This year, I'll be posting quarterly rec lists in an attempt to 1) share my love for the fics I read and enjoy and 2) do so at a pace that doesn't turn writing rec lists into an additional deadline. Every quarter, I’ll sort my recs in the following categories: favorite fic, favorite author, other favorites, and 'super popular fics’ I just got around to reading (the popularity criteria arbitrarily set at 10k+ kudos). Most of the fics I read this quarter were shorter ones (below 50k) due to my inability to commit to anything longer, but I have a few long fics queued up for April!

Three’s A Crowd (But Four Is A Party) by @kbrick (Drarry, Dransy, and more, E, 7k)

When Kbrick dropped a Pansy/Draco fic (that is also Pansy/Blaise, Pansy/Harry, Draco/Harry, Draco/Harry/Pansy/Blaise) two weeks after I posted my own scratch-that-itch Dransy ficlet, I clicked the link faster than one can say ‘foursome.’ I read the whole 7k in one breathless sitting. Told in Pansy’s alternatively loving and sarcastic POV, there’s literally not a sentence in that fic that I didn’t love. Laugh-out-loud funny, brain-meltingly sexy, and heart-wrenchingly sweet, I adored this tale of co-dependent friendship, finding one’s soulmate in unexpected places (i.e. Pansy’s bed), and turning over a new leaf after loving someone for so long.

💚 Favorite author 💚

Do you ever come across an author’s writing and immediately fall in love with their brain? porcelainheart3's confident, witty, sensitive voice completely blew me away from the first paragraphs. Every fic of theirs is a gem: their characterizations are perfect, their banter a delight, and I’m absolutely weak for their attention to detail and running motifs (the rainbow pocket square… iykyk <3). Their creative use of magical details reminded me of my favorite Tepre fics. I could read their shopping list and love every minute of it.

Malfoy Knows Best (Drarry, E, 4k): Humor, creative use of magic, bath shenanigans, and pining (SO MUCH PINING), told in spot-on 1st person POV.

I only want the ones I envy (I envy) (Drarry, E, 13.5k): How can a fic be so funny and so devastating at the same time? Featuring fuckbuddies to lovers, denial, pining, acceptance, coming out, and impeccable wizarding fashion. 100/10 recommend.

The Realm of Possibility (Drarry, M, 6k): a wonderful, unique and whimsical take on the multiverse trope!

Hugo Granger-Weasley, Junior Investigator (Drarry, T, 1.5k): I can barely stand the adorableness of this fic, told from four-year-old Hugo’s POV. Lighthearted and laugh-out-loud funny.

Our Objective Remains Unchanged by @citrusses (Drarry, E, 46k): The rowing AU I didn’t know I needed!

The Greatest Game by @sleepstxtic (Drarry, E, 45k): a tennis AU with so much heart.

Mad Blood Stirring by provocative_envy (Drarry, E, 3k): another sports AU (hockey this time), I don’t even like sports and y’all are changing my mind one fic at a time. Extremely funny with excellent rivals-with-benefits smut

Crossed Wires by @skeptiquewrites (Drarry, E, 11k): Harry is a politician and Draco is assigned as his PR. What’s not to love?

Sugarplum by @mallstars (Drarry, E, 27k): the queerest fic I read this quarter, and I mean it in the best way.

Jasmine in Bloom by @lqtraintracks (Drarry, E, 41k): lqt’s werewolf himbo Harry has my entire heart in this fic.

Heart to Hearth by @jtimu (Drarry, E, 7k): a warm, funny fic about Floo repairman Draco and quietly pining Harry

Call if you ever get desperate by @maesterchill (Drarry, E, 1k): Harry cheats on Ginny with sex worker Draco. Dark and delicious, a classic Maesterchilll.

Melt by provocative_envy (Dransy, T, 2.5k): a very unique take on the soul bond trope. If you love Draco and Pansy’s friendship, you’ll adore this little fic.

Burned Silk, Buckled Leather by RuinsPlume (Draco/Sirius, E, 12.5k): this fic blew me away. It’s sad, it’s dark, and yet Draco and Sirius find solace in each other in a way that makes so much sense. Big rec.

