So we're just gonna forget that there's a massive half-mechanical heart lying around in Belos's castle?
Tumblr media
Theory time: At first glance, this seems like a throwaway storyline caused by a shortened S3. It probably is. But this doesn't seem like a plot point that can be completely tossed aside and ignored.
Belos's castle was intentionally built in a pit underground. It's very much a function-over-form building. And it's not just in any pit: it's a cavity where the titan's heart should've been.
Tumblr media
However, as of King's Tide, Belos didn't seem to have any intentions past witch genocide and returning to Earth. What's more likely is that the Collector had escape plans of his own, and he'd been getting Belos to unknowingly make preparations for him (think Bill and Ford, Gravity Falls).
If the Collector hadn't cancelled the draining spell without a second thought, I would've thought he had further motives beyond escaping his prison. But nope, he's a just a child psychopath who's been in time-out for too long. Even then though, he's an unfathomably knowledgeable child.
It seems that beyond glyph combos, most of the advanced magic Belos knows has been taught to him by the Collector. Why teach Belos a draining spell specifically to massacre the witches? Instead of thinking of it as draining spell, think of it as a collecting spell. It collects the magic drained from witches into the moon.
Tumblr media
However, we might not be getting the full picture by simply assuming the moon is absorbing the magic. Throughout the show, the moon has been a symbolic representation of the titan, from the face on the moon to the depictions in King's nursery. I doubt all that magic was going to the moon just to dissipate: it was going to the titan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It seems quite ironic that the "spawn of the titan" (the population of the Boiling Isles) is now morbidly returning to its creator. If that rings a bell, you've probably watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, an anime instrumental to many people's childhoods. It's influence on The Owl House is rather significant, ranging from several visual references to Hunter and Rei being clone buddies. The Day of Unity is also a parallel to NGE's Third Impact, an apocalyptic event where a giant woman expands by reabsorbing humanity, becoming God.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piecing together the titan/moon connection, the artificial heart, and the NGE references, it seems that the Collector's contingency plan for escaping was reanimating the titan. Someway, somehow, it would've freed the collector. Perhaps the titan sacrificed itself to seal off the Collector. Or reanimating the titan would have provided enough blood to free him. Regardless of how this could've gone, it seems unlikely that we'll be visiting this storyline again because of the shortened third season.
Lastly, I do have a bit of speculation as to why this storyline won't be included in the show moving forward. But first, I'd like to give a...
WARNING BEFORE CONTINUING: OLD S2A LEAK
Context: The show's composer, Brad Breeck, uploads OSTs of episodes on his Youtube channel, typically featuring loops of scenes from the episode. However, for the Hunting Palismen OST, the loop he chose accidentally included a deleted scene.
Tumblr media
What's so interesting is that this is a fully-animated scene. For those who don't know, here's a barebones list of the cartoon production pipeline (in order): brainstorming, writing, storyboarding, voicing, animating, and editing. Scoring (music) generally occurs around animating. This is a long process— the time between writing and animating can often take over a year. Batches of episodes are concurrently produced. You don't just animate something and decide not to use it. The crew had planned for this storyline.
My point? Something BIG changed last minute for the crew to decide on cutting out a fully-animated scene.
If I had to guess when this scene was scrapped, it was a bit after Season 3 was shortened and the crew was rewriting the main story. I doubt this was a fake leak that was intentionally spread, simply due to the cost of animation. There's many cheaper ways to psych out your fanbase.

What better way is there for Dana and the rest of the Owl House crew to vent about their passions and careers through their show? They've written more episodes spotlighting Illusion magic than any other type of coven magic (most notably with Through the Looking Glass Ruins and Labyrinth Runners) because of how close it hits home for them. If the crew were witches in the Boiling Isles, their equivalent jobs would be illusionists.
Artists, writers, and illusionists generally don't create physical products that people can use in their everyday lives, so it's much harder to make a living and feel valued in society. In TTLGR, Gus gets a taste of that when he's told illusion magic is weakest of them all. Growing up, anyone pursuing art or writing is hit with a strikingly similar message. How will you make money? Sure, good art is rightfully impressive, but to many, it is indeed just a "hi-def party trick". There's no future in party-tricking for a living. I guarantee you every member of the crew has had that fear at some point.
