Warning rant about Percy Jackson. Sexual Assault mention.

The Percy Jackson TV decided to make Medusa a victim of rape who got punished by Athena while Poseidon got away with his crimes. 

This is really messed up for a lot of reasons, and the reasons why it’s so messed up is how it’s addressed and portrayed. 

First off in the show they never outright say Medusa was assaulted. Which is a problem in itself. It tries to cover up what happened, which is disrespectful to Medusa (the victim) and before anyone tries to tell me saying that saying that Medusa was assaulted is not appropriate for a kids show just know that in the books it (which I checked to see if it was canon or not) says that Poseidon chased after Demeter forcibly cuddling with her. Which is also something no one in the fandom seems to know about either.

So yeah Rick was okay with putting that in a kid’s book. And before anyone says maybe Disney wasn’t comfortable just know that Disney made the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Which showed Frollo trying to force himself onto Esmeralda. So both Rick and Disney are willing to mention this stuff. 

A lot of people who saw the show believed that Medusa broke her vow of chastity willing with Poseidon. She talks about how Poseidon saw her not HURT or ABSUED her. That she felt seen and loved. It sounds very much like a consensual relationship. One where it seems the only sins Poseidon committed were one that he didn’t stand up for when Athena wanted to punish her. And two where he abandoned her, in her time of need. 

And then Medusa talks about how Percy can ‘teach his father to stand up for the people he loves’ which seems to be mirroring back to how Poseidon didn’t stand up for Medusa, how he abandoned Medusa. It very much comes off as two people who willing engaged in sex, one who got punished, and the other refused to stand up for their lover while also abandoning them. Not a story about rape. 

And then the show tries to redeem Poseidon by making him this good guy. Showing that he cares for Sally and Percy, that he would sacrifice his pride to save Percy. It seems like it’s mirroring back to a relationship where Poseidon didn’t surrender his pride to protect Medusa. We could’ve had some powerful parallels between Poseidon not standing up for Medusa, yet standing up for Percy. It could’ve asked questions about whether Poseidon could change or not. It could address abuse just in a different kind of way. 

But no Poseidon is a rapist in this. He didn’t abandon Medusa, he raped her. The story is trying to redeem a literal rapist. And no one sees a problem with this? No one sees how this will negatively impact people to think rapists can change? And then like I mentioned earlier the Hunchback of Notre Dame addresses sexual assaulters in the movie, but it doesn’t try to redeem Frollo. It doesn’t try to make Frollo a good person all of a sudden. It makes it clear he’s a villain and that his actions are vile. It doesn’t try to make rapists good people. And for people who say Poseidon didn’t rape Medusa, just know that Medusa’s actress said she was portraying Medusa as a victim of rape.

So uhm... guess who tripped and fell HARD for Coral Island's merman Semeru. Definitely not meeee~ Anyway, here's a quick sketch because I can't get him out of my head and I really need to share my obsession with sOMEONE.

(also, i know that he's currently rather grumpy, distrustful and not that outgoing, so the expression that i gave him might be a litttttle OOC for him (for now). HOWEVER. BUT. Just imagine him doing his job guarding the kingdom and stuff and keeping an eye on MC-farmer because y'know he still doesn't really trust us and all that quak, but then farmer does something dumb that he finds mildy amusing, which is why he'd have this sliiiight very tiny smile on his face. That's the kinda expression I wanted to give him. Also shoutout to @fyreiswriting because their work on Ao3 is what kept me alive these past few weeks, months? Hi fyre. Love your stories.)

I love this interaction between them so much, the way Barok apologises to Albert, the "you were like a great demon" thing he says pffff, Barok then responding with "you're one of the few true friends I have" and then offering Ryu some acknowledgement!! and then Albert insists that he knew Barok always had his best interests at heart... and then immediately Barok insisting upon shipping his "friend-shaped package" as Ryu says back to Germany

also extra bit where Barok says he doesn't wanna take any chances with a close personal friend... (and it actually took me by surprise that Albert stammered his name there I forgot about that)
