Four dioramas/assemblage art pieces receiving inspiration in part from Taylor Swift. I have a friend who is a Swiftie and one of the sweetest people I know. I love the lyrics in Ivy and Florida (Ivy also my fave on her latest album. I am a Florida native). Solange, Jill Scott and Erykah Badu my absolute faves (Janet, too) but Taylor IS a poet. Folk dolls are part of my thing. Always a shout out to the elders and ancestors. Every doll has a bead, too. My friend gets the Ivy one! :)

It touched me that so many on Twitter responded to the map made yesterday about Sun Ra’s Birmingham and Chicago. I have long told my students maps are a text telling a particular story.

This past weekend, I met a couple of who met in Coconut Grove, the 1st Miami neighborhood I called home. We shared a lot of memories of the Grove when it felt smaller and more personable.

I shared a map of the area. It was made after University of Miami won its 1st national football title. The map brought memories. It also showcased sad spatial stories. Scribbled trees marked the place where people who look like me used to live.

I am inviting my Afrofuturism class 2 spatially think through Sun Ra’s Chicago & Birmingham this week. The effort involves consideration of present-day redevelopment efforts of downtown Birmingham. I reel in the impact of interstate highways & even the 16th St Baptist Church bombing. I am struck by disruptive power of interstate (& technology period) entangled in Ra’s interwar/postwar experiences. Even the sounds of his “Magic City” hint at the horrors.

On March 13th, 2023, the Moon Winx Lodge of Tuscaloosa, Alabama was shut down for code violations. City Council President Kip Tyner stated, “Operating without a license, roach and rodent infestation, alleged prostitution. It was deplorable. This is an opportunity we have right now to shut down a dredge that’s been in our community for so long. What happened needed to happen.”

The motel dated back to the 1920s. Its iconic sign had been on the property for over 60 years. Two weeks after the motel closed, the sign was sold. Source
