I ♥️ petrolatum. Unlike the buzziest ingredients on social media right now, it does. absolutely. nothing. And it’s part of what makes it great for sensitive, upset skin. That petrolatum is occlusive makes it a good barrier for skin that leaks moisture too quickly for its own good. That petrolatum is inert — that it has no “active” component — makes it a good barrier for sensitive, cranky and/or cracked skin. Petrolatum won’t make your skin sting, nor will it react to skincare actives. Its whole job is to lie on top of the skin like a dust cover. And when your skin needs a ‘dust cover,’ petrolatum is the gold standard for formulators as well as dermatologists. All that said, petrolatum sometimes gets thrown into a list of “active ingredients” because we often take “active” to mean it actually does what it’s supposed to. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Clarification aside, my skin loves petrolatum for keeping moisture in. And my brain enjoys that petrolatum works because it’s as inert as a couch potato with @netflixca and @primevideoca. What a great job. Also, petrolatum is clean. Like, REALLY clean. The disappointment is real. Trusted brand @eauthermaleavenefrance has launched a new sunscreen filter (not yet available in Canada) named TriAbsorB. However, It seems that in order to promote it, parent company @pierre.fabre.group decided to throw fear-mongering shade at Octocrylene, a long-approved filter that is proven safe and effective in recommended dosages and formulation. This controversy didn’t really reach North America because the TriAbsorB filter is so new it hasn’t yet been approved by Health Canada or the FDA, but it was a stink in France. And it’s disappointing because #Avene is such a solid brand, and parent company @pierre.fabre.group does good, humanitarian work in less fortunate countries (see my IGTV vid “86% of profits”). Daily reminder that we live with a powerful natural carcinogen that just happens to deliver benefits along with potential disaster — like medication. I’ve said there ought to be mandatory school classes on critical thinking and the wonky biases built into our brains, and lo: such a course DOES exist! Offered by @ualberta, a new Science Literacy course isn’t mandatory, but it is FREE! It’s also online and meant to be completed at the student’s own pace. 💪🏻 . Just a reminder, especially for anyone just getting into skincare. Social media tends to suggest that you need to choose products from about 943 different brands. That way lies madness, upset skin, and bankruptcy. . For instance, if you are a newbie already using, say, a @cerave_canada cleanser you like, and are wondering what Vitamin C to try, try the one within the same brand because it should be formulated to work with other items in their lineup. Same if you are looking for a daily moisturizer (you know who you are 😉), and then may be a gentle retinol regimen… Most established brands have different collections for different skin needs. How is this not obvious?
