AU idea; matcha is a mew who looks a bit like a tandemaus and inari is a shiny tandemaus

This mouse really just found baby kittens and starting raising them lol

In this AU, Matcha is a set of twin Mew, while Inari is… weird. She’s a solo Tandemaus, a rarity to be sure. Most Tandemaus don’t survive alone, but Inari is thriving. She was a bit ostracized within Tandemaus society for being a loner, so she took to traveling. Which is how she stumbled upon a large pink egg!

As the stream of strangers finally slowed, Matcha finally realized how much of the day has gone by.

"Gosh, we should probably take a lunch break," Matcha decided. "We know you already ate, but would you like more food, Inaris?"

"Nom!" Inari squeaked. "Nomnomnom!"

Matcha chuckled, lifting Inari onto one of their heads. "What do you feel like today? Berries?"

"Ahhh!" Inari gripped Matcha's fur with one paw and began pointing up with the other. "Uppie!"

Confused, Matcha looked up, careful to make sure Inari wouldn't tumble off. In the sky, there was something darting around, too far up to really get a good look at it. At least until it suddenly stopped in midair.

It wasn't flapping, so clearly it wasn't using wings to fly. It was purple too, a strange color for the desert. Matcha squinted up the purple creature, trying to figure out what it was doing, when it suddenly started moving. Right at them.

Matcha grabbed Inari and started booking it. Even if the creature wasn't after them, it was still best not to be in the blast zone when it hit earth. And it was going FAST, the shockwave of it hitting the ground strong enough to knock them over.

It took Matcha a moment to recover, and by the time they did, the creature was standing over them. Was that a Meowscarada? No, wrong color and too bottom heavy. Not to mention the super long tail. It looked like one of their earlier visitors, but the color was very different.

"Oops!" the feline creature said, accent definitely foreign. "Sorry, little guys. I thought you were someone else. I'm not too good at finding them like this."

"'Them'? 'Like this'?" Matcha asked, still a bit in shock.

The creature ignore them, or perhaps didn't hear them. "Hey, have you little bunnies seen...?"

They suddenly trailed off, staring at the little bundle of fur Matcha had clutched close to their bodies. Inari was wriggling against Matcha, squeaking indignantly at having been confined in any way. Matcha tried to shield Inari with their bodies, but the little Mew was too slippery and wormed their way out.

Before Matcha could even cry out to stop them, Inari darted over to the stranger, paws up.

Inari’s eyes lit up at the appearance of food and in an instant, they were gone. Literally disappeared for a moment before reappearing within biting range of the Poképuff.

A teleport. Right, Matcha mentioned they did that.

“Inaris, your manners!” Matcha cried out. “We know it’s for you, but at least say thank you!”

Inaris, face absolutely smeared with frosting and cheeks full of puff said, “Fan-kyu,” and then proceeded to keep eating.

Despite the size of the puff compared to their body, Inari managed to eat the entire thing in just a minute.

Does Inari in this AU grow up to be like her canon self? Or does she turn out differently in personality, expression and or goals?

Inari winds up pretty similar to her canon self, though perhaps a bit less traumatized and a bit more bubbly. She’s never captured by Team Rocket, she’s never used to make a Mewtwo, and there’s just a lot of her previous adventures from the prime timeline that don’t happen.

She becomes less bubbly for quite a while after Matcha eventually passes. (It was peaceful, in their sleep.) It will be her first major loss, and having to cope with the fact that she’s immortal while everyone else isn’t is… hard at first. But she has the rest of her family to help her grieve healthily at least.

And eventually, maybe she ends up with a mate? Canon Inari doesn’t have a pre-determined mate since I like the idea of her being able to have a relationship with someone off-blog, but this one? Maybe I’ll make one for her. Any suggestions?

What Fade's role in this AU? Still a babysitter or she has a different role?

Fade is one of the friends Inari makes growing up! The two meet after Inari grows a little older and starts wanting to travel Paldea.

Lil Fade lives deep in the Glaseado Mountains, where her pale skin is hidden away from the sun and her white fur blends in with the snow. Inari will be her very first friend!

So what was Inari's mother doing in the crater in the first place? Was she hoping it to be a place her and her child could live in peacefully?

Inari’s mother actually had her in the crater, as that’s where they were living at the time. Few humans went down there, and the few that did were easily avoided. Perfect for a mewther looking for a place to have her mittens.

In this universe, Inari was born in that hidden-away cave where you find Iron Valiant and Roaring Moon in-game. Even if a trainer found them, who would bother a Mew who’s being guarded by giant primal dragons and literal fighting machines?

The problem here was another Mew. They were the one that beat up Inari’s mother. They were the reason her mother fled and sought someone to keep Inari safe, her mother knowing she might not ever see her baby again.

What happened to Inari’s mother is a mystery, but I will say she does show up in Inari’s life again, and that she isn’t dead. I might even talk about this some more later down the line, after things happen in the main timeline…

Matcha laughed nervously, scratching the back of their heads.

“I think we’re doing okay, at least now,” Matcha started. “Back when we started, we had no idea what we were doing. We’ve never raised a baby before. And so there were definite growing pains.

“We think it was… a week after we got Inaris? They literally vanished on us. Teleported, to be exact. It was, well…”

“After about an hour, we finally found them. They’d gotten up onto a high cliff somehow and fallen asleep. They weren’t hurt. They weren’t even scared. They thought it was a game.”

“Hi an’ seek!” Inari chimed in.

“After that, we put the bell on their tail,” Matcha said, sighing. “That made them much easier to find.”