🚀 Super popular fics (10K+ kudos) 🚀

Embers by @shiftylinguini (Drarry, E, 41k): how can a fic so smutty can be so… wholesome? Self-loathing Draco learning to accept himself was so touching. I loved every minute of it.

Higher and Higher by birdsofshore (Drarry, E, 28k): I said it before and I’ll say it again: there's something about the Draco Tops Harry fest that produces such delightful, top-quality smut. Then again, I expected nothing less from the brilliant Birds.

The Politician’s Wife by pir8fancier (Dramione, M, 66k): not being a Dramione shipper, I probably wouldn’t have read this one if not for a buddy read with the lovely aibidil. While this fic didn’t turn me into a Dramione shipper, pir8fancier’s writing made this a fast, engaging read, and it sparked a lot of conversations about money, power, and the realities of being a woman in a predominantly male workplace.

The Bolthole by aideomai and Tepre

I bound this fic a month or two ago for the Renegade Guild’s Pacific Northwest server exchange, and it finally reached the recipient. It’s a lovely Drarry fic about a hoarder Harry who lives in a cottage, and Draco comes to stay with him. I printed the cover design with a laser printer on Japanese book cloth, and I was delighted with how it gave it the feel of a much older book.

The endpapers are homemade paste papers, with the book edges painted to match.

Drarry for Beginners: Representation in fic

To close this series (and the year) here’s a last category to celebrate this wonderful fandom (thanks @uphorie​): fics with representation in any capacity! I’m no fandom authority to call them “classics” or seminal works, so I won’t. These are just a few personal faves that stayed with me over the years (and how interesting to see that most of them were published in 2018). In my humble opinion these are great reads for any Drarry newcomer, no matter how familiar they might be with the ship or the HP fandom, because they explore universal themes in a delicate, relatable and thought-provoking way. By promoting diversity & inclusion in terms of plot and cast, they invite us to think, discuss and engage with these themes more often. I’m proud of being part of a fandom that works to embrace representation! I hope you enjoy these gems as much as I did - and a heartfelt thank you to these authors for dedicating their free time to research in order to craft such inspiring stories!

Malfoy is way too interested in coroner reports for somebody who’s definitely not looking for ways to die, Harry wants to be friends with him, and Ginny wants to break up with Harry. Features: Little League Quidditch, an abundance of bath bombs, happy endings, and gay robots in space.

Draco has spent half of his life spouting the things his father has taught him without much thought about how he feels about what he says. When he unexpectedly comes face to face with the Dark Lord, he grapples with the harsh realities of the world and struggles with his changing views on life.

Theme: older Drarry (mid-forties)

When Draco’s cover is blown during a deep undercover operation and the Ministry is compromised, Ron takes Draco to the only safe place he can think of—Potter. Auror Harry Potter jumps at the chance to join the pilot programme, but he starts to regret his rashness when he discovers who he’s to be partnered with: Draco Malfoy.

thoughts on sirius/narcissa

thank you very much for the ask, anon! this has the potential to be an interesting and controversial one...

i've spoken here and there about how - as much as i loathe the character commonly known as fanon!sirius - i'm also not the biggest fan of a version of sirius which has emerged as a reaction to this, who we might call dark!aristocrat!sirius.

this sirius - who appears not to have realised his canon self is being sarcastic when he says his parents considered themselves "practically royal" - is, i'm sorry to say to the aristocracy fans, just as distorted a version of the character as the heavily-tattooed and tiny fanon!sirius. and that's fine, obviously - people are entitled to like and read and write what they want - but it's not going to stop a tear beading in my eye whenever i see it...

