The past year and a half I've been involved in creating a new brand and soul for an old shopping centre here in Helsinki. It has been a very challenging and long road for me, but the end result is definitely something Finland has never seen before. An enormous thanks goes to the client for having a truly unique vision (and the balls to make it happen).

The photos are from the opening night (thanks to lindstromrobert.com). Our top floor transforms into a massive lounge combining three restaurants. More photos available at Facebook.

The white space around my ideas.
I discovered my ability to make things happen already at a relatively young age. I was 16 years old when I started organizing those legendary raves with Lauri H. Together we are responsible for some of the biggest underground parties Finland has ever seen. We enjoyed the good life and rocked venues from natural caves to factory halls.
Today, over a decade later, I was standing at the top floor of a shopping centre and planning the opening night with Lauri. The same passion was still there, but you could see that time and stress had taken a toll on us both. Nevertheless I'm happy to see we are still both doing things we love.
Later I started wondering that how did I end up here. Since I stopped organizing events, I failed to get into an art school for 8 times and ended up spending almost 6 years in a factory. The urge to make something with my life gave me the strength to find my way to the best business school in Finland, where I spent only two years before we started our own creative agency that skyrocketed into a business.
I had become the designer I always hoped to be. I worked relentlessly and said no to no challenge. I discovered I could adapt to almost any task and handle enormous entities from top to bottom. I loved every bit of it – except the stress. Today, after standing at the top floor with Lauri, I realized that somewhere along the road I had lost my focus.
Don't get me wrong, I love the diversity of my work. With the right attitude you can do almost anything. However you'll eventually run out of hours in the day. It has taken me quite a long time to understand what my core abilities are and what I can do with them. Now It's time to take a step back to see the big picture and start focusing again: I want to find the white space around my ideas again.

Failed Pitches - Part. 1
A rebranding concept for a premium beer that didn't go through. I removed the original brand, but you get the basic idea.
What do you think? Hot or Not?

Though my work is mostly about design & marketing I sometimes get the possibility to make something like this happen. Definitely one the best days of the summer!

I just watched Hanna and I have to say Chemical Brothers surely whipped up a massive soundtrack for the movie. The only thing missing was a plot.

Inspiring quotes #1
"But it's just bread."
Said a Marketing Manager, when I was pitching a somewhat unconventional rebranding concept for their toasts. They didn't buy it.

I love design competitions like Cannes Young Lions that put designers on the same level and allow you to compare your approach to what everyone else came up with exact same brief.
These are my three entries done with Joni Valkonen during the past 4 years. We missed the competition in 2010, because I got stuck in New York due to the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption.
Next year is the last time I am eligible to participate. Who knows, maybe this time we'll find our way to Cannes.
