Coffee Time with Order of Shan(n)a #1
Episodes are exceedingly rare. Not that I want them that way. They just don’t happen as often as I’d like them to. Just like with the blog posts. They just don’t happen often enough. Ideas for episodes come and I get excited but then things in life happen. Like allergies and my voice changes to baritone. UGH. Coffee Time with Order of Shan(n)a is one of the ideas that came to me. It was to be a…

Episode #12 A visit to Swordfish Island and Hot Springs Island using Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG
It has been a long time since an episode has been recorded and uploaded for your ears. My apologies as life got in the way. I was hoping that Order of Shan(n)a Podcast would be on more of a regular schedule, but it just hasn’t worked out. We also are not getting new episodes from Spellburn or Glowburn and this is even more reason for Order of Shan(n)a Podcast to produce more for the Dungeon…

I turned 60 in September.
Hi.
I turned 60 this past September. I'm looking over the last 30 years of my life. From 30-35, I was at my fittest. I exercised, jogged, and cycled at least 3 times a week.
In the late 90's, there were a lot of health challenges and in the early 2000's, I hit a low depression. You may not know that when you hit a low depression, doctors decide to offer you medication to help you feel better. These medications cause weight gain.
I experienced a weight gain of +30 pounds in a month. Yes, that is a lot! And what I experienced after that was that no doctor wanted to help me lose that weight. Then a new depression set in.
Now I am 60. I've struggled for some 25 years to bring my weight down. I want to get back to being physically fit. I want to be able to enjoy exercise, walking/jogging, and cycling again. I really enjoy swimming. I want to build endurance and I want to eat healthy. It's not just eating healthily that will bring me back to being fit.
I'm looking for that support system. I'm looking for that sponsor who will help me, support me, and test me. I offer my 60-year-old body.
I've yet to cycle 100 miles. I've wanted to. It is on my bucket list.
In May 2021 I was hit by a car as a pedestrian. I had multiple soft tissue injuries. I had a broken fibula. I was fortunate that it healed without surgery. I was left with nerve damage in my lower back and down my right leg. Over time I am healing, and I have not needed much but OTC anti-inflammatories.
I am eager to see what I can do at age 60.

What recently turning 60 is to me.
How did I get here? And where do I go from here?
I remember asking these same questions when I reached 55. I was without a job. And I struggled with finding a job. Who really wants to hire someone who is 55? We are old. We are set in our ways. What can we really learn anymore?
The saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." is now a label that I feel I am stuck with.
Yet, let me tell you that arriving at 60 has not put me in the grave, I pretty much have another 25 - 30 years left in me. Yes, I have had some bumps and bruises along the way and my body is not that of a 20-year-old anymore or even a 30-year-old, but I'm going to try and rejuvenate this mortal corpse.
Just prior to my 60th birthday, I purchased a recumbent trike. I started with very short distances on it. Five miles. Then six miles. Then 10 miles. I went 12 miles before completing the Twisted Pretzel Tour in Germantown, OH this past weekend. I rode the Pretzel Rod route of 22 miles. This wasn't the easy task I thought. Ohio can be flat in the northern part, but as you get south and closer to the Ohio River and it gets a bit hilly. Recumbents don't climb hills well. Fortunately, the hills on the route were not too long but they were a bit of a grade to reckon with.
I shot a bit of video and hope to view it soon.
But that isn't the reason for this blog. I'm looking to blog on what it takes to get into physical fitness as a female who is 60 years old and getting older every day. It may not be a daily blog as I don't even know if there is one person who will read this.
I enjoy cycling. I've been a fit cyclist in my 30's. I would cycle every week during good weather. Winter...nope. I have an indoor trainer, but OMG! I can't stand to ride it. I've tried watching movies. I've tried reading. Lately, I've tried watching road cycling races, both men, and women while I am on the trainer. The indoor trainer is so uncomfortable. There are fitness companies trying to help give the indoor stationary trainer an environment-friendly boost.
I am your writer if you need someone to write about fitness, aging, cycling, etc for your blog, white paper, web page, or website.
I am a registered nurse with 36+ years of experience. I have ISSA training as a fitness trainer. I know what it is like to be physically fit and then hit a physical barrier and challenges that take away the physically fit portion of your life. And, am bouncing back with new energy and a lust to help others who are going through this same struggle.

Does anyone really read Tumblr blogs?
I come to Tumbler occasionally. Rarely. I say rarely because I do not see any activity on my blog posts here. I do use WordPress which posts my blogs to Tumblr.
My question is: What happened to Tumblr and its lure for those who blog?
Does what I blog just stay in cyberspace?
Can I come here and type whatever is on my mind and no one read it?
Do I matter in the world?
What if?