Even in the slim chance you make it in the industry as an artist or writer, the fear doesn't end there. Abusive studios and incompetent showrunners will mentally tear you down. In Labyrinth Runners, Adrian Graye is a stand-in for every delusional director, giving vague insight while expecting the world. Many shows are made in toxic environments where those running the show pound their workers into the ground because of their limited resources. Many refuse to put up with the pain of not reaching a producer's insatiable expectations and even end up quitting. The coven scout who quit at the end, Severine, is a direct parallel for those people. More power to the crew for putting the show-making industry on blast in a kids show.
EDIT: did I mention DANA HERSELF voiced severine

Belos: "You'll have your fun on the Day of Unity"
The Collector (continuing like its a poem): "Betrayed, beguiled, alone, deceived; we'll have our revenge on... ugh, unity is so hard to rhyme"
No, it's not hard to rhyme, especially for someone who appears to be a poem enthusiast. The collector is clearly omitting the word "humanity" when talking to Belos.
Tumblr media
Also, the Collector used the word "beguiled"? Interesting.

bumping this theory from s2a because it feels more relevant now (just change the part about the eclipse shadow casting over the titan's body to the titan's head)
Why the Day of Unity Occurs During a Solar Eclipse
Tumblr media
Ever since Hunting Palismen, it's been revealed that the Day of Unity will take place during a solar eclipse. We see the astronomical event in the vision with the coven heads, but it also logically checks out: a solar eclipse is the union of sun and moon. But what is the significance of the Day of Unity occurring on such an event? First, we have to understand the important relationship between magic and space.
Astronomical imagery is very prominent in The Owl House. For example, abstractions of stars and planets are spotted all over King's nursery in Echoes of the Past. Not only that, many celestial bodies have unique magical properties. In Hooty’s Moving Hassle, the moon can conjure objects when it rises to the right position once every year. The wailing star from Lost in Language can bring illustrations to life. In Adventures in the Elements, the light glyph can be seen as a constellation. By this point, it's a proven fact that many astronomical events in the Demon Realm have powerful magical properties.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know from Raine in Eda's Requiem that Belos is preparing a "big spell" for the Day of Unity. Astronomical magic possesses magic far more powerful than what any one witch can acquire, so it only makes sense for Belos to utilize an astronomical event.
I see two possible ways for Belos to utilize the solar eclipse to set off the big spell. (I won't get too much into what the big spell will do yet since that would require a far longer post for another day. Trust me when I say it's much deeper than bringing the Titan to Earth.) The first method is simple: once the sun and moon align, a special type of magic is released, beginning the spell. It's very much like the Moonlight Conjuring where the moon must rise into a certain position in the sky for its magic to be harnessed.
The second is a bit more complex. This assumes the calculations for a solar eclipse in the Demon Realm are similar to Earth's. In our world, total solar eclipses (when the entirety of the sun is covered by the moon) are rather frequent: they occur about once every 18 months. If total solar eclipses happen so often, why does the Day of Unity appears to be an event that has been planned out for decades? Why didn't it happen sooner? It seems that there are more requirements that call for a rarer astronomical occurrence. Perhaps there not only has to be a solar eclipse, the eclipse must also cast a circular shadow on top of the Titan.
Before getting into the "why's", can a solar eclipse even cast an adequately-sized shadow on top of the Titan? In an interview with Collider, Dana stated that the Titan was roughly the size of Vermont. The state is approximately 160 mi x 80 mi (260 km x 130 km). The umbra (darker inner shadow) cast by a total solar eclipse can have a diameter ranging from 100 km to 160 km. So yes, roughly speaking, the eclipse could cast a sizable circular shadow on top of the titan.