[one day i'll hit publish on my the black family are not politically important manifesto and be removed from the fandom...]

which is to say, the sirius who tends to be shipped with one or other of his cousins - although, for exactly the tedious pro-aristocracy, people-belong-with-their-own-kind reasons outlined above, the cousin in question never seems to be andromeda - is this dark aristocrat version, and he's usually written as wanting to fuck either narcissa or bellatrix because the only woman worthy to be with a male scion of the house of black is a female scion of the same house.

and i think it's out-of-character and i think it's dull!

now, if you're looking for the whole twisted-obsession-ruins-the-vibe thing, i can see that there's a plausible case for sirius/bellatrix - they're set up by the canon narrative as extraordinarily similar [and i absolutely read sirius' claim in order of the phoenix that andromeda was his favourite cousin as a lie, covering up the fact that, as a child at least, that role was taken by bellatrix]. i think there's something very interesting which can be done with both of them shattering the expectations of their families in ways which would evidently be quite shocking in a society with such restrictive mores. bellatrix massively defies gendered conventions which require a pureblood woman of her social class to be little more than a wife and mother [although that she does so without being able to leave her family, like sirius, is because - you guessed it! - of those gendered conventions themselves], while sirius shirks his expected social role as the eldest son, upsetting the "natural" order of things in his family's eyes. that can, i think give some interesting flavour to that pairing.

but sirius and narcissa never - in my view - hits in the same way. while they're closer in age than sirius and bellatrix, their personality types are sufficiently divergent [but not in an interestingly conflicting way - their major difference is largely that narcissa doesn't seem to be particularly fun] that the spark is lacking. and this, i think, is the reason why siricissa tends to hang really heavily on the idea that it is hot, glamorous, and aristocratic to have sex with your first cousin.

and look, one of the only bits of "pureblood culture" fanon i accept is the idea that blood-supremacist families practise arranged marriage [i think sirius' comment in order of the phoenix about parents "only letting" their children marry other purebloods essentially confirms it], and that first-cousin marriage may well be their cultural practise as well. but arranged marriages [and, indeed, cousin marriages - which are obviously considered much less unusual in some cultures than others] aren't inherently interesting things. they're just things some people do.

but the vast, vast majority of the sirius/bellatrix or sirius/narcissa i've ever seen thinks that the blood-relation element and that alone is enough to justify the ship as hot and exciting and wicked. and it's not.

what i would like to make the case for instead is shipping narcissa with regulus.

my reading of narcissa has always been that she's somebody who - a little like petunia dursley - feels an absolutely enormous pressure to adhere to social convention, owing to the shame she perceives her family as receiving following both andromeda's desertion of them and bellatrix's refusal to conform. she's someone, i think, who really leans into the character of the perfect lady-of-the-manor, the model wife and mother, the pure ideal of wizarding womanhood - and i think you can do a lot with her experience in this gilded prison of her own, and society's, making.

regulus too is someone who canonically conforms - again, as sirius tells us, as a reaction to sirius' own defiance of the behaviour expected of him by his class and blood status. i think the two of them finding themselves in a relationship which is constantly battling against this artifice - whether they end up clinging all the more tightly to the masks they wear in public or they're able to help each other gradually become more open and real - would absolutely slap.

If you’re like me and enjoy your BL occasionally sprinkled with trauma & heartbreak, I got you some good food. As you can probably tell, these BL stories are not for the faint of heart so make sure to check the tags before jumping in. Apart from Momentum - which compiles both happy and sad shorts - these are really tough reads that tackle heavy themes such as depression, prostitution, sexual and psychological abuse, addiction and the likes. Some of these are just a series of unfortunate and painful events, really. But I promise that all the suffering comes with moving love stories about healing, endurance, redemption and hope; so if you enjoy complex characters, complicated relationships, amazing world building and compelling plots, you can’t go wrong with these. Derek really is Stiles' hyperfixation. He's always like "Derek Derek look at me!!" He has Derek's mugshot in his room. He can identify Derek in any form from 50 yards away. He is completely obsessed.

stiles saw derek in wolf moon and recognized him despite derek not having been in beacon hills for six years which supports him recognizing teen derek later on.

stiles just takes one look at him and this appears over his head

he is fascinated by him. he's obsessed. it's freak4freak. derek's the ultimate puzzle he wants to figure out and never gets tired of. he wants his attention any time they're near each other. he keeps derek's mugshots on his crime board like some weird sentimental keepsake instead of in like idk a locket like a normal person. his crush can be seen from outer space.
