even attend local meetups with native speakers.
5. Make it Fun and Engaging: Keeping the Spark Alive
Language learning shouldn't feel like a chore. Incorporate activities you enjoy to keep yourself motivated. Listen to music in your target language, follow social media accounts or blogs written by native speakers, or try cooking recipes that involve learning new vocabulary related to ingredients and instructions.
6. Consistency is Key: The Power of Daily Practice
Remember, fluency isn't built overnight. Consistency is paramount. Dedicate a short amount of time each day, even if it's just 15 minutes, to actively engage with your target language. This regular practice will solidify your knowledge and propel you towards fluency.
7. Celebrate Your Achievements: Rewarding Your Progress
Learning a new language is a remarkable accomplishment. Acknowledge your milestones, big and small. Treat yourself to a reward after completing a challenging lesson or reaching a personal language goal. Celebrating your progress will keep you motivated and focused on your ultimate objective โ€“ achieving fluency.
Embrace the journey of language learning! With dedication, exploration, and the right approach, you'll be conversing with newfound confidence in no time. Remember, the most important step is to begin. So, what are you waiting for? Start your language learning adventure today!
