Remember when tumblr announced the sale of your posts to openAi?

In the staff post that avoided talking about it by mentioned the new ‘no-ai’ setting they mentioned that if you had your tumblr blog already hidden from search engines, they automatically had turned that setting on for you by default. I remember thinking “well, in this sea of shit, turning it on by default for those who already cared about privacy is at least a decent gesture”.

But. But!

I had just been sniffing around a bit (of course I didn’t want to copy tumblr’s robots.txt to use it in goblin, what are you saying, that’s outrageous!) and I just realized about something. This is tumblr’s robots.txt (the file that tell crawlers what they can access and what not) when you have the 'discourage external search" on.

Basically, any bot is discouraged from searching any page on your blog. Any bot. Including the AI ones. So if you have the “don’t show up in search engines” box, you already were as protected as tumblr can protect your posts from being read by AI trainers. So yeah, that good gesture was basically smoke and mirrors to distract people from the fact they were already selling their data.

But what happens if you want to allow google & bing & the rest to index your blog, but turn on the 'no-ai’ setting? Then the robot.txt file of your blog changes:

Yeah, that’s a list of known AI services crawlers you gently request to not read your blog. Can you see something missing?

Oh yeah, it seems they have forgotten to disallow GPTBot, the crawler from OpenAi. You know, the company Automattic signed a deal with to sell Tumblr’s data. So well, even if you turn the infamous “no-ai” setting on tumblr, tumblr won’t block openAi bots from reading your site. They will block all its competitors, but not openAi.

Ok nvm it's broken enough on mobile that I can't access the notes section basically. No reblogs. No replies. Definitely can't reply back to them.

At least there's desktop (until I decide to do something about this).

I know I should log this as a bug, but I'm partially surprised I could only find one (1, maybe!) post about this bug on mobile:

I haven't updated my mobile app recently but the dashboard and my account pages on mobile don't load anything. It's the spinning rainbow wheel of doom. I've closed and opened the app. Still spins. And spins.

I can search. I can browse "Your Tags", "Favs" and "For You" (and probably any other tabs I would add to the top on the Home tab). Activity loads.

It's interesting. There was a Tumblr mobile update that said they would no longer remind you there was a new version in the app store unless it was significant. I appreciate it, and now I'm curious if I will ever receive that message again.

I've been reducing my time on Tumblr recently and I'm sure if I update the mobile app there would be a good chance it would get fixed. Maybe later. I haven't been using the mobile app much anyways nowadays. Just too much IRL "Stuff" and a new art archive website that I've been working on.

What is Pride Angels?

It is my series of angel designs in the colors of different Pride flags. I am planning to make the Pride Angels into stickers, pins, keychains, patches, and lanyards. The campaign is planned for June 2024, after Angelology IV. You can follow the pre-launch page to be notified when the campaign launches.

Can you draw X for the Pride Angels series?

Before inquiring, please check that your request is not already complete! I am not taking requests for any new flags at this time, but read on for how you can request a Pride Angel during the pin campaign. After I complete this series this year, I am not planning to make any more Pride Angels.

About the Pride Angels design request pledge tier:

If you would like to request a Pride Angel, I will have a pledge tier available in the pin campaign to pay to request one. Outside these pledge tiers I will not be accepting any requests. Please save your requests for the pin campaign!

If you nab one of the design request pledges, you can request a flag and optionally suggest a theme or inspiration. If I shared a design you liked that I ended up not going with, you could request that too.

Where can I find the 2022 Pride Angels merch?

Most of the past Pride Angels have been discontinued in my main shops, but you can still find them as pins, stickers, keychains, and patches with my stockists.

I liked an old design better. Will the old designs be available during the campaign?

Depending on order quantity I will make the 2022 Pride Angels available as stickers, keychains, pins, and patches. If they don’t meet the order threshold they will not be funded.

Can I draw a Pride Angel too?

Of course, I don’t own angels or Pride flags! If I inspired you I would love to be tagged to see and share your design.

I love Tunic because it slowly changes genres as the game progresses, you start off playing a cute little zelda-like, and as the story kicks up and combat gets harder it starts to feel more and more like dark souls. The game introduces darker plot elements, and demanding dodge timings, while decreasing the time between bossfights, eventually forcing you to decide between what equipment to bring into a new area, until act 2 starts, at which point any enemy can kill you in 2 hits and you're fully playing a souls game. And you think that's everything! AND THEN ACT 3 STARTS AND YOU'RE PLAYING FEZ. IT DOESN'T TELL YOU THAT YOU'RE PLAYING FEZ, YOU JUST SUDDENLY ARE. I HAD TO OPEN UP MY NOTES APP TO SOLVE A ROTATING PERSPECTIVE PUZZLE AND I GOT A VIVID FLASHBACK TO THE YEAR 2017, YOU CAN'T JUST DO THIS TO ME TUNIC.

LOOK AT THIS BULLSHIT AND TELL ME IT ISN'T THE PERFECT SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO FEZ. FUCK. THIS MIGHT BE THE BEST GAME I'VE PLAYED SINCE I FINISHED OUTER WILDS.

I tried it several times before actually! All examples here didn’t include line-art but rather toned directly on the color bases! Do you think some of them are a success?
