it's interesting that jean drinks the xavier's dream kool-aid in a much different way than scott. jean understands xavier's dream through charles himself, while scott understands it through charles' rulebook

to scott, xavier's dream is a dogma. but to jean (+ charles) they are personal philosophies that they use to make their decisions. "x-men don't kill" for scott is "i shouldn't kill" for jean and charles. the rules can be bent, if they're rules at all. this is how the cognitive dissonance caused by all manner of "for the greater good" behavior can be settled.

i think this is bc jean + charles are both telepaths, which comes with an insane amount of atlas syndrome. not to mention the extreme power they hold and the goddesshood on jean's part

you can't indulge in dreams when you know what people really think. you can't always play by the rules when you can do what they can. then you're complicit. then you've done something wrong. allegedly.

in my latest essay i touched on jean's relationship w/ her powers being different from but affected by charles'. jean understands + accepts herself as a victim of various abuses, but still approaches her powers w/ a sense of responsibility enforced by the phoenix saga genocide

Emma manifested much later in her youth than Charles or Jean, but still experienced her telepathy through the lens of trauma. No wonder her particular telepathic method emphasizes trickery and control — no wonder she never lets herself be vulnerable. Jean, similar to her mentor Charles, views her telepathy with a sense of responsibility, but one that is not as pathological as his, as her personal trauma is quite different.

swinging back to scott, this difference in understanding — xavier's rulebook vs xavier's philosophy — is what is driving a wedge between them. scott noticed ages ago that the directions he was given were just getting him lost. he's trying new dogmas. ones charles didn't write.

jean, on the other hand, never saw xavier's dream (or "love", etc) as antithetical to exertion of power or violence. jean isnt stupid. jean isnt going to kumbaya with orchis. jean protected the brood from genocide like 10 mins after she promised to kill a guy if she saw him again

(also: xavier's dream, or the x-men's "rules", etc, doesn't have a clear definition. i don't know if it ever did, but i think that ship sailed at the very latest after charles' death in AvX)

A few hours ago, I finished the final edits for A Summer with the Immortal 🥳🎉🎊

Final word count (not counting chapter titles and other non-story text): 58,170

Page count in the writing document: 176

Projected page count when it gets published: ~250

It’s been a long journey. I’ve been working on this project for over two and a half years, going through 8-ish drafts and completely rewriting the story along the way. There were so many times I told myself “okay, THIS is going to be the final version!”, and for a while it felt like I was never going to finish it. But now I can confidently say: it is done. The only things left to do are to draw the cover and have it published.

I’m just so happy! To everyone who’s ever interacted with my posts about this project: thank you!

Once again going to bitch about the endings they give us these days because damn it, they suck!

Old Choices endings were profound, bittersweet at times, and they made you reflect on the series/book as it comes to its conclusion. Some of the best endings were The Crown & The Flame where we come full circle, Endless Summer where your final decision impacts the fate of you, your friends, and the rest of the world, and It Lives (both ILITW and ILB) where you either get a bittersweet but happy ending or a straight up sad, despondent ending where you and maybe even some of your friends are dead.

Nowadays the endings are just like…empty. Hollow. Soulless. Wake the Dead’s ending tried to be bittersweet but it was so rushed and just not remotely impactful that it didn’t come across that way at all.

Murder at Homecoming’s ending also went for a more bittersweet feel, but the conclusion was also rushed and it really just left me frustrated.

Immortal Desires was originally meant to be a standalone, so looking at it from that lens, the ending was ridiculous. It dropped the reveal that we were a vampire and we were like “wow, I can’t wait for more adventures!” And that was it. Now, thankfully, we’re getting a sequel, but THAT was the ending they wrote for what was originally a standalone.

All in all, a lot of the modern Choices book endings are essentially “and no more bad guys ever bothered them again and they lived happily ever after :)”.

And compared to, I don’t know, tearfully sacrificing ourself to fix the timelines, saving the world, and dying for our friends, possibly even leaving our spouse a widow/widower after a single day of marriage? These modern endings just don’t cut it.
