My hand slipped and I contacted the ACLU, the FSC, and the MA Bar Association for legal assistance. If you’ve been fucked over by draconian nsfw bans please join my Mastercard Injury Mailing List.

Several years ago, I pulled together a master post of why AS is a shitty organization. Much of that still holds true.

My stance on Autism Speaks
So yesterday, my mother sent me a photo of a page on the Autism Speaks website. It said that they have removed “finding a cure for autism” from their vocabulary. On the same page they stated that they did not support eugenics.
I went on their page to do more research on what they’re saying now. They have a page addressing their awful (and quite traumatizing) “I Am Autism” video. They apologized for it and apologized to anyone that “was offended”.
So what am I saying here?
I do not support Autism Speaks. I never will. Despite their apologies, they do not acknowledge all their wrongdoings. Even if they did, nothing will be able to make up for it. So, that being said, my stance remains the same:
If you support Autism Speaks, GET OFF MY FUCKING BLOG.

Someone in an autism facebook group I'm in just asked "How am I supposed to earn enough to make a living without burning out?"
Someone replied: "You're not. Even neurotypicals can't right now in the system designed for them. We're the canaries in the coalmine. When we start failing, they know something is wrong."

Note: this survey opportunity is about sexual assault experiences.
The STAR-M Study is a research project to better understand sexual assault experiences among sexual minority men in the U.S., including cis and trans men and transmasculine people, to inform affirming prevention and response efforts.
Almost half of sexual minority men experience adult sexual assault victimization in their lifetime, and as many as 30% of sexual minority men report lifetime adult sexual assault perpetration. Although rates of victimization and perpetration among sexual minority men are alarmingly high, even when measured over short periods of time, little research has examined risk and protective factors for adult sexual assault victimization or perpetration.
This five-year project, which will be named by an advisory board, focuses on identifying those factors and is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.
The research will focus on young adult sexual minority (e.g., gay, bisexual, queer) men, including trans men and individuals identifying as transmasculine, ages 18 to 30, from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Researchers will recruit 3,600 sexual minority men from a geographically and racially diverse sample via online platforms and community-based agencies across the U.S.
You can learn more by reading the informed consent form (PDF) or by visiting the study’s LinkTree.

There are so many incorrect viewpoints, misconceptions, and assumptions about what autism is. That makes it even more refreshing when folks like Hank Green cover autism in such a comprehensive way. I had no idea that one possible cause of autism can be excess antibodies folks are exposed to in utero when their birthing parents have an autoimmune disease. Despite being someone involved in research on autoimmune diseases, this was news to me. I also appreciated that he highlights some issues with Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA*)... It's important to know that #ActuallyAutistic folks are generally against this practice because it is literally harmful. ABA has been used historically in ways to torture folks into being quiet, including punishments up to receiving electroshock therapy and physical abuse when they fail to follow instructions. The main point of ABA is often to learn how to mask your symptoms so that you're not upsetting the people around you. This shouldn't be surprising, since ABA is directly related to anti-LGBTQ+ conversion therapy. Both were heavily molded and pioneered by Ivar Lovaas, who seemed to have a real problem with people existing as they are. As someone who is currently learning how to unmask my neurodivergence, I can tell you first-hand that forcing folks to conform creates immense psychological harm, ridiculous levels of stress, trust issues — and contributes to an immense amount of chronic pain. * I am not interested in having a dialogue about ABA, including any possible "benefits" parents and families see. Again, there is a direct connection to conversion therapy and I'm not interacting with positive content on either of these practices. Instead, feel free to use any time you may have spent on related comments to 1) watch this video and 2) read this post to learn why you shouldn't support Autism Speaks.

You know how Mormons do that thing where they're studying genealogy so they can retroactively baptize everyone into being Mormon?
I'm gonna start a new religion where we do that but for being trans. We're gonna retroactively transition everyone who didn't get a chance to in their time on Earth, so finally they can be their true gender in heaven.
Like, "I'm sorry to hear about your grandma's passing. I'm sure he's in a better place now."

Today's aesthetic: cosmic horror tabletop RPGs from the 1980s whose creators wrote the "madness rules" by simply plagiarising a list of disorders and their descriptions from the DSM-II and turning it into a d100 lookup table, except the DSM-II still listed "homosexuality" as a mental disorder (it wasn't removed until the DSM-III), with the result that there are several published tabletop RPGs where there's a small but non-zero chance that seeing Cthulhu will make you gay.
