Monthly Writing Summary - April 2024
THE MYSTERIES OF THE APRICOT SUN 🌇
Word count: 35,300
Words added: 7,120
Current chapter: 13 out of 32 / Draft 1
Estimated completion: 39% (+9%)
Snippet:
Consicor gave him another night, two at most, until he dropped his embarrassment and started acting normal again. He was like clockwork: blab something he shouldn’t have, flit away for a bit, then put it all behind him.
Notes:
Highlights from this month: nail painting and high fashion.
I’m working on the pic for 35K!
THE CLAWS OF THE OUNCE 🫀
Word count: 48,165
Words added: 7,024
Current chapter: 12 / 13 (working on both at once) out of 28 / Draft 2
Estimated completion: 45% (+7%)
Snippet:
As the cold water drummed against her shoulders, Ash reflected on the misery of this summer. Its heat seemed much more oppressive than ever before. Perhaps it was the added warmth of Orion’s being that did it.
Notes:
Chapter 13 is one hell of a ride.
THE GIFT OF GLOVES 🧤
Word count: 7,955
Words added: 1,555
Current chapter: 3 out of 7 / Draft 2
Estimated completion: 40% (+10%)
Snippet:
This was the point of no return. Lapax tilted her head, her pelt ruffling slightly along her spine. The dyed yellow patterns distorted with her feelings.
Notes:
Making more headway, woo!
MORE NOTES
I’ve decided to stop setting the “monthly goals”. Just the daily goals are better for me.
On the 8th, I wrote up the opening scene for a different story idea (it involves a solar eclipse, so I felt it was only appropriate). Don’t expect this one anytime soon, though — that story idea still has a lot of cooking to do.

SFF writer problem: Your WIP takes place in a world where no irl species exist, and now you have some trouble describing colours because lots of colour shades are named after plants and animals and you don’t want it to seem out-of-place.

Belated art for 45K! (The updated ref sheet will be posted for 50K.)
Tumblr media
Why can’t you see what I am?
Experimental Ash sketch, vaguely a spiritual rework of this comic.
Pasted alt text:
[Image description: A digital sketch done in pastel brushes, showing an anthro heraldic panther (big cat with white fur and multicoloured spots) standing outside under a full moon. She is wearing a short-sleeved red shirt and blue pants (shown from the thighs up) and small jewels on her ears, brow, and collarbone. She is staring up at the moon with a pained expression, mouth wide open in lament and one hand pointing towards herself. It is nighttime, and there are mountains in the background. End ID.]

Some worldbuilding to celebrate getting to 30K on Apricot Sun!
The Interdimensional Borzoi Hellhound is finally here…
The Hellhound of Harenocus
Tumblr media
The Hellhound (also known as the Divine Sighthound) is a rather unsettling demigod. Befitting her title and appearance, she acts as a hunting dog for the gods, chasing down anything and anyone that threatens the integrity of their universe.
Uniquely among demigods, she can freely rip through the veils separating dimensions, allowing her to travel wherever she likes whenever she likes. This makes her job very easy.
Her eye-straining CMYK-esque palette is a point of intimidation. She doesn’t need stealth once she’s torn through into the mortal world. If you can see her, you’re already screwed.
More lore under the cut:
In Harenocus, “demigod” refers to former mortals who have been granted immortality and limited divine powers by a true god. Yes, the Hellhound was once human, though any details have long, LONG been lost to time. She… may or may not actually remember herself.
Her “coworker”, the Heavenhawk, is often sent to tail her on missions to keep her from getting too far away. She is fully aware of this and resents it.
She has a humanoid form (albeit with a doglike head still).
Can’t stand hot weather.
She has a long tail, and her fur goes all the way down her back to its tip. Here’s a picture of a full-body design (head shape and claw / tooth colour are outdated, but whatever)

Favourite foods of my MCs:
Taryn: Strawberries and bilberries. Loves fruit in general.
Taigex: Zetin fruit.
Ash: Bacon, specifically when it’s not quite crispy and has a bunch of fat still on it.
Darby: Salted nuts and chips. Anything salty, really.

This is so sweet.
sitd mini snips - first sleep
“Glad everything has been established,” Daniel says, settling more comfortably. “Can I please go back to sleep now?” When Jesse does not answer, he adds: “D’you want to stay? You can stay so long as you shut up.”
That does absolutely nothing to help Jesse regain the use of speech.
It doesn’t matter though, Daniel’s face breaks into a little half smile and he pulls Jesse the rest of the way down with him. And Jesse lets him. Ends up laid next to him in bed, Daniel feels cool to the touch, a few degrees off from what could be realistically classified as normal. Just cold enough to be noticed.
And he hasn’t got a heartbeat.
Which is less alarming than Jesse thinks it should be.
A lot less.
Still.
He lays there, in the blacked out room, and the man beside him falls back asleep—really fast, all things considered. And surprisingly at ease?
He looks softer in sleep.
Like a weight is lifted.
Somewhere, in staring at him.
Jesse drifts off as well.

It’s so hard being a writer sometimes because you can tell yourself over and over again that you’re writing for yourself, and yet you will always crave the interaction, you will always want to share, and for people to like the thing you put your heart and soul into. It’s just hard when you can see the numbers, and the constant comparing, having the self-doubt and wondering why you even bother trying when there are people much better than you.
All you can do is keep reminding yourself that it’s your story to tell, and no one else can tell it like you. You love it, and there are others out there who will love it, too, and the numbers absolutely do not reflect your worth or your storytelling.
You’re incredible, and you’ve got to keep writing because your story is worth telling.

Monthly Writing Summary — March 2024
This month, I experienced a combination of:
A lot of schoolwork,
Realizing I seriously need plot outlines / zero drafts after all (and so pausing my WIPs to write outlines for the remaining chapters),
and plain old writer’s block,
so I didn’t meet any of my goals or get much done on anything other than TCotO. I like what I did do, though!
THE CLAWS OF THE OUNCE 🫀
Word count: 41,130
Words added: 6,765
Current chapter: 11 out of 28 / Draft 2
Estimated story completion: 38%
Snippet:
Orion knew much more than she did. If he said something, it must be right. She took her memories of the last minutes and rewrote them to fit his words.
(OH NO.)
Notes:
I’m almost at a part I’m really eager to rewrite!
Orion’s subtle yet overwhelming controlling-ness is… something to write. In the first draft, he was much more outwardly aggressive / hostile, but I think what I’m currently doing fits much better for the type of character he’s supposed to be.
Goal for April: Get to 50K.
THE MYSTERIES OF THE APRICOT SUN 🌇
Word count: 28,180
Words added: 1,780
Current chapter: 10 out of 32 / Draft 1
Estimated story completion: 30%
Snippet:
Places and not-places didn’t mix. Things burned without smoke and fell in slices without being cut.
Notes:
Got some real eldritch horror vibes going…
Goal for April: Get to 35K (this time…)
THE GIFT OF GLOVES 🧤
Word count: 6,400
Words added: 880
Current chapter: 3 out of 7 / Draft 2
Estimated story completion: 30%
Snippet:
She’d been anticipating the immense pride of being named a discoverer. Now, she was only dreading the shame.
Notes:
None in particular.
Goal for April: Get to 15K.