Tumblr media
Why is it so important that the umbra of the eclipse be on the Titan? The umbra will act as the foundation for a supermassive spell circle. Raine calling it a “big spell” would be the understatement of the century. To fans of Fullmetal Alchemist, this sounds all too familiar. To illustrate what could happen, here's a reverse transmutation circle from that show, traced out by a solar eclipse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From The Intruder, Eda shows that the power of spells depend on the size of the spell circle. Luz demonstrates that this applies for glyphs as well. This eclipse's shadow would fall under the same rules.
Of course, we still have to ask, "what about the rest of the glyph?" It likely isn't one of the four basic glyphs because it would be extremely difficult to carve out the middle of the glyph. (Also just imagine if Belos carved out a fire glyph the size of the Titan). What's more likely is that he's creating a glyph combo, using the shadow to trace out the organizing circle. Then, he could create sites along where the shadow is calculated to be and make them in the shape of the appropriate glyph.
It's not just glyphs that can be added to the glyph combo, though. When Luz creates the sleeping mist in Hunting Palismen, there is a dedicated place to put the sleeping nettles. The glyphs or items don't even have to be on the side. For instance, the invisibility glyph combo has a glyph right in the center.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Belos's castle sitting in the middle of the Titan, it's possible that it could also be in the center of the supermassive glyph combo. Belos's castle, portal, or heart could either be used or enhanced through the activation of the glyph combo.
tl;dr: solar eclipse on the day of unity makes a big shadow over the titan, outlining a supermassive glyph combo

Yesterday i saw this post by @ideekhay comparing Belos and Hunter realationship with ponyo and Fujimoto
And my brain went to "Oh interesting" to "i need to draw it!"
Also here is some ideas:
— Luz and Hunter realationship is platonic
— I love Camila but Eda would perfectly play Lisa (sosuke's mother)
— Hunter is a golden fish
— As in canon Hunter is two years older, that means he is 7 and Luz and Amity are 5
— Granmamare is the titan
— Found family trope at it's maximum power
— Hunter gain his scar while he was raising to the surface, pollution is a bitch.
— Belos clothes are his puritan clothes

What Ponyo Reveals About Belos
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After rewatching Ponyo, I can’t help but see all the ways the Owl House's writers and character designers drew inspiration for Belos from the movie’s "antagonist", Fujimoto. The two are both scientists/engineers at heart: Belos with his blueprints and inventions, Fujimoto with his magical elixirs. Judging by their mutated faces, they also altered their own bodies in some way to renounce their humanity.
Although he once considered himself human long ago, Fujimoto used his research to infuse himself with magic traits, leaving his humanity behind "to serve the Earth". To replenish his magical powers, he consumes elixir by the jug. This parallels Belos, someone who was likely human centuries ago but gave himself magical powers and now considers himself a witch who serves the Titan. In classic Owl House fashion, he adapts Fujimoto's method of replenishment and makes it more morbid by consuming palismen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even when they differ on goals, their approaches are the same. Belos is shown to embrace industrialism; Fujimoto, the opposite, yet they both seem to have their eyes set on a single apocalyptic day to accomplish their goals. Fujimoto waits for the day that the his elixir well fills to the brim so that he can eradicate humanity and rebirth the Era of the Ocean. Meanwhile, Belos wishes to create a utopia free of wild magic on the Day of Unity, a place only the worthy will "inherit". Of course, to inherit means to take from those who die, implying mass death to the unworthy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fujimoto: [tastes elixir] "I can feel the power of the ocean in the furthest reaches of my DNA. When this well is full, then the age of the ocean will begin again. An explosion of life to match the Cambrian age. An end to the era of those abominable humans."
What cements the allusion is how both stories describe a broken parent-child relationship. Hayao Miyazaki wrote Ponyo as an apology to his son for being a terrible father. In movie, Fujimoto forbids his fish-child, Ponyo, from interacting with humans, telling them about how horribly they treat nature. Naturally, he becomes outraged upon seeing Ponyo transform into a human. Belos conditions Hunter, his "nephew" and effectively-adopted son, similarly by chastising him for even considering the use of wild magic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what becomes of these broken relationships? Ponyo finds Sosuke, a child raised by the more innocent, softer side of humanity, and is taken into his family. Luz fits perfectly as Hunter's (platonic) Sosuke, and if the two plots do mirror one another, Hunter would become another member of the Owl House's found family.