Post GenCon COVID Crud
Those of us who have been going to conventions prior to the COVID-19 pandemic know that we take a risk being around people who attend while not feeling well. The possibility of "catching" whatever virus they bring with them is a 50/50 chance or higher. We call this "Con Crud". Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, we knew this as being either a bad Cold or as serious as the Flu. Neither feels good to have and leads to unwanted days off from work.
I've been COVID-free since the start of the pandemic. Then I go to GenCon 55 and come home with a positive COVID test. I've had the vaccine and two boosters. GenCon required proof of vaccine and masks being worn throughout the convention center and in Lucas Oil Stadium.
The vaccines, whether a Flu vaccine or the COVID vaccine cover us not from getting the Flu or COVID, but from experiencing them at the most serious symptoms. I, personally, can say that the effects of the booster were worse than what I am experiencing now with a positive COVID result.
Presently, I am fatigued, my sinuses feel like they are on fire as well as my throat. I've had no fever although I have felt chilled a couple of times. My temperature didn't go higher than 98.9 F. These symptoms have not gotten worse, but have lingered now for a week.
I tested five days after the first test and still get a strong COVID positive. I'll wait again until the end of this week to test again. Even though five days are the recommended days to quarantine if one still has symptoms it is best to continue through the 10 days as one can still shed the virus.
Symptoms still mean you are sick with the virus.
I want to reiterate, that vaccines do not prevent you from getting a disease, they can prevent you from getting a full-blown illness. They can lessen your chance of being off work for a long duration. This is why vaccine mandates are put into effect. Your employer needs you at work. They do not need nor want to be paying for sick time and, you don't want to be paying higher benefits, or hospital bills for an illness you could take precautions against.
People want to believe that toxins are being shot into them when they receive a vaccine. Better research is your saving grace. Chose to be wise. The choice is always yours. You do you.

The Wizard Van & Order of Shan(n)a at GenCon 55
The Wizard Van & Order of Shan(n)a at GenCon 55
It has been 2 years since Goodman Games has been to GenCon in Indianapolis. It has also been 2 years since I’ve been to GenCon in Indianapolis. There were a few of the Dungeon Crawl Classics family at last year’s GenCon. Requirements at GenCon this year required that you show that you’ve had the COVID vaccination and that masks must be worn…

Female Knights in Medieval History
While women have been fighting alongside men for all of history, they usually don't get the same recognition as their counterparts. Here are some cases where women did get accepted into chivalric orders, though they typically got a separate title. Some of the women were combatants, and some were not (but non-combatant men have been accepted in chivalric orders for just as long!)
Order of the Hatchet (12th century Spain) Orde de l'Atxa|Orden del Hacha was an entirely-female order created after women defended the Catalonian town of Tortosa from invaders. With most adult men off to war, the women fought with hatchets and other tools. Women of this order were given social and financial privileges, including tax exemptions.
Order of Saint-John (12th century Malta) A military religious order, the Order of Saint-John had female soeurs hospitalières and male frères prêtres who had essentially the same role in the order.
Teutonic Order (12th century Jerusalem) The Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem accepted women primarily as consorores and hospitallers, in charge of supportive and medical services. However, these women did follow men to war to perform battlefield medicine.
Knights Templar (12th-14th century Jerusalem) The members of the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon admitted women for a number of roles. We know that when the final got around to writing down their rules, it included continuing the already standard practice of admitting women. Most Knights Templar were noncombatant, especially financiers.
Order of the Garter (14th-15th century England) Dedicated to the patron saint of England, Saint George, the Most Noble Order of the Garter admitted women regularly, often due to blue blood. However, women without high birth were admitted as well.
Order of the Ermine (14th and 15th century France) The L'Ordre de l'Hermine was directly inspired by the Order of the Garter and dedicated to upholding one's personal honor. It openly admitted men and women of any social rank, including the only known instance in Medieval history of a woman serving as Officer of Arms. This woman, Katherine Potier, was titled "Espy Herault".
Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary (13th-16th century Italy) A unique order that took up arms to pacify cities in the fractured Italian states. It was centered in Bologna and would admit women as fighters called militissa (literally 'female knight').

Things that don't go right.
Life.
Life sometimes doesn't go right.
Everyday.
Daily life doesn't go right.
Life is hard.
Any ideas as to how to make life go right?
I've been in this life for almost 60 years.
As a child, I expected being an adult would be easier as I won't have to go to school every day and be told what to do. Classroom work wasted time, in my opinion. Adults could do whatever they wanted to do.
Mom stayed home every day. She could sit and do what she wanted to do. She had the TV and could watch soap operas or game shows all day.
Dad went to work with the same packed lunch day after day. Mom packed his lunch with a sandwich of white bread with butter and a slice of bologna, a piece of fruit, and Jell-O. He would have a thermos of coffee with him also.
My school lunch would include the same buttered bologna sandwich, a piece of fruit, maybe Jell-O, or another kind of treat.
Life, in my childhood, was grand. At the time I did not see it that way, but now that I'm almost 60 and my parents are going to be 93 years old, I find that I'd love to be back in my childhood with my parents being young again.
I realize that life back then was security.
I want life to be secure again.

Episode #9: Interview with Judge Marlene “HitMore” after Gary Con IVX 2022
I interviewed Judge Marlene “HitMore” after her second Gary Con attendance and her first-time judging (GM-Game Master) Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) RPG events at a convention. We had a wonderful time at our first in-person convention since 2019. It was great seeing friends, giving long wanted hugs, and gaming with old and new friends. There is nothing like being at a smaller convention. The…

Hey! It's March where has Shan(n)a been?
Hey! It’s March where has Shan(n)a been?
Art by Doug Kovacs So, where has Shan(n)a been? Obviously, Shan(n)a has not been writing the blog. What can we expect from the Order of Shan(n)a Podcast? Well, it would be nice if there were emails from listeners to spark topics for the podcast or the blog. I’d love comments and reviews left which would spark ideas. The last three episodes didn’t get blog posts. Why? It’s just that I didn’t…