By the end of the movie, Ponyo gives up magic forever to permanently become a human. If Ponyo, the half-fish/half-human, changes in that manner, it only opens up a plethora of possibilities for Hunter, the powerless half-witch/half-human. Does he abandon the artificial staff, Belos, and his old life? Or will he give up his found family in exchange for Belos to transform him into a full-fledged witch?
tl;dr: belos is to fujimoto as hunter is to ponyo
extra tidbits/food for thought:
Ponyo is first described as a "goldfish", could this have inspired Hunter's title of the Golden Guard?
Ponyo was released in 2008 and is one of the top grossing anime films, certainly Dana and the crew have watched it.
Hunter's VA tweeted that the character could get a spinoff, hinting towards him getting a redemption arc.
Dana said in here AMA that Belos has "very specific inspirations" that will become clear in season 2, this might be one.
Fullmetal Alchemist is likely another heavy inspiration, see my other posts here (Day of Unity, Coven Heads)

Blueprints and Journals
Most people have already seen dozens of theories about Belos and Philip being brothers, but I haven't seen anyone point out the important parallels in these two scenes yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For someone so opposed to wild magic, Belos doesn't seem like the person to have written an entire journal dedicated to wild magic and its applications. In fact, his characterization much better fits someone who tries utilizing technology to avoid using magic. That then leaves the question of who the journal was written by.
In the first image, we see a blueprint on the left and the journal on the right. In the following image, we see the person on the left holding a journal while the other person holds what appears to be a blueprint. Side by side, the implication here seems rather obvious: Belos, being a man of technology, made the blueprint while Philip wrote the journal. This matches up with most theories about the statues, identifying the left person as Philip and the right person as Belos based on their facial features. The analysis of facial features makes even more sense if you apply the theory that Hunter is a Grimwalker/clone made from Philip's remains.
Tumblr media
(photo credit to Shimo from TOH Discord)
So what's the timeline leading up to this? It seems that Philip came to the Boiling Isles alone and was focused on creating a portal to return home, documenting his research in the first journal (the one eaten by the echo mouse). Upon completing the working portal and donating his journal to the library, he returns home (and presumably gets a haircut lmao). Based on his words from "Through the Looking Glass Ruins", Philip still wants to show his friends and family the Boiling Isles. He decides to take his brother, Belos, back to the Boiling Isles. On this second trip, he begins recording a second journal, this time focused more on wild magic from the isles. However, given the lack of knowledge on Earth about the Boiling Isles, Philip likely didn't make it back from this trip. Belos was then left stranded on the Isles with the journal but no portal. Could Philip have been killed by wild magic during his research? That would explain Belos's deep hate for wild magic.
One final random thought: Hunter calls Belos his uncle because Philip is his “father” (DNA donor) (not an uncle technically but close enough).

Magic Originates from Space, Not the Titan
As an extension on my solar eclipse theory regarding the Day of Unity, I figured it would be worthwhile to elaborate on the relationship between magic and space. This post is pre-Eclipse Lake, so details may change soon.
Tumblr media
In Adventures in the Elements, Luz says that “magic is a gift from the island”. But what if that’s a flawed observation? The Knee is supposedly a potent source of magic where the first witches developed their skills. However, it would seem odd that the Titan’s knee is the most potent source of magic. That would be as strange as saying that the human knee is where the most blood flows through. What is special about the Knee is its elevation. It is the highest location in the Boiling Isles. Magic might not originally be from the Titan; perhaps it originates from space.
Think of free-flowing magic a bit like UV rays: ultraviolet light shines nearly everywhere on Earth’s surface, but it’s even stronger higher in the atmosphere when it’s not blocked by the ozone layer.
Tumblr media
It wouldn’t be crazy at all to think space has magical properties, even without the example of the Knee. Astronomical imagery has been prominently displayed throughout the show. We see abstractions of stars and planets all over King's nursery in Echoes of the Past. Not only that, many celestial bodies have unique magical properties. In Hooty’s Moving Hassle, the moon can conjure objects when it rises to the right position once every year. The wailing star from Lost in Language can bring illustrations to life. Most importantly, in Adventures in the Elements, the light glyph can be seen as a constellation. How can the light glyph be a gift from the Titan if its origins are in the stars? I doubt the Titan has enough strength to affect the orientation of the stars.
Tumblr media
With all that being said, it's not that the Titan doesn't have magical properties. Its blood and its gallstones (the Galderstones lmao) are both good examples. But regardless, it's quite likely that the Titan's origins (and all magic in general) can be traced back to space.
Of course, it would still seem strange for the Titan(s?) to have appeared out of nowhere from some space dust. This is where turning to mythology might be helpful. Human myths are supposedly influenced and caused by leaks from the Demon Realm. This logic extends to religions as well; after all, dead religions eventually become mythology. One place the show may have borrowed from is Egyptian mythology.
Most of the Egyptian deities resided in the sky, and the sky can be further interpreted as the cosmos. This is especially true for deities that controlled astronomical objects such as Horus and Ra. The right and left eyes of Horus represent the Sun and Moon respectively. Even by itself, the Eye of Horus stands as a powerful symbol of protection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Could this symbol be one of the mythological and artistic influences for the eye at the start of the Season 2 intro? And to whom does that mysterious eye belong to? Horus often takes the form of a bird in his depictions. If we assume that the eye in the intro is a parallel to the Eye of Horus, could the eye be part of a bird-like deity? (For fans of the Owl Deity theory, you know exactly where I’m going with this.) That bird thing on the ceiling of the Owl House? That’s not Eda’s symbol: that’s the Demon Realm’s equivalent of God.
Tumblr media
What other entity from space could create beings as powerful as the Titans? What else could be the source of magic from space? There’s way too much analysis that can be done on the Owl Deity for this one post alone, so if @fermented-writers-block doesn’t finish up that Owl Deity grand theory soon, I might have to make my own version in another post (but no rush bro lmao).

The Irony of the Coven Heads (and why it matters)
Eda's Requiem finally gave us a more personal look at some of the coven heads. Raine, Darius, and Eberwolf are all solidly designed characters, each with their own interesting quirks. I really appreciated the bit of ironic humor with Darius freaking out about getting mud on him. Like dude, your hair is literally slime.
Tumblr media
And that's not the only irony regarding a coven head. Raine has stage fright as the head of the bard coven. But two times can't just be a coincidence right? What if each coven head had their own irony? Observing each coven head through this lens, it's actually quite clear how intentional the irony is. For example, Eberwolf doesn't just do beastkeeping: they are a beast. In Covention, the construction coven head seemed rather accepting to Tiny Nose's destruction unlike the other members in his coven.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, I haven't even mentioned the biggest irony of all: Hunter, the new head of the Emperor's Coven. Members of the Emperor's Coven are free to use every type of magic. They're supposed to be the jack of all trades. Hunter, however, is master of none. Forget practicing all types of magic; he doesn't even have any magic.
Tumblr media
Now the question that remains is what ironic qualities do the other coven heads possess? One possibility is that the illusion head's illusions are so real that they're no longer illusions: they're actually tangible. Furthermore, the oracle head could be blind. And the head of the healing coven? That's the face of violence. Do no harm my ass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the lore deep-divers, this next connection might get interesting, especially for those who are familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist. Dana stated in her Reddit AMA that Belos has several influences that will become more apparent in Season 2. One character that potentially influenced Belos's design could be Father from Fullmetal Alchemist. Father had seven "children" who did his bidding, the powerful Homunculi. By the end of the show, each Homunculus died an ironic death. For instance, Gluttony died from being eaten. Belos being a parallel of Father has many implications on where the show could be headed. But that's a post for another day. For now, this post should suffice in explaining how The Owl House might be influenced by Fullmetal Alchemist.
